DJ Flanders. Supplied

DJ Flanders has officially taken over from Mark Chapleski as Troon International’s executive vice-president, it was announced on Tuesday.

Troon, the leader in providing golf and club-related leisure and hospitality services, made the move after Chapleski retired from the company in July. Flanders moves from his position as senior vice-president and will now oversee the company’s international portfolio of 40-plus facilities in 20 countries.

“DJ was the natural successor to help steer our Troon International division. He is an outstanding leader, caring and detailed oriented. His passion for not only the game of golf, but for Troon, is unmatched and we are very lucky to have him,” said Troon COO Bruce Glasco. “We are extremely excited for this next chapter of Troon International. With DJ at the helm, we have no doubt our growth, but more importantly our continued delivery of excellence in our services to our clients, will continue and thrive.”

Flanders, a member of the PGA of America, joined Troon in 1999 and has more than 24 years of experience in the golf industry. During his tenure with Troon, he has successfully managed properties around the world including in the United States, Japan, UAE and Bahrain. His commitment to excellence has been recognised on multiple occasions, including Troon’s Facility of the Year (2000, 2013); Troon’s Most Improved Facility (2001, 2010), Troon’s Turnaround Facility of the Year (2007), Troon’s Ambassador Award (2006) and Troon’s General Manager of the Year (2007). Flanders was also recognised by Golf Inc Magazine as one of the ‘Top 20 Most Admired Operators in Golf’ in 2008.

Flanders joined the Troon International corporate office as Director of Operations in February 2014, responsible for overseeing Troon’s operations at some of the top golf courses outside the Americas. Additional responsibilities came in overseeing marketing programs, pre-opening activities, supporting the business development of the Troon brand, as well as recruitment and training for Troon facilities, their property leaders and associates.

Since 2019, Flanders has been serving as the Senior Vice President for Troon International. Over this time, he has led Troon’s expansion in numerous countries, including Solheim Cup host venue Finca Cortesin in Spain; relaunched the previously named Muscat Hills as LA VIE Club in Oman; and Vattanac Golf Resort in Cambodia, whose success has been noted with multiple accolades. Flanders is also a passionate board member of Troon’s DE&I Council, working to make the game of golf more inclusive and accessible for all communities.

Commenting on his new role, and his vision for Troon International, Flanders said, “I am humbled to be extended the opportunity to oversee Troon’s International division and follow in the footsteps of Mark Chapleski, who led the International division for six years. Mark did an exceptional job of growing the International division and I am confident that our International team will continue to build on these efforts. It is amazing to think that 24 years ago I joined Troon as an assistant professional in Texas and to see where I am today professionally. Troon’s founder Dana Garmany always said he wanted joining Troon to be a career and not a job. He sure was right.”

Yas Acres Golf & Country Club is now in full swing, following its inauguration in December and is a fine addition to the UAE’s ever-expanding portfolio of courses.

For the budding golfers in Abu Dhabi and further afield looking for a new challenge, the Fry/Straka-designed nine-hole course offers something for all skill levels, day or night thanks to its fully floodlit set-up.

The par-36 course stretches from 2,554 yards at its shortest to a challenging 3,700 yards, from five different tee areas at each hole, overlooking impressive scenery in the heart of the Yas Acres community, with generous fairways, sizeable greens and plenty of water to keep you on your toes.

Visitors can also refuel at the clubhouse restaurants, work on their swing at the largest driving range in Abu Dhabi, alongside chipping and putting areas, hit the gym, play some padel tennis or relax at the pool.

By Kent Gray
Amateurs lucky enough to call the UAE home and international visitors in the know have been smitten for years. Now the rest of the golf world will be let in on the joys of Yas Links Abu Dhabi. Of all the 2022 Desert Swing events, the switch of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship from Abu Dhabi Golf Club after 16 editions is easily the most mouth-watering prospect. Kyle Phillips’s desert-links gem, ranked 48th in Golf Digest’s global Top 100 courses, has returned to its former glory after a challenging two-year dip in conditioning due to water challenges. Here’s hoping the famous Arabian Gulf breezes waft in over the mangroves to give Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy and co. a taste of the challenge presented by the undulating layout, particularly so on the stunningly difficult three-hole closing stretch which has been the scene of many amateur hour meltdowns.

By Joel Beall
Royal Troon has been selected to host the 2023 Open Championship.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by the R&A. It will be the 10th time Troon has been an Open venue, and 100 years since the claret jug first visited the famed links.

“We are very much looking forward to celebrating another milestone in the cherished history of the Open when we mark the 100th anniversary of the Championship first being played at Royal Troon,” Martin Slumbers, chief executive of the R&A, said in a statement.

Although the centennial celebration made Troon a logical pick, it’s noteworthy that Turnberry and Muirfield were bypassed once again. The Open hasn’t been to Turnberry since 2009, whereas Troon hosted the event in 2016. Due to President Donald Trump’s ownership of the property, a tournament at Turnberry could become a politically charged event, a situation the R&A would like to avoid until his presidency is complete.

“Turnberry is a fantastic golf course and will be a great venue when we get there,” Slumbers said last year “It would be very complex having an Open at Turnberry at the moment. You’ve got the ownership issue of the course and the staging there. But there are a number of other courses we haven’t been to for a few years, and we are looking forward to going back to all of them.”

As for Muirfield, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers were briefly removed from the Open rota after it failed to permit women into the club. However the club amended its vote, and last year invited its first 12 female members in its 275 years of existence. Muirfield has hosted the Open 16 times, the most behind only St. Andrews and Prestwick, its last tournament coming in 2013.

Golf Saudi has called in the heavyweights to help lay the foundations for its ambitious development plan for the game across the Kingdom.

Troon, the world’s largest golf management company, has signed a memorandum of understanding deal Saudi Arabia’s governing body to provide strategic insights in areas such as infrastructure development, agronomy, operational planning and financial best practice.

Golf Saudi calls the partnership a statement of intent for its vision, unveiled at the country’s inaugural European Tour stop, the Saudi International powered by SBIA, which was won by Dustin Johnson in February. For their part, Troon has promised to “re-set the dial” and “help create one of the fastest-growing new golf markets in the world.”

Central to the partnership will be the support Troon provides Golf Saudi in the development of its five core pillars, encompassing Access & Infrastructure, Mass Participation, National Team & Elite Development, Events and Tourism.

“Troon will provide us with valuable insights to help set a new benchmark for golf development through our national golf strategy,” said Majed Al-Sorour, CEO, Saudi Golf Federation.

“Their blend of regional expertise, allied with a truly global presence, will allow us to effectively evaluate the implementation of our programme. We look forward to working with them and to growing a vibrant and healthy ecosystem for golf in Saudi Arabia.”

With over 30 years’ experience, Troon provides services to more than 465 locations and over 510 golf courses globally.

“We are proud to associate Troon with one of the world’s most progressive new golf markets,” said Troon Chief Operating Officer Bruce Glasco.

“Saudi Arabia is currently laying robust foundations for its golf programming and with buy-in from the government and local development stakeholders, it is well placed to deliver a truly innovative approach to bringing golf and sport to the Saudi people.

“This is therefore a great opportunity to reset the dial and introduce modern techniques that help create one of the fastest-growing new golf markets in the world.”

Henrik Stenson put forth one of the greatest performances in golf history at the 2016 Open Championship. Two years later, he’s just “hoping” to play in the sport’s oldest major.

On Monday, Stenson announced on Twitter his withdrawal from this week’s Scottish Open due to an elbow injury. But he hasn’t ruled out playing next week at Carnoustie.

Sad to have to withdraw from #ASIScottishOpen due to elbow problems. Good luck to everyone at Gullane & have great week. Hoping to be fit for Carnoustie.

Stenson is enjoying another solid season straddling the PGA Tour and European Tour. The World No. 17 finished T-6 at the U.S. Open in his previous start.

Prior to Monday’s injury news, only nine golfers had better odds to win the Open Championship than Stenson (25/1), according to Westgate Las Vegas Superbook. Dustin Johnson (12/1) is currently the favourite.

The Open Championship is returning to Carnoustie for the first time since 2007 when Padraig Harrington defeated Sergio Garcia in a four-hole playoff. Stenson missed the cut that year, one of just two times he’s failed to make it to the weekend at the Open. For his career in the event, Stenson has four top-three finishes, including his epic victory over Phil Mickelson at Troon.

Good enough to tee it up on the PGA Tour, the Troon executive is now a major player in the business of golf

After a successful collegiate career that included earning All-American honours in his junior year at Miami University, Mark Chapleski gave professional golf his best shot.

He bounced around the mini tours in the U.S. for a couple of years in the mid 1980s and very nearly got a foothold in the big time via several starts on the PGA Tour. But like so many talented youngsters, the penny dropped when the putts simply wouldn’t.

“I decided that playing golf for a living was not profitable when you can’t putt well,” Chapleski admits.

Fortunately a detour into the business of golf has paid off handsomely for the now 56-year-old, Dubai-based Michigan native.

Chapleski was recently promoted to the role of President of Troon International, meaning his responsibility for the global golf course management company’s Asia-Pacific and Middle East-Africa regions has been extended to encompass Europe. It’s reward for 25 years of industry leadership and innovation, the last 17 of them with Troon split between Japan and the Middle East.

“I’ve got to see parts of the world that I would just never, ever have imagined 20 years ago when I was a manager of a golf course in Hawaii,” said Chapleski who started as an assistant pro at Yuma Country Club in Arizona before opportunities at the exclusive Vintage Club in Palm Desert and at Ko Olina GC in Hawaii put him on Troon’s radar.

Chapleski now wants to ensure golfers everywhere know all about the network of clubs he oversees, essentially everywhere outside of Troon’s Americas portfolio.

In the Middle East, it business as usual although he admits golf is operating in a challenging environment locally.

“As Troon we’re trying to do some things to combat that [downturn], make it easier for tour operators to book multiple golf courses for example. We’re also coming out with an app that’s going to be like an Uber booking so all your data is in the system and you’re just going to be able to book directly. It’s more of a local tool, but international folks could eventually tap into that.”

Chapleski has hailed the formation of Falcon Golf to sell Dubai to the world through the “lens of golf” and sees useful collaboration prospects with Troon’s portfolio of seven UAE clubs and four more around the region, including clubs coming on stream soon in Jeddah and Kazakhstan.

“Falcon Golf is fantastic for the region because the money behind promoting Dubai as a golf destination seemed to go one way a while back. No matter how good you are, you’ve still got to be out there marketing the destination and the region because people have short memories. It’s front of sight, front of mind stuff. I think with that impetus, it is going to be a huge plus.”

Bunkers are considered an integral feature on any golf course, but on the beautiful island of Langkawi, an award-winning Ernie Els design has shown that in the right location, you can easily do without them. And that location is a dramatic Malaysian rainforest.

[divider] [/divider]

A trip to the Datai entails a short night flight to Kuala Lumpur followed by a 45-minute hop to Malaysia’s northerly island of Langkawi. It feels like it should be harder to reach than that. More remote; more spectacularly removed from the glinting metropolises of the UAE. From an urban jungle to the real McCoy, complete with inquisitive monkeys and prehistoric-looking bird life, this is a dramatic assault on the senses. And then of course, there’s the small matter of an award-winning golf course.

Ernie Els’ Teluk Datai course is carved out of a mature rainforest in the northwest corner of Malaysia’s Langkawi island

Bunkers? Who needs ‘em? Not the Els Club Teluk Datai, apparently. I have to confess, when I first heard that this renovated golf course had entirely foregone arguably the game’s most essential hazard, I was initially skeptical.

I expected to be wowed by the scenery and surroundings, but underwhelmed by a layout that must surely suffer aesthetically from this omission. On the world’s greatest golf courses, the bunkers are a work of art in themselves – from the traps at Royal County Down that look like someone took a giant ice cream scoop to the turf, to the famous walled pots at St Andrews that have names like ‘Hell Bunker’ and the flawless curves and crushed white marble eye-poppers of Augusta National. Unless your name is Luke Donald you never enjoy venturing into bunkers, but they sure are pleasing to the eye, not to mention a valuable distance gauge.

Well, after playing just three holes of the Els Club Teluk Datai with Troon’s resident golf operations manager, Steven Outlaw, I had already forgotten this supposed bone of contention. A course with no sand is certainly unique, but then nothing about this layout could even remotely be placed in a bracket marked ‘standard’. Located in the north-west corner of Langkawi, the terrain is rugged, mountainous and covered by a rainforest that is many centuries old. With the far reaches of the golf course running up the coast to meet the calm waters of the Andaman Sea, Thailand’s southernmost island, the uninhabited Ko Tarutao, looms with a pale sunlit halo just five kilometres across the Strait of Malacca. In short, it is a spectacular spot to play golf.

Carved through the rainforests that lie beneath the distinctive rocky peak of Mat Cincang (which serves as a useful alignment guide on several tee shots), the holes plunge through thick jungle and skirt the coastline on both the front and back nines. Originally over 20 years old, four-time major winner Els was tasked with the job of renovating and improving the course, which reopened for play just under two years ago.

The South African’s decision to make the new layout bunker-free was rooted in practicality. Although our visit fortunately coincided with one of Langkawi’s driest spells on record, when it rains here, they are the kind of deluges that would prompt Noah to gather supplies for a new Ark.

The distinctive peak of Mat Cincang serves as a useful alignment aid

Els was told that in this volatile climate, keeping the bunkers water-free was a logistical nightmare, so he decided instead to make the jungle the star of the show. And boy, does it deliver.

You would naturally assume that if you keep your ball out of the trees, the guarantee of always playing from the grass would make the game considerably easier. If that is true, it wasn’t reflected by our scorecard.

Many of the greens are protected by the kind of swales and run-offs that characterise the Els Club’s sister venue in Dubai, and the rough can be knarly and difficult to get a clean contact from. If you start spraying it off the tee you can really rack up a number, because the walls of jungle that flank many holes have a ‘don’t bother looking for your ball’ vibe to them. Even Bear Grylls would have to think twice before wading in to recover his Pro V1.

The holes themselves contain plenty of variety, with changes in elevation and a number of doglegs keeping you on your toes. A stirring finish is highlighted by two cracking par 3s, the dramatically downhill 15th protected by a large pond – one of the few water hazards on the golf course, and the 17th, which runs right alongside a shoreline coincidentally known as ‘pebble beach’.

There are no bunkers on the 18-hole course, with the rainforest acting as the layout’s chief protection on almost every hole

The Datai Langkawi’s beachside pool and restaurant

The Teluk Datai has more in common with California’s famous venue than you might think, having joined it for the first time in Golf Digest U.S.’s compilation of the 100 greatest courses on the planet (entering at an impressive No.83 earlier this year). There is an unmistakable resort-type feel to it that may offend the type of golf snob who shuns all bar the championship courses, but for fun-factor alone, the Els Club Teluk Datai is hard to beat. It’s also in extremely good condition, even if the greens aren’t quite as fast and pure as those that we’re used to in the UAE.

But just as crucial to the overall package on Langkawi is the Datai Hotel itself, which is easily among Malaysia’s finest. Nestled on an elevated perch in the densest part of the forest, you can choose from canopy or beach accommodation, take guided nature walks or relax in surely one of the best locations for a spa in Asia. The jungle is alive with a vivid array of bird and animal life, brought into even sharper focus when we joined a small huddle of nature lovers in the lobby for a guided walk led by Malaysia’s answer to David Attenborough.

Such was this gentleman’s enthusiasm and depth of knowledge for every single inhabitant of the natural world – plant and animal, that after an hour of rushing, gesticulating and insightful anecdotes, we had barely made it past the swimming pool. Everything from the resident eagles to snakes, predatory fig trees and the problems with Darwin’s Theory of Evolution were tackled over the course of a hugely educational, if extremely truncated walk.

If it’s an exhilarating escape from the real world and a golf course to match that you’re seeking, then this is a place you simply have to visit.

Ranked inside the World’s Top 100 Courses 2016 (no.83) by Golf Digest, we play the final four holes on this bunker-free Ernie Els designed layout situated on the north-western tip of the beautiful island of Langkawi, Malaysia. With the sparkling waters of the Andaman Sea framing the rugged topography and stunning rain forest, the Els Club Teluk Datai, managed by Troon, is undoubtedly one of the most arresting places in the world to play golf. In this skins game, we take on our colleague at Golf Digest Australia and Troon’s Steven Outlaw, golf ops manager at the club.
