By Keely Levins

For months now, USGA officials have talked about trying to separate the politics of President Donald Trump from the playing of the U.S. Women’s Open at a Donald Trump golf course. But with the biggest championship in women’s golf set to get underway Thursday at Trump National Bedminster, that task remained an almost impossible one, particularly with the potential for the president to be in attendance at some point this week seeming likely.

During pre-tournament interviews on Tuesday, players naturally were asked if they had any thoughts about playing the Open at a Trump course, along with whether the President should attend the event and if they felt the atmosphere was different from previous Opens because of the Trump factor. While the specific questions differed to each player, their answers were almost universally the same. Indeed, the players have thus far presented a seemingly united front in responding with a version of “I’m here to play golf.”

See for yourself:

“I have my opinion, and everybody is free to have their own opinion, but for me I think I’m just going to have a great week here, enjoy it and I’m excited to play the U.S. Women’s Open and not think of it in a political way for me.” — Lydia Ko

“I take my role as a female role model very seriously. This week is about the golf. The U.S. Open is our National Championship. It is one of my favorite weeks of the year. So this week, you know, I really want to focus on the golf part, and I want to hopefully inspire a lot of young women and women in general hopefully with my game. … I will not comment on any political part this week. This week is about the golf for me. I’m excited to compete in this championship and it’s really purely about the golf.” — Michelle Wie

“First of all, I’m not American so I don’t really know about political stuff, and I’m a professional golfer. I’m more thinking about how I’m going to play well at my stage instead of who is on the stage. We are here to play golf, not here to talk about the politics, so I don’t have any better answer about it.” — So Yeon Ryu

“[When] I teed off yesterday and teed off today, mostly what I was thinking about as a golfer was that this golf course is very difficult. I don’t know, I’m just looking at where to hit it in the fairway and what greens to hit. I haven’t thought much about it.” — Danielle Kang

“I think everybody just trying to avoid political questions because I don’t think they will get any advantage from saying whether they agree or disagree. And I mean I don’t really think that [I] really have much to say because I think it is really up to him whether [Trump] wants to come or not. I don’t think we get the choice of saying yes or no. So, we just deal with whatever we have, and I think that’s pretty much what we can do and this is a great national championship.” — Inbee Park

Lydia Ko admits to taking up a new hobby in the run-up to the U.S. Women’s Open at Trump National Golf Club—playing with Legos.

“I build Lego houses,” Ko said. “It took my mind off of golf.”

The 20-year-old has had a complicated year, so perhaps you can’t blame her for needing a simple distraction. Yes, the 14-time LPGA Tour winner knows the box says the toys are recommended for kids age 6-12. But by gravitating to a modest activity off the course, she hopes to re-new her focus on it.

Ko’s eventful 2017 season began just prior to the start of the calendar year, when she parted ways with her swing coach, David Leadbetter, and started working will Gary Gilchrist. Not long after, she changed equipment companies, from Callaway to PXG. In March, Ko missed her first cut in 40 starts at the Kia Classic. In April, she started working with her 10th caddie since turning pro. Finally, early last month, she dropped from No. 1 spot on the Rolex Rankings after 85 weeks on top.

Winless in 13 LPGA starts this season, Ko now ranks No. 4 after her most recent event, a disappointing T-59 finish two weeks ago at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Ko was in contention early—shooting four under after two rounds—but fell down the leader board on Saturday at Olympia Fields when she made nine bogeys en route to a 76. During the final round, she bogeyed five of the last 11 holes to finish five over for the week.

Ko skipped last week’s Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic to regroup and celebrate the fourth of July with friends, before moving on to Open prep.

“I just took the first few days to relax and not think about it,” said Ko, who has played in five Women’s Opens and never missed a cut, her best finish being a T-3 last year at CordeValle. “It was good to take those couple of days off to refresh and then get energized for this stretch of events.”

Her main focus on the course leading up to this week has been putting. Ko current ranks seventh overall on tour in putting average, though her final two rounds at the KPMG certainly didn’t reflect that.

“Speed control is an aspect of my putting where I feel like I can get better at,” Ko said before a Tuesday practice round. “Even yesterday we did a lot of speed drills and [worked on] just getting confident.”

At a course like Trump National Bedminster, the greens are wide, but Ko isn’t taking that for granted.

“The greens will be the biggest part of this golf course,” Ko said. “Just because you’re on the green, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be an easy two-putt or a birdie.”

It looks like President Trump will attend this week’s U.S. Women’s Open. A report in the Palm Beach Post highlights a new notice to pilots posted by the Federal Aviation Administration that lists travel plans to Bedminster-Morristown, N.J. for Friday, July 14 to Sunday, July 16.

The U.S. Women’s Open is being held at Trump National Golf Club (Bedminster) for the first time. It’s not surprising that Trump would want to be on hand for one of his prized course’s first crack at hosting a major championship. The course is also slated to be the site of the 2022 PGA Championship.

Although the FAA notice doesn’t mention the President specifically, the Palm Beach Post notes it’s similar to previous notices regarding his travel. These types of alerts are sent out to notify pilots that air flight may be restricted in those areas, and can be altered or cancelled.

Trump Bedminster has also been in the news a couple times recently for things other than the U.S. Women’s Open. The President has used it as a site for weekend meetings, and there was a video of the President driving a golf cart on one of its greens that went viral.

In May, Trump was expected to attend the final round of the Senior PGA Championship at his Trump National D.C. course, but changed his plans at the last minute.

“We were notified of the TFR (temporary flight restrictions) this morning but unfortunately we have no knowledge of the president’s schedule,” USGA spokesperson Janeen Driscoll told the Palm Beach Post.

“We have a security plan in place, as we do for all of our championships,” Driscoll added. “Our focus remains on conducting the ultimate test of golf for the best female players in the world.”

Last week, Brittany Lincicome told the Chicago Tribune she wished the President wouldn’t make an appearance during the tournament.

“Hopefully maybe he doesn’t show up and it won’t be a big debacle and it will be about us and not him,” Lincicome said. “I don’t know him. I have met him probably once. I think it will be fine. We’re going to play an amazing golf course and let our clubs do the talking.”

The USGA also hopes the focus is on golf and not politics during the tournament. President Trump being on hand, though, might make that a little trickier.
