For the second straight week on the PGA Tour, there was an emotional scene on the 18th hole as the winner claimed his prize. Seven days earlier at the World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico, it was Erik van Rooyen tearfully grabbing the title in honor of a college teammate fighting terminal cancer.

This Sunday at Butterfield Bermuda Championship, it was Camilo Villegas, a 41-year-old from Colombia with limited status on the PGA Tour, earning his fifth career tour win, but first since the 2014 Wyndham Championship. It was also the first win since his 22-month-old daughter, Mia, tragically died in 2020 from brain cancer.

“I’ve got my little one up there watching it, smiling,” Villegas said. “She’s where she needs to be after a long fight.”

Prior to the WWT Championship, Villegas was 223rd on the FedEx Cup points list, but a T-2 finish (after a Sunday 66) jumped him to 147th. Needing to get inside the top 125 for full playing privileges in 2024—he has been playing on past champion’s status the last few years—Villegas was desperate for another good finish in Bermuda.

He got it. Starting the final round at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton one-shot back of Alex Noren, Villegas made four birdies in his first seven holes to wrestle away the lead. He then held off Noren with two more birdies on the final four holes to finish with a Sunday 65 and a 24-under 260 total.

With the win comes full status on tour through 2025. It also comes a $1.17 million first-place prize money payout from a $6.5 million overall purse.

Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer who made the cut.

Keyur Khamar

You’ve likely heard there’s a lot of money to be made in professional golf nowadays. But precisely how much money can be made—especially compared to the past—is staggering.

The PGA Tour boasted a year-long purse of $421,800,000 last season through its 47-tournament schedule. That is an eye-popping figure, and some $30 million more than the previous campaign’s total. However, that $421 million-and-change figure is trumped by this year’s projected purse, which is expected to be increased by $140 million. We say expected since the four major championships have yet to release the purses up for grabs at their respective events. Assuming the majors stay at last year’s figures—and, more than likely, those figures will be increased—the tour’s total purse for the 2022-’23 season will cross the $563 million barrier.

The tour’s new elevated events are a major catalyst for this bump, with the events in question boasting anywhere from $15 to $20 million in winnings. This year’s Players Championship will hand out $25 million in earnings, a jump of $5 million from 2022, by far the biggest purse on tour. Well, for a regular season event, at least; because the FedEx Cup and Tour Championship are now one and the same, there will be $75 million on the line at East Lake when the circuit concludes its season in Atlanta.

These figures do not include other bonus pools, chiefly the tour’s new Player Impact Program. The PIP bonus pool was instituted in 2021 to reward players who boosted engagement and publicity for the tour. Ostensibly a response to some of the lucrative deals rumoured to be coming from the then-Premier Golf League, the inaugural program somewhat backfired; five of the 10 winners in 2021—Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Bubba Watson—ultimately left the tour for LIV Golf. However, improvements to the PIP were announced at this year’s Tour Championship to broaden its scope. After spreading out $40 million to those on last year’s list, the 2022 PIP pool has increased to $100 million in payouts. The list has also doubled from 10 players to 20.

What is spurring these prize increases? It would be easy to nod to the advent of the aforementioned LIV Golf, and certainly the Saudi-backed circuit has played some part in the tour’s elevated event series. Conversely, many of the increases are a result of the tour’s new media deal, which began in 2022 and run through 2030 with CBS, NBC and ESPN. The deal reportedly gives the tour close to $700 million per year. Due to the nature of how the PGA Tour is run—it is listed as a 501(c)(6) non-profit—the tour is obligated to flow the money back to the players, while allowing expenses of the company to be paid and also to accumulate a reasonable reserve of funds.

Of course, we’d be remiss in not mentioning the money available at LIV Golf. This year LIV is handing out more than $400 million in 14 events, up from $225 million during its inaugural season. That does not include the signing bonuses some members received for defecting to the league, with some paydays estimated to be in the nine figures.

Still, the vault in financials remains jarring. For context, the PGA Tour’s $563 million projected total is more than double the tour’s total purse just 10 years ago ($260 million in 2013) and more than $500 million from 1993 ($53,203,611). For those wondering, the tour’s purse records date back to 1938, which saw a total purse of $158,000 spread across 38 events (the equivalent of $3,352,401.42 in 2023 dollars).

Brooks Koepka already scored the largest pay day in golf this year when he won the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in June and banked the $2.16 million first prize. Yet we get the feeling the 28-year-old former All-American at Florida State isn’t going to be disappointing with only making $1.98 million on Sunday for his victory at the 100th PGA Championship, his third career major championship title and the third he’s won in his last six major starts dating back to the 2017 U.S. Open. With the win, Koepka is just the fifth player to win the U.S. Open and PGA in the same calendar year, joining Gene Sarazen (192), Ben Hogan (1948), Jack Nicklaus (1980) and Tiger Woods (2000).

This year the PGA of America bumped up the overall prize money for its oldest event from $10.5 million to an $11 million purse. Suffice it to say, the folks at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis are more than happy for the association’s largesse.

Curious how much everybody made for their efforts in the year’s final men’s major? Here’s the breakdown for the prize money every player who made the cut earned this week at Bellerive.

ST. LOUIS—The Wanamaker Trophy is one of the biggest trophies in golf. What winning it does to the back account ain’t small, either.

The PGA of America announced this year’s winner at the PGA Championship will take home $1.98 million from Bellerive. That’s about $10,000 more than Justin Thomas earned capturing last year’s title at Quail Hollow. And finishing second in St. Louis ain’t too shabby, with the silver medal getting $1.18 million.

The top 24 finishes will make six digits. The total purse is $11 million, a raise of $500,000 from 2017.

1. $1,980,000
2. $1,188,000
3. $748,000
4. $528,000
5. $450,500
6. $380,000
7. $343,650
8. $319,600
9. $295,600
10. $272,300
11. $251,590
12. $232,400
13. $214,800
14. $199,050
15. $184,280
16. $170,700
17. $161,000
18. $152,000
19. $143,000
20. $134,000
21. $125,000
22. $116,000
23. $107,000
24. $100,000
25. $93,000

The winner’s payout matches what Patrick Reed earned at Augusta National for his green jacket, while Brooks Koepka cashed in a cool $2.16 million for his feats at Shinnecock.

By Stephen Hennessey
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered how tour-player prize money gets paid out after tournaments. Thanks to an unfortunate situation involving Tommy Fleetwood on the eve of the PGA Championship, we now have somewhat of an answer. Although Fleetwood’s team, now, are the ones really looking for answers.

Thanks to a tweet from the user @GregThornerGolf, who is a golf instructor in New England, he alerted us to the fact that his friend, who is apparently also named Tommy Fleetwood, received the 29-year-old Englishman’s payout from his T-12 showing at Carnoustie.

We didn’t know whether to believe this at first—so we went to the source. Fleetwood’s wife, Clare, confirmed in an email to Golf Digest that this situation, is, in fact, true. And Fleetwood’s team is now dealing with getting the funds back. Now we know: yes, tour pros receive a direct deposit like the rest of us working folk. And yes, even the world’s best players have issues when it comes to their paychecks.

Here’s the look at the other Tommy Fleetwood’s Wells Fargo bank account.

No joke, a friend received Tommy Fleetwood’s Open Championship winnings in his bank account last weekend!! They have the same name and he was a PGA pro but still, how does this happen? Didn’t believe him until I saw it…good thing he is an honest guy! pic.twitter.com/bE534xfYDV

— #Break30 Golf Short Game School (@GregThornerGolf) August 8, 2018

How could Tommy Fleetwood’s winnings from the Open Championship have found their way into a random guy’s bank account? We don’t have an answer to that. And apparently neither does Fleetwood’s team. As Fleetwood’s wife described to us: A “huge clerical error by the European tour accounts department.” [sik] We’d have to agree! Any amount of money would be a lot. But more than $154,000? That’s a ton of money, even if you’re an elite tour player like Fleetwood. Imagine if this was, say, Francesco Molinari’s $1.89 million for winning at Carnoustie? Or Brooks Koepka’s $2.16 million? Hell, the next FedEx Cup winner, who will take home more than $10 million? Insanity.

We’re sure the European Tour will make good on this. As for the other Tommy Fleetwood, we admire his honesty about this. This story might lead a lot of golfers to ask themselves the question: What would you do?

UPDATE: It appears Fleetwood himself got a kick out of the situation as well.

Hey @darrenrovell tweeted about me !! I’ve made it!!! ? https://t.co/h6aXBgbdna

— Tommy Fleetwood (@TommyFleetwood1) August 8, 2018

Once he got paid, that is.

The final playing of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational ends an era on the PGA Tour. Firestone Country Club has hosted a PGA Tour event for 65 years. Only three courses have had a longer run—Augusta National, home of the Masters Tournament, Pebble Beach Golf Links and Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth.

Justin Thomas, the final winner at Firestone will have fond memories of the famed layout, of course. He’ll also a significantly larger bank account. The champ bring home $1.7 million, just a little less than the winner next week at the PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club.

Curious about the breakdown? Here’s how much each every player competing at Firestone made after four rounds in Akron.

Dustin Johnson makes the game look easy. Even too easy. Just as he did at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January, when he won by eight strokes, and the FedEx St. Jude Classic in June, where he won by six, Johnson cruised to another victory on Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open, his third of the 2017-’18 season. After starting the round in a four-way tie for the lead, DJ sprinted out front early at Glen Abbey Golf Club outside Toronto, making birdies on the first two holes. And despite a weather delay that could have stopped his momentum, he returned when the skies cleared and went on to post a closing 66, claiming a three-stroke win over Whee Kim and Byeong Hun An. Johnson now has 19 career PGA Tour titles, with ninth of them won by three strokes or more.

For his efforts, Johnson pocketed another $1.16 million. How much did the rest of the field bank? Here’s a look at the money earned by every player who made the cut at Glen Abbey this weekend.

AUGUSTA, Ga.—Win the Masters, get a green jacket. That is the tournament’s ultimate, and cherished, prize. What the win will do to the back account ain’t too shabby, either.

Augusta National Golf Club announced the payouts for the 2018 Masters Saturday. Similar to last year’s tournament, the winner will take home a staggering $1.98 million. And though coming in second can be agonizing on one’s psyche, earning a paycheck of $1.18 million should alleviate that pain. Same as the bronze medal winner ($748,000) and fourth-place finisher ($528,000).

In total, $11 million will be awarded at this year’s tournament, with the top 24 finishers earning six figures. The $11 million is one of the largest payouts in golf. Only the U.S. Open, with a $12 million payout and $2.16 million winner’s share, has a bigger purse.

NurPhoto

By Alex Myers
Kevin Na couldn’t quite track down Bubba Watson during the final round of the 2018 Genesis Open, but his T-2 was his best PGA Tour finish in more than two years and his ninth career runner-up. More impressively — and perhaps, surprisingly — the $663,600 check Na took home from Riviera pushed him past the $25 million mark in lifetime PGA Tour earnings. Not too shabby for someone with one career win. Yep, that’s one win and more than $25 million in on-course earnings. Talk about getting a lot of bang for your buck. Or, buck for your bang, in this case.

It got us thinking if there are other names on the PGA Tour career earnings list who would cause a similar reaction — and of course, the answer was yes. In an age where the average win reaps well more than a $1 million payday, there are plenty of tour pros — from stars to journeymen — who have amassed small fortunes playing golf (Thanks, Tiger). Here are some of the most surprising, not in order of how unexpected their totals are, but how much they’ve made.

Matt Kuchar ($42,402,743): Kuch has long held the reputation as a human ATM, but more than $42 MILLION for someone with seven PGA Tour titles?! That’s a lot of big trips to the bank. Also, at No. 13 on the career money list, he’s the highest-ranked player without a major championship.

Luke Donald ($35,930,932): Similar to Kuchar, Donald has enjoyed a great career that has included multiple Ryder Cup appearances, and unlike Kuchar, a stint at No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking. However, considering the last of his five PGA Tour titles came nearly six years ago, the Brit still landing at 18th on the career money list — the only golfer other than Kuchar to crack the top 20 despite never winning a major — was a bit of an eye-opener. Not as much as the rest of these names, though …

Charles Howell III ($34,379,173): Chucky Three Sticks has been stuck on two PGA Tour wins for more than a decade, but that hasn’t kept him from raking in cash at a feverish pace. Since that last win at Riviera in 2007, he’s made more than $20 million. Pretty good for someone who has only played in five majors in the past five seasons.

Rory Sabbatini ($30,430,256): Thirty MILLION buys a lot of those silly cowboy hats.

Jerry Kelly ($28,962,248): The Wisconsin native won three times on the PGA Tour, but was a consistent — and busy — performer for two decades who racked up more than 600 starts. “It’s pretty good for a grinder,” Kelly said. Yes it is, Jerry. Yes it is.

Kevin Na ($25,232,107): No one has a better ratio of millions of dollars made to tournament wins. No one.

John Senden ($21,383,767): The Aussie has always been known for his accurate iron play, but that’s a lot of dough for someone with two PGA Tour titles — the last of which came by one shot over, you guessed it, Kevin Na.

Billy Mayfair ($20,303,642): Probably known best for being that guy with the cut putting stroke or the guy who beat Tiger Woods in a PGA Tour playoff, Mayfair had five career PGA Tour wins. Still, cracking the $20 million barrier is impressive for someone whose last victory came two decades ago. And he’s still pulling in paychecks on the PGA Tour Champions, finishing T-2 at the Chubb Classic last weekend.

Brian Davis ($13,323,356): We end with Davis because he’s made the most money of anyone on the PGA Tour with zero victories. Davis edged out Briny Baird ($13,251,178) for this honor. Or is it a distinction? Nah, we’re sticking with honour. Forget about never getting into the winner’s circle — or that unfortunate penalty in a playoff at Hilton Head in 2010 — making more than $13 million playing golf seems like a pretty sweet deal.

Related: I bought shares of a tour pro for a year — here’s what happened

The winner of the claret jug at Royal Birkdale later this month will receive the biggest first-place check in Open Championship history, R&A officials announced on Wednesday upon revealing the purse and prize breakdown.

The champion golfer of the year will earn $1,845,000 from an overall purse of $10,250,000. Second-place will earn you $1,067,000.

In releasing information on the purse, the R&A said that for the first time it will award all prize money in American dollars rather than British pounds.

“We are operating in an increasingly global marketplace and have made the decision to award the prize fund in U.S. dollars in recognition of the fact that it is the most widely adopted currency for prize money in golf,” said R&A CEO Martin Slumbers in a press release.

Converting from pounds to dollars, the overall purse for the Open Championship at Royal Troon in 2016 and St. Andrews in 2015 was $9.3 million and $9.2 million, respectively. Henrik Stenson earned the equivalent of $1,549,590 for his victory a year ago, and Zach Johnson took home $1,794,690 for his playoff triumph at the Home of Golf.

The British Open purse moves the tournament just slightly ahead of the $10 million given out at the Masters in April, although Sergio Garcia earned more for the victory ($1,980,000) than the Open winner will received. The PGA Championship also gave out $10 million in 2016 with $1.8 million going to Jimmy Walker. The PGA of America has yet to announce what the 2017 purse will be when the event is played at Quail Hollow in Charlotte.

The U.S. Open’s purse bump to $12 million overall at Erin Hills (with $2.16 million to Brooks Koepka) made it the richest of the four majors.
