Adam Scott has been named chairman of the PGA Tour Player Advisory Council.

Scott, 42, was appointed to the position following a vote from the tour’s membership. Scott will serve as the chairman for 2023 and will replace Charley Hoffman as one of the player directors on the tour’s policy board. Scott beat out Maverick McNealy and Kevin Streelman for the role.

Interestingly, the appointment comes on the one-year anniversary of Scott acknowledging his interests in LIV Golf at the 2022 Genesis Invitational. “Depending what your goals are in golf, I think [LIV Golf’s] schedule is very appealing,” Scott said last year. “From that side of things, I would consider doing that, for sure. From a lifestyle side of things, yes.”

Later, Scott would add: “Well, when there’s only a proposed 14 events, let’s say, and you might pick to play some other events, there seems to be time for a legitimate off-season. I think that’s really missed on the PGA Tour from all aspects but certainly from the top players. I think we would all like to see a break, and a break where you’re not penalised for taking a break. I think that’s one of the big things.”

The PAC advises and consults with the PGA Tour policy board and commissioner Jay Monahan on issues affecting the tour. Other player directors are Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, Webb Simpson and Peter Malnati.

Scott has made over 370 career starts on the PGA Tour and boasts 14 wins, highlighted by his triumph at the 2013 Masters. He is fifth on the tour’s all-time career earnings list at just over $60 million.

Scott is in this week’s Genesis Invitational field, making just his third start this season. He won the event in 2020.

Rory McIlroy has long been one of golf’s most-respected players and often a voice of reason within the sport. Now his input could have even greater impact.

On Tuesday, the PGA Tour announced that McIlroy has been elected by his peers as chairman of the tour’s Player Advisory Council for 2021, beating out Russell Knox and Kevin Streelman.

McIlroy, 31, who counts four major championships among his 18 PGA Tour titles, will serve a one-year term in the role then succeed Jordan Spieth as a player director on the tour’s Policy Board for three years beginning in 2022. When McIlroy assumes the role of player director next year, it will mark the first time that an international player has served on the tour’s Policy Board since its inception in 1969.

The role of the 16-member PAC is to consult and advise the tour’s Policy Board and PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan on matters concerning the tour.

Last November, the tour announced that the 2020 PAC would extend its term through to the end of this year because of the role it played during the COVID-19 pandemic. The other members of the PAC in addition to Knox, Streelman and McIlroy are Ryan Armour, Paul Casey, David Hearn, Harry Higgs, Billy Horschel, Zach Johnson, Anirban Lahiri, Peter Malnati, Ryan Palmer, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Harold Varner III and Johnson Wagner.

When Billy Hurley III released a mock attack ad against Jordan Spieth in the closing stretch of both men’s pursuit of the chairmanship of the PGA Tour Player Advisory Council, two questions jumped to mind: What ever inspired Hurley to do so? And what exactly does the Player Advisory Council do?

Hurley elaborated on both as a guest on a bonus episode of the Golf Digest Podcast. His hilarious takedown of Spieth was the talk of social media earlier in the week, revealing Hurley’s underrated talent as a deadpan comic, and underscoring that even as one of the game’s biggest stars, Spieth can clearly take a joke.

“Yeah, I texted [Spieth] about it and he just laughed and said ‘That’s great with me,’” Hurley said on the Podcast. “I had no intention of really swaying the votes. We just figured we can make this really funny, and we obviously did.”

For those of you who don’t know, I am running against @JordanSpieth for Chairman of the @PGATOUR Player Advisory Council.

The voting for PAC chairmanship closed on Tuesday and when we spoke to Hurley that evening, he hadn’t heard the results. (Update: Golf Channel reports on Wednesday evening that Spieth was elected chairman over Hurley). Already a member of the 16-player PAC, he explained what role the organisation plays, what issues its confronting most these days, and how he remains upbeat during a difficult start to 2018.

By Stephen Hennessey
Many golf fans have probably never heard of the PGA Tour Player Advisory Council—the panel of tour players that represent their fellow pros and assist the PGA Tour Policy Board in making decisions with commissioner Jay Monahan. Thanks to this brilliant ad produced by Billy Hurley III, who is running against Jordan Spieth for the chairman of the PAC, everyone is now aware. And likely, all-in on Hurley’s candidacy.

Obviously, Spieth is one of the most popular players in the game—not just with fans but his fellow players. So Hurley has a tough fight ahead with the 24-year-old “Golden Child” in Tuesday’s election. Conversely, Hurley might’ve swayed some votes with this hilarious video he shared on social media on Monday.

Fabulous work by Hurley, the winner of the 2016 Quicken Loans Invitational, who served five years in the U.S. Navy after graduating from the Naval Academy. You know even Spieth cracked up after watching this.

The rest of the 2018 PGA Tour Player Advisory Council, which was named in January, includes Justin Thomas, Steve Stricker, Paul Casey, Roberto Castro, Ben Crane, Andres Gonzales, James Hahn, J.J. Henry, Matt Kuchar, Geoff Ogilvy, Rod Pampling, Harold Varner III, Johnson Wagner and Tim Wilkinson.
