As a golf-loving parent, there are few things more rewarding than seeing your young child get into the game. Sadly, I’m not quite there yet with my own toddlers, but I’ve seen plenty of this, including a pair of co-workers’ kids making holes-in-one this year. Lucky beggars.

But in spreading this great game to the next generation, you’re also exposing children to a lot of unnecessary frustration. Allow us to present the following short video as Exibit A:

Welcome to the greatest game in the world little man, it doesn’t get any easier ??? pic.twitter.com/a5AS6FolV3

— Flushing It (@flushingitgolf) May 4, 2022

Classic. The tiny dude whiffs twice with the club, then once with his hand when he takes a swipe at it. Then he resorts to kicking it a couple times before finally launching the ball in the air with the old hand wedge. What a perfect first meltdown. The kid is a natural.

But seriously, don’t sweat it, little man. Everyone who has ever picked up a golf club feels your pain.

By Joel Beall
In case golf needed a reminder that Tiger Woods doesn’t so much move the needle as he is the needle, Masters Sunday served as a shout-from-the-rooftops reminder. Despite fears that the moved-up tee times—the leaders went off five hours earlier due to weather threats—could wreak havoc on its viewership, CBS Sports broke a record for the highest viewership for a morning golf telecast in history with an average of 10.8 million people tuning in. Just as impressive, a rerun of the broadcast averaged 4.5 million viewers. For context, that made it the second-highest golf broadcast (not counting the Masters’ morning viewing) of the year, only behind Saturday’s third-round coverage from Augusta National.

That magnetism manifested on social media as well.

Cam Rogers, who runs a Tiger-themed podcast, made an astute observation on Monday morning: in just one week, video of Woods’ winning Masters putt already has 7.4 million more views than Patrick Reed’s from a year ago.

Tiger Woods is golf example #1,098,334

The Masters tweets out video of the final putt from the champion each year. Patrick Reed's winning putt from 2018 has been viewed 393,000 times.

Tiger's winning putt has been viewed 7.9 million times.

— Cam Rogers (@MrRogers99) April 22, 2019

According to my MAC education, that’s over 20 times as many clicks. In one week. A figure so astonishing we had to double-check, and sure enough, the numbers don’t lie:

Roaring back.#themasters pic.twitter.com/nlTwxWJW8X

— The Masters (@TheMasters) April 14, 2019

Here's the putt that won it all for Patrick Reed at the 2018 Masters!

?: @TheMasters
pic.twitter.com/EGWX5vpmWQ

Granted, Reed’s tap-in wasn’t exactly must-see theatre, and for reasons that became justified as the year went on, Reed’s on the other end of the popularity spectrum from Big Cat. Nevertheless, given it was Reed who threw Tiger under the bus, we’re sure this ratio won’t be regurgitated by Woods the next time they cross paths.

Edoardo Molinari volunteered for what seemed to be a fun experiment ahead of this week’s Italian Open on the European Tour. Now, we just hope the former Ryder Cupper can recover from what wound up being a torturous 12-hour exercise in futility.

The task appeared simple and enjoyable: Take 500 attempts at trying to make a hole-in-one on a beautiful day. And wouldn’t you know it, Molinari came inches away from making an ace on his first attempt. But by the end, the three-time European Tour winner and the 2005 U.S. Amateur champ had resorted to throwing clubs, talking to himself, and even praying.

You can’t blame him when you watch how excruciatingly close he came (You also can’t help but feel bad for that tee box, which got absolutely torn to shreds). Attempt No. 74 skirted the edge of the hole. Attempt No. 361 came up just short. And then there’s what happened on attempt No. 153 when Molinari nearly jarred his shot on the fly, only to see it pop out of the cup. Edoardo was NOT thrilled with that.

Anyway, here’s Edoardo’s entire day boiled down to six minutes in the European Tour’s latest fun film, Chase The Ace. Enjoy:

How many shots would it take a pro to make a hole-in-one?

We gave @DodoMolinari 500 balls, here’s what happened… pic.twitter.com/AcTwKiplYp

Hang in there, Edoardo. On the bright side, you should be extra dialled in with your 9-iron this week.

By Alex Myers
It’s easy to find videos of unusual and awful golf swings out there. Heck, have you actually tried watching your own swing? It’s probably not pretty. But rare is the hideous swing that actually works. Enter this lady who played in the Web.com Tour’s Albertson Boise Open pro-am on Wednesday.

We don’t know her name, but we know she has one of the most unorthodox golf swings we’ve ever seen in which she turns her body perpendicular to her original line before lunging at the ball. And yet, she crushes it off the tee, according to playing partner and tour pro Steve Wheatcroft, who shared this remarkable video as proof:

There's pro am swings, and then there's this. I'm not making fun, I'm amazed. Actually can move it 200+. #awesome #albertsonsboiseopen pic.twitter.com/t4tH4VtBUY

— Steve Wheatcroft (@wheatiePGA) September 14, 2017

That is a pure strike. It’s reminiscent of former MLB pitcher Luis Tiant, who used to turn his back to home plate before spinning around and hurling a pitch.

Obviously, no PGA pro would teach this woman’s action, but she does some nice things that cause her to hit the ball so cleanly. Leaning into the shot as she does promotes a proper weight shift and keeps her from coming over the top on the downswing. And you certainly can’t accuse her of not making a full turn in the backswing.

We’re not sure if that one-handed follow-through is intentional or just for show. Either way, this woman is a marvel of biomechanics, and in her own way, a legendary ball-striker.
