The professional golfers whose livelihoods have been most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic are those who play at levels below the PGA and Korn Ferry tours. They’ve had nowhere to play, and the PGA Tour has a plan to take some steps to make up for that.

As first reported by Golf Channel, the tour told players this week that, starting in August, it will stage a series of eight tournaments for members of PGA Tour Latinoamerica, Canada’s Mackenzie Tour and PGA Tour China. The schedules for all three circuits for the rest of 2020 were eliminated because of the coronavirus.

The upcoming tournaments will be 54 holes, with 144-player fields and minimum $100,000 purses, with a winner’s share of $16,000. The fields will be comprised of international exempt members, Korn Ferry Tour players, sponsor’s exemptions and top performers from previous events.

“For those players who are able to play, we believe this series will be a great opportunity to play golf in a PGA Tour-sanctioned competition without taking away any of the performance benefits of your respective Tours,” Scott Pritchard, executive director of the Mackenzie Tour, wrote in a memo to players, as reported by Golf Channel.

The tournament series begins with three events in Georgia, starting on Aug. 5, and continues for one week in Auburn, Ala., followed by three events in Florida, and then a final tournament whose location has yet to be decided.

Arie Irawan, a rising star on the PGA Tour China circuit, was found dead in his hotel room on Sunday. The PGA Tour confirmed the 28-year-old had passed on the Chinese resort island of Hainan.

Irawan was competing at the Sanya Championship, where he had missed the cut.

“We are greatly saddened to have to report the news that a member of the PGA TOUR Series-China family, Arie Irawan of Malaysia, passed away this morning,” read a statement from PGA Tour China. “Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

According to the tour, Irawan appeared to die of natural causes, although the official coroner’s report has not been completed.

Arie turned professional in 2013. He won two events on the Asian Development Tour in 2015, with two more victories coming on his home Professional Golf of Malaysia Tour. His golf career was briefly sidetracked in 2016 when he was involved in an accident on a moped and sidelined for several months. His wife Marina, who he married last May, would often work as his caddie.

“Sometimes life is just cruel -RIP Mr Arie Irawan,” wrote Australian pro Scott Hend on Twitter. “Fenix XCell brand ambassador and all round good guy. Taken way to early. You will be missed. May you make everything wherever you go.”

Officials cancelled the final round of the tournament, making it a 54-hole event, out of respect to the family and, officials said.
