Defending champion Daniel Gavins will be joined by fellow DP World Tour winners Rasmus Højgaard, Pablo Larrazábal and Thorbjørn Olesen at next year’s Ras Al Khaimah Championship.

Ras Al Khaimah will host the DP World Tour for the third consecutive year, with Al Hamra Golf Club once again welcoming some of the world’s best golfers to the Emirate from January 25-28, 2024.

The event will be the third stop on the DP World Tour’s International Swing, following the inaugural Dubai Invitational at Dubai Creek Resort and the 35th edition of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Last year, Gavins won his second DP World Tour title in the most dramatic of circumstances as he claimed victory by just one stroke after a double bogey on the 72nd and final hole.

Daniel Gavins

The Englishman had a three-stroke lead on the 18th tee but found the water twice on the daunting closing hole, however he held his nerve on the green as he made a 25-foot putt to take the title.

“It was fantastic to win my second DP World Tour title in Ras Al Khaimah, but I would have liked for it to have been less stressful,” said Gavins.

“I’m really pleased with how I kept my composure and made that putt on the last, it’s a moment I’ll always remember and it’s something I’m very proud of.”

Four-time DP World Tour winner Rasmus Højgaard will be looking to follow in his twin brother Nicolai’s footsteps when he tees it up in Ras Al Khaimah, after Nicolai won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2021.

“You want to win every time you play a tournament, and my brother and I are very competitive, so it would be special to see both of our names on the same trophy,” he said.

“I really feel as though I had an opportunity to win last year, so I’m hoping to make amends when I return to Al Hamra.”

Rasmus Højgaard – Getty Images

Larrazábal, who is seeking a tenth DP World Tour title, has claimed four wins on three continents since March 2022, with two wins in Europe, and one each in Africa and Asia.

The Spaniard is no stranger to winning in the United Arab Emirates, having claimed the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in 2014, beating Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson to the title by one stroke. He also finished in a share of third at the 2022 Ras Al Khaimah Classic.

“It will have been ten years since my victory in Abu Dhabi and it would be great to win again in the United Arab Emirates,” said Larrazábal. “I have really enjoyed my experiences in Ras Al Khaimah, and I’m sure we’ll get a warm welcome when we return in 2024.”

Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen will be teeing up in search of an eighth DP World Tour win and will arrive at Al Hamra buoyed by his tied fourth finish in the event earlier this year. The Dane has had consecutive winning years on the DP World Tour and he ended the season ninth on last year’s Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex, his second-highest career finish.

“I always enjoy starting my season in the UAE, so I’m excited to return to Ras Al Khaimah in January,” said Olesen.

“Al Hamra is a great venue and it’s a course I felt very comfortable on earlier this year. I’m looking forward to going back.”

Of the 50 players taking part in the DP World Tour Championship, one is under more pressure than maybe the other 49 put together. As things stood before this season-ending event, Rasmus Hojgaard was clinging to the 10th and final spot among players eligible to earn PGA Tour cards for 2024. Adding to that already considerable stress of maintaining his place on that list is the fact that Rasmus’ identical twin brother, Nicolai, has ensured his place across the Atlantic in 2024 through an accumulation of non-member FedEx Cup points over the course of the PGA Tour season about to finish.

If the pair are to continue their closely parallel paths through life and their chosen careers, Rasmus is going to have to step up. Which is exactly what he did Friday with a second-round 66 over the Earth Course at the Jumeirah Golf Estates. Three birdies, two eagles and only one dropped shot were the deviations from regulation figures in the Dane’s six-under-par effort, one that has him four under par at the halfway mark and in a tie for 21st place.

More importantly, the 22-year-old remains well in contention for one of those vital PGA Tour cards and, not incidentally, the $500,000 stipend that will go to each of the 10 who earn them. Nothing is certain, however. The man currently in 11th place, Yannick Paul, is six under par so far, although the German has a 76.88 points deficit to make up on Hojgaard.

Further complicating matters is the unlikely figure of Jens Dantorp. The Swede, who started this week in 49th place on the Race to Dubai (having played 31 events, more than anyone else in this week’s field) and 779.29 point behind Hojgaard, is tied with South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence, World No. 4 Viktor Hovland, France’s Antoine Rozner and local resident Tommy Fleetwood for second place after 36-holes on nine under par.

And the leader by two shots on 11 under par? Who else but Nicolai Hojgaard, who could do his brother a wee favor by maintaining that edge and making off with the 2,000 Race to Dubai points that could have provided another player with the opportunity to pass Hojgaard (R).

Whatever, much can still happen—and probably will. Who is heading to the U.S. and who will be consigned to at least another 12 months in the Old World clearly remains much in doubt.

“I have two choices given the situation I find myself in,” Rasmus said. “I can either cope with it or not. I came out today in a good mood. I knew I needed a low score that would carry me up the leaderboard. That Nicolai already has his card doesn’t really affect me. Obviously, I want to join him over there. It would make travelling and playing a lot more fun. But the pressure is not coming from there. It is more what I am demanding of myself. It is a big goal to make it onto the PGA Tour. And I’m in the middle of it now. We’ll just have to see how the next two days play out. I’ll be giving it everything I have.”

That much goes without saying, as does the fact that, with his brother playing for Europe at Marco Simone last September, Hojgaard was given an in-depth inside look into just what a Ryder Cup match is really like. Rasmus was there all week, his unofficial role being buggy driver for fellow Dane and European assistant captain Thomas Bjorn.

“I definitely feel a lot more prepared if I make it into the next team,” Hojgaard said. “I’ve seen it from the inside. It was such a great experience to feel somewhat a part of it. I think it helped Nicolai to have me there. But as much as he was nervous, I was even more. My role was just to keep him in good spirits.

“Obviously I spent a lot of time with Thomas,” Rasmus continued. “I saw and heard things I would never have thought of had I not been with him. But the highlight for me was the start of the week. I managed to sneak into the team room. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. It certainly added to my motivation to qualify for Bethpage in 2025.”

Ah, but all of that is for a more distant future. For now, Hojgaard has other, more pressing things on his mind. Some of which he is clearly trying not to think about.

“It’s too early for me to start imagining what it will be like to play full-time on the PGA Tour,” he said. “I can’t do that now. It will all come down to what happens on Sunday afternoon. I’m just happy to have played well today and kept myself in contention. I could easily be too far back. But I’m still in the tournament. It’s going to be an exciting weekend.”

For both of the twins.

Robert MacIntyre. DP World Tour

The final automatic spot on Luke Donald’s European team for the Ryder Cup showdown with the United States will come down to the final qualifying event — this weeks’ Omega European Masters ‚ with six players still in the running.

After finishing T-4 fourth place at the Czech Masters on Sunday, Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre holds a slender lead in the European Points List, narrowly increasing his lead over closest challenger Yannik Paul.

The Scot birdied his final hole to finish his week on 17-under, gaining 85.42 points in the Czech Republic to increase his total on the European Points List to 1828.99.

His top five at Albatross Golf Resort also helped to increase his advantage over Yannik Paul, who began his week just 90.67 points behind MacIntyre and finished one behind him in 10th place. It means Paul gained 50 points to up his tally to 1702.9, which leaves him 126.09 points adrift of the man who displaced him in the automatic spot with one week to go.

MacIntyre and Paul are two of six players in this week’s field that can end the week in Donald’s line-up. They all have necessary scenarios to make that happen, but Adrian Meronk, Victor Perez, Rasmus Hojgaard and Adrian Otaegui all have a mathematical chance of claiming that third and final place.

They will all tee up at Crans-sur-Sierre on Thursday knowing that the fate of their Ryder Cup place is in their hands, whether that is doing enough to qualify, or enough to impress Donald in the last event of the qualifying period.

Tommy Fleetwood, who is currently occupying the third spot on the World’s Points List, could have also qualified with a win but is not competing in Switzerland this week.

Scenarios: What each player needs to do to win

MacIntyre could still be caught even if he finishes second, so needs to win to absolutely guarantee his place, but only a top-three finish from fellow contenders will threaten his position.

Paul will qualifies if he wins. He would need to finish at least tied for third with two others, or better, to have a chance.

Meronk needs to finish in a tie for second with just one player or better to have a chance

Perez needs to finish in second place alone, or to win to have a chance

Hojgaard needs to win to have a chance

Otaegui needs to win to have a chance

European Points List
Player Points
Rory McIlroy (Q) 4033.5
Jon Rahm (Q) 3417.23
Robert MacIntyre 1828.99

Image supplied

Home favourite Rasmus Højgaard won Made in Himmerland 2023 in a six-hole play-off to become the tournament’s first Danish winner in its last-ever staging.

Højgaard held off Nacho Elvira after coming from seven shots behind to finish level with the Spaniard on 13 under par.

“I’m speechless at the moment,” Højgaard said afterwards. “To be fair, I didn’t think I’d end up in a play-off – it’s quite amazing. To win a home event, it’s amazing.

“It isn’t that long ago that I was one of those kids trying to get balls and signed gloves, so it’s cool to see them out here supporting us.

“This is better than I could ever dream of. We’ve wanted a Danish winner for so long now, so to be the first one to do it is amazing.”

It was Højgaard’s fourth DP World Tour win and extended his perfect record in play-offs, having won the 2019 AFRASIA BANK Mauritius Open and the following year’s ISPS HANDA UK Championship in the same manner.

Elvira began the day one shot clear of Robert MacIntyre, with Richie Ramsay a further shot back, but started with a three-putt bogey.

Kalle Samooja and Højgaard had both moved within a shot of the lead alongside Ramsay, Højgaard with four birdies in six holes on the front nine while Samooja birdied three of the first five.

MacIntyre birdied the fourth to take the lead as Elvira’s birdie putt lipped out as he was already shaping for a celebratory fist pump.

Both players birdied the par-five fifth but Højgaard and Ramsay came back at them.

Elvira saw another putt horseshoe out, a tremendous left-to-right effort from the fringe of the ninth green, where MacIntyre hit his approach to two feet to secure a birdie and a two-shot lead at the turn.

Elvira hit back at the tenth but when he bogeyed the 13th and MacIntyre ran up a triple after finding trouble down the right, Højgaard’s long birdie putt at the last saw him sharing the lead with Ramsay and Elvira.

Ramsay birdied the short 16th to go one shot ahead and MacIntyre and Elvira both bogeyed the 15th – though the Spaniard responded by birdieing the 16th and sneaking an 11-foot birdie putt at the next into the side of the hole.

Ramsay found the left-hand rough off the final tee and then put his second in the water hazard, the resulting double-bogey meaning a third-place finish at 12 under.

That opened the door to Elvira, whose tee shot split the fairway, but he went through the green and mishit his third from the fringe of a bunker, needing a long two-putt just to earn a playoff.

Højgaard got up and down from the bunker to par the first playoff hole and take it to a second, where Elvira did likewise.

Højgaard’s pin-high approach third time round gave him the advantage but his putt shaved the hole, and they shared the next two holes as well.

At the sixth extra hole, though, Elvira flew his second shot out of bounds into the practice grounds leaving Højgaard to two-putt for a victory which lifts him from 67th to 12th on the Race to Dubai Presented by Rolex.

Elvira had some consolation as he took one of them took the three Open Championship places on offer to the highest finishers not already exempt. The others went to Samooja and Marc Warren, who shared fourth place with MacIntyre and Alexander Björk on 11 under.

Matthew Southgate shot 61, the best round of the week, to finish nine under. The Englishman was threatening a 59 after a run of five straight birdies to the 17th but, needing another at the last, he instead sent his tee-shot into the water and made a bogey five.

Some patrons at this week’s PGA Championship must have been convinced they were seeing double on the fairways in upstate New York.

But they needn’t have worried. The answer is that, for the first time, identical twins Rasmus and Nicolai Højgaard were competing in the same major at Oak Hill.

The 22-year-olds from Denmark have collectively competed at five majors in the past — but never at the same time. And as they teed off in a chilly Rochester, New York, on Thursday, it was a proud moment for father Ole.

Proud Dad moment ??

Today Ole Højgaard will watch his twin sons Nicolai & Rasmus Højgaard play a major championship together for the first time.

#PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/s8fGo87sBh

“It means a lot for the family because they have been competing for a long time now and for them to be both be here at a Major now is a huge thing for us,” he told the DP World Tour.

Rasmus has picked up three professional titles so far in his career (2019 Mauritius Open, 2020 ISPS Handa UK Championship, Omega European Masters), while Nicolai has claimed the 2021 Italian Open and the 2022 Ras Al Khaimah Championship.

Nicolai Hojgaard gets a hug from brother Rasmus after winning the Italian Open in 2021. Luke Walker

Nicolai was also the European amateur champion in 2018, and the pair won the Eisenhower Trophy the same year.

Unfortunately, Rasmus will not play the weekend after finishing on nine-over on Friday on a tough, tough course, but Nicolai is in a healthy T-35 on three-over after a brilliant second-round 67 vaulted him up the leaderboard.

“We have been talking about the course a lot here,” Ole added. “It is a difficult course, it will be a test for both of them but they are both excited to be here. For me, I don’t just think it is a long hitters course. It is narrow and the rough is very tough.”

But just being here as a family is special for Ole. “Every time we are together it is like being home,” he said. “It is very nice having dinner together, having some chit chats and we have a lot of fun. It’s really nice to be together with them.”

Zander Lombard will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the 2023 Ras Al Khaimah Championship as he bids to claim his maiden DP World Tour victory.

The South African began day three trailing the halfway co-leaders by four shots but carded nine birdies in a sparkling 63 on Saturday to hit the front on 16-under.

The 28-year-old made a fast start at Al Hamra Golf Club on day three, picking up six shots on the front nine, with the highlight coming at the par-five eighth as he chipped in for a birdie at the second time of asking.

And he kept his foot on the gas on the trickier back nine, with birdies at the 12th, 17th and 18th taking Lombard to the top of the leaderboard.

Rasmus Højgaard was Lombard’s nearest challenger on 15-under after managing to save par at the last despite finding the water there.

The 21-year-old Dane, who made five birdies and one bogey in his third-round 68, is aiming to emulate his twin Nicolai, who won this event last year, and in doing so make the Højgaards the first brothers to win the same tournament on the DP World Tour.

England’s Daniel Gavins posted a spotless third-round 68 to sit in solo third on 14 under, one ahead of Frenchman Matthieu Pavon in fourth.

Defending champion Nicolai Højgaard was in a tie for fifth on 12 under alongside Alexander Björk.

Lombard flew out of the blocks, making birdies at the first, third and fourth to climb to 10-under.

He gave himself another good chance at the fifth but had to settle for a par there before bouncing back with a nine-foot birdie at the sixth.

After sending his tee-shot to around 20 feet at the par-three seventh, Lombard rolled in the birdie putt before making a mess of his chip shot from the rough near the eighth green.

He only managed to nudge his ball forward by a few yards but made no mistake with his second effort, chipping in for a bonus birdie.

Lombard’s next birdie arrived at the 12th, as he rolled in from long range, before a brilliant par save from 10 feet on the 14th kept his card clean.

After going close at the 16th, Lombard chipped in again on the 17th from over the back of the green to take the outright lead on 15-under.

And he sent his approach at the last to around seven feet to give himself a good eagle chance there but had to settle for a closing birdie.

Lombard was thrilled with his day’s work, saying: “It feels good. I did a lot of things really good. Just kept it steady, kept it solid and managed to hole a few putts and get some good momentum going.

“Nine-under par, you don’t shoot that every day but I felt solid straight out the blocks — I started birdie-par-birdie — and I just kept the mistakes off the card and that’s the key to a good round.”

Speaking about the prospect of entering the DP World Tour winner’s circle for the first time more than 10 years after making his debut, he said: “I’ve knocked on a lot of doors so it would be good to get over the line, but we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”

Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard will make a welcome return to Al Hamra Golf Club in February as he aims to defend his Ras Al Khaimah Championship title

The 21-year-old will be joined by 2022 Ras Al Khaimah Classic champion Ryan Fox and twin brother Rasmus for the $2 million DP World Tour event on February 2-5.

RELATED: Ras Al Khaimah Championship returns to DP World Tour schedule
Danish delight as Højgaard claims Ras Al Khaimah title

The Dane battled to his second DP World Tour title at last season’s tournament, winning by four strokes from Jordan Smith as he carded a four-under final round.

As Højgaard wobbled during the last day at Al Hamra, Smith moved two strokes ahead with six to play. But the youngster kept his cool and finished with three birdies and an eagle to seal the famous victory.

The tournament will be the last of the ‘UAE Swing’ series of events at the start of the year. It follows on from the Hero Cup — a new team match play event — and the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and Dubai Desert Classic, the first two Rolex Series events of the 2023 season.

“It’s always nice having the opportunity to defend a title and I’m really looking forward to returning to Al Hamra next year,” said Højgaard. “It was a great final-day battle with Jordan, so to fight back the way I did on the back nine and win by four shots was really satisfying.

“It’s a great venue and the course really suits my eye, so hopefully I can feed off some good memories and have another strong week. It’ll be a great finish to the run of events we have in the UAE at the start of the year.”

Three-time DP World Tour winner Rasmus, Nicolai’s identical twin brother, will be lining up once again alongside compatriot Thomas Bjørn, who famously captained Europe to Ryder Cup victory at Le Golf National in 2018.

New Zealand’s Fox, who won the Ras Al Khaimah Classic as part of a double-header at the venue earlier this year, will be looking for a similar bright start to the season as he went on to have a stellar campaign in 2022 following his triumph in RAK. He finished second to Rory McIlroy on the DP World Tour Rankings.

By Matt Smith
Rasmus Hojgaard saw his record 36-hole advantage wiped out at the French Open ion Saturday before he bravely fought back to remain in the driving seat for a wire-to-wire victory.

The 21-year-old Dane suufered a quintuple-bogey eight at the par three second hole at Le Golf National.

The three-time DP World Tour winner carried a six-stroke lead into the weekend in France, but things with horribly awry early on as he found the water three times on the tricky second hole at the 2018 Ryder Cup venue.

He sank a 14-foot putt for an eight at the par three and when he followed that up with a bogey at the par five third, Hojgaard looked down and out, six-over par through the opening three holes. But he delighted the fans with a battling comeback, carding five birdies in the final 13 holes to limit the damage to a three-over 74.

That kept him top of the pile on 12-under, one clear of South Africa’s George Coetzee, who signed for a four-under 68 as he targets a sixth DP World Tour victory.

Thomas Pieters, a winner already this season at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, moved himself within touching distance of a seventh career title with a five-under 66, and he was joined on 10-under by Frenchman Paul Barjon whose third-round 70 kept his dreams alive of a debut victory in his home open.

Rasmus Hojgaard: “To be fair I was pretty far down mentally after that start, it was tough but I had to try tell myself that I’ve been playing good the past few days and I shouldn’t let it bother me too much. I just tried my best to stay in there and try hit some good shots.

“I was very proud of myself to be fair. It was obviously an annoying finish with a bogey on 18, but it was a tough grind. I’m proud that I stayed in there and made a few birdies along the way.

“It’s obviously not the Saturday I wanted but at the same time I’m just happy that I stayed in there and I managed to make some birdies and still have the lead, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

By Matt Smith
Danish star Rasmus Hojgaard continued to rip up Le National on Day 2 the French Open to open up a six-shot lead after hitting a recond 36-hole 15-under. The Dane six-under 65 on Friday to his stunning opening 62.

The 21-year-old is aiming to become the first Danish winner in the 116-year history of Continental Europe’s oldest national open, and he took another large step towards a fourth DP World Tour title with a domineering performance at the challenging 2018 Ryder Cup venue.

Playing alongside his compatriot and 2023 Ryder Cup vice-captain Thomas Bjorn, Hojgaard’s round caught fire at the 15th with the first of three successive birdies, before picking up four shots on the back nine with just a single bogey on the fifth.

His 36-hole halfway total of 127 strokes is the tournament’s lowest since becoming a Tour event in 1972 and moved him six clear of Frenchman Paul Barjon, whose three-under 68 delighted the crowds late in the day as he moved into outright second spot on his debut at his national open.

South Africa’s George Coetzee was a shot further back on eight-under after a five-under 66, while Rasmus Højgaard’s playing partner Antoine Rozner boosted his own hopes of a home victory with a 66 which moved him alongside Alexander Björk on seven-under.

“The course still plays tricky, I just played very well again today, I hit a lot of greens, gave myself a lot of chances and kept the bogeys away more or less, so it’s all good,” said Hojgaard. “Over the last few tournaments I’ve been making a lot of birdies, just had too many bogeys or worse. I knew there was a lot of good stuff in there, I just needed to make it happen over four rounds so and far I’ve done that.

“You’ve got a few options out there, there are a few tricky tee shots where you have to stand up and hit a proper shot, and I enjoy that test.

“I’m not going to change much the next couple of days, it’s been working fine so far so I need to go out there and be patient, limit the mistakes and make a few birdies. It’s my fifth week in a row so I’m going to relax now for the afternoon.”

By Matt Smith
It was a Danish delight for Rasmus Hojgaard at the French Open as he equalled the course record at Le Golf National with a nine-under par opening round 62 which featured 10 birdies.

The 21-year-old already has three DP World Tour titles to his name, but has yet to win in the 2022 season having claimed a victory in each of the last three campaigns.

Hojgaard, whose twin brother Nicolai won a second DP World Tour title of his own earlier this year at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship in the UAE, enjoyed a strong finish to last week’s Italian Open — carding a final round 66 at Marco Simone Golf Club — and he carried that form into this week’s event at the 2018 Ryder Cup venue.

He birdied four of his first five holes — his only dropped shot of the day coming in between at the second hole – en route to a five under front nine of 31, and he soared into the lead courtesy of four birdies on the way home for a nine-under total.

Sweden’s Alexander Bjork sits second after signing for a seven-under 64, while Frenchman Paul Barjon was a shot further back on six-under, the 30-year-old playing his home open for the first time.

“It’s not that easy but today was very good,” said Hojgaard. “To be fair I didn’t feel like I was that good off the tee but I felt like my approach play today was very good, alongside a very good putter — I holed a few long putts and you have to do that to shoot nine-under.”
