The Players Championship has its traditionally standout field in place with 43 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking making the trip this week to TPC Sawgrass. While defending champion Cameron Smith is missing, having joined the LIV Golf League, eight past Players winners are competing—Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Webb Simpson, Si Woo Kim, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar and Adam Scott.

That’s in addition to all 14 winners on the PGA Tour in the 2022-23 season and 49 of 50 in the FedEx Cup points standings. Meanwhile, combined the entire field has won 323 PGA Tour titles among them.

The 144-player field will be competing for the richest prize in the PGA Tour. The overall purse is $25 million with the winner taking home $4.5 million.

Like just about everything else with the Open Championship, there is something singularly distinct regarding tee times at golf’s oldest major. It’s not so much who the R&A pairs with whom that holds people’s curiosities, as is the case with the cheeky-themed threesomes the USGA often puts together at the US Open. Rather, it’s the anticipation of when your name appears on the starter’s sheet and whether that means you’re on the “good” or “bad” side of the draw. And there will be a particular curiosity this week given the R&A is celebration the 150th Open back at the Home of Golf, the Old Course at St Andrews.

Indeed, unlike any other men’s major, where you’re placed in order of things at the Open — and how that fits into mother nature’s divine plans — plays an overly large role in a players’ chances of having a successful week, or seeing themselves packing their backs a few days early.

Case in point. 2010, one of the recent previous times the R&A visited St Andrews. The golfers who teed off in the morning during Friday’s second round at the Old Course played in calm conditions, eventual winner Louis Oosthuizen shooting a 67. Those who teed off in the afternoon, however, played in blustery winds and rain squalls. Rory McIlroy, after an opening-round 63, shot a second-round 80 to all but end his hopes of victory just 36 holes into the championship.

“When you feel like you’re playing well and you get the wrong side of the draw and you feel like the best you can finish is 10th, it’s a bitter pill to swallow,” McIlroy said in 2017. “But you have to realize in a 25- or 30-year career, you’re going to get some years that you’re on the good side of the draw.”

Indeed, the reason this is so central to how things play out at the Open is because of the mechanics of tee times themselves in the major. With sunrise at around 4.40am and sunset not until just shy of 10pm, the lengthy daylight allows all groups to tee off on the first hole, with tee times spread from as early as 6.30am to as late as 4.15pm. It’s a wider separation than anything on the PGA Tour (which employs split tees at almost all its events).

It’s another day of catch-up at the Masters, as the weather delay from the first round continues to impact the schedule at Augusta National.

On Saturday morning, 49 players resumed their second rounds and wrapped up play around 10 a.m. The cut wound up coming at even-par 144, a new record low for the tournament. Sixty players and ties will now be playing the final 36 holes, and will be heading out quickly to get the third round started on Saturday afternoon.

Players will be going off split tees again (first and 10th) in threesomes, the goal to get Round 3 finished before nightfall so that the tournament will finally be back on schedule for Sunday.

Last October, Tiger Woods won the inaugural Zozo Championship, earning his 82nd career PGA Tour title to tie Sam Snead for the all-time win record. Woods is set to defend this week—albeit under unusual circumstances—and looking to grab the victory mark outright from Snead.

As for those unusual circumstances, the event—the tour’s first regular tournament in Japan—has had to move this year to the U.S. due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Woods and the rest of the elite 78-player field will be competing at Sherwood Country Club outside Los Angeles, site of Woods’ World Challenge tournaments from 2000-2013.

Joining Tiger are several tour stars including FedEx Cup winners such as Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth. Also competing are the likes of Phil Mickelson, Hideki Matsuyama and Rickie Fowler. Two young guns are making their Zozo debuts: PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa and U.S. Open runner-up Matthew Wolff.

All told, 25 of the top 30 players in the Official World Golf Ranking—and eight of the top 10—are teeing it up at the Zozo. The only two missing members of the top 10 are Dustin Johnson, who withdrew on Monday after testing positive for COVID-19 before last week’s CJ Cup, and Bryson DeChambeau, who doesn’t plan to play again until next month’s Masters.

The winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.44 million share of the $8 million purse.

For the first time since 2006, golf fans had something to hold them over until the Masters this winter with the rescheduling of the Players Championship. The event, while not a major, still had a major feel, and it produced one of the more memorable Sundays in recent history. That’s not to say there aren’t other big-time events during the West Coast and Florida swings, but the Players gave fans the type of must-see tournament the winter months have been lacking in the last decade.

With that said, the Masters still can’t get here soon enough, and it will always signal the beginning of golf season, specifically for those who live in cold-weather areas of the country. The sights and sounds at Augusta National kick off the year in a way that no other tournament can, and this year’s edition of the Masters promises to be a special one. There are too many intriguing storylines to count, with Rory McIlroy’s quest for the career Grand Slam leading the way following his Players Championship victory. Of course, there’s also Tiger Woods, who will be the main draw as long as he’s still healthy enough to compete at Augusta National. Patrick Reed, whose game is beginning to trend in the right direction, is the defending champion.

The world’s best players head to TPC Sawgrass this week for the PGA Tour’s flagship event, the Players Championship. Since 2007, the Players has been contested in May, but it returns to its original spot on the schedule in March this year, making it the first marquee event of the season.

While there were doubts about whether or not two of the biggest stars in the sport would play, it appears those were quelled on Monday. Both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were out at TPC Sawgrass practising, and they are each scheduled to play on Thursday. Woods had skipped the Arnold Palmer Invitational due to a neck injury, while Mickelson just wanted to see how the course played this time of year before making his final decision.

The two ageing legends will take on arguably the best field in golf, as the likes of Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Francesco Molinari, Brooks Koepka and the rest of the top 50 players in the world are all set to tee it up. Webb Simpson, the defending champion, will play alongside Woods and Patrick Reed on Thursday and Friday.

The Open Championship is back at Carnoustie for the first time since 2007 and the eighth time in the event’s history. It’s arguably the toughest venue on the rota and has produced some incredible finishes in the past, none more famous than the wild ending to 1999 Open, when Jean van de Velde collapsed at the 72nd hole, blowing a three-stroke lead and losing in a playoff to Paul Lawrie.

This year’s event should be a special one once again, thanks to an always stout field ready to face the unique challenges links golf presents. The way-too-early forecast calls for temperatures in the high 60s and rain on all four days, plus 10-15 MPH winds. That could obviously change, but chances are the weather will come into play at some point in all four rounds.

The 2018 Open Championship is certainly not short on storylines, starting with Tiger Woods, who returns to the event for the first time since he missed the cut at St. Andrews in 2015. The three-time Open Championship winner continues to get closer to an 80th career victory, and there’d be few better places to do it than Carnoustie for what could be his 15th major title. According to our latest ranking, Woods is 25/1 to end his decade-long major drought. In his two Open appearances at Carnoustie, he finished T-7 and T-12.

Then there’s Jordan Spieth, the reigning Champion Golfer of the Year whose struggles on the greens have been well-documented this season. He’ll need a Birkdale back nine like turnaround at Carnoustie to win back-to-back. Dustin Johnson will also need a similar turnaround coming off his rough weekend in the U.S. Open at Shinnecock, an event he appeared to have wrapped up on Friday. Brooks Koepka, who claimed his second straight U.S. Open title, will be making his second start since Shinnecock and looks to continue to build on his impressive resume in the Open. In his last two starts in the event, he’s finished T-6 and T-10.
