Japan’s Ayaka Furue came into the 2022 LPGA season with some lofty expectations. The 22-year-old had won seven times previously on the pro circuit in her home country and finished seventh in LPGA Q Series to earn qualify for her rookie season in the US. While finishing second at the Bank of Hope LPGA Match Play, and making 13 cuts in 14 stroke-play starts, her best showing to date, however, was only a T-17.

That changed on Sunday when Furue shot a blistering 10-under 62 at the Dundonald Links. It pushed her past Lydia Ko and Celine Boutier to claim the title at the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open. With the victory, Furue won the first-place prize money payout of $300,000 from an overall purse of $2 million. That almost doubled her season/career earnings ($377,285).

Furue joins Atthaya Thitikul as the only other rookie to win on tour in 2022 and the fifth first-time winner, joining Jennifer Kupcho, Nana Koerstz Madsen and Leona Maguire.

Ladies European Tour: Japan’s Furue storms to maiden title with Dundonald Links course record

Japan’s Ayaka Furue stunned the leaders and stormed to a maiden LPGA and Ladies European Tour victory with a course record 62 at the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open.

The 22-year-old began the day in a tie for ninth place, five shots behind the leading duo of Celine Boutier and Lydia Ko, but quickly powered her way through the field.

Furue kicked into top gear rolling in six birdies in-a-row from holes six through to 11 to put herself in contention.

Another birdie on 15 put the seven-time JLPGA winner in front and back-to-back birdies on the last two holes sealed victory on 21-under-par in Furue’s first appearance at the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open.

“My shots and putting and all-around game were very good and when I needed to make big birdie putts, I was able to make them,” said the rookie, who had Glaswegian Michael Scott on her bag.

“With this win, it builds up a lot of confidence for me and I’m looking forward to having more big tournaments and playing at next week’s AIG Women’s Open.

“Mike is always a big help to me, and I am so happy that I was able to win in Scotland and near his hometown of Glasgow.”

France’s Boutier, who was the co-leader after 54 holes, finished in second place after producing a round of 69 on the final day.

The two-time Solheim Cup winner had seven birdies and four bogeys on her scorecard on the fourth day to have a total of 18-under-par at Dundonald Links.

“Starting the round, I knew I had to shoot a low score, even though I was tied for the lead,” said Boutier. “And on this course, you can score pretty low. I was trying to focus on my own game and not pay too much attention on the leaderboard. She just had a really great day, so there was nothing I could have done.

“Obviously, I’m a bit disappointed at the moment but I feel like my game has been very solid all week and I put myself in position. Playing the final round, in the final group, is not always easy to manage. I feel like hopefully I’m going to gain some experience from this and next time I’ll be lifting the trophy.”

With the final major of the year next week at Muirfield, Boutier is going to take the positives and what she has learned here into the AIG Women’s Open.

She added: “I feel pretty good. I feel like my irons, approach shots and short game have been very solid especially, so I’m just hoping to take that into next week and it is great preparation.

“I feel like that it was a little bit windy and there is a little bit of preparation for next week. That’s the main thing, I don’t think I could have expected a better week than how I played.”

Korea’s Hyo-Joo Kim and American Cheyenne Knight ended the tournament in a share of third place on 17-under-par after carding rounds of 66 and 65, respectively.

One shot further back in a tie for fifth place were American Alison Lee and New Zealand’s Ko, while Japan’s Nasa Hataoka finished in seventh place 15-under-par.

It was also announced that Dundonald Links will host the 2023 Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open co-sanctioned by the LPGA and LET in Ayrshire.

Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open: Celine Boutier and Lydia Ko fighting it out for glory at Dundonald

Celine Boutier and Lydia Ko are set for a final-day showdown as they share the lead on 15-under-par after 54 holes at the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open.

Two-time Solheim Cup winner Boutier fired a five-under round of 67 (-5) and got off to a hot start with four birdies on her front nine.

The Frenchwoman’s only dropped shot of the day came at 12, but she soon bounced back with a birdie on 14 to reach 15-under.

“It was a very solid day,” said Boutier. “I started the front pretty solid and that helped me relax a little bit. The conditions were more windy and a little bit tougher, so it was really good to get a good start and I stayed very patient. I had a lot of opportunities and took advantage of some of them.

“I really like links golf and playing in windy conditions. I feel like my ball flight is pretty low, and so I feel like I never really have trouble keeping it down, which is an advantage here because the ball doesn’t get affected as much. I have some good memories from Scotland too, of playing well in the past, so that’s always helpful

“I think what I’ve learned of being in this position in the past is that really anything can happen, whether you have the lead or not. Try to not get too far ahead of yourself and focus on what you can control which is really each shot at a time.”

World No. 4 Ko, who was the leader at the halfway stage, carded a round of one-under-par 71 on day three at Dundonald Links.

“I think I drove it a little better than I did the last couple days,” said Ko. “My irons were not as sharp, so I don’t think I set myself up for as many easier 15-feet and birdie opportunities.

“On some holes today, I felt like the hole was not apparent on the green, and it is difficult to read these greens. Even Thursday and Friday, I obviously played really well but there were some putts you thought you would have holed or would have at least touched the hole

“Today, sometimes I look stupid; I’ve got a 12-footer and I’ve missed the hole by like a ball, which you hope doesn’t happen often. It just shows it’s not easy out there. But I think more the most part, the weather was nice, so we got pretty fortunate with that.”

Germany’s Leonie Harm and Canada’s Maude-Aimee Leblanc sit in a tie for third place just one shot behind the leaders on 14-under-par.

“Today I had really good shots overall,” she said. “But more than my shots, my putter was very good, so I had a lot of chances. I just made birdies when I got the chance and I played well with a good attitude on the rest of my holes.

“I had a lot of birdies. I made some really good putts today, so I just believed in my green-reading and just hit it. That really worked and all the balls hit the middle of hole. That helped me to keep up my confidence.”

Three players are tied for second place just one shot back with France’s Celine Boutier, American Lilia Vu and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko all on seven-under.

It was a bogey-free day for Boutier, who rolled in four birdies on the front nine and three on the back nine and contended with the heavy mid-afternoon rainfall.

“It was a little bit of everything,” said the three-time LET winner. “It was calm all day, but then there was a part in the middle that was really kind of crazy and the wind started picking up, too. Then it was really calm at the end.

“I think my putting was really solid all day. I feel like even when I missed greens and stuff and I had maybe five- or six-footers for par, I would make them. It was really helpful to get my putting today.

“It’s my first time playing this course. I was kind of a little bit unsure what to expect. You just really have to go with the flow and it’s kind of nice because you just don’t have any expectations.”

Ko added: “Overall I thought I played pretty solidly, and I think when I did put myself out of position, I patiently and calmly approached how I needed to go about that hole. I’m happy with the way I started and hopefully I’ll be able to feed off the good momentum for the next few days.”

Two players sit in a share of fifth place with England’s Georgia Hall and South Korea’s Narin An both producing rounds of six-under 66.

And 2018 AIG Women’s Open champion Hall is enjoying being back at a course where she has played well in the past.

“I’m very happy with how I played today. Everything was pretty good, I didn’t really miss a shot and managed to hole some good putts. I’m really happy and enjoying playing links golf again,” said Hall, who won the 2022 Aramco Saudi Ladies International. “It’s proper links. There are really tough holes as well, when you get near the sea on the other side, and I find it fairly easy to visualise shots. There’s a lot of slopes on this course so I chip around and visualise and not just lob everything. You can chip around a lot.”

Seven players are in a tie for seventh place on five-under-par including Germany’s Leonie Harm, France’s Pauline Roussin and 2022 US Women’s Open champion Minjee Lee.

Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open: Michele Thomson guns for glory at home

Michele Thomson has had a consistently strong season so far in 2022 — now she is aiming for the winner’s circle at home in Scotland.

Three top-10 finishes alongside two additional top-15 finishes has put the Scot in a great position with the final part of the season to come.

And Thomson, who hails from Aberdeen, hopes that with her consistency she will soon be able to take home a trophy.

“I’m happy with how my season is going so far, I think I’ve had a pretty steady start and I’m just doing everything I can to get better,” she said. “Hopefully the results will continue, and a win is only around the corner.

“The strongest part of my game has been my iron play. I’ve struggled over the last few weeks on wedge play, so I’ve been dialling that in.”

With the LET having such a strong season with 34 events on the schedule, the Scot has played in 16 events and recently had some time off.

After finishing T12 at the Estrella Damm Ladies Open, Thomson put down her golf clubs and enjoyed herself in Barcelona before heading back home to prepare for her next stint on the road.

“I stayed on an extra few days for a nice holiday and some site seeing in Barcelona after my last event in Sitges,” she continued. “The season has been pretty hectic so far, so I deserved a little break with no clubs.

“I’ve had a really nice week at home catching up with my coach Spencer Henderson and physio Aimee Clark at Spear. It’s just nice to get things back on track and they have helped me do that before the next few weeks.

“I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing links golf courses in Aberdeen, so I’ve played Murcar Links and Royal Aberdeen to prepare for the next few weeks ahead.”

Thomson is one of six Scots who will tee it up at Dundonald Links from July 28 for the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open and it is a welcome return to links golf.

She added: “I always love playing in Scotland, it’s really nice playing in front of family and friends and you always feel like the crowd are right behind you. I love links golf and using my imagination to play different shots.

“It’s been a while since I’ve played Dundonald but I’m excited to see how they are going to set the course up. I’m expecting the weather conditions to be quite tough and a challenge for us all.”

Fellow Scot Louise Duncan last week announced that she will make her professional debut at this week’s tournament after receiving a sponsor invitation.

Duncan, a Stirling University graduate, transitions into professional golf after a stellar amateur career winning the 2021 Women’s Amateur Championship, the R&A Student Tour series in Portugal, and the Smyth Salvar award last year after finishing T10 at the Women’s Open in Carnoustie.

Growing up just 15 miles away from Dundonald, Duncan benefits from extensive experience in links golf and is one of the six Scots in the field that will be in the running for the Jock MacVicar Leading Scot award.

“I have been thinking about making the transition into professional for quite some time now and it just feels so right to be making my professional debut at my home open and also at a club which is just down the road from where I grew up learning to playing golf,” she said.

World’s best ready to fight it out for 2022 Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open

The cream of women’s golf will descend on Dundonald Links this week for the 2022 Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open, with the 144-woman field featuring eight of the world’s top 10 — along with 22 major winners — ready to battle it out at the $2 million event.

In the strongest line up to date, 30 countries are represented in the field, 45 LPGA winners with a haul of 194 titles and 28 Solheim Cup players with 74 appearances between them, and three past champions as Ryann O’Toole returns to Scotland to defend her first LPGA title.

The aforementioned 22 major winners boast a total of 39 major championships, including Brooke Henderson, who won the Amundi Evian Championship in France last week.

Joining Henderson at Dundonald Links is 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship winner Brooke Henderson, three-time major winner Anna Nordqvist, world no.8 and winner of the 2014 Evian Championship Hyo Joo Kim, Hannah Green, winner of the 2019 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, and winner of the 2021 Chevron Championship Patty Tavatanakit.

There are 22 Brits in the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open field and among the home hopes are major champion Georgia Hall and Solheim Cup star Charley Hull.

“I am really looking forward to playing,” said Hall. The next month is going to be a very busy time on the schedule, but I can’t wait to kick off the two Scottish events at Dundonald Links (the AIG Women’s Open is at Muirfield next week). I love the challenges of links golf, and last time we played here in 2017 I finished in the top-10 so I am excited to see how the club and course has changed over the last few years”.

After a two-year Covid inflicted hiatus, fans will be welcomed back to the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open for the first time since 2019. As well as being able to watch the best of women’s golf take on the challenges of Dundonald Links, there will be plenty of activities for all the family in the Fan Zone, from trying out new Golf technology and sport challenges to enjoying live music and local flavours.

Scotland’s Louise Duncan to turn pro ahead of 2022 Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open

Louise Duncan has announced that she is set to make her professional debut at next week’s Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open, taking place at Dundonald Links, just days after turning pro. Duncan is one of two recipients of VisitScotland’s sponsor invitation along with Aberdeen native Hannah McCook.

Duncan, a Stirling University graduate, moves into professional golf after a stellar amateur career, winning the 2021 Women’s Amateur Championship, the R&A Student Tour series in Portugal, and the Smyth Salvar award last year following a T-10 at the Women’s Open in Carnoustie. Growing up just 15 miles away from this year’s championship venue Dundonald Links, Duncan benefits from extensive experience in links golf and is one of the six Scots in the field that will be in the running for the Jock MacVicar Leading Scot award.

“I am honoured to have been chosen as one of VisitScotland’s Invitations for this year’s Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open,” the 22-year-old said. “I have been thinking about making the transition into professional for quite some time now and it just feels so right to be making my professional debut at my home open and also at a club which is just down the road from where I grew up learning to playing golf. I am so excited to make my first professional appearance in such a strong competitive field and at an amazing venue like Dundonald Links”.

McCook, also a University of Stirling graduate and was the captain of the Ladies Golf Team winning both the British University Championship and the Scottish University Championship. In 2018 she reached the final stage of the Ladies European Tour qualifying school and shortly after made the decision to turn professional.

Duncan and McCook will be joining their fellow Scots Gemma Dryburgh, Michele Thomson, Kelsey MacDonald and Kylie Henry in the 144-player field competing for $2 million, which includes eight out of the world top 10, 21 major champions and 27 Solheim Cup stars.

Dubai’s Chiara Noja flying high once again in Scotland at Trust Golf Links Series

Dubai youngster Chiara Noja is in prime position to consolidate her position at the top of the Ladies European Tour Access Series Order of Merit after firing a four-under 68 to join fellow German Patricia Isabel Schmidt at the top of the leaderboard after the opening day of the Trust Golf Links Series – The Musselburgh Golf Club.

The two Germans are one shot clear of the chasing pack heading into round two.

Schmidt set the early pace on the front nine as she carded a birdie on the par-five fourth and holed out for eagle on the par-four fifth hole to make the turn in 33 shots.

“I hit a good drive on the fifth and pitched it in from 70 meters. Sometimes I struggle with the opening rounds so that eagle got me well set for the rest of the round,” said the co-leader who was in the same position a fortnight ago.

“My takeaway from that tournament in France is to just continue playing like I did today and to not be shy hitting driver even if someone else does not.

“Driver is the best club in my bag, I hit it a lot today and it worked well,” added the 26-year-old.

The eighth player on the LETAS Order of Merit made three more birdies on the back nine and dropped two shots before matching the round of the day.

Her compatriot Chiara Noja was the first one to set the clubhouse lead at four-under-par as she only had one bogey on her scorecard on the ninth hole.

Taking the chances on the par fives second and seventh saw the Dubai-based teenager making the turn in 35 strokes before dropping three more birdie putts on the back nine.

“It was very steady today. Nothing felt incredibly awesome or bad, so it was just plodding along, trying to take the opportunities, and avoid mistakes,” commented the 16-year-old.

“I played solid off the tee trying to put myself into a good position each time. I hit the green in two on all par fives so I’m happy I took the opportunities there.”

The LETAS Order of Merit leader has put herself in contention once again after securing her maiden professional title and finishing runner-up twice this season.

“I’m happy with today’s round heading into tomorrow. We are going to try and keep the top position until the last round is over.”

English duo Gemma Clews and Amy Taylor tie the third place at three-under 69 while Czechia’s Sara Kouskova is another shot back after round one in Scotland.

At one-under-par 71 are Thailand’s Arpichaya Yubol, Scotland’s Kirsty Mitchell, and Italy’s Clara Manzalini as the three share the sixth spot.

Wales’ Lea Anne Bramwell and Dutch Lizzy Peeters round out the top 10 at level-par.

Noja leads the LETAS Order of Merit on 1,494.25 points, ahead of New Zealand’s Momoka Kobori (1,332.75 points), Dutch amateur Lauren Holmey (822.50 points), England’s Gemma Clews (821.75 points), Sweden’s Anna Magnusson (790.88 points), and Australia’s Kristalle Blum (781.75). These players are now all within reach of the elite six places that will secure a full LET card for the 2023 season.

With the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open fast approaching, the home guard has been unveiled as a quartet of players will be aiming to keep the trophy in the ‘Home of Golf’ — Scotland.

Ahead of the prestigious tournament at Dundonald Links, July 28-31, home hopes Gemma Dryburgh, Kelsey MacDonald, Michele Thomson, and Kylie Henry have confirmed their participation on one of Scotland’s leading links courses on the breezy west coast.

The Scottish quartet will join an all-star cast which consists of eight out of the world’s top 10 players as well as 19 major winners with 36 major trophies between them including the first three major champions of the year — Jennifer Kupcho, Minjee Lee and In Gee Chun.

Aberdonian Gemma Dryburgh is enjoying a fine run of form this season after finishing fifth at the LPGA Match Play and winning the US Women’s Open qualifier to make her debut in the second major of the year.

“Every year I look forward to playing in the Women’s Scottish Open, this will be my sixth appearance in the event and last year I was lucky enough to receive an invitation from tournament sponsor VisitScotland so I’m really happy to have qualified myself this year,” she said. “I am especially excited to experience all that the newly transformed Dundonald Links has to offer. It’s been a great start to the year and I’m very happy with how my game has been recently, so I just want to keep building on my last few performances and hopefully be in the running come Sunday afternoon”.

MacDonald, a perennial performer at the Women’s Scottish Open, has recorded 12 appearances since her debut in 2008 and made the cut on seven occasions. Last year she finished T-15, her best finish to date, to become the first winner of the Jock MacVicar Leading Scot award. The 2021 season saw MacDonald record two top-10 finishes and four further top-15 finishes to end the year ranked 39th in the Race to Costa Del Sol.

Thomson, who carded an opening round 64 at last year’s Scottish Open to set the course record, will make her fifth appearance at Dundonald Links this summer. With five top-20 finishes this season, Thomson is enjoying a stellar season so far and currently sits at 19th in the LET Order of Merit.

Glasgow native Kylie thought she might have to give up competitive golf last year after sustaining an elbow fracture, but after just her third start since the injury, she put in a fantastic performance at the Aramco Team Series in Bangkok to secure a third-place finish in the individual competition and sixth place in the team competition.

Tournament title sponsor, Trust Golf, has increased this year’s prize-fund by 33 per cent to $2million. The Thai based technology enterprise took over as title sponsor in 2021.
