The low stinger is a shot golf fans most associate with Tiger Woods, and for good reason. It’s fair to say he made it famous by employing it on some of the biggest stages throughout his career while the world was watching. But it’s not some secret shot only Woods knows how to pull off. In fact, many guys have done it better, like Ollie Schniederjans and Phil Mickelson, who hit by far the best stinger in golf last season.

Woodland has turned it into an art form. Take a look at this tweet from Justin Thomas last season:

Woodland has been recently making a strong case for First Team All Traj https://t.co/l83cpDtfIo

— No Laying Up (@NoLayingUp) July 18, 2018

That’s some high praise, and you won’t hear a word of protest from us, especially after Woodland added to his legend on Friday at the Sony Open in Hawaii. After a 303-yard drive at the par-5 18th, Woodland’s final hole of the second round, the three-time tour winner had 240 yards left into the green. With the Golf Channel’s camera positioned perfectly, Woodland unleashed what could easily go down as the coolest shot of 2019. We’ll be watching this on repeat for the rest of the weekend:

This is incredible from @GaryWoodland.

Just wait for the second angle. ??? pic.twitter.com/ElZOheHsE3

That’s what they call a STRIPE show. Who says there is no more creativity and shotmaking in golf? Just these last two weeks we’ve seen plenty, both courtesy of the 18th hole at Kapalua and Waialae CC. Unfortunately, those two holes are the exception rather than the rule. Woodland went on to make birdie to make the cut, and he’ll begin his third round 11 back of leader Matt Kuchar.

Tiger Woods barely made the cut at this week’s Players Championship, but he still provided arguably the most-watched shot from the first two rounds at TPC Sawgrass. And it wasn’t even anything that exciting.

The 14-time major champ may not be the player he once was, but he’s still the game’s biggest draw. And he’s still the only golfer who can turn something as simple as hitting an iron off the tee on a par 4 into a highlight. Seriously, this was just a 254-yard shot that found a fairway, and yet, it was a work of art. Enjoy:

Look at that <del>trajectory</del> TRAJ! A stinger that was also a slinger, perfectly shaped around the pond on No. 18. That’s pure golf porn right there. Absolutely spectacular.

But as beautiful as the shot was, it was also a reminder that we didn’t have Protracer for peak Tiger. Tragic. So let’s savor these moments while we can.

By Christopher Powers
In late October Tiger Woods nearly broke Twitter when he posted his “Return of the Stinger” video. It was majestic, mesmerising, masterful and major championship-worthy. I’d exaggerate more but I’ve run out of adjectives that begin with the letter M.

While the “stinger” was a shot Tiger made famous, it’s no longer exclusive to the 14-time major champion. Current PGA Tour pros who grew up watching Tiger can not only recreate it, but hit it even better, most notably fledgling star Ollie Schniederjans. Look no further than Schniederjans’ absolutely ridiculous 341-yard “stinger” at the Wyndham Championship this August:

Incredible stuff from Tiger and Ollie, no doubt, but this guy’s “putter stinger” that’s currently going viral on Instagram is impressive in its own right. Check it out:

Striped. The video was posted by Dave Benford, who appears to be a pretty good player according to his Instagram page. Per the comments, Benford estimates he hits this Adams A7 64 series putter between 200-250, which is very Justin Thomas-esque if you ask us.

The club twirl. The Sunday red shirt. The “Stinger.” If you’re playing Tiger Woods Comeback BINGO, you can circle all three of this trifecta of Tiger signature moves as of Monday afternoon. The 14-time major champ released his latest video and this time, it was a slow-mo clip of his patented low-trajectory tee shot set to a nice little sound effect. Check it out:

Return of the Stinger. #starwars pic.twitter.com/R7srIDGXjl

— Tiger Woods (@TigerWoods) October 23, 2017

Looking pretty smooth, Tiger — especially bending down to pick up the tee. This certainly won’t do anything to quiet down the chorus of “He’s BACK!” exclamations across the country.

Woods is still recovering from a fourth back surgery in April and has been taking things slowly, but his agent, Mark Steinberg said last week that his client has been cleared “to resume full golf activity with no restrictions.” With this latest box checked, we await one more big announcement: When and where Woods’ latest return to competitive golf will officially take place.
