Bragging rights go to Emirates Golf Club, in the opening event of the ladies only league, who came out on top by just a single point after scoring 252 points with the best eight out of 10 scores counting to the teams overall score on the day.

Taking the individual prize was Emirate’s Golf Club’s Wonjeong Lee while the team of Donna Downes, Maria Dunkel & Deirdre Black won the best group of the day.

The second round of the Ladies Inter Club Challenge takes place on 31st January at Emirates Golf Club.

Pirvu and Ayres win EGC Ladies UAE Race to Obidos International Pairs Qualifier

Emirates Golf Club Ladies’ Section hosted the latest UAE International Pairs Qualifier over the Majlis Course, with 60 ladies competing. The duo of Anca Pirvu and Annabel Ayres took top spot with 45 stableford points. They had a combined total of 11 net birdies. Runners-up were Josie Tracey and Wonjeong Lee on 43, ahead of Sonal Gandhi and Avani Shahon 41.
The top three Pairs at each qualifier progress to the UAE National Finals at Abu Dhabi Golf Club which will be held over the National Course next March.
The winning pair then goes on to represent the UAE at the World Final of the International Pairs — Race to Obidos event next November at Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort and Bom Sucsso Resort in Portugal.

US secure Eisenhower Trophy in Abu Dhabi
The US surged to their 16th Eisenhower Trophy win, and their first since 2014, on Saturday in the 33rd World Amateur Team Championship at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. David Ford, the No. 5 ranked amateur in the world, posted an eight-under 64, while 2023 US Amateur champion Nick Dunlap contributed a four-under 68. “I just feel so happy for these guys,” said US captain Mark Newell. “This is a great championship filled with lots of good players and they really earned their victory with great play all four rounds and especially today.”

The Orient Travel monthly medal kicked off the new season in style on Saturday at Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club. Samiuddin Siddique topped the leaderboard at the end of the day’s play with a very impressive three-under 69. Past SGSC Club Captain Rory Thomson was runner-up on two-under.
Also taking place at SGSC was the summer-ending Air Arabia Matchplay awards. Sami Butt was the 2023 singles champion, ahead of George Liu. The net singles crown went to Aamir Inam.

Richard Charlesworth set off on his mission at Trump International Golf Club Dubai at the crack of dawn back in 2020, and exhausted but unbowed, he holed out on No. 72 just after 4pm in memory of his father, who died of cancer in 2017.

Now, the 52-year-old did it all over again on Wednesday as he continues to raise awareness of the illness, while also helping UK-based Macmillan Cancer Support.

Originally from Chester, England, Charlesworth has lived in the UAE for 13 years and has now managed to complete 144 holes in two days — three years apart.

“I did the challenge in 2020 in memory of my dad,” he told Golf Digest Middle East. “I had known about the Macmillan Longest Day Challenge for some time, but it was a different test doing it in the UAE compared to the UK as it is buggy golf here (somewhat easier) but in 45 degrees (somewhat more challenging).

“Of course people only really play early morning and late afternoon/evenings in the summer here. Three years ago we started first thing and just kept going. I did first round with friends and then final three rounds on my own.”

Charlesworth was preparing to go again in 2021 but he had to put the plans on hold as he suffered a series of injuries that Tiger Woods could relate to.

“I had intended to do it annually but the following year I had to give up golf for a few months with plantar fasciitis type symptoms where I sometimes struggled to walk 100 yards,” he said. “Last year I was still recovering from a foot surgery to remove bone spurs and repair damaged cartilage to one of my big toes. Since then I’ve had golfer’s elbow and six weeks ago a had a minor tear to my knee meniscus, thankfully not bad enough to stop golf. So from the intended date in 2021 here I was in 2023 hoping and praying my body would hold up!

Thankfully, it did.

“I booked the first tee time for 6am — we started on the 10th tee this time around — and I competed the first two rounds with two friends,” he added. “I got off the course at 4.30pm as the second two rounds were much quicker playing on my own.”

The 7.2-handicap Trump member was delighted that he managed to keep his game so consistent throughout the day as the mercury crept higher. “I shot 80, 83, 81 and 81 so it was remarkably consistent!” he laughed. “I was swinging easy from the off and I was surprised that I felt OK at the end and hadn’t stiffened up as much as I did three years ago.”

Charlesworth did everything possible to keep himself fresh and hydrated as the day wore on. “As before I brought four complete sets of spare clothes to change into, sports drinks, electrolyte tablets, sun cream, towels — even some Vaseline,” he explained. “Thankfully there are water coolers are every few holes and there’s a food/ beverage cart on course to keep my energy levels up. As before I will make a donation to Macmillan and continue my push to raise awareness through radio and social media.”

Here’s hoping Richard doesn’t have to wait three more years to do it all over again — if he is up for it…

After Round 4, our Net Order Of Merit is led by Anish Bhatia with 245 points and the Gross OOM is led by Miki Mirza with 270 points.

As darkness descended onto the 18th green, a two putt from 60 foot by Emma secured the 1 up victory in the better ball format. Lyndon Richards was crowned the Men’s Matchplay Champion for 2022/23 after a 3&1 victory in the final over previous champion John White.

Third place went to JGE Lady Captain Evelyn Downham (18) and Sarah Blomfield (20).

Chalk it up as a tough but invaluable learning experience even if you know Josh Hill would have taken it a little more personally than that in the moment.

The 17-year-old Trump Dubai member’s Jacques Léglise Trophy debut ended in galling fashion on Saturday, a 1down loss to Frenchman Oihan Guillamoundeguy proving the title-clinching point for Team Europe in the annual U-18 international matches.

Europe eventually waltzed away to a 16½-8½ victory at Falsterbo Golf Club in Sweden, an emphatic defence of the title after leading by a single point after the first day. While you win as a team and lose as one as well, the ever-competitive Hill won’t be happy to have played in the match which proved a point of no return for Great Britain & Ireland. That instinct is what makes Hill one of the players of his generation.

There was minor consolation earlier on Saturday when the MENA Tour winner combined with England teammate Jack Bigham for a half against Tiger Christensen and Yannick Malik. That followed a 2&1 loss to the same European duo in Friday morning’s foursomes.

But with Englishman Harley Smith and Scot Cameron Adam the only GB&I players to win their final afternoon singles matches (Irishman Joshua Hill secured a half), it was Europe’s day.

The win followed Europe’s 15½-9½ victory at Aldeburgh Golf Club in 2019 (the 2020 matches was postponed due to COVID-19) and narrows the overall Jacques Léglise Trophy ledger 29-14 in GB&I favour with one match halved.

Hill now returns to the UK to prepare for his senior international debut, having been selected in an 11-man team for England’s defence of the open Home Internationals title at Hankley Common Golf Club in Surrey from September 15-17.

Iceland’s Sigurbrandsson Dagbjartur stands between Josh Hill and a place in the last 32 at the 126th Amateur Championship in Scotland.

The combatants meet in the first round of matchplay at The Nairn Golf Club at 12.36pm (3.36pm UAE time) on Wednesday after Trump Dubai member Hill advanced from the strokeplay phase of the R&A-administered British amateur by two strokes on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old England Boys’ International and MENA Tour winner backed up his opening 73 on Monday with another 73 yesterday to finish on +4, 146, good enough for a share of 40th place. The top 64 players progressed to the matchplay knockout which culminates in Saturdays 36-hole final.

Dagbjartur complied rounds of 73-69 to finish T-11 on even par but will find Hill a tough matchplay foe. Hill reached the third round of last year’s Amateur Championship at Royal Birkdale and was ousted, 1 down, by eventual winner Joe Long.

Scotsman Matthew Clark won 2021 strokeplay medallist honours on -8, courtesy of a course record second round 62. England’s Jack Dyer was second qualifier on -7 and is on Hill’s side of the draw.

They say you learn more from failure than success in golf but that was lukewarm comfort at best for Josh Hill as fell agonisingly short of glory on the Old Course.

The 17-year-old Trump Dubai member missed out on a playoff for the prestigious St Andrews Links Trophy title on Sunday by a solitary stroke. Englishman Jack Cope eventually claimed the crown with a -8, 280 aggregate after edging countryman Robin Williams and Scot George Burns in sudden-death.

Hill was one of six players to finish in a share of fourth place on 281. The MENA Tour winner had started the final 36-holes at the Home of Golf just a stroke back but made hard work for himself with a two-over-par 74 in the third round. He fought back gamely with a closing 69 but will now have to wait until the 126th Amateur Championship, starting at Nairn Golf Club on June 14, for his next chance to avenge the disappointment.

Writing on social media, Hill’s father relayed his son’s bittersweet feelings after a week that will at least see Hill Jnr’s World Amateur Golf Ranking improve from 313th place.

“He fell one short and is feeling happy but so annoyed as he feels “I left so many shots out there”,” Hill wrote on Instagram.

“It’s all lessons and when he is so used to leaving shots out there in the UAE and 95% of the time winning, you don’t learn the tough lessons. He has the opportunity to learn the tough lesson now.

“Anyway, I am super proud as he had a bit of a mare in the morning falling to 4 off the lead but still had it in him to come back and challenge for the title! Also mighty impressed that he is doing it caddieless! Super proud to be part of this journey!”

Cope, the reigning English Amateur Champion, started the final day five shots behind overnight leader Charlie Thornton but scored home with rounds of 70-67.

He eventually prevailed at the fourth extra hole after Cope and Williams both birdied the 1st to eliminate the Scotsman Burns. Cope and Williams then halved both the 18th and 1st before Cope won with a birdie, impressively driving the green on the most famous closing hole in golf for the second time in overtime.

“I was committed to every shot I hit out there over those four holes. I probably played the best I played all week tee to green. I guess that was a nice time to really peak,” Cope said.

“I love the home of golf. I particularly like the Old Course, mainly because I normally score alright round there which helps. Just walking over that bridge, taking photos, thinking about all the players who have won here and played here. This is very special to me.”
