Their latest creation: lugging a handful of pros into the Dubai desert to see if they can hit a two-yard fairway from 300 yards out. The ensuing spectacle is delightful:

By Joel Beall
Welcome to the Dew Sweeper, your one-stop shop to catch up on the weekend action from the golf world. From the professional tours, trending news, social media headlines and upcoming events, here’s every golf-related thing you need to know for the morning of Nov. 13.

Kizzire outlasts Fowler in Mexico
Par is often trivialised, especially at an event like the OHL Classic, which perennially boasts a winner’s score around 20 under. That would seem to be the case this year, where a 66-67 finish in a 36-hole marathon delivered Patton Kizzire his first PGA Tour win. Yet, it was the 31-year-old’s mettle in scrambling situations that repelled a hard-charging Rickie Fowler for a one-shot victory.

“It was pretty nerve-wracking, but I felt good,” Kizzire said after his round. “I’ve been in some pretty tough spots before, and I drew on those experiences.”

Kizzire turned in a five-under performance in the morning 18 to take a one-shot lead, and built his advantage to four with just seven holes to go. However, the 11 birdies on the day paled to his putting clinic on the final nine, converting par attempts from 12, 10 and eight feet on three consecutive holes. Not bad for a guy who ranked 128th in strokes gained: putting last season.

While Fowler made things interesting with birdies at the 16th and 17th, Kizzire’s tap-in par on the final hole sealed the victory.

“It means a lot, I’m pretty excited right now, pretty emotional and I was glad to get it done. Rickie made me work hard,” Kizzire said.

It was Kizzire’s third consecutive top 10 of the fall season, and the win guarantees his first trip to the Masters. Considering his Auburn Tigers whipped up on the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday, we’re guessing it’s a weekend Kizzire will remember for quite some time.

Ross Kinnaird /Getty Images

Sneds set to return from rare injury
Wrist and back injuries are common sights on the PGA Tour; sternum joint issues, not so much. That this flare-up befell Brandt Snedeker—one of the more consistent, sweet-swinging players on tour—was even more confounding. However, following a four-month absence from the sport, Sneds is set to return at the RSM Classic.

Telling Golf Digest’s Tim Rosaforte that he’s not 100 percent—regarding the chest problems, yes, but also in reference to new swing change—Snedeker remarked he’s comfortable enough with the progress to give it a go this week.

“The only way to push it more,” Snedeker said to Rosaforte, “was to get back out and play.”

Snedeker was enjoying a solid campaign before his injury sabbatical, posting a T-9 at Erin Hills and T-14 at River Highlands. Though his record at the RSM Classic is spotty, he should feel comfortable in the surroundings, as he once owned a home in the Sea Island community.

Richard Heathcote /Getty Images

Grace gets his major
Major championships have been something of a mixed bag for Branden Grace. The 29-year-old fired the first-ever 62 at a major this summer, and does have four top-fives at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship. Alas, he’s yet to find the winner’s circle on the game’s biggest stages. Which makes his triumph at the Nedbank Challenge all the more rewarding.

Calling it “Africa’s major,” Grace posted a final-round 66 at Gary Player Country Club at Sun City for a one-shot win over Scott Jamieson.

“This is a dream come true for me,” said Grace afterwards. “This is the one event that as a South African you want to win.”

Grace, who reached as high as 10th in the world in 2016, has seen his game suffer thanks to putting woes. However, back on speaking terms with his flat stick—and with a slate of major venues that seem conducive to his game—don’t be surprised if Grace returns to golf’s upper echelon in 2018.

Speaking of the Nedbank…

Pros prank amateurs with terrible lessons
From the buy-in of players to the spectrum of creativity, the European Tour’s social team is doing laps around their counterparts. Every week this group produces a new viral clip, all possessing an originality and wit the sport desperately lacks.

The crew’s latest creation: a group of Ryder Cup stars giving lessons to amateurs. And by “lessons,” we mean “purposefully sabotaging their games.”

How good is the Euro creative team? They make Ian freakin’ Poulter seem likable. THAT good.

PGA returns to Louisville
According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, the PGA Championship will be back at Valhalla Golf Club in 2024. An official announcement is expected this coming Thursday. It will be the Kentucky course’s fourth time hosting the Wanamaker Trophy.

In our recent ranking of PGA Championship venues, Valhalla was a divisive subject. Detractors pointed to a bland front nine, the eyesore of visible power/cable lines on the course and its penchant for a Mickey Mouse set-up. Conversely, Valhalla has elicited some exciting finishes—two PGA Championship playoffs, along with Rory McIlroy’s one-shot victory in ‘14—and promoted a rowdy Ryder Cup atmosphere in 2008, helping vault its standing on our list.

When the Valhalla news becomes official, the PGA of America will have locked in venues for the PGA Championship in nine of the next 13 years.

Golf’s social media queen could also be invited to be an official starter for the men at January’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

By Kent Gray
Organisers hope Paige Spiranac will again lend her social media celebrity to December’s Omega Dubai Ladies Masters but admit “we may not put her through the trauma of playing” the season-ending Ladies European Tour [LET] event.

Tournament Director David Spencer has revealed the 24-year-old American is likely to be offered an ambassadorial role at the €515,000 tournament from December 6-9 after emotionally missing the cut at the LET event the past two seasons.

Spencer is also hopeful the aspiring professional golfer will consider returning to act as the official starter for the men at the European Tour’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic, also at Emirates Golf Club, in late January.

Enter the Golf Digest Amateur Series today! CLICK HERE for Abu Dhabi GC event this Thursday

Asked if Spiranac would again be invited to the Ladies Masters, Spencer told Golf Digest Middle East: “Maybe, but we may not put her through the trauma of [actually] playing.“

Related Video: Spiranac hopes to ‘save someone’s life’ by speaking out on cyber bullies

“We’re hoping to bring her to the ladies and the men’s [Desert Classic] and we’re actually considering asking her to be the starter at the men’s event, the official starter.”

Spiranac made her professional debut, and created a global media storm, at the 2015 Dubai Ladies Masters courtesy of a controversial sponsors’ invite.

When the Instagram superstar returned to Dubai last December, she tearfully admitted to an on-going struggle with depression and anxiety due to cyber bullying in the wake of her rounds of 77-79 the previous year.

She had toyed with quitting the game after “the hardest experience of my life” but felt compelled to fight on and speak out given concerning teen suicide rates. “Hopefully I can save someone’s life, I think that’s so much more important than if I make the cut or miss the cut,” she said at the time.

Video: Paige Spiranac’s Top 3 short game tips

Sadly, Spiranac continued to be targeted by faceless online trolls after carding rounds of 77 and 80 on the Majlis layout to finish 13 over par, nine shots shy of the cut which fell at +4, last year.

Spencer took plenty of heat when he first invited Spiranac to Dubai and expects fall-out from the lastest decision. But he remains unapologetic, insisting Spiranac had significantly raised the profile of the Dubai Ladies Masters and would continue to do so in an ambassadorial role.

“We took a lot of criticism for that [the 2015 sponsors’ invite] too but we are happy to stand by what we’ve been criticised for,” said Spencer, who also serves as a strategic adviser to Falcon Golf who now run both the Ladies Masters and Desert Classic.

“In my life I’ve been lucky enough to be in golf situations and see which golfers light up a room when they walk into it and I include in that [list] Seve, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman and Tiger, of course.

“But the one I’d add to that is Paige, in that she has great presence, she’s an interesting character, she’s got lots of interesting [charity] causes. Apart from being physically beautiful, which she obviously is, she’s got a heart of gold and that comes across in corporate situations.“

David Cannon/Getty Images Spiranac during the second round of the 2015 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters.

Spencer admitted sponsors were initially reluctant for the tournament to be associated with Spiranac who profits from 1.2m followers on Instagram, and more than 235,000 and 162,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter respectively. But he said corporate backers had done a “complete 180 degree turn” and now, “I mean, they just love her.”

Related: Paige Spiranac and her crazy professional debut

“We think what may be happening is that people think this social media [strategy] is a sexist thing but I was so heartened at that public clinic [involving Spiranac] last year when we had all the young golfers there [watching],” Spencer said.

“There is obviously a connection to golf via social media and we’ve got to be competitive with other sports [and in the entertainment space]. It’s not easy to get sponsorship, whatever sport you have.”

Paige Spiranac started her week outing cyber bullies and ended it at the source of all that anguish, accentuating the positives after another “emotional” Omega Dubai Ladies Masters performance on social media.

The LPGA Tour hopeful, abused online after missing the cut in her pro debut in Dubai last year, again has the weekend off at the Ladies European Tour season-ender after carding rounds of 77-80 to finish 13 over par, nine shots shy of the cut which fell at +4.

The Scottsdale, Arizona 23-year-old, a magnet for the media all week, wasn’t in the mood to face the press after her eight over 80 Friday, instead giving her first reaction in reply to a fan on Twitter with: “Thank you for your support! It has been an emotional week for me but I know I’ll come out stronger.”

After later helping with a Pink Stars Clinic, Spiranac took to Instagram to share her feelings.

“My return to the @omegagolfdubai has been an incredible experience. I’m so grateful for the opportunities that golf has given me to make a difference in other people’s lives,” she started.

“I had so much fun working with these amazing kids at the clinic tonight showing them how much fun golf can be.

“I have also been incredibly touched with the outpouring of support and the stories you have all shared with me after I spoke about my experiences with bullying. This along with the tragic passing of [caddy] Max Zechmann has proven to me that there is more to life than the score you shoot.“

Spiranac was in good company in missing the cut, joined by World Golf Hall of Famer Dame Laura Davies who exited the tournament, shortened to 54-holes after the tragic death of Zechmann on Wednesday, after matching 75s left the four-time major champion two shots off the mark.

Californian Beth Allen, who had already sown up the LET’s order-of-merit title before landing in Dubai, teetered on the edge after spoiling an opening 71 with a second round 77. But she made the weekend on the number and will look to finish the season in style Saturday.

“I did feel some pressure because I didn’t want — like I wanted to win [the money title] properly. I know that Shanshan [Feng] hasn’t played in enough events [to qualify], but I wanted to make more money than her,” Allen said.

Three-time defending champion Feng, who is five shots off the Felicity Johnson’s lead, will need by far the biggest comeback in the tournament’s 11-year history if she is to win, the only way she can finish with more money than Allen even if unofficially.

With the beachside par 3 sixth hole providing a stunning backdrop for a giant hashtag encouraging more women to take up the sport, the stars of the game chose a wide range of words to sum up female greatness, from ‘strength’ to ‘perseverance’, ‘passion’ and ‘dedication’.

Desperate to prove to the world that she is more than some carefully constructed social media personality, Spiranac piled pressure onto herself and was then engulfed by a tidal wave of media scrutiny. Posting rounds of 77 and 79 that belied her obvious talent for the game, she handled a very public ordeal with class and charisma, and left knowing that this bitter disappointment may just be the most valuable lesson she’ll ever learn.

The inside story on Paige’s debut
Paige Spiranac was probably going above and beyond the call of duty by happily agreeing to another round of media interviews on the final day of last month’s Omega Dubai Ladies Masters.

Her appearance at the event (so controversial to some, despite the fact her only crime was to accept a sponsor’s invite) had already brought an unprecedented level of global attention to the Ladies European Tour’s season finale. She had been overcome by nerves in the tournament, snap-hooking her very first drive about 20 yards and addressing every subsequent shot with trembling hands and a thundering pulse rate. Her missed cut brought with it a very tearful meltdown and a suggestion that she was perhaps not cut out to pursue a career in golf. The next evening, Spiranac returned to take part in a star clinic, sign autographs and pose for pictures with the watching kids. It was probably the last thing she fancied doing, but like every other new experience on this, her first trip out of the United States, she embraced it with a huge smile and an easy charm that was impossible not to admire.

It had been a pro debut unlike any other in the history of golf. Ninety-nine percent of the golfers that turn pro get to cut their teeth in tranquil anonymity on some low level mini-tour, away from the camera lenses, the galleries and the player cocktail parties. Some do get fanfare, but only if their amateur achievements are truly eye-catching. Tiger Woods brought a frenzied circus with him to the professional game, but the three-time U.S. Amateur champion was already so brilliant by then, and so used to the singular demands of public expectation, that he took it all in his stride.

Related: (Video) Paige Spiranac’s top 3 short game tips

Meanwhile, Paige Spiranac was just a college hopeful who got so famous that the world decided to tune in for the first time she pegged it up as a pro. And as it transpired, it was all a little too much to cope with.

“I think she was carrying six shots of pressure in every round,” says golf in DUBAi’s David Spencer. “Regardless of the negative comments that some people made, she was great for the tournament and she’s great for golf. We need to build a bridge to attract younger people to the game, and she has the power to do that.”

This point brings us to the first real misconception about Spiranac, which is that she’s an attention-seeker. The first golfer to find mainstream fame almost exclusively by way of Instagram, the Arizona resident has three times more followers than any other female professional golfer on the app. At the rate she’s going (583,000 at last count), Spiranac could soon overtake Rory McIlroy as the most-followed golfer on the planet. And she hasn’t even cashed a cheque on tour yet.

If her bemusement at this rise to social media celebrity status is an act, it’s a convincing one. “A writer found my account on Instagram and did an article on me,” she recalls with a sheepish grin during an exclusive interview with Golf Digest Middle East last month. “And then someone else did one, and another, and another, and it all just snowballed from there. One day I woke up and I had 50,000 followers. I was like, ‘Mom, this is weird, I’m getting a lot of followers on Instagram!’ And she just replied: ‘What’s Instagram?’

“It’s super-flattering, but if you told me this was going to happen, I would have just laughed in your face.”

Social media (and particularly Instagram) has spawned an entire new generation of young people who wantonly chase online fame, yet Spiranac insists that while recognising her popularity as a means to an end, all she’s ever chased is success in golf. Well, that and her first love, gymnastics. “When I was a kid, I wanted to compete in the Olympics,” she recalls. “I was in the gym six days a week, seven hours a day. But I ended up fracturing my kneecap. After that, I realised I didn’t want to go after something where I could seriously hurt myself, so my dad was like, ‘you would like golf, it’s a little bit easier on the body!’

As disciplines they may appear to be poles apart, but Spiranac quickly credits gymnastics when reflecting on the ease with which she took to golf. “I had a lot of body awareness, flexibility and core strength. They are all huge when it comes to the swing. And I was a late starter at 13. I had a lot of catching up to do.”

With a somewhat unorthodox start to life as a golfer, Spiranac developed an appreciation for the game that is lost on the child prodigies whose early relationship with golf is part parental resentment, part raging competitiveness. Spiranac is not just a golfer; she’s a certified golf nerd. “The golf course is my happy place. There’s a serenity to golf that you don’t find in other sports. When I played Pebble Beach for the first time recently I was just staring open-mouthed at every hole until eventually people were like, ‘Paige it’s your turn to hit’.”

Though she took an instant liking to the Majlis, this famous old venue at Emirates Golf Club ended up shattering that serenity with a sudden jolt. Her perceived self-confidence is the second major misconception about Spiranac. Forget the perfectly executed Instagram flop-shots, when it comes to golf, she has been battling an inferiority complex since the day she first picked up a club.

“My parents didn’t really know much about the game. So I ended up playing in a national tournament like two months after taking it up, and shooting about 113. My early memories are of playing these tournaments and thinking, man, these girls are so good. And now it’s come full circle at the Ladies Masters because I’m still thinking that!”

Paralysed by nerves and self-doubt, Spiranac admits to agonising over whether to withdraw the night before last month’s tournament. “There are puddles on my bathroom floor from how many tears I shed this week. Every single time I stepped up to hit a shot, I was shaking. I had put so much pressure on myself. I’d never played in front of crowds or cameras either, so every time I would step on a new tee there would be something else going on. Going forward, it seems like every other tournament I play will not be as demanding now.”

Spiranac also admits to being affected by comments made by her army of followers on social media during the tournament, before confirming with a wry smile that this will be the last time she turns to her phone for support. “I was hoping to feel a lot of positive feedback, and there were more negatives, which made me even more nervous. I should have just been confident in myself and my game.”

Of all the new experiences to confront the 22-year-old during her Dubai Ladies Masters adventure, this realisation is the most profound lesson learned. “The bottom line is, I have to just focus on myself. I can’t control what other people say or think about me. I wanted people to like and accept me, but the fact is that may never be the case. My sister told me, ‘you might be the ripest peach on the tree, but there’s still going to be someone out there who doesn’t like peaches’. Going forward, I’m not going to let other people affect how I see myself.”

While Spiranac’s numbers on the course amounted to a personal failure, the numbers off it, aided in no small part by the attention surrounding her, represented a huge success for the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters. “We had a 30 percent increase in footfall this year and the news coverage was crazy,” says Spencer. “We would welcome her back with open arms. Part of our strategy is to attract more visitors from the U.S., and she has helped immensely to spread the word.”

Whatever she does from now, Paige Spiranac will always look back on the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters as the craziest week in the her life. As she begins to plan her 2016 tournament schedule, a return in 12 months could yet be on the cards. One thing’s for sure, the world will be watching.
