After this incredible Twitter exchange, we are closer than ever to discovering the account's true identity.

No sport on earth does worst-kept secrets quite like golf. The NBA gives it a run for its money and God only knows what happens in professional curling, but nothing breeds whispers, rumour and hearsay quite like a sport where you literally have to whisper. Of all of golf’s unspoken certainties, however, none has been more obvious (or hilarious) in recent years than the identity of the infamous @useGolfFACTS Twitter admin.

Our big brothers at Golf Digest have dug deep into the suspiciously pro-Patrick Reed Twitter account in the past, and while no official conclusions were reached (Pat doesn’t need another lawsuit on his hands, let’s be honest), the overwhelming consensus is that the mastermind behind @useGolfFACTS is none other than Reed’s wife Justine.

This has been neither confirmed nor denied by the Reeds, but in the wee hours of Monday morning we got the closest thing to an admission yet when a joke about Justine’s, um, specific taste in sporting-event seating prompted this instantly iconic reply:

These look like nice seats to me! pic.twitter.com/l0hO5GDbrH

— GolfFACTS (@useGolfFACTS) April 17, 2023

This isn’t exactly Paul Bremer saying “Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.” It’s not the FBI finding Whitey Bulger kickin’ it in Santa Monica, but in the weird, wild, insular world of Golf Twitter, it’s pretty darn close.

The tweet by No Laying Up’s Tron Carter specifically references Justine Reed’s outburst following a 2018 Boston Red Sox game, in which she characterized their premium baseline seats as the “line-drive section” and slammed the PGA Tour for providing the tickets (for the record, all 30 MLB teams instituted netting in 2018). With Patrick Reed seen taking in an Australian rules football game ahead of LIV Golf’s Adelaide stop this week, the waters were ripe for fishing and @useGolfFACTS—either unthinkingly or simply because they do not care anymore—gobbled up the bait.

Perhaps this won’t be the end of the saga. Part of us even hopes it’s not, if only for the laughs. But if this is truly the pulling of the curtain—the ‘Wizard of Oz’-ian reveal we have long pined for—then there’s nothing to say but congratulations. In today’s day and age, where everyone knows everything about everybody in three clicks and a swipe, Justine—or whoever—had a hell of a run.

By Matt Smith
Only six weeks after a piece of IKEA furniture threatened to throw a spanner into his marriage, PGA golfer Adam Hadwin is in trouble with wife Jessica yet again.

Following a best-ever finish in a major at the US Open at the Country Club in June, Adam was nearly defeated while attempting to assemble a TV unit at home, and — as they do for all of us when faced with those flat-pack wooden slabs, a bag of screws and that darned Allen key — tensions rose in the Hadwin household.

Thankfully, Jessica was on hand to comedically give us Twitter-based updates throughout the traumatic time, and the happy ending.

And we’re off! Do we get this done today? Will @ahadwingolf say it’s missing a piece at least 5 times? Will we still be married? Stay tuned! pic.twitter.com/QKAsDeUJ9t

— Jessica Hadwin (@jessicahadwin) June 21, 2022

However… It looks like Adam is back in the doghouse for this fashion faux pas:

Y’all pray for @ahadwingolf … today I came out of a dressing room to model my adorable outfit for an upcoming trip we are taking, and he said, AND I QUOTE “does that jacket feel a little tight?”

Oh Adam, that is Things Not To Say To Your Wife: 101.

I guess he can smooth things over with a little shopping trip, as Jessica is fond of a trip to the store:

Decided to get ahead of things and spare @ahadwingolf the standard confirmatory text that our credit card wasn’t stolen.

Icon Sportswire

By Joel Beall
Patrick Reed’s behaviour has occasionally been cloaked in smoke. That behaviour appears to extend to the realm of social media.

Reed’s official Twitter handle has long been noted for blocking media and golf fans from viewing Reed’s accounts. In itself this is not newsworthy; plenty of athletes and personalities block users who criticize them, although the amount of people who assert Reed has muted them is prodigious. However, there are still Twitter users who are able to see Reed’s Twitter activity, and one of Reed’s tweets over the weekend was a curious replica of another Twitter account.

Following Reed’s controversial drop during the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open, Reed’s official Twitter account sent the following reply at 8:09 PM ET to a Twitter thread involving CBS Sports’ Amanda Balionis: “RORY MCILROY @McIlroyRory DID THE SAME THING TODAY ON HOLE 18! AND DIDN’T EVEN CALL A RULES OFFICIAL OVER TO DEEM THE BALL EMBEDDED. END OF STORY.” Twitter users quickly pointed out that the account handle “useGolfFACTS” had sent a very similar message (ultimately sent 16 times) to various Twitter accounts in defence of Reed. The “useGolfFACTS” account’s first message about Reed/Rory was sent at 7:59 PM, the last at 8:44 PM.

The parallels were noteworthy due to year-long speculation that the “useGolfFACTS” account is affiliated with Reed, his family or team. A look into the account’s replies shows heavy activity in defence of Reed from various allegations throughout his career. However, the account has done more than defend Reed, making numerous critical and disparaging remarks toward Reed’s fellow competitors and the PGA Tour.

RELATED: Patrick Reed’s runaway win in the Farmers Insurance Open will be shadowed by questions and controversy

The “useGolfFACTS” handle has routinely knocked Justin Thomas, among the complaints that Thomas didn’t deserve to be on the cover of the PGA Tour’s 2K21 video game, that Thomas “is a taker,” and that Thomas shouldn’t get his $2 million Wyndham Rewards bonus because he didn’t play in the Wyndham Championship. There was also a shot at Thomas’ temperament. “His bad attitude and actions were on full display and it was disrespectful to Niemann-his playing partner,” the account asserted on Jan. 4, 2020.

Xander Schauffele was another of the account’s targets. Also on Jan. 4, 2020, under a Golf Channel headline on Schauffele’s odds to repeat at the 2020 TOC, the “useGolfFACTS” handle replied, “Someone should check his new driver to make sure it is conforming,” alluding to Schauffele’s driver failing R&A compliance at the 2019 Open Championship. The account also alleged Schauffele patted down the rough at the 2020 TOC, attaching a video of Schauffele making practice swings.

The “useGolfFACTS’’ account has also routinely criticized the PGA Tour, making complaints about the tour’s pay structure (“More like Tour greed will kill the golden goose. They should offer all top 125 players a base salary, every year. And they don’t even do that”), pin placements that favour certain players, the tour’s leader board app and the tour’s selection of featured pairings. Other notable comments from the “useGolfFACTS” account include that the green jacket should not have been awarded at the 2020 Masters since no fans were on property and calling the Ryder Cup team selection process into question.

But to those who believe Reed’s tweet on Saturday is the smoking gun, Reed’s attorneys say that’s not necessarily the case. In response to a Golf Digest email about Reed’s Saturday night Tweet and his connection with “useGolfFACTS,” Reed’s lawyer, Phillip B. Costa, replied, “Please be advised that the person who manages Patrick Reed’s Twitter and Instagram accounts does not run the @ use GolfFACTS account.” As of writing, a direct message to the “useGolfFACTS” account from Golf Digest has not been returned.

Why does this matter? In addition to ensuring some awkward tournament pairings, proof of Reed’s direct involvement with a Twitter account that disparages the tour and other players would appear to be in breach of a section of the player code of conduct that addresses such public criticism. A PGA Tour spokesperson told Golf Digest the tour has no comment on the matter. As of writing, Golf Digest has not received a response for comment from Thomas or Schauffele.

By Ryan Herrington
Max Homa Twitter fans, you have reason to rejoice: Your man’s Twitter sabbatical is over. On Monday afternoon, the 29-year-old let his voice be heard once again on the social media platform.

Had a nice little detox from Twitter. Felt kinda like a juice cleanse but with fewer bowel movements. Still some, no doubt, but fewer. Anyways, it’s good to be back. Hating hours are closed indefinitely, myself included. This is gunna be a positive place in this pit of despair

— max homa (@maxhoma23) July 27, 2020

Homa is considered by many the funniest PGA Tour pro on Twitter, having earned his 163,000-plus followers with a mix of blunt honesty, snarky humour, unending self-deprecation and Hall-of-Fame-level swing-roasting. Yet devoted followers of the 2019 Wells Fargo champ were pained by the fact that he had not sent out a message since missing the cut at the Memorial on July 17 and posting this:

The game is close. Working too hard not to see a breakthrough soon. Thanks again for all the support, it means a lot. Gunna play some great #golf for the rest of the season. On to Minnesota

— max homa (@maxhoma23) July 18, 2020

This past weekend at the 3M Open, Homa shot a third-round 64 at TPC Twin Cities to get within three strokes of the lead. After the round, he was asked about what his followers might think of his Saturday performance, in which he had eight birdies and just one bogey, his best score since February. For followers, he offered this disappointing response:

“I couldn’t tell you, I don’t go on it anymore,” Homa said. “Yeah, hopefully … I couldn’t really care.”

Oh my!

RELATED: Here are some of Max Homa’s all-time best tweets

It’s no secret that the Twitter-sphere is over-populated with mouthy hooligans just waiting to tear down everybody and anybody who’ll put themselves and their feelings down in 280-character bites. Homa, however, had held his own against the haters and the trolls, making him a hero of sorts for taking on the worst kind of social-media flotsam.

Sadly, however, the constant jabs appeared finally to have been too much for Homa, who signalled that there was a change a coming.

I’m gunna tweet like the other professional golfers’ agents tweet (for them) for a while. See if it’s less mind-numbing and divisive lol reading some responses can’t be good for winning tournaments and I wanna win tournaments. On to Muirfield Village pic.twitter.com/7oOictpxH4

— max homa (@maxhoma23) July 5, 2020

Also not helping is the fact that his game has been a bit up-and-down since the PGA Tour’s restart in June. Prior to this week’s event, Homa has played in five of six tournaments but made the cut just once, a T-41 finish at the RBC Heritage. That said, three top-10 finishes just before the break have Homa easily into the FedEx Cup Playoffs (he was 66th on the points list entering the 3M) and with any sort of turn around, he has a shot at reaching the Tour Championship for the first time in his career.

Homa was in contention late on Sunday at the 3M, shooting a closing 67 to finish in a nine-way tie for third place. That jumped him to 50th in the FedEx Cup standings. Afterward, he did not mention whether he might return to social media. No doubt fans were hoping that his solid play might engender a perfunctory recap tweet on Sunday night, but were left hanging until Homa finally surfaced on Monday.

If that had been the end for Homa on social media, it would have been truly disappointing. Homa has exactly the right voice and mentality for the medium. Twitter followers would have had no one to blame but themselves for this sad twist.

Thankfully, the haters didn’t win.

By Brian Wacker
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France—There are myriad reasons the United States got drubbed by the Europeans in this year’s Ryder Cup at Le Golf National, from questionable captain’s picks that accounted for a scant two points (compared to 9.5 from Europe’s four picks), to being badly outplayed (the 17.5 to 10.5 beatdown was the second-largest margin of victory in the history of the event since Continental Europe joined the fray in 1979).

One of the more curious decisions of the week and a white elephant in the room, however, was the breaking up of supergroup Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth.

The 28-year-old Reed and 25-year-old Spieth had been a formidable duo in two Ryder Cups and two Presidents Cups, rolling up an 8-1-3 record together, which included a pair of 3&2 smack downs of Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson and another 2&1 victory over them at the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National, won by the Americans.

When it came to the 42nd edition of the matches this week, though, the two strangely never played together. They were grouped in the same practice round pods early in the week, but when the shots counted for real Reed ended up with Tiger Woods, and was summarily blanked in two four-ball sessions. Spieth, meanwhile, was paired with good friend Justin Thomas for each of the four-ball and foursomes sessions, and they were an impressive 3-1 together.

The split worked out just fine for Spieth. No so much for Reed.

The player who earned the moniker “Captain America” after leading the U.S. in points with some epic performances in the 2014 and 2016 Cups struggled mightily around Le Golf National, particularly in Saturday morning’s four-ball match when he looked more like Aquaman with several balls finding the water and one shot going out of bounds. He made just one birdie and he and Woods got smoked by Moliwood—Europe’s newest supergroup of Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood that surely won’t be split up anytime soon—5&4 to give the Europeans a key point in a session it won 3-1 (the same tally it was out scored by the morning before) and provide momentum going into the afternoon.

More telling than the result, perhaps, was that the breakup of the band shed light on the dynamic between two of the Americans’ more prominent players.

Back in March, in a ruling at Bay Hill during the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Reed cracked that he would have received a free drop if his name was Jordan Spieth. It was an interesting take.

Then on Sunday morning, a twitter account that appeared to belong to Reed’s wife Justine blasted out several missives that suggested Spieth was the one behind the decision, with Justine telling one responder to “ask Jordan” about the split and saying, “You don’t have to love the people you work with – but when you have chemistry and success, you go with it for the TEAM.”

She also took a swipe at a tweet from the editor of GolfChannel.com that was critical of her husband’s poor play and suggested that Woods, Thomas and Rickie Fowler could have worked interchangeably as partners in order to keep the Spieth-Reed pairing together.

Tracked down by GolfDigest.com during her husband’s singles victory over Tyrrell Hatton later that afternoon, Reed’s wife when asked if she was behind the account or the tweets said, “I don’t know anything about that.” She then added she wasn’t doing any interviews.

Things only grew more strange from there.

In the U.S. team press conference afterward, with Reed and Spieth seated at opposite ends of the dais, the two looked awkwardly at one another when asked if they were surprised they didn’t play together and if the possibility of doing so had been discussed.

“No, we weren’t [surprised],” Spieth said. “We were totally involved with every decision that was made. Jim allowed it to be a player friendly environment, and we were involved and we thought that the teams that came out of our four-man squad, we had two potentially fantastic teams. We went out confidently and tried to play our best.”

Before Reed could respond, Furyk, being the good chief he is fell on the sword and interjected.

“Jordan and Patrick have been great in the past,” he said. “Whether that’s a point of contention or not I felt we had two great pairings out of it. So it was totally my decision and my call.”

And it was a call that like many this week will continue to get scrutinised for a long time to come.

Phil Mickelson knows how to play to a crowd, so it’s not surprising the 48-year-old’s long-awaited introduction to Twitter incited its share of commotion. Also not surprising: Mickelson’s social-media tenor has been…well, that of a 48-year-old. From his first message to the orchestrated banter between he and Tiger Woods, the five-time major winner’s account has been the embodiment of a “dad joke.”

Which raises a question: how do Mickelson’s kids feel about his new endeavor?

As one can imagine, not great.

“They are nervous,” Mickelson said to laughter during the Northern Trust. “And they should be, you know, rightfully so, because in time, I will mess up. I always kind of ride the line somewhere. Sometimes I cross it. Sometimes not.

“But it’s going to be fun. I think it’s going to be fun. I’ll give it a few weeks, see how it goes, but right now it’s been really fun.”

Got to feel for Phil’s kids. Let he who hasn’t been embarassed by their parents cast the first stone, after all. But give the man credit: it’s not like he’s ignoring their plight.

“I’m really trying to leave them out of it,” Mickelson said. “I know I want to respect their privacy, too, but this is a fun way for me to be involved directly without…I don’t need to drag them into it.”

We’re sure that doesn’t make the Mickelson kin breathe any easier—especially since Mickelson asserted an Instagram account is not far on the horizon. That being said, if they’ve survived the wave of Mickelson dance memes, we’re sure they can handle whatever Phil has in store.

Of course, Thomas played alongside Dustin Johnson, who managed a 67 to grab a four-shot lead and an eight-shot edge over the man he just replaced atop the Official World Golf Ranking. The good news for Thomas is that the nice weather is supposed to continue for the rest of the tournament. If he’s going to catch DJ, he’s going to have to start making birdies fast.

Golf’s social media queen could also be invited to be an official starter for the men at January’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

By Kent Gray
Organisers hope Paige Spiranac will again lend her social media celebrity to December’s Omega Dubai Ladies Masters but admit “we may not put her through the trauma of playing” the season-ending Ladies European Tour [LET] event.

Tournament Director David Spencer has revealed the 24-year-old American is likely to be offered an ambassadorial role at the €515,000 tournament from December 6-9 after emotionally missing the cut at the LET event the past two seasons.

Spencer is also hopeful the aspiring professional golfer will consider returning to act as the official starter for the men at the European Tour’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic, also at Emirates Golf Club, in late January.

Enter the Golf Digest Amateur Series today! CLICK HERE for Abu Dhabi GC event this Thursday

Asked if Spiranac would again be invited to the Ladies Masters, Spencer told Golf Digest Middle East: “Maybe, but we may not put her through the trauma of [actually] playing.“

Related Video: Spiranac hopes to ‘save someone’s life’ by speaking out on cyber bullies

“We’re hoping to bring her to the ladies and the men’s [Desert Classic] and we’re actually considering asking her to be the starter at the men’s event, the official starter.”

Spiranac made her professional debut, and created a global media storm, at the 2015 Dubai Ladies Masters courtesy of a controversial sponsors’ invite.

When the Instagram superstar returned to Dubai last December, she tearfully admitted to an on-going struggle with depression and anxiety due to cyber bullying in the wake of her rounds of 77-79 the previous year.

She had toyed with quitting the game after “the hardest experience of my life” but felt compelled to fight on and speak out given concerning teen suicide rates. “Hopefully I can save someone’s life, I think that’s so much more important than if I make the cut or miss the cut,” she said at the time.

Video: Paige Spiranac’s Top 3 short game tips

Sadly, Spiranac continued to be targeted by faceless online trolls after carding rounds of 77 and 80 on the Majlis layout to finish 13 over par, nine shots shy of the cut which fell at +4, last year.

Spencer took plenty of heat when he first invited Spiranac to Dubai and expects fall-out from the lastest decision. But he remains unapologetic, insisting Spiranac had significantly raised the profile of the Dubai Ladies Masters and would continue to do so in an ambassadorial role.

“We took a lot of criticism for that [the 2015 sponsors’ invite] too but we are happy to stand by what we’ve been criticised for,” said Spencer, who also serves as a strategic adviser to Falcon Golf who now run both the Ladies Masters and Desert Classic.

“In my life I’ve been lucky enough to be in golf situations and see which golfers light up a room when they walk into it and I include in that [list] Seve, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman and Tiger, of course.

“But the one I’d add to that is Paige, in that she has great presence, she’s an interesting character, she’s got lots of interesting [charity] causes. Apart from being physically beautiful, which she obviously is, she’s got a heart of gold and that comes across in corporate situations.“

David Cannon/Getty Images Spiranac during the second round of the 2015 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters.

Spencer admitted sponsors were initially reluctant for the tournament to be associated with Spiranac who profits from 1.2m followers on Instagram, and more than 235,000 and 162,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter respectively. But he said corporate backers had done a “complete 180 degree turn” and now, “I mean, they just love her.”

Related: Paige Spiranac and her crazy professional debut

“We think what may be happening is that people think this social media [strategy] is a sexist thing but I was so heartened at that public clinic [involving Spiranac] last year when we had all the young golfers there [watching],” Spencer said.

“There is obviously a connection to golf via social media and we’ve got to be competitive with other sports [and in the entertainment space]. It’s not easy to get sponsorship, whatever sport you have.”

Whatever transpires with Spiranac, four-time defending champion Shanshan Feng won’t return to defend her title due to a prior engagement back in China.

“Shanshan has requested a leave pass and [joked] it will give someone else a chance to win,’ Spencer said. “She said ‘I’ll win it again in 2018’.”

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The mood of the crowd at Augusta National when Sergio Garcia broke through to take the 81st Masters, snapping his 0-for-73 winless streak, was particularly celebratory. Fans found it necessary to show their appreciation to the 37-year-old Spaniard for all that he had been through in trying to claim that elusive first major.

The same can be said for friends and fan watching from afar, at least judging by the stream of congratulatory messages toward Garcia on social media.
