By Ryan Herrington
Within minutes of each other, the PGA Tour and LPGA issued statements Wednesday announcing the cancellation of tournaments scheduled to be held in China in October. Both cited guidance from the China Golf Association about ongoing COVID-19 related restrictions.

The WGC-HSBC Champions was slated for Oct. 27-30 at Sheshan International in Shanghai. It was one of two remaining World Golf Championship events on the PGA Tour schedule. This is the third straight year the event has been cancelled due to COVID. The last playing came in 2019 when Rory McIlroy beat Xander Schauffele in a playoff.

“We have worked with all Tours, as well as the China Golf Association, on the viability of hosting the WGC-HSBC Champions this fall, but unfortunately the logistical implications forced the difficult decision to cancel the event,” said Christian Hardy, PGA Tour Senior Vice President, International. “We are thankful for HSBC’s partnership during these trying times as we continue to navigate the changing COVID-19 climate.”

That same week, the PGA Tour was planning to play the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. The tour announced that the Bermuda event at Port Royal Golf Course will now be a full FedEx Cup points event with a purse of $6.5 million.

The Buick LPGA Shanghai was set for Oct. 13-16 at Qizhong Garden G.C. in Shanghai. This event has also not been held since 2019, when Danielle Kang defended her title. It was to be the first of four straight weeks that the LPGA would be playing events in Asia; the tour still has tournaments in South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Japan slated.

Charles McQuillan

By John Huggan
Comprising three concurrent events for men, women and those with disabilities, the mantra propounded by the grandly-titled ISPS Handa World Invitational at Galgorm Castle & Massereene in Northern Ireland was simple: “inclusion for all.” But, at least as far as the European Tour version is concerned, “life-changing” might have been more appropriate. Recording what was also his first top 10, Daniel Gavins is suddenly a winner on the Old World circuit.

Finishing more than an hour before those seemingly more likely to claim the title, the 30-year old Englishman’s closing bogey-free 65 took him to 13-under par and set a target that appeared to be, at first glance, at least one-shot light of ultimate victory.

Think again. Almost as soon as Gavins holed out on the 18th green, just about everyone in contention began to make mistakes. New Zealander Daniel Hillier’s bogeys at 16 and 17 saw him come up two shots shy of the leader in the clubhouse. Jordan Smith played the last eight holes in three-over and also finished two back. Masahiro Kawamura arrived on the 18th tee needing a birdie to tie — and made bogey.

Which is perhaps not too surprising. With competition from the Olympics in Japan and next week’s World Golf Championship in the United States, the quality/depth of the field suffered. Only five of the 41 men who played all four rounds started the week ranked inside the world’s top 200; as many as 22 were outside the top 400.

Still, of those who will walk away disappointed, eventual runner-up David Horsey will perhaps have most to reflect on. Four times a winner on the European Tour — the last in 2015 — the Englishman hit three wild and costly drives over the last eight holes. He found hazards with the first two, costing him three shots to par, but it was the third off the final tee that proved most crucial. Suffice to say the ball was never found, although Horsey did make birdie with his second ball to at least clinch second place on 268, 12-under par.

Which left the new champion to reflect on a turn of events that has suddenly transformed his life. While he arrived in decent form and on the back of two top 10s on the Challenge Tour, two previous visits to the European Tour in 2016 and 2019 produced only frustration and speedy returns to the lower reaches of the professional game. Indeed, Gavins spent 2018 competing on the third-division EuroPro Tour. Not surprisingly, he was rendered almost speechless, his thoughts all over the place, after watching Horsey’s last despairing effort to tie finish wide of the flag on the par-5 18th.

“I can’t believe this,” he said. “I was seven-shots back going into the last round so my aim was just to play a solid round. I really don’t know what to say. I was a little nervous going out. So all I was really trying to do was shoot as low as I could. I didn’t really think i had a chance to win. Which maybe put me under a bit less pressure. This hasn’t really sunk in yet. It’s just an amazing day. I was actually going to take this week off because I have a lot of Challenge Tour events coming up.”

Those events will still take place. But Daniel Gavins won’t be there. Suddenly, he has somewhere else to play for at least the next 16 months.

By Shane Ryan
“Picture yourself in a boat on a river, with tangerine trees and marmalade skies …”

Or, if John Lennon’s vision of tranquillity isn’t for you, picture yourself walking down the pale green fairways of western Florida, the sun brighter on the water than it is in the sky, everything about your day unnaturally comfortable to the neutral observer, as you, the man in black and gray and black again, barely break a sweat in winning a World Golf Championship. Close your eyes and imagine the feeling of flushing one iron after another, hitting fairway after fairway, while all around, the other best players in the world keep a respectful distance as you coast through a lovely afternoon.

There is reality, and there is perception, and the perception of Collin Morikawa’s three-shot win at the WGC-Workday Championship was one of total ease, a young and absurdly gifted golfer at the peak of his early powers, untouchable on his own plane of existence after shooting an 18-under 270 total at The Concession Golf Club. It was comfortable, and nothing so stressful, nothing with such high stakes, should be this comfortable. The victory, his fourth since turning professional 20 months ago, was a far cry from his PGA Championship win of last August, when a single stroke of genius separated him from a crowded leader board in the final hour. This was front-running at its finest, a no-doubter from 4 p.m. onward (that’s being generous), and it could have been even easier if not for an 11th-hour hiccup on Saturday.

Perhaps the final moment of drama came at the 11th green, when Morikawa, only 24 and now a four-time PGA Tour winner, made a testy 12-foot par putt to avoid the start of … well, something. Or maybe it was as late as the 17th hole, when Brooks Koepka ran his eagle putt 11 feet past the hole and closed the door on the last possibility of a real challenge.

In situations like these, it’s tempting to constantly analyze the things that could go wrong, to go on permanent scan searching for the moment when things will change. And sure, sometimes they do. And sure, asserting that in some cases they never could—that the rhythms of the day were set in stone—is hindsight, golf’s version of shooting an arrow and painting a bullseye around it. Still, to watch Morikawa on Sunday was to watch someone who was just too much better than everyone else to allow for any other outcome.

Of course, inside his own mind the picture wasn’t quite so serene.

“It’s never comfortable,” Morikawa said. “You want to get as comfortable as you can. … There’s a lot of pressure, a lot at stake heading into those last nine holes knowing where you sit. If you look back at my third round, it wasn’t the finish we wanted. I couldn’t have had that today. … We just kept going on shot after shot, giving myself some good looks at birdie. And overall we were just able to kind of wear out the field.”

Morikawa’s steady play is aided by the serenity of his caddie, J.J. Jakovic, a former NCAA D-II champion and player of the year. Mike Ehrmann

There were moments that made you doubt the coronation, briefly. On the par-5 13th hole, after walking past a green feather that he briefly mistook for a caterpillar, and with a bird squawking somewhere in the water to the left, Morikawa reached the green in two but nearly invited disaster with his eagle putt, which raced past the hole and stopped just short of rolling off the ominous front ridge. Maybe that would have re-written the script, but he saved par. And then on the 14th hole, it was right back to the perfectly struck irons, that element of his game which never seems to leave him even on days like Sunday when his new saw grip putting stroke isn’t quite as blazing as days past.

MORE: The future of the PGA Tour is in good hands with Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland and co.

It was a simple matter of plotting his way home after that, easy par after easy par after easy par, and the repeated call of “Nice shot, buddy” from playing partner Billy Horschel was the chorus of the late afternoon. In fact, Horschel is about as comfortable a pairing as you could ask for. He’s been known to show flashes of temper, but in a situation like this, nobody is more friendly or talkative, and he has a special way of lowering the temperature even in the cauldron of a final round.

Morikawa, however, doesn’t mind the chatter. He and his caddie, J.J. Jakovac, keep a constant dialogue throughout their round, and the rapport is a little reminiscent of Jordan Spieth and Michael Greller. Like Spieth, Morikawa seeks reassurance through analysis, and like Greller, Jakovac has the steady, positive bearing and the quick intelligence of someone who is ready to dispense that reassurance at a moment’s notice.

“I got super lucky having him as a caddie,” Morikawa said, “especially just starting off as a professional, to really get such a good guy. And he’s learning, he’s getting better. We’re doing it at the same pace, just trying to figure out how do we work well together and mesh well. You look at all the guys that win every single week, they have to work really well with their caddies. It’s a tough thing to find, but I’ve been very, very lucky to have him on the bag.”

In 20 months as a professional, Morikawa how has four PGA Tour wins, including a major and a WGC title. Mike Ehrmann

After another flawless approach and another par on 15, the two were already discussing the wind on 16 as they left the green, speaking in that terse code—“cross and a little help”—that’s the special province of a golfer and his caddie. (At this point, Horschel had just taken his shoes off to hit his approach from a marshy pond-side lie, and was beginning to understand that the dream of winning was out of reach.) On 16, Morikawa didn’t watch his tee shot—there was no need—made another simple two-putt par, and erased the last vestiges of doubt away with a perfect 315-yard drive to the right fairway on 17.

Now the sun was barely above the pines, and after showing some dissatisfaction with his final tee shot, Horschel broke the last bit of tension.

“Forward,” he said, getting a smile out of Morikawa. “It went forward. That’s all J.J. wanted, is forward.”

Forward was plenty by then, and though his final approach of the day was one of his weakest, he made the up-and-down short right of the green to preserve the three-shot margin, a three-under 69 secured. A wide, professional smile, a wave of the hat, and an appreciative clap to the small gallery completed the performance, the comfortable finish of a player whose private doubts never made it out of his head.

By Joel Beall
Ten months ago Brendon Todd didn’t have tour status. He’s a round away from becoming the Player of the Year favourite.

Todd survived a four-bogey day thanks to five red figures, turning in a one-under 69 for a one-shot lead into the final round of the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

“I’m excited to be in this position and feel like if I can go out there and swing a little better and keep this putting momentum going, I’ll be in good shape,” Todd said.

That Todd remains up top is a testament to his short game. Already one of the shorter hitters on tour—he ranks 209th out of 216 qualified players in distance this season—the 35-year-old was struggling with his driver Saturday, finding the short stuff just half the time en route to a negative -0.613 strokes gained/off-the-tee mark. The approach performance (-.763 strokes gained) wasn’t much better.

“Today was a little more difficult, cooler, a little more moisture out there,” Todd said. “The winds were still up and swirling a little bit, so I thought the golf course still yielded great scores. But for me, made it a little more difficult and I was battling my swing a little bit.”

Yet Todd gained nearly two-and-half strokes on the field with the flat stick on Saturday, converting four birdies from outside 12 feet. On the week he’s up more than nine strokes on the greens over his competition.

“I put in some work with my mental coach on the greens earlier in the week and we just focused on—if I focus on fundamentals, good things will happen,” Todd said. “So for me that means staying steady over the ball, staying down on my putts and having good speed. So those are really the keys to putting and it’s been working really well for me this week.”

It is the fourth time this season Todd will enter Sunday with the lead, converting two of those leads into wins at the Bermuda Championship and Mayakoba Golf Classic last fall. To do so, he’ll have to hold off the likes of Ben An, Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas. Of course, this is a man who battled the yips and contemplated quitting the game. He does not scare easy.

“I think we all, the best players in the world treat each final round like it’s just another day and they just go out there and try to execute and stick to their game and let the results fall as they do,” Todd said.

Brooks’ bounce back
The finger appeared to be on the eject button. Brooks Koepka started Saturday with a double at the second and added a bogey at the sixth. Given Koepka was coming off a rough Friday showing, it appeared whatever momentum conjured off of Thursday’s 62 was shot.

The lesson, as always: Never doubt Brooks Koepka.

Koepka caught fire Saturday afternoon, logging six birdies in an eight-hole stretch. He stumbled at the 17th but still finished with a 68—37 on the front, 31 on the back— putting him three back of Todd.

Despite the parade of birdies it was a par that saved Koepka’s tournament. Koepka’s drive on the 13th went into the native area, with his provisional rolling up against a fence. Koepka was able to find his first shot, which was plugged in the heather, thus bestowing a free drop. From there, Koepka muscled out his approach on the dance floor, saving 4.

In one sense, winning doesn’t necessarily matter for Koepka on Sunday. He is a man judged on four tournaments, and four tournaments alone. Conversely, he’s 30 spots outside the playoffs with 15 days left in the regular season and was coming off a brutal three-tournament stretch (CUT, T-62, CUT). Recapturing that swagger days before his pursuit of a third straight Wanamker Trophy begins is something Koepka, whether he’ll admit it or not, needed to happen. And a development that spells trouble for his competition.

Phil shakes off cobwebs
It has been tough sledding for Phil Mickelson. In six starts since finishing T-3 at Pebble Beach in February, Mickelson has not logged a top 20 and missed the cut three times. The strokes gained metrics aren’t kind, either: 155th in approach, 148th in putting, 115th total. Coupled with his 50th birthday this summer, it was fair to wonder how much gas was left in Lefty’s tank.

Plenty, it turns out. Mickelson, beginning his day eight shots back in a tie for 15th, reached as high as third place on Saturday before a taking a par at the par-5 16th and bogey at the 17th. Still, for a guy in desperate need of, well, something, Saturday’s 66 was a shot of life.

“I hit a lot of good shots, made a lot of good putts and played really well,” Mickelson said. “I let it—you can always look back and you feel like you let a couple go. I wish I would have finished the round off a little better. I wish I had birdied 16 and not bogeyed 17. Those two shots coming down, you’ve really got to close the round out a little better than I did today. But I hit a lot of good shots in the heart of the round, made seven birdies and really had a good day.”

Helping matters are Memphis’ friendly confines. Mickelson owns four top-10 finishes at the St. Jude Classic, and earlier in the week called TPC Southwind one of the more underrated tracks on tour. He’ll need that home cookin’ on Sunday.

“I’m going to have to shoot something really low, probably 63, 64 to have a realistic chance,” Mickelson said. “It’s certainly out there, I’ve shot it before.”

More importantly, it gives Mickelson—never a man short on confidence—conviction in his game heading into the PGA Championship.

Thomas provides update on caddie
Justin Thomas has Jim (Bones) Mackay on this bag for the next two weeks as his regular loop, Jimmy Johnson, is taking time off for his health. Johnson got overheated at the Memorial a few weeks back and felt his body wasn’t up for the task of Memphis and San Francisco. Following his third round, Thomas said Johnson recently underwent a stress test.

“The big thing is he’s fine when he’s inside and not in the severe heat like that,” Thomas said. “The big thing is we’re just trying to figure out what it is or if there’s something in particular, whether it’s some medicine he takes. More often than not it’s not something crazy major. It’s just like I told him and I think that he’s figuring out, it’s a lot bigger than caddying. It’s about his health. I love Jimmy to death, he’s part of the family and I want him over anybody else in the world on my bag for the rest of my careee. But if it means his health, then that’s what it is. So that’s what he’s trying to fix so that he can get himself better first and foremost, and then caddying is just a bonus.”

Thomas said they have ruled out coronavirus, and that Johnson has further tests, scans and X-rays scheduled.

“I told him I’ll be as helpful or as involved or uninvolved as he wants me to be,” Thomas said. “You know, whether he’s here this week or not, he’s still on the team and I’m still a part of his team as well. So I’m going to do and everybody else on my team is going to do what we can to help, but glad he’s home resting right now.”

Thomas shot a four-under 66 on Saturday. The FedEx Cup points leader will enter Sunday four back of Todd and will be looking for his third win and ninth top 10 in 14 starts this year.

The beginning of this week was a noisy one for Patrick Reed, but not by his own doing. He was called out by Brooks Koepka in a radio interview regarding his rules incident at the Hero World Challenge in December, then called out again by former CBS analyst Peter Kostis on a podcast.

Reed responded how he always does, by going out and playing good golf. He opened with rounds of 69 and 63 at the WGC-Mexico, then remained in contention with a Saturday 67. On Sunday, with just four holes remaining, he trailed by a few shots and proceeded to make three straight birdies to reach 19 under. That gave him with a two-shot lead on the final hole, and he was able to bogey his way to a one-shot win over Bryson DeChambeau.

“It’s very rewarding,” said Reed, whose only other WGC win came in this event in 2014, when the tournament was played at Doral. “My team and I have worked so hard through the end of last year and also the beginning of this year. We kept on feeling like we were playing some good golf, just weren’t quite able to get over that hump.

“To come back and win my second World Golf Championship—especially with how I had to finish on basically 15 onwards … the last hole was ugly, but it was what I needed to get the job done.”

Reed often gets the job done in similar situations, having now won by one stroke in seven of his eight PGA Tour wins. The only triumph that didn’t come by one stroke was a two-shot win over Ryan Palmer at the 2014 Humana Challenge.

“Just putting yourself in these positions on Sunday is just unbelievable. It’s a great feeling, and I can’t wait to go home and celebrate it with the little ones and my wife and bring home a trophy.”

DeChambeau looked like he’d run away with the tournament when he reached 18 under at the par-4 14th, but a three-putt bogey at the par-3 17th wound up being the difference. Justin Thomas, who lead by himself after 54 holes, shot a two-over 73 to tie for sixth.

Before his weekend at Royal Portrush, Shane Lowry asserted, victory or not, he’d still be the same golfer with the same level of fame.

“I’ll be getting on an airplane Monday to go to Memphis, regardless of what happens Sunday,” Lowry said. “There’ll probably be 10 men and a dog following me.”

But then the weekend came, and with it, the claret jug, and it appears Lowry’s schedule has slightly changed. On Tuesday, the Irishman pulled out of the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

No official word was given for Lowry’s withdraw, but a quick social search reveals a clue…

Lowry was expected to celebrate his Open triumph in his hometown of Clara on Tuesday evening. Given the festivities that are likely to ensue, that Dublin-to-Memphis commute would have been an overwhelming test of the somatic and psychological limits.

Prior to his Open breakthrough, Lowry’s lone PGA Tour victory came at this event when it was known as the Bridgestone Invitational. The tournament has moved from Firestone to TPC Southwind this season, yet still holds World Golf Championship status.

Despite Lowry’s exit, the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational includes 45 of the OWGR’s top 50 players.

The PGA Tour finishes off its Asian swing this week with the first World Golf Championship of the 2018-’19 season, the WGC-HSBC Champions, held at Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, China.

A field of 78 of the world’s best players will compete for the $10 million purse, $1.6 million of which goes to the winner. A year ago, that man was Justin Rose, who overcame a seemingly insurmountable eight-stroke deficit to catch Dustin Johnson on the final day.

RELATED: Brooks Koepka’s rise to No. 1 creates another first in the history of the Official World Golf Ranking

Rose will begin his title defence alongside Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka, fresh off his four-stroke victory at the CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges. Koepka, now the No. 1 ranked player in the world, is still second to Dustin Johnson when it comes to the favorites to win the tournament, as Johnson is +600 to win and Koepka +675. Rose checks in as the third favorite at +800.

Among the other marquee threesomes includes Johnson’s, as he’ll play with Francesco Molinari and Rory McIlroy in the opening two rounds. All three will be making their season debuts in China. Other stars making an appearance include Jason Day, Jon Rahm, Patrick Reed and 2016 winner Hideki Matsuyama.

The PGA Tour makes its final stop at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio for the foreseeable future this week for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, which will move to Memphis in 2019. It’s the the last World Golf Championship of the season, the previous three being won by Justin Rose, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson, who will all be in the field this week.

But the story, as always, is Tiger Woods, who snuck into the field thanks to his T-6 in the Open Championship at Carnoustie. Woods has won the tournament eight times, the most recent victory being his last one on tour in 2013. That week was highlighted by a second-round 61 from Tiger, propelling him to an eventual seven-stroke victory and his 18th World Golf Championship win.

Woods will look to capture his ninth win at Firestone and his 80th career victory on tour this week alongside Jason Day, whose game hasn’t been as sharp since his second victory of the season in May at the Wells Fargo. Still, he’s managed to finish T-17 or better in three of his five starts since, but will need to improve if he wants to contend for his second major win in the PGA Championship at Bellerive next week. He and Woods tee off on Thursday at 10:20 a.m.
