Belgium’s Manon De Roey and Australia’s Whitney Hillier are both excited to be teeing it up in the first Aramco Team Series event of the year in Singapore.

Last year in Bangkok, it was De Roey who triumphed individually winning by three strokes while Hillier captained her Team to victory.

And the duo are back and hoping that they can replicate their success in Singapore at Laguna National Golf Resort Club.

The Belgian star comes into the tournament in good form having begun her LET season with three top-10 finishes including T3 at the Aramco Saudi Ladies International.

“I was just at home for the past few weeks, the weather was not so great,” said De Roey, who is seventh in the 2023 Race to Costa del Sol.

“It snowed and it was minus three degrees. I saw my coaches a couple of times and I had some stuff that I needed to work on, so I did that. I feel like I’m back stronger and I’m excited for this week.

“I feel like it’s always hard when you get here to adjust to the conditions but once I start playing the course, I don’t feel the heat that much anymore. It’s not too bad.”

The Aramco Team Series event in Singapore will see 78 professionals compete in a 54-hole strokeplay individual competition and 36 teams will compete in a 36-hole tournament.

De Roey is also a captain this week and picked Scotland’s Kylie Henry to play alongside her with the third professional in the team being Sweden’s Emma Nilsson and the LET winner is hoping to have another good week.

“It’s a new course for everyone this week,” she said. “The first few rounds you’re always figuring your way around. Today I played in the Pro-Am, I have a really good feeling about the course and I feel like I have a good game plan for the next few days.

“I was the eighth to last to pick, but Kylie was on the top of my list. She’s a really nice person and is a great player. We have Emma Nilsson as well as the third player, I think we’re going to have a lot of fun which is the most important thing and if you have fun you’re going to play good.”

Similarly, Australia’s Hillier is also excited to be back playing in Asia and teeing it up in the first of five Aramco Team Series events for 2023.

In the draft on Tuesday evening, the Aussie chose Czech Jana Melichova while the duo will also be joined by Wales’ Lydia Hall.

And Hillier believes she has a strong team for the week ahead on a course that can prove to be tricky in places.

“I feel good,” said Hillier. “It’s nice to be back in Asia on the LET and to have another Aramco Team Series event. To be defending captain is very special for me and hopefully, I can lead the team this year.

“I picked Jana, I played with her in Morocco and she played great. She’s a Tour winner, she played great last year and she’s a nice girl so I wanted to pick her and have a great week with her. To have Lydia Hall as our third player, she’s awesome. I have known her for years and years and she’s a great player too. I think we have a pretty strong team.

“The course is sneaky long especially when that wind picks up, you’ve got to really strike the ball quite well here. If you hit a lot of greens, you’ll have a really good chance. The greens are grainy too so that’s an extra challenge. It’s a matter of patience this week.”

Minjee Lee. LET

By Matt Smith
The Australian contingent for the AIG Women’s Open Championship will be hunting more success in Scotland to emulate 2002 champ Karrie Webb and keep up the Aussie major momentum following Cameron Smith’s recent triumph at the 150th men’s Open Championship at St Andrews.

World No. 2 Minjee Lee leads this week’s Australian hopefuls, and is joined by 2019 Women’s PGA Championship winner Hannah Green, 2022 Aramco Team Series – Bangkok team champ Whitney Hillier, 2022 Australian WPGA Championship winner Su Oh and rising star Steph Kyriacou.

Lee claimed her first ever major top 10 in 2015 at this championship, and now has nine to her name including two victories, and will be going for another at Muirfield.

MORE: Muirfield’s long and bumpy road to hosting Women’s Open

The quintet will look to build on Australia’s recent success in Scotland and its history in the Open, which has previously witnessed five Australian champions, including seven-time major champion Webb.

This year’s Women’s US Open champion, Lee, said, “I am really looking forward to closing out the major season at Muirfield for the AIG Women’s Open. I love the challenges presented by links golf and I am really looking forward to playing at Muirfield. It’s been a great few weeks for Australian golf with Cam’s win at The 150th Open and Karrie’s at the Senior LPGA Championship last week, so I will, of course, be trying my best to keep the winning streak running.”

Whitney Hillier

Webb forged the way for young Australians looking to find success in the professional women’s game, leaving a legacy for today’s generations to follow through the famed Karrie Webb Series Scholarship.

Among the recipients of the honour include Lee, Green and Hillier, who will look to build on the tutelage and support from the scholarship, and personal inspiration of Webb, when it comes to round one of the AIG Women’s Open at the home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers.

Webb’s inspiration and legacy in the game was further elevated last weekend as she revisited her infamous duals with fellow legend, Annika Sorenstam, to claim her first Senior LPGA Championship title at Salina Country Club.

Counting down to the final major of the year, Webb said, “As a former winner I am looking forward to watching the AIG Women’s Open next week. The women players are all so incredibly talented that I look forward to seeing how they take on the famed links of Muirfield.”

“Australian golf is so strong at the moment with Cam Smith having just won The 150th Open and Minjee Lee the Women’s US Open in June, I am hoping Australian golf fans will have more to cheer about at the AIG Women’s Open.”

The AIG Women’s Open will take place from August 4-7 at Muirfield.

Whitney Hillier is going places, and quickly.

The Australian maintained a blistering season on the Ladies European Tour with fifth place at the Aramco Team Series — London, five shots behind eventual winner Bronte Law at Centurion Club.

This adds to a whirlwind month or so for the Australian, as it follows on from her team victory at the inaugural ATS event and 2022 series opener in Bangkok in May and an agonising play-off defeat to Tiia Koivisto of Finland at the Jabra Ladies Open in France.

“It has been an incredible few weeks,” Whitney told Golf Digest Middle East as she prepares for the Big Green Egg Open in the Netherlands, the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open at the challenging Dundonald Links in Ayrshire before the AIG Women’s Open at Muirfield at the start of August.

Whitney Hillier has had a tremendous 2022 season so far. Whitney Hillier Twitter

“The ATS team win was special for me because my mum was born in Bangkok and to win in her homeland meant a lot. My game has been trending in a good direction for a few years now, so it’s nice to see the hard work and patience paying off.

“It’s been a big goal of mine to be comfortable being in contention and getting into the playoff at Jabra really solidified the belief I have in my ability under pressure.

“To then keep pushing forwards and play well in London at the Aramco Team Series has given me more belief and confidence to go out and push on for more success.”

The Aramco series has certainly been a happy hunting ground for Hillier, who admits she is enjoying a bit of variety on tour.

“It’s a great concept to give what is usually an individual sport a team element, something we don’t usually get to experience, while also showcasing the level of golf on the Ladies European Tour in a format that is innovative and exciting,” she said, while also acknowledging the boost the ladies game has received from the extra funding coming in from Aramco and Golf Saudi.

“It’s huge for women’s golf. To have the support and funding provided by Aramco and Golf Saudi shows their belief in what we do and is beginning to bring the differences between prize funds in men’s and women’s golf closer together. Increasing our playing and earning opportunities is something we are all really grateful for.”

Whitney Hillier of Australia celebrates her hole in one at Jabra Ladies Tour. Tristan Jones/LET

Whitney also claimed her fifth career hole in one at Evian-les-Bains, the 31-year-old acing the eighth hole on the Day 2 of the Jabra Ladies Open.

“I’ve had a few now,” she laughed. “Unfortunately none of them have come on holes where there’s been a car or a watch on offer so I guess I need to pick and choose a little more carefully!”

Like fellow players Bronte Law, Olivia Jackson and Olivia Cowan, Whitney is happy to see the growth of mixed events on tour, such as the Scandinavian Mixed, where Linn Grant recently defeated the DP World Tour guys to claim the title.

“Playing alongside the guys is always fun, it’s something I’ve had the opportunity to do down in Australia at the Vic Open, so having the chance to do it around the world is exciting,” Hillier said. “Playing for the same prize fund sometimes brings about some complications, and often gets unfairly critiqued as the women’s course needs to be much shorter to make for a fair competition, but it’s definitely always something I enjoy. It was great to see Linn win in Sweden, showing that us girls can really compete against the guys.

“The standard of golf in the ladies’ game is really good and is improving each and every year. To get the recognition it deserves it needs to be showcased in ways that is comparable to how people are able to interact with men’s golf. I think a great way to promote it is to ensure we get as much TV time as possible. Having the mixed events has certainly done that, but whenever people have the access to watch women’s golf and see how good we are, it certainly helps to create bigger fan bases and grow the game for females around the world.”

MORE: LET now a tour de force for Olivia Cowan

Whitney also enjoyed the chance to play at the Centurion Club once again, which is fast making a name for itself with the ATS, and also the money-spinning LIV Golf Invitational Series for the men.

“It’s an awesome golf course,” she said. “Last year we played there for the first time, and it was really wet so played really long. This year it was much firmer and played as it was designed to be played, with the par 5s reachable and the run-offs around the greens being more in play. It’s great that the club has been so accommodating of both the men’s and women’s events.”

Hillier is glad that travel restrictions have been lifted following the COVID-19 lockdown, allowing her to see more of her family back in Australia, while also getting to play more events around the world.

“Throughout Covid, I literally didn’t get a chance to go home to Australia for two years.” she said. “With travel restrictions and other things, it meant I chose to base myself with my fiancé and his family in Lincoln, England.

“It was a perfect opportunity to do some really good work on my swing with my coach Stuart Brewer and helped me to get prepared to come back on tour ready to compete.

“I finally got back to Perth to see my parents at the start of this year and it was amazing to recharge, get my fix of home and ready myself even more for 2022. I’m looking forward to the next few months and hopefully tick off a couple more of my goals for the season.”

German pair Olivia Cowan and Sarina Schmidt have the chance to defend their Aramco Team Series – London team title this week after partnering up for the second year in a row in the tournament draft.

Captain Cowan chose to reunite with Schmidt in the hope of repeating their winning feat from last year’s debut Aramco event, which saw them triumph by three shots and claim the $1million tournament’s maiden fourball title.

That year India’s Diksha Dagar was their randomly assigned third teammate. This time around, French starlet Emma Grechi completes a line-up that will be expected to be in with a challenge this week at Centurion Club, St Albans.

Cowan, 26, said: “We’ve got the band back together, so it should be a good week! We did really well last year, mainly by just supporting each other. I think we’ll be good this year as well.

“I had a few options in the draft just in case Sarina was taken, but obviously I’m delighted I got to pick her.”

Schmidt added: “We had so much fun last year and liked pushing each other. When Olivia holed out for eagle in the final round last year, that was a turning point for us. Hopefully same again this week.”

The Aramco Team Series — London at Centurion Club

Australia’s Whitney Hillier used her captain’s pick to reunite with Finland’s Krista Bakker just a month after the pair won the Aramco Team Series – Bangkok team title together in the first ATS event of the season. Team Hillier will this week also feature Lisa Pettersson of Sweden.

“Krista’s got good vibes and she’s playing well, too, so that’s why I chose her,” said Hillier, whose title in Bangkok was her first in 10 years on the Ladies European Tour.

“We get on so well together – and I just met Lisa as well. She’s a good player too, so I’m excited to get playing tomorrow.”

Other notable captain’s picks included both Georgia Hall and Charley Hull going for the ‘full English’, selecting Lily May Humphreys and Annabel Dimmock respectively.

Former Women’s Open champion Hall said: “I’ve met Lily a few times. She is an up-and-coming player and I’m really excited to spend some time with her. She’s a good player so I look forward to it. It should be a good week.”

On her choice of Annabel Dimmock, Charley Hull said: “I’m just looking forward to having a bit of a laugh out there, so hopefully she just brings some giggles. She’s a pal and it will be a laugh out there.”

And on Norwegian Karoline Lund, who will complete the professional element of Team Hull, the 26-year-old added: “We’ll see if she can take on the English banter!”

Elsewhere, Chloe Williams was picked by fellow Welsh golfer Becky Morgan, with Scot Gabrielle Macdonald completing a Celtic pro-trio for Team Morgan.

Sweden’s Linn Grant – fresh from becoming the first woman to win a DP World Tour event after her nine-shot win at last weekend’s Scandinavian Mixed – also opted for a countrywoman pick, with Sofie Bringer her choice.

For the third time in Aramco Team Series history, Bronte Law selected her hero Solheim Cup captain Catriona Matthew as her pick.

“She’s a major champion and is a very good golfer,” said Law, who finished T6 in the U.S Women’s Open earlier this month. “I think this event requires stable players who can contribute frequently. Catriona is that person.”

This week’s London leg is the second of five $1million Aramco Team Series tournaments on the LET calendar for 2022. It is famed for its unique format, in which three LET professionals play in teams with one amateur player.

It returns to Centurion Club with a new format from last year’s inaugural Series. For this season, the teams will compete over only 36 holes – the Thursday and Friday of the tournament – with $500,000 prizemoney being split between the lowest scoring fourballs.

Saturday’s final day of play will see only the lowest scoring 60 players and ties from the opening two days return to the course to battle it out for a share of another $500,000, this time in individual earnings.

Finland’s Tiia Koivisto claimed her first Ladies European Tour title in dramatic fashion as she edged out Australia’s Aramco Team Series — Bangkok chap Whitney Hillier at the Jabra Ladies Open.

The 28-year-old fired a final round of five-under-par 66 to set the clubhouse target at Evian Resort Golf Club in France.

Hillier carded a 69 to join her on six-under-par after 54 holes, forcing a play-off down par-5 18th hole.

Fellow Finnish LET player Sanna Nuutinen joined Koivisto to act as her caddie for the play-off, returning the favour after Koivisto caddied for her when she won on the LET Access Series.

After claiming the title on the second extra hole, Koivisto said: “It feels amazing. I actually made one of my first LET starts here in Evian and now I’ve won it, so I just can’t believe it.”

The win was also her first cut made in five appearances in the event.

“I’ve been putting so well the whole week and today I was hitting some good shots so I got the job done.

“I was checking the scores on 16 and before I hit my second shot on 18, so I knew I had to make a birdie there and I went for it.

“Sanna was caddying for me on the play-off hole and she’s one of my best friends so it was great to have her on the bag to make me more relaxed. We talked through all the shots. I knew that if I made a good stroke on the last putt I could do it, and when it went in, it felt so good.”

Koivisto also earned a place in the field for The Amundi Evian Championship, which will be her first appearance in a major. She also moved into fifth place on the LET’s Race to Costa del Sol Rankings.

While Hillier finished in second place, Leonie Harm and Johanna Gustavsson, who is getting married this week, tied for third position on three-under-par.

Pia Babnik, the defending champion, also fired a 66 and tied for fifth place with Carmen Alonso on two-under-par.

By Matt Smith
Patty Tavatanakit held on to her individual lead as Team Hillier triumphed at the Aramco Team Series – Bangkok on Friday.

The innovative Ladies European Tour tournament runs a three-day individual strokeplay competition alongside the two-round, four-player team event and it was Whitney Hillier and her crew that came out on top to lift the team trophy at Thai Country Club.

Hillier, Chonlada Chayanun, Krista Bakker and amateur Pattanan Amatanon backed up their excellent first round to seal a three-stroke victory with a 15-under-par final round.

It was a first LET title for Hillier and Chayanun, while it is back-to-back victories for Bakker, who was part of Team Pedersen in Jeddah last November.

Captain Hillier said: “I’m so proud of my team. Even from the start of yesterday morning we just had a good vibe. Everything just flowed and obviously we played great golf, but we had a lot of the fun, so that was the most important thing too. This is my 10th year on tour, and for my first win to be in a team event, like that’s pretty cool. I’m just looking forward to tomorrow too, now.”

Bakker added: “It’s great to be here winning again. We had so much fun and as Whitney said, yesterday we started to play good right away and making birdies.”

It was a fantastic day for Chayanun, whose home club is Thai Country Club, in the Individual competition as she carded a 67 (-5) to help her team and climb up the individual leaderboard.

“I’m just happy,” she said. “I never thought about winning and we did it as a team, so I’m really happy. I’m so proud of my team. Everything was perfect today. I made so many pars and had like eight birdies, so that’s the secret. I got so much good energy from my team. They are really supportive, so that just made me keep going.”

Team Simmermacher led by Magdalena Simmermacher alongside Charlotte Liautier, Isabella Deilert and amateur Sirapob Yapala, finished in second place on 28-under, while Team Tavatanakit were third with a total of -26 and one shot further back in a tie for fourth place were Team Moriya Jutanugarn and Team Lampert.

Patty Tavatanakit.
In the individual competition, which concludes on Saturday, Tavatanakit signed for a three-under 69 to improve to nine-under.

The Major winner (she claimed the 2021 ANA Inspiration) rolled in birdies on seven and nine before dropping a shot on the 12th, but the Thai star rolled in back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 to hold a two-shot lead heading into the final day.

“It was pretty good,” said Tavatanakit. “Walking off the course without my A game and being on top of leaderboard is always a nice feeling. If anything, just seeing a little bit of confidence that I left a lot out there and a lot of things could be improved tomorrow. I didn’t really have the right flow today, but I stayed patient and a couple putts dropped at the end so that helped a lot.”

England’s Felicity Johnson and Belgium’s Manon De Roey sit two shots off the lead on seven-under having fired rounds of 68 and 67, respectively.

“I played nicely and played really steady, I’m happy with my rounds from today and yesterday,” said Johnson. “I hit a lot of fairways and greens.

“Myself and my caddie did a lot of good work at the start of the week of where we’re trying to hit approach shots and to figure out the grain as the ball is making its way to the hole on the greens.”

De Roey added: “I feel great, I was just playing for the team today and trying to make as many birdies as possible. Last week I wasn’t playing my best golf, but I was able to make a lot of birdies and that built my confidence for this week, and I feel a bit more comfortable.”

Two-time Major winner Ariya Jutanugarn is on six-under alongside Sweden’s Johanna Gustavsson with five players in a tie for sixth place on five-under including Scotland’s Catriona Matthew, who fired the best round of the day with a 66.

“I haven’t been playing much or practicing so didn’t quite know what to expect,” said the two-time winning Solheim Cup captain.

“I played well today, and I putted well. Kind of every little thing everything went for me. I’m disappointed in my finish. As a golfer you’re never too thrilled, but overall delighted.

“I picked out a new putter just before I came here and that’s been working so well. My caddie reads the greens great, so I just leave it to her, and she just points, and I try and hit it where she says.”

Local hope Patty Tavatanakit felt right at home in Thailand on Thursday as she lead the $1 million Aramco Team Series — Bangkok by one shot after an opening-round six-under at Thai Country Club.

The world No. 13 made the most of home advantage to finish one above Spanish starlet Ana Pelaez going into Friday’s second round.

Team Hillier, captained by Australia’s Whitney Hillier and featuring Chonlada Chayanun — playing her home course — Krista Bakker of Finland, and amateur Pattanan Amatanon lead at the halfway point in the tournament’s fourball format, after carding a day’s low of 16-under.

“It was really fun,” said Tavatanakit, the 2021 LPGA Rookie of the Year. “I kept my round going well. The team format is a little different. Being able to play with everyone at the same time and make birdies, cheering them on, it’s a really good feeling.

“It’s a format that relaxes you. I was really calm today and I felt like mistakes were fine, because I had other people there [to support] as well.”

The Aramco Team Series — Bangkok

Instead of opting for the player hotel, Tavatanakit is staying with her family in Bangkok this week — and has a friend from home, Dan, on her bag.

Asked if being one of the hometown heroes brought with it an extra level of playing pressure, the 22-year-old added: “I want to do well everywhere I play. I treat every week just like a normal event regardless of where I am, so I’m just here to play another tournament.

“Today, I read the greens really well. I was surprised actually that I didn’t really get more right reads or right breaks on the practice rounds, but today I think I was a little bit more focused and Dan really helped me.”

Breakout Spanish star Pelaez sits one back after a quite remarkable opening day bogey-free 67.

The 24-year-old only arrived in the Thai capital on Tuesday night after securing a late entry to the $1 million event following her shock six-stroke victory at the Madrid Ladies Open.

With storms delaying her Wednesday’s afternoon practice, Pelaez — who drove for five hours, then took three flights over 24 hours to reach Bangkok — arrived at Thai Country Club in the morning.

She used Google Earth to learn about the course, before going out for a birdie-birdie-birdie finish in here five-under.

“Honestly, I’m actually speechless,” said Pelaez. “I had a great round. I had a lot of fun. I had to be patient because I started par, par, par, birdie, par, birdie — then I didn’t get another birdie until hole 16. And then I finished with three in a row, so I’m extremely happy. A boost of confidence for tomorrow actually.

“I’m just happy we were able to get everything in place and that I’m here. I cannot believe I’m actually awake after traveling so much and all the emotions. I should be wasted, but I’m good.”

Team Hillier hold their own one-shot advantage going into what will be the closing day of the Aramco Team Series — Bangkok’s $500,000 team competition.

Their 16-under total was enough to give them a slender advantage heading into Friday’s deciding final round.

“We just made birdies early,” said Australian Whitney, who is half-Thai. “We had a good vibe and everyone was gelling pretty well – everyone was laughing and happy. So, yeah, good team. We played well.”

Team Magdalena Simmermacher (Charlotte Liautier, Isabella Deilert and amateur Sirapob Yapala) sit on 15-under, one ahead of the teams captained by Scotland’s Kylie Henry and Patty Tavatanakit.
