Nelly Korda

By Keely Levins
A field of 156 golfers has descended upon North Carolina to compete at the US Women’s Open for a record $10 million purse, and an unprecedented $1.8 million winner’s cheque. As the 77th playing of the championship nears, we’ve pored over the field and selected five players we’re going to be keeping an eye on at Pine Needles.

Nelly Korda

Mike Ehrmann

This will be the first time the No. 2 player in the world will have teed it up in a tournament since the first week of February. Her season came to an unexpected halt when she was diagnosed with a blood clot and had to undergo surgery to have it removed. Though it’s difficult to predict how a player will compete when coming back from surgery, one has to think that a competitor like Korda wouldn’t come back if she wasn’t ready.

Lydia Ko

Harry How

Ko has been on the leaderboard in several events this season. She won Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio and has had four other top-15 finishes in 2022. She’s No. 1 in strokes gained/putting — which will serve her well on the quick, firm, major-championship greens. The former World No. 1 has won two majors, but neither is a US Women’s Open. Winning one for the first time would be a fitting end to her six-year major drought.

Lexi Thompson

Sarah Stier

At Olympic Club in 2021, Thompson almost won the US Women’s Open. It was painfully close, which means she’s plenty ready to have another chance at the trophy. She’s also a better player now than she was then. There’s been one consistent issue in Thompson’s game: her putting. That is, until this year. Season-long stats suggest the 27-year-old has figured out how to putt as she’s ranked fourth in strokes gained/putting for 2022. Thompson has been playing in US Women’s Opens since she was 12. She’s always had the power — ranked ninth in driving distance, averaging 275 yards off the tee. Combine that with her newfound putting abilities, and she’s a threat at Pine Needles.

Jin Young Ko

Sarah Stier

The No. 1 player in the world is a must-watch at all majors, much less any tournament. Ko has won 13 times on the LPGA Tour and she’s only 27. She has tied and set records for number of rounds in the 60s, most holes without a bogey, and consecutive greens hit. Sounds like a pretty good combination for winning a US Women’s Open, right? If the South Korean were to win, it’d be her third major victory, but her first US Women’s Open win.

Ayaka Furue

Sean M Haffey

If you were watching the Bank of Hope LPGA Match Play, you’ve become familiar with Akaya Furue. She was in the final match against Eun-Hee Ji, and ultimately lost. But Furue, an LPGA Tour rookie, is positioned well at Pine Needles because of her driving accuracy. Just as Annika Sorenstam who won at Pine Needles in 1996: driving accuracy is going to be the key at Pine Needles. Furue is ranked 11th on the LPGA Tour in driving accuracy, hitting 83 per cent of fairways in the 2022 season. Coming out of the Match Play, where she played seven matches, she’s likely fatigued. But momentum is powerful, and after getting close to her first win in Las Vegas, she might be ready to become the next unexpected major champion.

By Matt Smith
There are weeks in every golfer’s career that stand out from the rest. None come bigger than this week for amateur Malak Bouraeda, as the Moroccan is set to become the first Arab golfer to compete at the US Women’s Open at Pine Hills from June 2-5.

Malak sealed her spot in the most dramatic of fashions last week as she won her first ever medal at the Colorado Golf Association’s US Open Qualifier at the Walnut Creek Golf Preserve in Westminster -— securing the only spot available in the event.

Next stop is now Southern Pines in North Carolina, to rub shoulders with the likes of Nelly Korda, Michelle Wie West and Annika Sorenstam at the major.

Golf Digest Middle East caught up with University of Colorado Boulder senior Malak ahead of her momentous, historic week as she looks to inspire the next generation of Arab hopefuls.

Q. It has been quite a journey, can you tell us how you managed to clinch your spot and what it means to you?
A. I battled hard at my qualifying site with 40 players vying for the No. 1 spot. It meant everything for me to win that qualifier and make it to Pine Needles in my first US Women’s Open. It is truly a dream come true and I am very excited to see what unfolds this week!

Q. There must be an immense sense of pride at your achievement for Morocco and the Arab world.
A. It is a huge honour to represent the Moroccan flag and the Arab world at large. I am hoping this achievement will inspire the next generation of female golfers.

Q. What are your expectations now you are in the field alongside the best players in the world?
A. I am planning to play my best and let the chips fall where they may. I have been working very hard and continue to prepare . I want to make the cut, but if I don’t, I know I would have given it my best. Either way, I will enjoy my time this week and take what comes as it comes and not get too ahead of myself. I think that approaching this big stage in that way will be beneficial in making it a memorable week.

Q. What is the next step in your career?
A. As of now, I am returning to the University of Colorado to get my Masters degree and finish my eligibility. After that, I will look into turning pro.

Q. Do you think you can be an inspiration to help motivate other Arab golfers make it to the big stage?
A.That is a huge goal of mine and I feel like it is something that I strive to do — inspire the next generation and show them that anything is truly possible. I feel the support of not only Morocco but the Arab world as well which has been very moving and motivating for me.
