Having watched Jordan Spieth burn the edge with potential walk-off birdie putts on the first two playoff holes at the RBC Heritage, Matt Fitzpatrick knew he couldn’t give the tournament’s defending champion any more chances. Not if the 28-year-old Englishman wanted to claim his second career PGA Tour title on Sunday and fulfill a childhood dream of winning at Harbour Town.

Luckily as Fitzpatrick stood over his second shot on the third playoff hole — the third time he had play Harbour Town’s famed 18th in less than an hour — he was more than comfortable with what he was facing: 186 yards to the hole, wind at his back, tournament in the balance. And the result was a shot that will go down in tournament lore:

When Spieth’s approach wound up 33 feet from the hole, and he couldn’t make his birdie, Fitzpatrick closed out a victory.

How did Fitzpatrick get so dialled in? We’ll let him explain:

“The first playoff hole had 179 and hit a 9-iron about 10 yards past the hole. The third playoff hole we had 186 and his 9-iron two inches short. For me it was a perfect yardage. Billy was delighted with the yardage. Said he didn’t have to do much caddieing. It was a great shot.”

No doubt.
