The allure of Tiger Woods’ equipment was on display over the weekend, as a backup putter netted more than $150,000 at an auction on Sunday.

Golden Age Golf Auctions confirmed on Sunday morning the winning bid of $154,928 on this backup Scotty Cameron putter, which was produced for Tiger in 2001 in case his Scotty Cameron Newport 2 became damaged. It’s been reported that Scotty Cameron produced one or two extra putters for Tiger per year, and he would practice with them or keep them handy in case it was needed in competition.

Tiger has used his original Scotty Cameron Newport 2 to win 14 of his 15 major titles.

It’s believed that this six-figure price is the highest for similar pieces of equipment. It’s not known how this piece was acquired and put up for auction. The rarity of a piece of Tiger’s equipment collection—was evident in this big-time price tag.

Golf Digest’s Daniel Rapaport reports that Woods is contemplating a putter switch for the PGA Championship, benching his trusted Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS in favour of a new Cameron prototype.

Woods’ camp told Rapaport the decision will not be made until Thursday, but the plan at the moment is to put the prototype in play.

Woods has used the Cameron Newport 2 GSS for 14 of his 15 major wins, including his 2019 Masters triumph. However, Woods struggled on the greens at the Memorial, his lone appearance in the PGA Tour’s restart season, posting a negative strokes gained figure on the week. He also laboured with the flat stick at the Genesis Invitational, his only other start in 2020, finishing 67th out of 68 qualified players in sg/putting.

The prototype Woods is testing at Harding Park is similar to the Newport 2 GSS. The primary difference is adjustable weights in the heel and toe, allowing Woods to better calibrate to the speed of the greens.

Woods has won the PGA Championship four times in his career, his last Wanamaker coming at Southern Hills in 2007. He tees off Thursday at 11:33 AM ET with Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy.  The United Arab Emirates is 8 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time.
