At the age of 63 and two months, Germany’s Langer has eclipsed the mark of American Tommy Aaron, who was 63 and one month when he last made the cut at Augusta National in 2000.

“When you think of all the legends who have played this tournament – guys like Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and on and on – for me to be the oldest golfer to have made the cut means a lot,” said Langer after is second round yesterday.

Langer shot 68-73 in the first two rounds of the 2020 Masters, to sit at three-under par and in a share of 27th place. After Thursday’s weather delay, the second round will not be completed until Saturday morning, but with all golfers scoring level-par or better projected to make the halfway cut, Langer’s place in the final two rounds is assured.

“I saw Tommy Aaron at the Past Champions Dinner on Tuesday,” added Langer. “I told him that his record of making the cut at 63 is an impressive achievement but I warned him that I was coming after it. He laughed and wished me luck, and here we are. I have known Tommy for more than 30 years because of the Past Champions Dinner and because he kept on competing for many years. He is a gentleman of the game and he has always treated me very well. We have respect for each other.   

“You know, it is not easy to make the cut here. It is not an easy golf course, especially in recent years as it has become much longer, so it is hard for us 50 and 60-year-olds to make the cut. It is not surprising that Tommy’s record stood for so long.”

While Langer can look forward to two more rounds, big-hitting American Bryson DeChambeau has some ground to make up when he completes his second round on Saturday morning.

“Dustin Johnson might be the favourite at this point but it is hard to tell when you have a leaderboard that is so packed in,” suggests Langer. “Tiger Woods is still there but the one surprise to me is Bryson DeChambeau.

“DeChambeau won the U.S. Open when he just over-powered the golf course. Even when he drives into the rough he can just gauge the ball out of there with a wedge or a nine-iron and reach just about every par four, even if it’s 500 yards. He hits his drives something like 340 yards. It’s a different game.

“DeChambeau has taken driving distance to a whole new level and he says Augusta is a par 67 for him. The problem is that he still needs to hit it straight and make the putts and he hasn’t done that yet this week.”
