The Tiger Woods DUI saga isn’t over, but it took a big step towards being resolved on Wednesday. The Palm Beach Post reported a spokesman for the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office said Woods will enter a diversion program for first-time offenders.

This came after Woods’ lawyer, Douglas Duncan, entered a plea of not guilty to charges stemming from his client’s Memorial Day arrest. Woods did not appear in court.

According to the Palm Beach Post, participants in the program avoid a DUI conviction by serving a 12-month probation after pleading guilty to a reckless driving charge that can later be wiped off a person’s criminal record. Another hearing in Palm Beach Gardens, Flas., is set for October 25 at 8:30 a.m. at which the details of Woods’ situation should be finalised.

The first-time offenders program is relatively new in Florida.

“[Our program] has been a huge success since its inception in 2013,” State Attorney Dave Aronberg told CBS 12. “More than 2,100 defendants have entered the program, and very few have committed a DUI again.”

Woods was arrested in the early hours of Memorial Day after police found his black Mercedes pulled over and partially blocking the right lane of Military Trail at 2:03 a.m. Woods had no alcohol in his system, but he didn’t know where he was at first and he failed numerous field sobriety tests. He admitted to taking several medications and has since completed a program to help him deal with pain meds.

Woods has been seen in public several times recently. He attended an FC Barcelona game with his kids in Miami and posted a shirtless photo of him free diving for lobster in the Bahamas.

Three weeks after a Memorial Day DUI arrest, Tiger Woods revealed he’s “receiving professional help” to manage medications. Here’s Woods’ full statement, which was posted on his social media handles on Monday evening:

“I’m currently receiving professional help to manage my medications and the ways that I deal with back pain and a sleep disorder. I want to thank everyone for the amazing outpouring of support and understanding especially the fans and players on tour.”

ESPN obtained more information about Woods’ treatment via his agent, Mark Steinberg.

“I’m not at liberty to say where he is, but he is receiving in-patient treatment,” Steinberg told ESPN. “Tiger has been dealing with so much pain physically. And that leads to insomnia and sleep issues. This has been going on for a long time.”

Woods’ only previous statement since his arrest was an apology that day in which he stated that alcohol was not involved, but that he had an “unexpected reaction to prescribed medications.” Woods blew a .000 blood-alcohol level on two breathalyser tests, but the 14-time major winner told authorities he was taking four different types of medication, including Vicodin. Golf Channel later reported Woods also told police he was on Xanax.

Woods was arrested after being found by police asleep at the wheel of his black Mercedes, which was partially blocking the right lane and had the right blinker on. There was also some damage to the car, which was noted in photos that were later released. Woods failed multiple sobriety tests, was booked, and eventually released at 10:50 a.m. that day.

Last week, the Associated Press reported Woods’ July 5 arraignment on DUI charges was postponed until Aug. 9. No reason for the delay was given.

Woods underwent a fourth back surgery in late April and is expected to be sidelined through at least the end of this season.

So it shouldn’t be a surprise that his thoughts on this week’s Tiger Woods developments couldn’t be contained to a 140-character tweet. Instead, Kaymer made a heartfelt video addressing the 14-time major champ and more so, the reaction to his Memorial Day DUI arrest.

Kaymer’s main contention in the two-minute clip is that golf fans and media should show compassion for Woods in appreciation for all he’s done for the game of golf and beyond. At one point, he utters this particularly poignant line: “My wish would be to stop being so nasty. Try to help.” Watch the video here:

News of Tiger Woods’ DUI arrest on Memorial Day broke late Monday morning, but there’s been a steady stream of information to come from the Jupiter (Fla.) Police Department since. First, details about the arrest, then a full report on Tuesday and finally, photos of his damaged car and dashcam video on Wednesday evening.

RELATED: Photos of Tiger Woods’ car released

The Palm Beach Post’s Hannah Winston was one of the first to share parts of the dashcam footage that show a clearly impaired Woods following directions from cops. Woods was found asleep behind the wheel with his car blocking the right lane at around 2 a.m. Monday morning. He was booked at 7:18 a.m. and released at 10:50 a.m. That night, Woods issued an apology, but stated “alcohol was not involved.” Woods recorded a .000 blood-alcohol level, but told police he takes four medications, including Vicodin.

After receiving his first criminal charges, Woods faces a legal battle. A local first-time DUI offenders law could help him, but only if it’s determined that Woods wasn’t in a crash. Woods’ car was found with two flat tires on the driver’s side and minor damage to the rims and bumpers.

Here are some short clips of Woods going through some field sobriety tests, and at times, visibly struggling:

Among the prescribed medications Tiger Woods told police he is taking when he was arrested for DUI in the wee hours of Monday morning in Jupiter, Fla., is something called Soloxex.

What is it? Good question, because no one seems to know.

“That’s a bit of a mystery,” said Clifton Page, MD, primary care sports medicine physician at the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute. “I can’t find it anywhere. But given the derivative it would probably be a muscle relaxant combined with an anti-inflammatory.”

If it is indeed a muscle relaxant that Woods simply mispronounced the name of — something that wouldn’t be out of the question given his dazed-and-confused behavior during questioning and field sobriety tests — drowsiness and lethargy would be side effects, according to Page.

Vicodin, a powerful pain killer, is another prescription listed on the police report. Its side effects range from lightheadedness, dizziness, vomiting and blurred vision to more serious ones such as a slow heartbeat, confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior and convulsions.

“It can impair your functions and how you think,” Page said. “It slows reaction time. It slows how you process information and can cause you to misinterpret information.”

Typically, Page said, someone who undergoes back surgery would be prescribed Vicodin in dosages between 5 and 10 milligrams with the patient taking a dose every six hours. The prescription is typically for about two weeks before the patient would be weened off to a less potent painkiller. Woods underwent spinal fusion surgery, his fourth back procedure since early 2014, on April 19.

Torix, another drug mentioned by Woods, is an anti-inflammatory medication — effectively a better form of ibuprofen, with the biggest side effects ranging from dizziness to impairing kidney function, which could lead to internal bleeding.

Another anit-inflammatory listed was Vioxx. Though Woods told police he hasn’t taken it in over a year, it hasn’t been on the U.S. market since getting pulled in 2004 because of dangerous side effects that include a heart attack.

“It would be hard to obtain,” Page said. “But you could find a generic version overseas or online.”

Alone and when taken properly, any of the first three aforementioned drugs would likely be mostly safe. Taken incorrectly or together, however, can be another story.

“Any time you mix medications the danger is there can be a reaction because medications alter different pathways and you could be more sensitive to the effects of the other medications,” Page said.

RELATED: The sad story of Tiger Woods grows ever sadder

Not mentioned in the report, however, is prescription sleep aid Ambien.

In 2009, when Woods crashed his Cadillac Escalade into a fire hydrant outside his then-Orlando home after wife Elin Nordegren had reportedly discovered that he had been having extramarital affairs, Woods had reportedly taken Vicodin and Ambien earlier in the evening.

In the wee hours Monday, Woods did not mention Ambien. A toxicology report from a urine test is expected back in about two weeks and will reveal what was in Woods’ system at the time police found him asleep at the wheel in a Black Mercedes, the engine running but stopped in the right lane with the right blinker on and damage to his driver’s side tires, both bumpers and a tail light.

“What we often call [Ambien] is freeze-dried alcohol,” Page said. “It’s basically a downer.

“As a sleep medication it causes drowsiness, and can cause dizziness, lethargy and confusion. If you take it improperly it can be dangerous. A mix of Ambien and Vicodin; that’s a bad mix.”

A toxicology report would reveal if Ambien was in someone’s system, though, like with other medication it would only show a range of the amount and would likewise be imprecise in terms of showing when the person took the medications.

Woods, who said alcohol was not involved and blew a 0.00 in two breathalyzer tests, issued a statement on Monday evening saying, in part, that he had “an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications” and that he “didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.”

According to the report, Woods’ car had minor damage to the bumpers and rims. The passenger rear tail light was out and both tires on the driver’s side were flat.

The photos could wind up making a difference in how Woods is prosecuted. With his lack of a criminal record, Woods could be eligible for a local first-time DUI offenders program that could lesson his charge from DUI to reckless driving and cause him to avoid jail time. However, Woods could lose that legal option if it’s determined he was in a crash.

Woods was arrested at 2:03 a.m on Monday, booked at 7:18 a.m. and released at 10:50 a.m. He issued an apology that night in which he stated “alcohol was not involved.” That was backed up by the police report that said his blood-alcohol level was .000, however, the report also said Woods was found asleep at the wheel while partially blocking the right lane. He was unaware of where he was and failed several sobriety field tests.

Woods told police he takes four medications, including Vicodin. He is currently recovering from undergoing a fourth back surgery in late April.

Woods’ arraignment is scheduled for July 5 at 8:30 a.m.

Now what for Tiger Woods? More details from his DUI arrest early Monday morning in Jupiter, Fla., emerged on Tuesday, including the facts that Woods was found asleep at the wheel, did not seem to know where he was and, perhaps most alarmingly, that there was damage to the black Mercedes in which he was behind the wheel, specifically flat tires on the driver’s side as well as damage to the front and rear bumpers and a broken tail light.

Despite his cooperation with police and admittance of an “unexpected reaction” to prescribed medication, it is a harrowing picture. Woods’ arraignment is set for July 5.

That is if the matter even goes that far, something that is far from a certainty.

Speaking with multiple attorneys in South Florida who are well-versed in DUI cases in the area and familiar with the details of Woods’ arrest, all agreed that the state’s case against the 14-time major champion will hinge on the results of the toxicology report. Those results will take two to three weeks to come back.

Once they do, the state’s attorney is likely to go in one of four directions. In laymen’s terms, he can proceed with the case as a regular DUI offense; can file for more severe charges; seek a lesser charge, such as reckless driving; or not bring any charges at all.

Given the 41-year-old Woods’ lack of a criminal record (he was cited for reckless driving in the infamous 2009 crash into a fire hydrant outside his then-Orlando home), his standing in the community, his cooperation with authorities—which included submitting to a urine test—it seems plausible, according to those contacted by Golf Digest, that the charges could get knocked down to lesser offense. Also working in Woods’ favor is the fact that twice he blew a 0.00 when given a breathalyzer after his arrest.

“If charges do get filed, typically a defendant will file a plea of not guilty, and later [the state] can decide how they want to handle the case,” said attorney Eric Schwartzreich. The Fort Lauderdale-based lawyer has represented celebrities and athletes in similar cases, including Miami Heat basketball player Udonis Haslem, who in September 2010 saw marijuana possession charges against him dropped. “[Tiger] has a case to mount.”

If lesser charges were filed, Woods could likely avoid the possibility of any jail time. On the other end of the spectrum, if Woods were charged with DUI and convicted, the result would be much stiffer penalties. In Florida, first-time DUI offenders can face up to six months in jail, a year of probation, $1,000 in fines and fees, 12 hours of DUI School and 50 hours of community service. Woods’ license would also be suspended for at least six months.

We also posed the question to our lawyers whether a DUI involving alcohol versus one involving controlled substances would be treated differently. The latter involves much more of a gray area, starting with the fact that that it tends to be a more sympathetic matter among jurors, according to the attorneys. Additionally, while a breathalyzer can measure the amount of alcohol in someone’s system—.08 is the legal limit in Florida—a urine test is far less specific in detecting the amount of various substances, making it more tricky when used in court.

“A urine test doesn’t quantify how much or when you took the prescription drugs,” said Rob Melchiorre, a former assistant state attorney at the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office who is now a criminal defense lawyer at Perlet, Shiner, Melchiorre & Walsh, P.A. and also lives not far from where Woods was found. “You can narrow it down to a window—marijuana stays in your system 30 days but pills don’t stay in your system that long. The ironic thing is if he refused a urine test this case would’ve gone nowhere.”

PODCAST: What to make of Tiger Woods’ latest scandal?

Interestingly, Melichorre said that Ambien does not fall under DUI jurisdiction despite being a controlled substance. If that were to be the culprit found in Woods’ system, it would not be cause for DUI.

In 2009, Woods had reportedly taken the prescription sleep aid as well as painkiller Vicodin prior to crashing his car outside his Isleworth Country Club home. On Monday, Woods, who has undergone a handful of back surgeries since early 2014, told police he had prescriptions for four medications. Ambien was not one of the medications listed on the report; Vicodin was.

Meanwhile, Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg did not respond to messages from Golf Digest. The PGA Tour also said through a spokesman that it had no comment on Woods’ DUI or possible disciplinary actions.

As for how quickly Woods is able to move on from this latest incident, the answer could come down how Tiger and his legal advisors approach the matter moving forward, according to lawyers.

Said Schwartzreich: “Does he want to fight this, or get done with it and move on?”

Like many of his fellow professionals and others in the world of golf, Bubba Watson saw the mug shot, the one of a disheveled and droop-eyed Tiger Woods that was taken after he was arrested on suspicion of DUI early Monday in Jupiter, Fla., and winced.

“It was just tough to see that all over the news,” the two-time Masters champion said.

The latest travails of the 14-time major champion were fodder for speculation and reflection Tuesday at Muirfield Village Golf Club, where the 42nd edition of Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament begins Thursday. Woods often has been a topic of conversation at the Memorial, having won the premier invitational a record five times. But two years ago he made news of a different sort when he shot a third-round 85, the highest score of his professional career.

And now this latest bizarre episode, in which police found Woods asleep behind the wheel of his black Mercedes-Benz parked on a six-lane road in Jupiter at 2 o’clock in the morning. The car was still running. He was cited not only for DUI, but also for improper stopping, standing or parking in an illegal space. He spent nearly four hours in jail before he was released on his own recognizance.

In a statement Monday night Woods blamed “an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications.” A police report released Tuesday showed that Woods took a breathalyzer test that indicated an alcohol level of .000. Nevertheless, the report also included that Woods had “extremely slow and slurred speech” and did not know where he was.

“Frankly, I’m surprised that I’ve been asked about him,” said Jim Furyk, a past Memorial winner and partner of Woods on Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams. “It’s obviously a difficult time for him as he recovers from back surgery. That’s all I can say.”

“It’s difficult to comment. It doesn’t feel right,” said Matt Kuchar. “We don’t know what happened and we don’t know what’s happening with his back. I think we all just want to see him get back to being healthy and playing golf again.”

“Four back surgeries, how can we know what that’s like,” Bill Haas said. “Obviously, he’s dealing with a lot. People jump to conclusions. A lot of them are wrong.”

Indeed, most of the initial reports of Woods’ arrest have proven inaccurate. Meanwhile, there are still questions that need answering, such as the reason Woods was driving while impaired so early in the morning. It was raised by one player who requested his name not be used.

“I think we all are worried about Tiger,” he said, “but you have to ask, ‘What was he doing at that hour, and why is he taking Vicodin?’ I thought he said a few days ago that he never felt better. But he’s taking Vicodin? I just hope that isn’t an indication of something a lot more serious.”

Watson said he and fellow players would welcome a chance to sit down with Woods, to let him know that they support him.

“Look, we all have our dark places, and Tiger is human, which everyone seems to forget,” Watson said. “I think we all are concerned for him as a friend, and we would want to help him in any way we could. Whatever the cause of what happened to him, we just want him to get better.”

One man who did sit down with Woods recently was Nicklaus, the Memorial founder and host. They chatted at the Masters Champions Dinner in April, where Woods, who did not play for the third time in the last four years, confided to Nicklaus just how painful were his back problems. Woods, whose 14 major titles is second only to Nicklaus’ 18 majors, underwent fusion surgery on his back two weeks later, on April 19.

As far as the latest incident, Nicklaus deflected questions except to say that “I wish him well.

“I hope he plays again. The tour needs him,” added the Golden Bear. “I’m a fan of Tiger’s. I’m a friend of Tiger’s. And I feel bad for him. I think he’s struggling. And I wish him well. I hope he gets out of it and I hope he plays golf again. He needs a lot of support from a lot of people, and I’ll be one of them.”

More details have emerged from Tiger Woods’ Memorial Day Monday DUI arrest, and they’re not good for the 14-time major champ. According to a probable cause affidavit reported by WPTV.com and obtained by GolfDigest.com, Woods was asleep at the wheel in a Black Mercedes, the car running but stopped in the right lane with the right blinker on when he was pulled over at 2:03 a.m. He was alone and wearing a seatbelt.

Under the “Driver’s Statements” section, it reads: “Woods stated he was coming from L.A. California from golfing. Woods stated that he did not know where he was. Woods had changed his story of where he was going and where he was coming from. Woods asked how far from his house he was. It should be noted that Woods was heading south bound away from Hobe Sound. Takes several prescriptions.” Later in the report, four medications, including Vicodin, are listed under the heading “medical conditions.”

In a statement Monday night, Woods said alcohol was not involved and that the DUI charge stemmed from “an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications.” The police report confirms Woods’ blood-alcohol level was .000 in both tests taken.

The report also states Woods was “co-operative as much as possible,” but that he had “very slurred” speech and had trouble performing several “roadside tasks.”

Woods’ arraignment is scheduled for July 5.

By Jaime Diaz

“Tiger Woods arrested for DUI.”

Callous though it might sound, my guess is that in the short seconds after the initial impact of the headline, the next reaction by many among the multitudes immersed in all things Tiger would be “Not shocked.” Because for all the happy talk from and about Woods by those who wish everything was all right, it’s not unreasonable to surmise that the 14-time major-championship winner’s life has been troubled for awhile.

That doesn’t dismiss how the stark juxtaposition of the historical Tiger Woods and the latest facts continue to feel disorienting and surreal. The mug shot that will live forever (thanks to the Internet) of a disheveled and unshaven Woods looking into the police camera with hooded eyelids seared from the television screen. As ESPN’s David Lloyd intoned on SportsCenter late Monday morning. “THIS is the mug shot of Tiger Woods, one of the greatest players ever,” the camera slowly zoomed in for a close-up of the image, and then froze for a silent extra beat.

The man whose excellence as an athlete was built on his supreme self-control is not in control. And we may have reached a tipping point in which we will worry more about Woods as a person than as a golfer.

Of course, at this point, no matter how unsettling the latest incident, there are only questions and maybes.

The first maybe is that Woods’ arrest was the result of an isolated slip. An athlete in the midst of a long recovery from major surgery, very likely bored by inactivity, letting loose one night and in the aftermath using poor judgment. Woods has no history of unlawful conduct.

But common sense and past experience tells us such things—among celebrities and non-celebrities alike—don’t usually happen in a vacuum. Woods has unavoidably been subject to rumors, and some have involved speculation about excessive drinking or the use of painkillers. They gained traction after Woods’ car hit a fire hydrant in front of his Orlando home in late 2009. A former mistress said that Woods regularly took Ambien, while other sources said he had taken the drug on the night of the accident.

In the scandal-infused aftermath, Woods entered a Mississippi rehabilitation center called Gentle Path, which specializes in treating sex addiction. But the center’s website says it also addresses “co-occurring disorders” including those involving alcohol.

Woods has never alluded to issues with alcohol. He has sometimes referred to imbibing in his “favorite adult beverage,” and he has joked about his late father, Earl, being able to put away more than a few drinks. In a 2001 interview with Golf Digest’s Matt Rudy, the elder Woods said the following:

“With alcohol, I’m not a teetotaler. I feel that it’s the individual’s choice. And my responsibility as a parent was to teach him how to drink responsibly. So I use a story of when I used to live in Brooklyn. A friend of mine had his son visiting him, and we were having a New Year’s Eve party. His son proceeded to sample each bottle of liquor. He got as sick as a dog, right there. I cited this as an example to Tiger. See, you can’t mix scotch, rum, vodka, bourbon, Kahlua—it don’t work. And stay away from those exotic drinks that shield everything with sugar and sweetness and stuff. You don’t feel it until it’s too late. Learn to drink good-quality booze. It’ll pay off dividends if you don’t drink too much. And he listened and he learned.

“And the funniest thing: He left for Stanford—Tiger had never had a drink in his life—and he came home for Thanksgiving, and I was lying in bed watching television, and he said, ‘What are you drinking, Pop?’ I said, ‘Why?’ He said, ‘Give me that.’ And he built himself a drink and built me a drink—he knows what I drink—and then he came back into the room and said, ‘Pop, let’s go for a walk.’ We walked over to the park and we sat down and Tiger said, ‘I just want to share this first drink with you. This is the first drink we’ve ever had, the two of us.’ And we sat there and talked and talked and talked. One of the most beautiful moments of my life.”

His son has never been so forthcoming. Like most things in a personal life that he has guarded with the same intensity he played with, Tiger has avoided—with the possible exception of his “blue curtain” apology speech in early 2010 and to a lesser extent his 2015 interview in Time magazine—discussing personal failures or weakness.

It would seem unlikely that Woods will publicly be forthcoming about his inner life, including this latest ordeal, even though some professionals in the mental-health field would advise him that it would be productive. If he follows precedent, after an initial statement he and his camp will never voluntarily mention the DUI, and hope that if and when Woods begins playing competitively again, public curiosity will have dissipated, and even transformed from condemnation to sympathy and forgiveness. Especially, as has been the pattern, if Woods gives indications that he can play well again. His historical greatness is such that the majority of those who love golf will continue to hope that he can again exhibit a genius the game has arguably never seen.

The latest estimate is that the soonest Woods could come back to play after recovering from fusion surgery on the L-5, S-1 vertebrae would be in six months, making an appearance at his Hero World Challenge a possibility. He has reported that the surgery he underwent at the base of his spine eliminated the pain he has felt since before the first of his four back operations in the spring of 2014.

For dime-store psychiatrists (and what close Woods watcher isn’t) there is another ominous narrative. Maybe he doesn’t want to play anymore, and this kind of reckless behavior hastens a way out. Tiger talks fondly about helping raise his children, Sam and Charlie, whom he has joint custody with his ex-wife, Elin Nordgren, and how they have become the most important part of his life. Though he recently was emphatic about his desire to play professional golf again, the fact is that he has not been a regular competitor since his 2013 season, when he won five times on the PGA Tour. All the withdrawals and surprise surgeries—as well as a case of the chip yips in early 2015 that appeared career-threatening—has engendered much skepticism about Woods’ true will to continue to put his game, or for that matter his life, on display.

Through all this, the words of longtime Woods’ friend, Michael Jordan, spoken to Wright Thompson in a 2016 story in ESPN the Magazine, take on extra significance. “The thing is about T-Dub, he cannot erase,” Jordan said. “That’s what he really wants. He wants to erase the things that happened.”

All pretty dark stuff. But at the moment, there’s no other way to spin it. The Tiger Woods story, sad for awhile now, has grown sadder.
