Former PGA of America COO Darrell Crall speaks during a media event unveiling the PGA of America’s new golf courses in Frisco, TX in 2019.

By Brian Wacker
The PGA of America’s chief operating officer, Darrell Crall, will be leaving the organisation following his arrest last month for an alleged assault on his girlfriend. According to an announcement from the PGA of America on Tuesday, the decision was mutual.

“We will be providing a further update on operations and staffing in the near future,” PGA of America President Jim Richerson said in part in an email to the association’s members, adding that the PGA’s move of its headquarters from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., to Frisco, Texas, slated for 2022—which Crall was largely responsible for—continues to be a focus.

The decision comes a month after Crall, 53, was alleged to have attacked his girlfriend of three years, Angie Jasso, on Nov. 24. An arrest affidavit alleges that Crall pinned Jasso down on a counter and choked her, then threw her to the ground after she had refused to give her car keys to him at an apartment complex in Frisco. Crall was arrested and charged with assault family violence-impeding breath or circulation, which is a third-degree felony. He was released on $15,000 bond the following day and was initially placed on administrative leave from the PGA of America.

According to the affidavit, Jasso called 911 at 8:30 p.m. to request that officers come to the residence in the 5200 block of Town and Country Boulevard after being allegedly assaulted by Crall. She said in the affidavit that the two had begun arguing almost immediately after she arrived home.

Among Jasso’s charges is that Crall grabbed her neck forcefully enough where she was gasping for air. According to the affidavit, Jasso said Crall then pushed her to the ground, sat on her and pulled her hair.

Upon interviewing both parties, Frisco police saw that Jasso had a fresh red scratch on her cheek as well as two broken fingernails on her right hand and two scratches on her right hand. She also broke down in tears while recounting the incident to officers, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, Crall told officers that at no time did he intentionally hit Jasso. He said that a dispute over the car keys led to Jasso flailing her arms, where she accidentally struck him on the right side of his head. He said that as she pulled away, they both fell to the floor and that he accidentally fell on top of her before pushing himself off her.

“Please know that Darrell has full faith in the legal system and expects that when all the facts are known, the truth—that no crime occurred—is something everyone will understand,” Crall’s attorney, David Ovard, said in an email to Golf Digest. “In addition, the person who initially made a complaint has since recanted all of the allegations and doesn’t want this matter to be involved in the legal system. While it is unfortunate that incomplete reports and false assumptions have been made public, Darrell expects to be fully exonerated.”

Officers, however, ultimately determined that Crall was the aggressor in the incident and placed him under arrest.

Crall, who spent 16 years as executive director of the Northern Texas PGA Section, joined the PGA of America in 2011, first as senior director of player development, then its managing director of strategic development. He was named COO in 2012.

For the first time in almost a decade, a player will be using a golf cart during a major championship. According to the AP, John Daly has been granted permission by the PGA of America to ride in a cart during competition in next week’s PGA Championship at Bethpage Black.

The 53-year-old, who is in the field thanks to the lifetime exemption earned from his 1991 PGA Championship victory, received access to wheels under the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to the AP. Daly suffers from osteoarthritis in his right knee.

Daly withdrew from the U.S. Senior Open last year after his request for a cart under the ADA was denied. Daly’s knee problems also sidelined him from the Open Championship, although he was able to tee it up at Bellerive for the PGA Championship. He regularly plays on the Champions Tour, which allows its players to use golf carts during competition. He has not walked in an official event since the European Tour’s Omega European Masters last fall.

The last player to use a cart during a major was Casey Martin at the 2012 U.S. Open. Martin famously battled the PGA Tour for the right to ride in tournaments through the ADA, ultimately winning his suit. Martin also used a cart at the 1998 U.S. Open.

Daly has made just one cut at the PGA Championship since 2007, finishing T-12 at Kiawah Island in 2012. He lasted played Bethpage Black in competition at the 2002 U.S. Open, finishing T-70.

The 101st PGA Championship starts on May 16. Brooks Koepka is the defending champ.

The PGA of America is ready to move its headquarters from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., to Frisco, Texas, pending a vote this week by the Frisco City Council on a more than $500 million deal, the Dallas Morning News has reported.

PGA of America officials have been in discussions with officials and business leaders in the Dallas suburb since mid-2017, with talks becoming more serious earlier this year. However, the association was also weighing other options, including remaining in Florida, where its headquarters have located since 1965.

The deal in Texas is expected to include a 100,000 square-foot headquarters, two 18-hole championship-caliber courses and a nine-hole practice course, along with a new resort. Additionally, multiple PGA of America-hosted championships are also expected to be played in Frisco, including two PGA Championships. The vote is scheduled for Tuesday, according to the Dallas paper.

Reached by Golf Digest for comment, a PGA of America spokesperson said: “The PGA of America is pursuing an agreement for a transformational headquarters in Frisco. Until the process is complete, we will have no further comment.”

Sources confirmed with Golf Digest that new PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh discussed the likelihood of the move to Texas during a session at last month’s PGA of America Annual Meeting in Palm Springs, Calif. At the time Waugh noted that the deal still required final approval from local entities.

RELATED: PGA Championship re-ups with CBS on new TV deal, signs on with ESPN

What remains unclear is when the move would occur if the deal is approved, and whether the PGA of America will maintain a satellite office in Florida. A source said this was still to be determined as of the Annual Meeting. The PGA of America owns its current main headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens, which could be a possible location. The PGA of America also occupies a second building near the headquarters that it rents for what sources say is $1 million annually.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the PGA of America project would be developed by a newly created partnership of Dallas-based Omni Resorts, real-estate company Stillwater Capital and Woods Capital. Jonas Woods, the president and CEO of Woods Capital, was part of the development group that built Trinity Forest in Dallas, the new home to the PGA Tour’s AT&T Byron Nelson.

ST. LOUIS — A temporary fence broke on Monday at Bellerive, sending fans tumbling some eight feet towards the ground.

The fence, on a grandstand off the 18th hole, collapsed as fans tried to get autographs during a practice round. The Golf Channel was recording an interview with Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk when the incident occurred and captured the aftermath.

Your browser does not support iframes.

Jordan Spieth was nearby when the fence broke and rushed over to see if help was needed. Luckily no injuries were reported. The PGA of America issued a statement regarding the incident: “The safety of spectators is our top priority. This afternoon the temporary fencing in the spectator areas around the course was inspected and reinforced as needed to ensure it is secure.”
