Vincent urges International Series stars to follow in his footsteps to LIV Golf League

As The International Series 2023 schedule draws to a thrilling conclusion, Iron Heads star Scott Vincent has urged his former colleagues on the Asian Tour to ‘stay in the moment’ and join him on the LIV Golf League.

The Zimbabwean claimed a money-spinning spot among some of the biggest names in world golf last season by winning the inaugural International Series Order of Merit.

While this season’s OOM winner is guaranteed a spot on the 2024 roster, a potential pathway to riches has opened up to others on The International Series.

Eligible players inside the top 40 of the standings will also be in with a chance to claim three further places on the League through an innovative three-day LIV Golf Promotions event that will take place at the iconic Abu Dhabi Golf Club from 8-10 December.

Vincent more than held his own among the 13 major winners, former World No. 1s and huge names on the LIV Golf League this season, positively relishing the steep learning curve. He said: “That’s the coolest thing about LIV — you get to play with some of the best players in the world and that’s what we grew up hoping for — to challenge and push ourselves and reach new levels, something you never dreamed of.

“The experience overall has been incredible. It reminds me so much of college golf, which I think most of us loved. The team aspect is amazing. You have buddies out there going to dinner and sharing experience and you are rooting for them and they are cheering for you.

“It makes for an amazing atmosphere. The spectators are incredible, and the music is a huge hit and I think we all love playing in this. Also, from a family perspective with the support we get, there is so much to love about it.”

Prior to the final weekend of the regular season at LIV Golf Jeddah, Vincent could have been proud of the form which had brought a fourth place at LIV Golf Singapore and another six top-20 finishes overall.

But going into round one on Royal Greens, he was still outside the ‘Lock Zone’: the top 24 in the standings which guarantees a place on the roster next term. Things didn’t look too hopeful after a low-key, level-par opening round of 70.

Vincent put his foot down on day two with a sensational round of 62, before a closing 66 ensured a fourth-placed finish overall in the tiebreakers for the tournament on 12-under. That result thrust him from 31st in the standings to 22nd, securing a spot on the Iron Heads roster for another season.

Reflecting on the result, Vincent explained that the top 24 was not his target over the weekend. He said: “It was one shot at a time. I try not to focus on the leaderboard — it takes you too much into the future or the past, so I just try to play golf and stay present.

“That weekend more than most I think I did the best and it helped me stay present and that’s a huge goal. Just be in the moment, experience it and enjoy it.”

When asked for words of encouragement for this season’s hopefuls on the Asian Tour, Vincent said: “Go for it! I know they are going to, but more than anything is to try and stay in the moment. Enjoy the experience, this is how we learn grow and get better.”

And for his younger brother Kieran? After all, the 25-year-old is currently third in the OOM standings and a certainty for the LIV Golf Promotions qualifier in Abu Dhabi. Vincent snr said: “He is a fantastic player, working on all [the] right things and moving in a solid direction. He has an amazing future in front of him, and he is on his own journey. It is exciting to follow.”

The International Series Order of Merit will be decided in a three-week swing that closes out the schedule for the 2023 season: the Volvo China Open (2-5 November), the Hong Kong Open (9-12 November) and the BNI Indonesian Masters (16-19 November).

Scott Vincent is one of Zimbabwe’s finest exports, having exploded on to the scene with victory in England during the inaugural Asian Tour International Series — and took full advantage of the LIV Golf ticket that came with it.

The two-time Olympian was possibly a household name in his own house before he grabbed the headlines at Slaley Hall in Newcastle — the first ever Asian Tour event held in the UK — last June.

Then his distinctive look engaged a whole new audience as he teed up just outside London in the first LIV Golf tournament at Centurion Club — think ginger locks flowing out the back of a fedora months before a certain Cam Smith joined LIV Golf’s ranks.

Who was this kid holding his own alongside the likes of Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson?

Well, the 30-year-old ‘kid’ is big business in Asia, having claimed the 2021 Sansan KBC Augusta and ANA Open on a three-week bounce, following up with the Mizuno Open early in 2022, booking a spot in the Open Championship in the process.

A week later, Vincent was grabbing attention once again on international TV as he won the International Series England at Slaley Hall in Northumberland, England.

A final-round 66 clinched the win and triggered a snowball of success and eight lucrative events on the LIV series (finishing 14th in Chicago) as well as the Asian Tour Order of Merit crown and a guaranteed place in the 2023 14-event LIV Golf League season alongside superstars such as Phil Mickelson, Koepka, Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith.

“I think the past 12 months were not what I was expecting,” Vincent told Golf Digest Middle East. “It has taken me way out of my comfort zone and has been really stretching me.

“But it is allowing me to become the player I really expect to be as I get to rub shoulders with the guys — the ex-PGA guys — and I am truly soaking it all in and loving it.

“It was a stage to really learn, and to get to play on the LIV Series last year was a huge bonus, and I managed to get a lot more comfortable with that.

“Now I have a whole new year ahead of me in 2023, and that is an amazing opportunity once again and I am really looking forward to that.”

Vincent keeps a tight-knit unit with him at all times to keep him grounded in a whirlwind time.

“I think that the team that I have with me is really good and they are helping me get ready for this season,” he said.

“We are just working on the processes and getting the game moving in the right direction. The results will come as I hit my routines.”

While Vincent has amassed around $1.5 million in earnings from LIV Golf alone in 2022, he does not forget how it all began.

“I think what the Asian Tour has done is incredible, how they have stepped out of Covid and set up all these new series and events,” he said. “As a result of that we are seeing a lot more better players coming over to play and compete in these events that would normally only attract one or two global names.

“It is becoming more of a solid, well-rounded tour, not just a feeder tour like before. The Asian Tour has done a great job with that and a lot of people will be prioritising on the Asian Tour full-time.

“But for me, this year I am trying to play a lot less golf — I have played a lot, maybe too much in the past — and now I have that opportunity through the 14 LIV events and the International Series, so I am trying to dial back a bit and give my body a bit of time to recover so I am ready when it needs to be ready.

“I am playing in Oman and Doha and then off to Mexico to start the LIV campaign.”

Asian Tour International Series Order Of Merit winner Vincent earns LIV Golf League spot

The Asian Tour season came to a thrilling conclusion at the $1.5 million BNI Indonesian Masters in Jakarta, with Scott Vincent crowned International Series Order of Merit winner, a result that gave the Zimbabwean golfer a “golden ticket” to the LIV Golf League next season.

Going into the final event of the tournament, the entire top 10 of the International Series Order of Merit rankings — including Vincent’s fellow participants at the inaugural LIV Golf season and fellow International Series winners Sihwan Kim and Andy Ogletree of America, Jazz Janewattananond and Nitithorn Thippong of Thailand and Taehoon Ok of Korea — were still in with a shout of securing top spot.

A T-10 finish for Vincent, the International Series England winner earlier this season, was enough to cement his place at the top of the season’s standings, with none of the other players breathing down his neck going into the final event of the season able to find the win that would have vaulted them to the top of the standings. Janewattananond came closest with a 12-under score this weekend, but that was only enough for him to secure a sixth-place finish.

Vincent now has his card for the 14-tournament series, which has recently announced dates in Mexico, Spain, Singapore and Australia for next season, lining up with some of the biggest names in world golf including major winners Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith and Brooks Koepka.

A delighted Vincent said: “It feels pretty special to win the International Series Order of Merit this year. It was not something that was on my radar earlier this year. Now that it is a reality, it’s unreal.

“The highlight for me was the International Series in London. Making a putt to win on that last hole was just really cool. Ten-footer, left to right, down the hill; making that putt was special.”

On earning his golden ticket to compete in next year’s LIV league, the 30-year-old added: “It’s incredible. Getting a taste of LIV this year, you want to go back. You want to compete against the best in the world. The fact that I get to do that now, it’s really cool, and I look forward to the challenge.”

The International Series was launched earlier this year thanks to a landmark partnership with LIV Golf with the aim of invigorating the game in Asia and the Middle East.

The partnership brought the International Series to Thailand, England, Singapore, South Korea, Morocco and Egypt, as well as Indonesia, on a hugely successful debut season.

Some 10 International Series events will take place next year, each with a prize purse of at least US$2 million. The highly anticipated International Series 2023 season will kick off in Oman at the Al Mouj Golf from February 9-12, with a prize purse of $2million.

A number of players signed up to LIV Golf, including Patrick Reed, Chase Koepka, Ogletree and Bernd Wiesberger have all played events on the International Series this season.

LIV Golf jump paying dividends for David Puig and a new Vincent emerges at International Series Morocco

David Puig’s decision to cut short his college career, play LIV Golf, and turn professional is quickly starting to look justified after the Spanish rookie took the third-round lead in the inaugural $1.5 million International Series Morocco.

He carded a four-under 69 at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam to lead on 10-under by two shots from overnight leader Richard T Lee from Canada, who carded a 74.

Another LIV-er, Scott Vincent, has familiar company as his brother Kieran is tied alongside him for third, one stroke further back, along with Australian Scott Hend, who came in with a 72.

Puig, who played for Arizona State University, turned professional in September to compete in the LIV Golf Invitational event at Chicago, and this week’s Asian Tour event is only his second tournament as a pro.

“You know, I played pretty good overall,” said the 20-year-old. “Obviously I hit it pretty good to not make any bogeys, but the whole day I played pretty steady. I’m hitting fairways and greens, and I made all the short putts that I needed to make. I’m excited and looking forward for tomorrow.

Kieran Vincent’s was the latest victim to the airline crisis. Not only did his clubs not arrive with him when he landed on Tuesday from New York, but he only received them on Thursday morning just hours before he teed off after he went to pick them up at Casablanca airport, which is well over a one-hour drive from the golf club.

“I didn’t even know my clubs were there [at the airport on Thursday]. I was lucky enough that they were coming on that flight from JFK, so I picked them up and got here just in time for my tee off time,” said the Zimbabwean.

“I had arrived here on Tuesday morning and was club-less. So just came up to the course and thought at least we’ll see the course and do a little bit of practice. I think I was using someone else’s wedge, and a putter from who knows when.

“One of the guys from here I was lucky enough for him to lend me a set for Wednesday too, if I was able to just go out there and play a couple of holes. So, I was lucky enough to do that. But the main reason was we had some clubs to play and practice with.”

He made an eagle, and seven birdies and will play in the final pairing on Sunday with Puig and Lee, with his brother Scott in the penultimate group.

A man named Koepka leads LIV Golfers in field for Asian Tour International Series Morocco

For fans coming out to watch the Asian Tour’s first visit to North Africa for the $1.5 million International Series Morocco this week should recognise a familiar name on the leaderboard at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam.

A certain Mr Koepka will be leading a fleet of LIV Golfers heading to Rabat to contend in the landmark event, now their inaugural season is over.

However, it is not four-time major winner, former world No. 1 and LIV Golf Jeddah champ Brooks who will line up in Morocco, but rather his brother and fellow Smash teammate Chase.

Chase has steadily improved over the first LIV Golf season, with some solid golf also helping his Smash GC to the team title in Saudi Arabia. He will be leading a youthful LIV brigade, with the likes of James Piot, Turk Pettit, David Puig and Andy Ogletree joining Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent and Asian Tour regulars Sadom Kaewkanjana, Phachara Khongwatmai and Sihwan Kim out on the course from Thursday.

Vincent is no stranger to the Asian Tour himself, balancing his time out there with his duties on LIV Golf, and with just four events remaining, including the International Series Morocco, the Zimbabwean is ranked first on the International Series Order of Merit (OOM) and fifth on the Asian Tour Order of Merit, with lucrative purses still to play for.

Despite the stakes being high, Vincent is taking it one step at a time. “I try not to think about it,” he told the Asian Tour. “Obviously, it is there, and people talk about it. For me it’s not a priority, I am just trying to work on being present, being here. This is one of the steps in my career, this is where I am now.

“I am focusing on the very next thing I have to do, which is a press conference I have to be at shortly. And, of course, any opportunity I have to come back and play in Africa it is a great thing.”

The Tour moves over to the International Series Egypt next week, finishing with the Bangladesh Open and the Indonesian Masters – which is also an International Series event.

Vincent leads the International Series OOM with earnings of US$407,025 from the four International Series events played so far, by $80,000 from Sihwan. On the Asian Tour OOM he trails leader Bio Kim by around $180,000. But, with big purses still to play for, all that could quickly change.

“I think the course this week is going to show you who are the best players,” added Vincent. “My game comes and goes, it is a work in progress and we try and stick to our routines and work the best with what we have. I am constantly working on it, trying to improve, trying to make my game the best it can be.

“Just coming from last week [LIV Golf Team Championship in Miami], I haven’t fully digested it. Off the top of my head, those guys who are the best in the world, like Cameron Smith and Dustin Johnson, they are able to do what they do more consistently at a very high level and very often. I have got to find ways to do that very consistently.”

Scott Vincent, known as one of the most likeable guys on the LIV Golf and Asian Tours, is busy making another name for himself as once again he finds himself leading the way in the Asian Tour’s International Series. The Zimbabwean fired a stunning bogey-free eight-under 64 in the opening round of the $1.5 million event at Singapore’s Tampines Course at Tanah Merah Country Club.

He took advantage of an early start on Thursday to surge into a three-stroke clubhouse lead, with Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana, Tirawat Kaewsiribandit and Korean Kyongjun Moon carding 67s in the stifling heat. Another LIV Golfer, Phachara Khongwatmai, also managed to get to five-under and Vincent’s brother Kieran returned a 68 along with Americans Dodge Kemmer and Turk Pettit, Australia’s Todd Sinnott, Japan’s Jinichiro Kozuma, Janne Kaske from Finland, Nitithorn Thippong from Thailand, and Vietnam’s Michael Tran.

Of the afternoon starters, Gavin Green managed to get within touching distance of Vincent thanks to another bogey-free round, his 65 taking him to second spot on his own on seven-under.

Vincent won the inaugural International Series England in Newcastle in June and leads the International Series Order of Merit, having tied for 11th in Thailand in March, and was once again in inspired form in the Asian Tour’s new raft of million-dollar plus events.

“It was a great day, just got off to a really nice start, and then the momentum just kept going. As I have said before I am just out here trying to be a little better each day,” said Vincent. “Today was a really good day, a lot of things went my way, a lot of putts went in, so it was a good challenge trying to stay present and stay in the moment and enjoy each stage and not get too far ahead. Yeah, so that was the big challenge today and the golf was phenomenal.”

Not everything went Vincent’s way though as on the par-three sixth he hit what looked like a great tee shot that was zeroing in on the pin but hit his playing partner American Sihwan Kim’s ball. “Sihwan hit a shot to about three feet – that was the real problem,” he said. “My shot came in and pitched on his ball and then kicked all the way back [about 30 feet]. I was fortunate to walk away with a par there but a nice little challenge there for me trying to finish my round. I was happy to walk away with a par.” Sihwan, who currently leads the Asian Tour Order of Merit, returned a 71 – impressively bouncing back from a torrid four-over first nine, with a five-under second nine.

Major winner Patrick Reed was not so fortunate as he struggled to a one-over 73 in the heat and humidity on his first visit to Singapore.

Dubai-based Indian Shiv Kapur kept up his challenge at the Asian Tour International Series England at Slaley Hall on Friday, with a second-round 70 that took him to five-under for the tournament, one off the clubhouse lead held by South African Justin Harding and South Korea’s Joohyung Kim.

Harding shot a tremendous 66 in difficult conditions just outside Newcastle in a historic event — marking the Asian Tour’s first ever tournament in the UK.

As the golfers push for glory and a slice of the $2 million purse, there is also the added incentive of the top five golfers booking a place at next week’s money-spinning LIV Golf Individual Series opener at Centurion Club, just outside London.

Before the afternoon starters headed out, Kapur was tied-third alongside Zimbabwean Scott Vincent — who arrived in Newcastle after a 24-hour journey from Japan, without his clubs — and Japan’s Kosuke Hamamoto. While Kapur and co looked on from the clubhouse, no one could catch Harding and Joohyung, with South African Neil Schietekat, Thai pair Kosuke Hamamoto and Kasidit Lepkurte, and Chang Wei-lun from Chinese Taipei joining Kapur on one-under ahead of the third round.

Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent arrives in Newcastle for Asian Tour’s International Series England after 24-hour trip — and without his clubs

Fresh from winning the Mizuno Open in Japan, a bleary-eyed Scott Vincent arrived in Newcastle following a 24-hour trip, via Helsinki and Amsterdam, ahead of the Asian Tour’s International Series England.

Other than some sleep, only one other thing was missing as he prepared for the Asian Tour’s first competition in the UK — his clubs.

The Zimbabwean will compete at Slaley Hall Hotel to compete in the landmark $2 million event.

“I’m feeling good but obviously I would love my clubs to be here but that’s not the case right now,” the 30-year-old told the Asian Tour. “We don’t know when they are due to arrive, but we’ll give them a call.”

He beat Australian Anthony Quail on the second extra hole to win the Mizuno Open at the weekend after starting seven-shots behind the Australian overnight leader Quail.

Vincent added: “It was a bit of a surprise because I was coming from so far behind. It was absolutely amazing, it kind of all worked in my favour. It was a great day, some really good golf and fun to get into a playoff and come through with a win because I have been in many playoffs that have not gone my way.

“I feel pretty good. I have just got to get used to the weather and England, it’s a completely different style of golf. I am excited to play, excited for the opportunity. It’s fun walking the course, seeing the different grasses and different shots we have to hit. I am not so sure about the wind and weather up here. I know it can get rainy and cold so got to prepare and get ready for that.”

Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent books Open Championship spot with Mizuno Open triumph in Japan

Scott Vincent sensationally booked his spot at the Open Championship at St Andrew with victory on the Japan Golf Tour Organisation Mizuno Open on Sunday.

The Zimbabwean looked down and out going into the final round at at JFE Setonaikai Golf Club as he was seven strokes behind overnight leader Australian Anthony Quail, but a brilliant seven-under 65 took him into a playoff with Quail.

A par by Vincent on what was their third visit to the 18th was enough for Vincent to claim his third JGTO title.

Last year he won twice in Japan: first at the Sansan KBC Augusta in August, then the ANA Open the following month.

Vincent and Quail finished tied on 12-under, while Australian Brad Kennedy, who like Vincent is also an Asian Tour member, finished in solo possession of third, two strokes back.

“I had no idea where I was standing [on the leaderboard] when I walked up to 18 and when I realised that I was sitting second, at that stage, that was pretty amazing,” said Vincent, who is competing in this week’s International Series England at Slaley Hall, near Newcastle.

“Each week, I don’t really try to worry too much about the expectations. I just focus on sticking to my routine and giving myself the best chance. And this is one of those weeks that has worked out well for me.”

The Zimbabwean’s victory means he will be able to make his debut in a Major.

He added: “I’m really excited about playing my first Major, especially as it’s St Andrews, the Home of Golf. It’s been a goal of mine since the start of the year to try to get into one of the Majors.
