The last sporting event on earth you’d expect there to be heckling at, outside of the Masters (which literally doesn’t allow it), is the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town, which just so happens to fall directly after Augusta National on the schedule. Harbour Town is famously the most laid back week of the season, a byproduct of being after the most mentally and emotionally gruelling week of the year and being held in the extremely chill area that is Hilton Head Island in April.

But the 2023 RBC Heritage had a much different vibe with it achieving elevated event status, meaning big-time players came to play for big-time money. Normally, the event is lucky to get Jordan Spieth and maybe one other big name to show up, but this year, just four days after the Masters, everybody but Rory McIlroy showed up, Jon Rahm included.

Also among that group was Patrick Cantlay, who could have desperately used a week away from the spotlight after his pace of play came into question on Sunday at the Masters. Credit to Cantlay for still showing up at Harbour Town, where he managed a solo third finish but did have to deal with more slow-play scrutiny both on social media and on the actual golf course. Here’s Cantlay getting heckled, at Harbour Town of all places, to “hurry it up”, which caused his caddie Matt Minister to react to the crowd:

Shared with me from the tournament this weekend. Slow play jokes clearly getting to some one already…@TronCarterNLU @DEWALTtough pic.twitter.com/PrujuQeRQS

— Brewer Carter (@TheBrewersBest) April 18, 2023

Oh boy. For fans to do this at Harbour Town means Cantlay has become an overnight slow-play villain, something he’s keenly aware of based off his self-troll from Friday, when he made a hole-in-one and tweeted out the video with the caption “Playing faster!” Not exactly a fix to the problem, but it was at least an acknowledgment that there is one.

That said, it didn’t appear like Cantlay was doing much to fix it on the weekend in South Carolina. A video of Cantlay taking nearly a minute to hit a four-foot putt during the final round went viral, specifically two videos comparing the length of Cantlay’s routine to two separate but equally hilarious scenes from “Happy Gilmore”. He also took a ton of time to hit that chip off a bulkhead on the 14th hole, though that was somewhat understandable given the difficulty of the shot and the magnitude of the moment late in the round.

And then there was this video, also from Sunday, of a fan timing Cantlay’s pre-shot routine on a different hole:

This is getting out of control @patrick_cantlay pic.twitter.com/xUrRehTRGd

— Beer At The Turn ??‍ (@tap_it_in_golf) April 17, 2023

If this fan’s timer on his phone is to be believed, Cantlay took nearly three minutes to hit this shot. Even if you’re behind a tree or on a bulkhead and you’re playing for $3.6 million, it should never take nearly three minutes to hit a shot. But, as it’s already been said one million times and will be said one million more, unless the PGA Tour enforces slow-play penalties, nothing will change on the pace-of-play front.

Scottie Scheffler. Andrew Redington

PGA Tour players have never been known for being smooth. This is often proven after a clutch shot or a huge putt, when players and caddies completely mismanage the celebration situation. Scottie Scheffler and his bag man, Ted Scott, did nothing to change that narrative at the RBC Heritage.

At Harbour Town’s par-5 second, Scheffler’s 11th hole of the day, the 2022 Masters champ was greenside in two, setting up a relatively easy up and down for birdie. Scheffler had other ideas, chipping in for eagle to jump from six under to eight under, vaulting him inside the top five.

That’s when it happened. Scheffler went for the “put-her-there partner!” hand shake, while Scott went for the up-high fist bump. The former World No. 1 attempted to call an audible, as did Scott, and it only led to more chaos. If you enjoy maximum cringe, then this is the video for you:

Just a terrible handshake/fist bump/high five exchange, even by golf standards

pic.twitter.com/m2B3WiHkOl

— Will Gray (@WillGrayGolfbet) April 14, 2023

As Will Gray put it above, this is truly horrifying stuff even by golf standards. This is a sport where Tommy Fleetwood’s caddie Ian Finnis once slapped him in the face during a celebration and that still wasn’t as bad as whatever happened to Scheffler and Scott here. Let this be a lesson to all players and caddies: have a celebration plan before the celebration plans you. Make it a standard knucks on knucks, or a simple dad high five. Just have a go-to celly, something you can trust, and these things can be avoided.

Matt Fitzpatrick led by one heading into the final round of the RBC Heritage, and wound up holding on to win on Sunday at Harbour Town Golf Links, making a tap-in birdie on the third playoff hole to outlast defending champion Jordan Spieth.

Mind you, trying to predict whether the reigning US Open champion could close things out at Harbour Tour Golf Links — and claim the $3.6 million first-place prize money payout in the PGA Tour’s latest $20 million designated event — was tricky business given the conflicting trends.

Working for Fitzpatrick: He was coming off a career-best 63 to jump into the lead.
Working against him: 14 other players, including three major champions (Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth and Jimmy Walker) were within four shots.
Working against Fitzpatrick: He had just two top-10 finishes this season and was 81st in the FedEx Cup points standings.
Working for him: One of those top-10s came last week at the Masters, when he finished T-10.
Working for Fitzpatrick: The last time he held a 54-hole lead entering the final round of a PGA Tour event was at The Country Club, where he closed out the title for his first PGA Tour title/major.
Working against him: Just four 54-hole leaders since 2010 at Harbour Town had gone on to win.
Working against Fitzpatrick: 12 of 25 winners this season came from behind in the final round to win.
Working for him: Fitzy has a 69.2 final-round scoring average in this event.

Fitzpatrick went lower than that, with a three-under 68 in the final round to get to 17-under 267 overall. After he and Spieth parred the first two playoff holes, Fitzpatrick stuffed his approach shot on the par-4 18th to kick in range to set up the win.

Patrick Cantlay. Ben Jared

Patrick Cantlay has made plenty of headlines over the past week because of his deliberate nature on the golf course, starting last Sunday during the final round of the Masters when Brooks Koepka made his thoughts known about Cantlay pace of play.

On Sunday during the final round of the RBC Heritage, Cantlay made more headlines, but this time because he attempted a crazy chip shot that every TV announcer said he should not — including World No. 1 Jon Rahm, who happened to be wearing a headset and providing analysis at the time.

Only two shots behind leader Jordan Spieth on the par-3 14th hole, Cantlay hit his tee shot well left of the green, 75 feet away from the pin. The ensuing chip was tricky and the ball gathered speed and rolled beyond the pin and was tracking toward the water that guards the right of the green. The ball rolled, and rolled and rolled, hit the wood bulkhead and came to rest lodged between the bulkhead and the wooden pylon post.

While Cantlay was trying to figure out his options — something that understandably took awhile — CBS Sports announcers unanimously believed he should pick the ball up, take the penalty and take a drop.

“If you’re two [shots] behind and now you’re in this situation, are you going to take a bit more risk because you’re trying to keep pace with Spieth,” Trevor Immelman asked. “What would your process be here.”

Rahm responded: “No, you can’t. Take a drop, hopefully make a 4 and try to go on a tear the last few holes. That’s all you can do.”

Said Ian Baker-Finch: “I would not be playing that.”

Well, Cantlay did play it, and the ball ended four feet from the pin. He made the putt for bogey and remained in contention.

“Well, I’m glad he went for it now,” Baker-Finch quipped.

“Welcome to being an announcer Jon,” Immelman said to Rahm.

The World No. 1 had fun with the exchange and said, “I’d rather be on the other side hopefully proving you guys wrong.”

Having watched Jordan Spieth burn the edge with potential walk-off birdie putts on the first two playoff holes at the RBC Heritage, Matt Fitzpatrick knew he couldn’t give the tournament’s defending champion any more chances. Not if the 28-year-old Englishman wanted to claim his second career PGA Tour title on Sunday and fulfill a childhood dream of winning at Harbour Town.

Luckily as Fitzpatrick stood over his second shot on the third playoff hole — the third time he had play Harbour Town’s famed 18th in less than an hour — he was more than comfortable with what he was facing: 186 yards to the hole, wind at his back, tournament in the balance. And the result was a shot that will go down in tournament lore:

What. A. Shot. ?@MattFitz94 nearly holes it for the win on the third playoff hole. pic.twitter.com/hIhOz9owmX

When Spieth’s approach wound up 33 feet from the hole, and he couldn’t make his birdie, Fitzpatrick closed out a victory.

How did Fitzpatrick get so dialled in? We’ll let him explain:

“The first playoff hole had 179 and hit a 9-iron about 10 yards past the hole. The third playoff hole we had 186 and his 9-iron two inches short. For me it was a perfect yardage. Billy was delighted with the yardage. Said he didn’t have to do much caddieing. It was a great shot.”

No doubt.

Matt Fitzpatrick. Sam Greenwood

Jordan Spieth had his typical flair for the dramatic late Sunday at the RBC Heritage, but ultimately it was Matt Fitzpatrick who prevailed on the third playoff hole after hitting a 9-iron approach inside a foot for a kick-in birdie on the par-4 18th hole at Harbour Town Golf Links.

Fitzpatrick, 28, shot a final-round 68 to end for a 17-under 267 total, then dodged Spieth twice on the first two playoff holes before knocking out the tournament’s defending champion. It was Fitzpatrick’s second PGA Tour victory, following his win at the US Open at The Country Club in Brookline last June. He earned $3.6 million for the victory in the tour’s latest “designated” event.

For Fitzpatrick, the victory was extra special as he and his family, who often traveled to Hilton Head Island from England when he was a child. He remembers visiting the area as early as age six, and thought it would be a treat to play where the PGA Tour annually gathers.

“It’s hard to describe,” Fitzpatrick said. “It doesn’t get better than this. Walking down here, looking around, it’s a course I dreamed of playing when I was young. This one means more than anything.”

Jordan Spieth. Sam Greenwood

Fitzpatrick trailed Spieth, the 2022 RBC Heritage winner via a playoff over Patrick Cantlay, by two shots with five holes remaining, but the reigning US Open champ made pars on the par-3 14th when Spieth made bogey, then rattled off birdies on Nos. 15 and 16 to pull even. Fitzpatrick had a chance to take a lead into the final hole but missed a seven-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th.

Spieth, 29, had more than enough chances himself to defend his title. He held the aforementioned two-shot lead but could not closes things out over the final three holes. In fact, he had to make a six-foot par putt on the 18th hole in regulation to move into a playoff. He shot 66-66 on the weekend.

On the first playoff hole, Spieth faced a 12-footer for birdie to win the tournament, the ball hitting the right edge of the cup and did not drop. “I think if I hit the same putt 10 times, it goes in eight times,” Spieth said later.

Then on the par-3 17th, the second playoff hole, Spieth didn’t put enough pace on a 10-footer for birdie to win.

Returning again to the 18th hole for the third playoff hole, Fitzpatrick hit his approach to a foot, setting up a gimme birdie. Spieth followed it up with a mediocre approach of his own to 33 feet. When he gunned his birdie putt by, Fitzpatrick had the win.

“At this point, when you’re in a playoff, you plan on beating the guy by one,” Spieth said. “I guess, big picture it’s great, but I wish it would have ended differently.”

Spieth’s playoff record on the PGA Tour is now 5-5. If he had won, he would’ve joined Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Rory McIlroy as the only players in history to win 14 tour events and three majors by age 30. He still has three months left to join the prestigious group as he turns 30 in late July.

Take a bow, Patrick Cantlay.

Not for the ace he made at the par-3 seventh at Harbour Town Golf Links on Friday at the RBC Heritage, although that was nice. But for the masterclass in self-trolling he delivered on social media after jarring a 6-iron from 191 yards in the second round.

Playing faster! @RBC_Heritage @PGATOUR pic.twitter.com/mDxo2yarAB

— Patrick Cantlay (@patrick_cantlay) April 14, 2023

“Playing faster!” Cantlay wrote in the caption of his post containing the PGA Tour video. The ace was the highlight of the 65 Cantlay shot, moving him to eight-under and four shots behind midpoint leader Jimmy Walker, whose 12-under total is three better than Scottie Scheffler, Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele.

Eight-time PGA Tour winner Cantlay’s caption was a nod to the hits he’s taken on social media during the past week about his pace of play. On Sunday during the Masters, social media was ablaze with users blasting Cantlay’s deliberate pace at Augusta.

The Californian was paired in the second-to-last group with Viktor Hovland and some pointed to a moment — when Hovland hit his greenside pitch shot at the par-5 13th while Cantlay was still back in the fairway — as a sign that even the Norwegian had grown frustrated with his playing partner. Cantlay and Hovland took about four hours and 50 minutes to play their final round at Augusta.

On Sunday night, a frustrated Brooks Koepka singled out Cantlay’s group for slow play.

Koepka, who led by two after 54 holes at Augusta only to finish second to Jon Rahm, said: “The group in front of us [Cantlay and Hovland] was brutally slow. Jon went to the bathroom like seven times during the round, and we were still waiting.”

Cantlay then hit back at accusations of slow play in his pre-tournament press conference at the RBC Heritage.

“We finished the first hole, and the group in front of us was on the second tee when we walked up to the second tee, and we waited all day on pretty much every shot,” Cantlay said Tuesday. “We waited in 15 fairway, we waited in 18 fairway. I imagine it was slow for everyone.”

Jon Rahm. Sam Greenwood

Jon Rahm has a job. It pays well and comes with a really good retirement plan. There’s lots of travel involved, and he works weekends a lot. But that’s OK, because when he does, he gets paid even more.

Rahm takes that job very seriously. The Spaniard never calls in sick, nor does he mail it in.

If that wasn’t clear from the bogey-free seven-under-par 64 he shot Friday at the RBC Heritage to get to six-under after 36 holes, then the rather awkward exchange he had with a reporter in his post-round interview took care of that.

For context: Rahm won the Masters on Sunday, his fourth PGA Tour victory this year, after almost working a double shift. Because of weather delays, the World No. 1 played 30 holes at Augusta National on Sunday and then went through a parade of interviews, traditions, handshakes and photographs as the champion.

The 28-year-old then honoured a commitment to play the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links, which is now a $20 million designated event, despite being completely exhausted. That fatigue showed through nine holes of the first round when he sat two-over and ultimately scored one-over 72. Maybe some players would be tempted to roll over, miss the cut and truly enjoy the Masters victory.

Not Rahm, and that’s why the line of questioning on Friday clearly annoyed him.

Was there ever a thought that maybe just take the weekend off?
“What, like throw it?” Rahm asked.
No, not throw it, but … see what happens?
“I don’t understand what you mean right now,” Rahm said.
You played poorly yesterday, and then you come out today and you’re still tired. Why play good?
“It’s my job, right?” he said. “People pay their hard-earned money to watch me perform. They don’t care if I slept good or bad, I feel good or bad. It doesn’t matter, As a competitor, I’m not ducking anything in that sense. I’m going out and try to shoot low.”

Rahm’s Friday post-round interview wasn’t the only awkward exchange he’s had at the Heritage.

On Thursday, Rahm was introduced on the first tee by the starter it what sounded like a script written for last year’s Masters winner, Scottie Scheffler. Rahm stood waiting with his ball teed up as the starter said, “From Dallas, Texas, please welcome, the reigning Players Championship winner …”

“When I heard Dallas, I stepped aside because I thought they were introducing Jordan,” Rahm said on Friday, referring to his playing partner and Texas native Jordan Spieth. The starter then realised he was reading the same script from the previous three-ball, in which Scheffler, who won the Players last month, who was grouped with Webb Simpson and Cameron Young.

Rahm didn’t feel like himself in the first nine holes on Thursday, either. He had three bogeys and a birdie but scratched out a 72 courtesy of a one-under back nine.

On Friday, he was still tired, but looked more like himself. He hit 15 greens and needed just 26 putts to be back in contention. The eight-stroke improvement — from 72 to 64 — was the largest in Rahm’s PGA Tour career.

“My intention is to try my hardest, and that was it. It helps when I start the way I did [today],” Rahm said of his four birdies in the first five holes. “Making that birdie on 11 [his second hole] and keep hitting good shots and hitting birdies got [me] in a competitive mode very, very quickly. Early in the round I had it going and thought I could put myself in a good situation, which I did.”

Viktor Hovland. Andrew Redington

Disappointed with his finish at the Masters, Viktor Hovland hopped in the car and drove to Hilton Head Island late on Sunday. He was the joint leader after Round 1 at Augusta National and began the final round just three shots off the lead. But Hovland shot 74 and faded to a tie for seventh.

Somehow Hovland easily managed to leave Augusta behind him. He arrived at Hilton Head two-and-a-half hours later with his mother, who was visiting from Norway, feeling reinvigorated. Hovland got over his Masters stumble so quickly that he even felt like playing golf on Monday at Harbour Town Golf Links.

“I was pretty bored, and I was actually feeling fine, so I went out and played the back nine out here kind of before it got dark,” Hovland said. “It was pretty peaceful.”

The twilight nine worked — without the now famous neon Augusta attire — as a refreshed Hovland signed for a bogey-free 64 on Thursday at the par-71 Harbour Town to post the clubhouse lead at seven-under, during an incomplete first round at the $20-million designated event. He made seven birdies on the day, including at the last two holes.

Hovland’s only other visit here was for the 2020 RBC Heritage, when he opened with a 65 and went on to a T-21 finish.

“I’m a big fan of Pete Dye golf courses,” Hovland said. “I think they’re just awesome. It’s a tree-lined golf course and pretty narrow so I can hit this drive where I tee down, grip it down a little bit, and just hit a low bullet. It’s hard for me to hit a disastrous shot with that shot.”

#FarminwithHarman

who was even more frustrated with his play at Augusta National than Hovland, having missed the cut. The 36-year-old’s Masters decompression was drastically different than the man he’s pursuing on the leaderboard. He blew off steam with a wild Friday night at his 1,000-acre farm in South Georgia. Harman recently purchased the property and documents his adventures on Instagram using the hashtag #FarminWithHarman.

“I went and I killed a pig Friday night at my farm, and I killed a turkey Saturday morning,” Harman said after shooting 65. “I didn’t hit any balls until I got here Tuesday.”

The Georgia Bulldog will draw on special memories at the Heritage. He made his PGA Tour debut as a junior golfer in 2004 and competed again on a sponsor exemption while in college.

“I didn’t do any good, but I was thrilled to come over here,” Harman said. “It was [also] the first golf tournament I ever attended [as a fan]. I think I was 10 or 11 years old. I love coming here.”

His memories form that debut round in 2004? “I remember hitting it left on 3, and then I tried to chip it out, hit a tree, and it came back and hit me right in the chest,” Harman said of his 81 that day. “It was like, welcome to the PGA Tour.”

Harman’s last victory was at the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship. Since the start of the following season, Harman has 26 top-10s on the PGA Tour, which is the most of any player without a win in that span.

Rahm avoids incomplete round

World No. 1 Jon Rahm, as well as 46 other players in the field at Harbour Town, rolled their eyes on Thursday when a huge downpour of rain and thunder suspended play. The 87th Masters was severely impacted by weather, and the field had to play a bit of a marathon on Sunday. Rahm, playing Thursday in a super group with defending Heritage champion Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott, signed for a 72 to sit one-over.

“Nothing was particularly good today but nothing was particularly awful,” Rahm said of his first competitive round as a Masters champ. “I would not have been happy if we couldn’t finish today and had to play 30 holes tomorrow.”

The afternoon suspension also meant 2016 PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker, and five others, could not finish their first rounds as play was suspended at 7.50pm local time. Walker will return to the par-4 eighth at Harbour Town, his 17th, with an eight-footer for birdie to tie for the lead.

Justin Rose, an 11-time PGA Tour winner and former US Open champ, made his 400th career start on tour on Thursday and shot 66 to sit two behind the lead
The youngest player in the field, 20-year-old Tom Kim (71), only beat the oldest player in the field, 58-year-old Davis Love III, by one shot (72).

Playing golf with buddies while Masters coverage blares out of a speaker sounds like a great day for the average golfer. But not necessarily for Rickie Fowler, a former Masters runner-up.

Last week, Fowler was among the notable omissions from Augusta National while Jon Rahm enjoyed a four-shot victory over multiple major winners Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson. He made the most of his week off, however, and didn’t let the Masters consume him, although he did consume plenty of it.

“I was trying to make sure [not competing at the Masters] wasn’t my main focus, so I just had it streaming on my phone while I was out playing [Medalist in Jupiter, Florida],” Fowler said after a solid four-under 67 on Day 1 at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town.

“I was watching quite a bit Friday and Sunday. I kept up with it pretty good. I chose to go play golf and have some fun with some buddies. But I had [my phone streaming] like 50/50 between the broadcasts and the featured groups. When the final group teed off Sunday, I was still out playing golf but then had it on at home [later] on Sunday afternoon.”

It was only five years ago the Californian finished second place to Patrick Reed by one shot at Augusta and played in the second-to-last group with Rahm. Last week, though, Fowler missed his third consecutive Masters while Rahm added the green jacket to his 2021 US Open.

“I mean, yeah, it sucked not being there. It was a bummer. It’s one of my favorite events,” Fowler said. “For me, it’s kind of between that and the Open Championship because I love playing links golf. I feel like [Augusta] asks you to use a lot of creativity as well. The Masters and the Open are the majors I enjoy watching when I haven’t been in them, but the Masters is No. 1.”

The 34-year-old, who in 2014 finished top-five in all four majors, is still hopeful about the rest this year. Fowler has played some excellent golf this season; his runner-up finish to Keegan Bradley at the Zozo Championship in Japan last fall and a tie for 10th at the Valero Texas Open immediately before the Masters were two of the four top-10s he’s recorded already this season.

That form has seen Fowler rocket from the 185th spot he held in the Official World Golf Ranking in September to No. 58 coming into the RBC Heritage.

Fowler is all but assured of qualifying for the PGA Championship from its points system and if he holds onto his current ranking he’d be among the top 60 who get a start at the US Open. The Open Championship would require a further push into the top 50 in the world.

“It’s encouraging how [I’ve] been playing and knowing that [I’m] in a good spot to [try push] back in the top 50 to get in the majors moving forward,” he said. “I’m looking ahead; being back here at Hilton Head and knowing that, hey, we are back in a good spot and we’re not going to be missing majors.”
