The 2018 Masters champion, Patrick Reed, carded an impressive three-under-par round of 68, bringing his total to eight under par and positioning himself well heading into the weekend.

Reed shared insights into his round, reflected on his performance throughout the year, and discussed his experiences playing in Asia.

Q. Patrick, you were three under par today how would you summarise your round?

It was a frustrating day at three under. It’s just kind of one of those days were energy levels a little low, couldn’t really get around on a lot of iron shots a lot of tee shots were blocked a little bit. Yeah, I hit a lot of balls inside 20ft just didn’t make anything and finally made that one on the last which will obviously make it feel a little better for the day.

Yeah, it was just kind of one of those days it could have been really low but at the same time because of some of the tee shots I hit it could have gone the other way. I feel like you are always going to have one of those rounds throughout a tournament, good thing is I got that out of the way today and was able to ride the ship today and get in the house but I feel like the game is where it needs to be, the game feels good, energy levels were a little low this morning but besides that I gave myself a lot of looks but my putter was a little Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde today.

Q. You said before that the heat reminds you of Texas a little bit, do you think you are used to this heat then?

You are never used to it! This is definitely a different heat, today it was sticky. I almost feel like the mornings here are worse temperature wise than the afternoon, even though in the afternoons it says it is a little hotter when there’s zero wind and it’s stagnant you are getting it from both sides, you are getting it from the top and you are getting it from the ground just the humidity getting you so yeah it’s hot today and you have to stay on top of the hydration and I feel like we have done a good job so far on that, you can’t drink enough, you can’t rest enough to get ready for the weekend.

Q. You have played with some incredible names in your career. This week you’ve been paired with Asian Tour legend Anirban Lahiri and former US Open champion Graeme McDowell, what’s that been like?

It’s awesome! I’ve played a lot with them recently especially with being at LIV. It’s always good to play with those boys, they will always fight no matter what and no matter how bad the days going and that’s what you want to do you want to play with guys who are always fighting. It was awesome to watch Lahiri birdie the last two to probably make it on the number and Gmac was just kind of cruising, so it’s always nice playing with those guys and hopefully we can continue to play some solid golf and keep getting in groups like that with those guys.

Q. How are you enjoying Indonesia?

Indonesia’s great! Been really busy so far this week so haven’t had the chance and time to really go and explore but the golf course is awesome, the traffic is something else, I’ve heard about it and experienced it now so but it’s one of these places that the people are amazing. Yesterday afternoon the people were out there the crowds were unbelievable, they are so excited to have us out here and cheering for us so can’t wait for the weekend to see more people come out.

Q. (Response from yesterday) Judging the characteristics of the golf course, what’s it going to require from you to be in contention on Sunday?

I think patience, especially off the tee. Most of the holes here, there’s a pretty aggressive line that you can shorten up some of these holes the problem is if you miss it by a yard left or right on that aggressive line it can lead to a big number.

Today I stayed really patient off the tee, I didn’t try to press or do anything out of the ordinary which was good and trust my iron game and trust that I’ll make good putts and trust that the putts are going to land, the more I do that the more opportunities I’ll get and if you have a lot of luck you’ll make some and I think that’s the biggest key is keep doing what I did today for the rest of the week and if I need to change up anything late Sunday then we’ll do that but right now just keep the pedal down.

Some of LIV Golf’s finest will be heading to one of Hong Kong’s longest-running professional sporting events after the Team Championship finale in Miami as a stellar field prepares for the return of the Hong Kong Open from November 9-12 at Hong Kong Golf Club.

Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters winner, and 2010 US Open winner Graeme McDowell join LIV Golf headliners Harold Varner III and Belgian Thomas Pieters for the long-running tournament, first held in 1959, which has a boosted prize fund of $2 million this year thanks to its new status as an International Series event on the Asian Tour.

Other big-name players including 2022 Open Championship winner Cam Smith, two-time Hong Kong Open champion Wade Ormsby, Hong Kong Asian Games gold medallist and the first local player to win an Asian Tour title at the World City Championship in March, Taichi Kho. LIV Golf ‘s 2023 Individual Champion Talor Gooch and Eugenio Chacarra are also already confirmed in the field for the first Hong Kong Open to be contested since 2020.

For Varner and Pieters, the Fanling date means a chance to re-connect with close friend and RangeGoats teammate Gooch. Gooch has acknowledged his relationship with HV3 as a key factor in his switching from 4 Aces to RangeGoats on LIV Golf this season.

“HV3 and I first met in college golf. We just hit it off right away and have been close ever since. Then we had a bunch of time together on the PGA Tour, and now on LIV — and now we are teammates so it is fun, and it is a cool opportunity,” said Gooch, who has made history this season as the first player to win three LIV Golf events and won the overall Individual Championship points race on Sunday at LIV Golf Jeddah.

Varner also has some history behind his name. The 33-year-old is only the second American player to win the Australian PGA Championship. He added a first LIV Golf victory in Washington DC in May and also won the PIF Saudi International last year.

Gooch is confident that Varner and his teammate Pieters are going to quickly become fan favourites at the Hong Kong Open.

“HV is about as fun of a dude that you are going to be around, but he is also a great player. He hits the ball a long ways, and he has a great short game. He plays well all over the world. He is my teammate, but I hope that I whip him that week,” added Gooch.

Pieters has seven wins since turning pro in 2013 and has represented Belgium and Europe in numerous team events including the 2016 Ryder Cup — when he led Europe with four points.

Talor Gooch. LIV Golf

“Thomas is truly one of the great talents that we have in the game,” said Gooch. “You look at him and think why are you not playing a different sport. He looks like a Greek god. He is 6ft, 5ins and a big dude that hits the ball a country mile. Great short game, great hands, just a great player. He truly has the potential to be one of the best players in the game on any given week.”

From friends to friendly rivals, the Hong Kong Open is set to welcome the return of two Fanling — and Ryder Cup — legends in Reed and McDowell.

Reed is no stranger to the excitement surrounding the Hong Kong Open — the nine-time PGA tournament winner having finished T-3 at Fanling on his debut in 2015, behind winner Justin Rose and Lucas Bjerregaard. The 33-year-old Reed has returned twice since then (2016, 2018), and was named in the field for the 2021 tournament, which was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The Texan has also had five top-five finishes on LIV Golf this season. He had a similar showing at this year’s Masters at Augusta, a venue where Reed will forever be remembered for his heroics in 2018, when he shot 15-under-par to win by a stroke.

Northern Irishman McDowell is also no stranger to Fanling — or Reed — as the pair have been part of rival Ryder Cup camps down through the years, representing Europe and America, respectively.

The 44-year-old McDowell counts four top-20 finishes among his previous efforts at the Hong Kong Open, to add to 15 career wins on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour in his career. He has also been an ever-present player on the LIV Golf series.

The Hong Kong Open is the penultimate event of this season’s International Series, 10 marquee tournaments on the Asian Tour calendar. What happens in Fanling could have real bearing on the final standings for the International Series Order of Merit, the year-long race which will guarantee one spot for the overall leader in next season’s LIV Golf League.

Midway through last year’s final round at LIV Golf Jeddah, Patrick Reed hit a rough patch. A stretch of three consecutive bogeys sent him spiralling down the leaderboard. He responded with three birdies in his next four holes, but the damage had been done.

The cost? An $8 million bonus.

Reed entered that week at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club in third place in the season-long Individual Champion race. His 4 Aces captain, Dustin Johnson, had already wrapped up the title, but Reed, with 76 points, was just three points behind Stinger’s Branden Grace, who was playing despite suffering a rib injury the previous week in Bangkok.

Grace would ultimately finish outside the top 24 for points in Jeddah, providing a huge opportunity for Reed and the other chasers to move into a bonus-paying top-three position.

Had Reed parred just one of those three bogey holes in the final round, he would have finished the tournament at eight-under and a three-way tie for 10th with Abraham Ancer and Anirban Lahiri on the tournament leaderboard. Also, because Reed would’ve shot the better final-round score, he’d have claimed the tiebreakers against those two players for the 10th place points finish, worth 10 points. That would have given Reed 86 points in the final standings and the $8 million bonus for second place.

Instead, Reed finished at seven-under and in a seven-way tie for 12th. Reed lost the tiebreaker to five of those players, thus settling for 17th place, worth three points. That gave Reed a total of 79 points, matching Grace’s total.

Since the tiebreakers for season-long points are based on best tournament results, Reed lost the tiebreaker to Grace, who had won the second tournament of the year in Portland while Reed’s best finish was a second place in Bangkok. Thus, Grace earned the second-place bonus money.

Still, that left Reed in third place, which paid a $4 million bonus. But wait …

Peter Uihlein birdied his last hole in Jeddah, the par-5 18th, to force a playoff against his then-teammate Brooks Koepka, the Smash captain. It took three playoff holes, but Koepka finally won. Had Uihlein won, he would’ve finished second in the season-long race. Instead, his runner-up finish to Koepka was worth 30 points, which gave him 79 points.

Same as Grace. Same as Reed.

Grace, thanks to that Portland win, still claimed the second-place bonus. Third place was now down to Uihlein and Reed — and the tiebreaker went to Uihlein, who had two runner-up finishes on the 2022 season (one in Chicago to go with the one in Jeddah) to Reed’s one.

Thus, Uihlein claimed the third-place bonus money, leaving Reed as the odd man out.

No wonder it’s not a memory he likes revisiting.

“I definitely try not to think about last year, that’s for sure,” Reed said.

He now has a chance to make amends.

Reed returns to LIV Golf Jeddah next week ranked fourth in the season-long points standings. He has 121 points, which leaves him 25 points behind third-place Bryson DeChambeau, who has won two of the last three LIV Golf events. Three-time winner Talor Gooch is in second at 162 points while two-time 2023 winner Cameron Smith tops the standings with 170 points.

Reed is mathematically eliminated from finishing either first or second, but he does have a shot at the third-place bonus money should either one of these permutations take place:

Reed wins Jeddah and DeChambeau finishes no better than sixth

Reed finishes second in Jeddah, and neither Johnson, Grace nor Koepka win while DeChambeau finishes no better than 15th

Unlike last year, Reed has no need to protect his spot this time. As he unfortunately knows, fourth place does not earn bonus money, so Reed should have the green light whenever he feels like it. Play aggressive — but still play smart.

“Really for me, good golf takes care of everything,” Reed said. “I think that’s the biggest thing kind of going in is taking it day-by-day.”

Since joining LIV Golf in the second tournament of the inaugural season, Reed has consistently put himself in a position to win. Of his 18 regular-season starts, he’s finished on the podium four times, and he has four other top-10 finishes. Among his last five starts is a fifth place in Andalucía, a second in London (one stroke behind winner Smith) and a fourth in Bedminster.

Just as important, he’s been a key cog for the 4 Aces, last year’s Team Champions who’ll enter Jeddah in position to claim the top seed going into Miami for the second straight year. The 4 Aces have seven wins and finished on the podium a league-leading 12 teams since Reed was added to the team.

The Aces’ success has been rewarding, but Reed wouldn’t mind enjoying the spoils of his individual play. Returning to Jeddah next week may bring back old wounds, but it also provides an opportunity for positive memories. He’s due for a win — and Royal Greens may owe him one.

Patrick Reed. Asian Tour

Patrick Reed has confirmed he will be gunning for the inaugural St Andrews Bay Championship title.

The appearance of the 2018 Masters champion further bolsters the line-up for the $1.5 million event which will be the 12th leg of the 2023 Asian Tour season and the sixth stop on The International Series.

In what promises to be a memorable week at Fairmont St Andrews from August 24-27, Reed will join fellow Masters champion Sergio Garcia and Joaquin Niemann, alongside a host of players from the LIV Golf roster.

Organisers also announced that South Africans Dean Burmester and Branden Grace, Australian Matt Jones, Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra, Colombian Sebastian Munoz, New Zealander Danny Lee and Austrian Bernd Wiesberger will be gracing the fairways of the Torrance Course at Fairmont St Andrews.

Reed has been a permanent fixture in the top-50 in the Official World Golf Ranking since 2014 and is in an elite group of players who have posted top-10 finishes in all four Majors.

He’s been one of the most consistent players at this year’s Majors. Following a share of fourth at Augusta National in April, Reed was joint 18th at the PGA Championship, tied for 56th at the US Open and equal 33rd at last month’s Open Championship.

Cho Minn Thant, Asian Tour Commissioner & Chief Executive Officer, said: “We’ve had some strong fields at our International Series events thus far and the St Andrews Bay Championship is no exception. It’s wonderful to have such prominent players compete more regularly on the Asian Tour since the establishment of The International Series and this definitely validates the Asian Tour’s growth into a global Tour.

“I know this will motivate and inspire our Asian Tour members to raise their games. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to test themselves against genuine world-class players at a world-class venue.”

Winner of nine tournaments worldwide, Reed achieved his highest world ranking of sixth in June 2020.

In the 2022 LIV Golf Invitational series, he was in the top-five three times, including a runner-up spot in Bangkok, and finished fourth in the Individual Champion standings. In the 2023 standings he’s currently fourth having had four top-five finishes.

Callum Nicoll, Director of Golf & Estates at Fairmont St Andrews, said: “We’re delighted to see such a strong field shaping up and very much look forward to welcoming so many outstanding players to Fairmont St Andrews.

“Set among 520 acres of stunning Scottish coastline with views of St Andrews Bay, the Torrance Course at Fairmont is a worthy venue for such an historic tournament.”

Sculpted by European Ryder Cup legend Sam Torrance, the 7,230-yard layout has previously hosted the DP World Tour and European Seniors Tour as well as being a venue for Open Qualifying.

Part of the Asian Tour’s 2023 ‘UK Summer Swing’, the St Andrews showpiece will be preceded by the International Series England, at Close House in Newcastle.

The Asian Tour’s elite-level International Series comprises 10 events, featuring elevated prize funds and welcoming top golfers from every continent and Tour.

Following the first four International Series events of 2023, American Andy Ogletree leads the way in the overall standings with Japan’s Takumi Kanaya, Zimbabwe’s Kieran Vincent and Australian Wade Ormsby in pursuit.

We bet when you saw the headline about a late ‘fore’ call from Patrick Reed, you probably automatically assumed he was very much in the wrong. In fact, you probably hoped he was. In this case, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

About halfway through his opening round at the LIV Golf London event, Reed found himself in some thick grass left of the fairway at Centurion’s par-5 13th. Generally speaking, even for the best players in the world, high grass like the stuff Reed was hitting out of is going to turn the club over at impact and create a bad left miss.

RELATED: Smith shoots 63, Ripper GC takes round 1 team lead in London

You’d think with that knowledge that fans wouldn’t stand directly in the left-miss zone, but that didn’t stop one spectator from doing exactly that. When Reed’s club predictably turned over and he pulled one low and left, he nearly took said spectator’s head off. In a rare bit of brilliant comedic timing, Reed let out a sheepish “fore” call a few seconds after the dust had settled:

Patrick Reed. ?#DIALED? pic.twitter.com/aEIu3gzxg2

— DIALED GOLF (@DialedGolf_) July 7, 2023

Funny stuff, P-Reed! Nobody actually got hit, and there was no actual time to call “FORE” to this guy standing about 30 yards ahead. He, to steal an iconic “Happy Gilmore” quote, shouldn’t have been standing there. Lesson learned. Even if the man has a green jacket to his name, you’re going to want to stand the hell back when he’s hitting from knee-deep rough.

Reed, impressively, went on to save par, then played his final nine holes in two under to post a one-under 70. He’s seven off the lead of Cameron Smith, who opened with a bogey-free 63 to take the solo lead.

Ross Kinnaird/Getty Images

The summer is officially heating up, and we don’t mean that in a cliche way. It’s literally scorching hot, with Monday, July 3 being reported as the hottest day ever recorded globally. And it’s only going to get hotter, according to the “experts.”

For hardcore golfers, this means two things: 1. you’re about to go through a LOT of golf gloves in a short period of time, and 2. your golf tan is about to be in peak form. We’re talking about Stewart Cink black-and-white cookie head form:

Stewart Cink is tied for 4th but will remain undefeated as the holder of 'Golf's Worst Tan' award…. pic.twitter.com/oV3gZTupPI

— Your Golf Travel (@yourgolftravel) August 12, 2018

It’s unavoidable this time of year. Even if you load up on sunscreen (which you absolutely always should), it’s still going to be impossible to combat the goofy-ass golf tan look. A simple beach or pool day will quickly turn into a comedy hour with everyone pointing out that your feet are insanely white in comparison to your legs, and that your torso is blinding everyone. Put your shirt back on you freakshow.

Those of us brave enough to show off the golf tan in public cannot be shamed, however. Some of us wear it with pride. People like Si Woo Kim. Heroes:

Me & Si Woo…we’re just alike. pic.twitter.com/0g1K3KHTdc

Oh yeah, that’s the good stuff. If you just zoomed on on Si Woo’s bicep, you’d probably automatically assume it was Stewart Cink’s dome. That’s how you know this is one of the greats. Not to be outdone by Patrick Reed:

Let us celebrate the Patrick Reed tan-line forehead. cc: @ByTheMinGolf @Adam_Sarson @NoLayingUp pic.twitter.com/LuTyyhkp57

Or Jim Furyk:

Jim Furyk's hat tan line is out of control!

The tan spot from the cutout above where you adjust hat size—that's just next level stuff. pic.twitter.com/ma32faNjif

And there you have it, your Mount Rushmore of tour pro golfer tans: Stewart Cink, Si Woo Kim, Patrick Reed, Jim Furyk. That’s a group you can go to war with. A group that should probably mix in one shirtless beach day every now and then just to mitigate things, although that would mean we wouldn’t get these legendary photos. On second thought, keep doing what you’re doing, boys.

Lee Westwood. Asian Tour

Ten LIV Golf players are set to join up with their Asian Tour counterparts to take on Close House just outside Newcastle for the $2 million International Series England from August 17-20.

Lee Westwood, the former world No. 1 with 44 career victories — including eight on the Asian Tour — spearheads the LIV contingent for the test on the banks of the River Tyne.

Despite being born and raised in Worksop, and an ardent Nottingham Forest fan, ‘Westy’ moved north to the region a number of years ago and struck up a long-standing partnership with Close House as its Attached Tour Professional.

“I’ve had the privilege of playing at home in tournament situations before, and there is truly nothing quite like it,” Westwood said. “Local excitement is building nicely with some of the players confirmed.

“I’ve been embraced by the people of Northumbria since I set up home there. Their passion for sport is unrivalled and the full field will feel that during the tournament week — the atmosphere will be tremendous.”

Abraham Ancer. Saudi International 2023/Neville Hopwood

Joining the Majesticks team co-captain are 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed, 2010 US Open winner Graeme McDowell and this year’s PIF Saudi International victor Abraham Ancer. Like Ancer, whose most recent win netted a share of the $5 million purse in Saudi Arabia, McDowell will be looking to improve on a single Asian Tour career victory, which came back in 2008 in South Korea.

Seven-time Asian Tour winner and LIV Golf player Anirban Lahiri will also make his second International Series appearance of the year, following an impressive runner-up finish at the Vietnam event back in April. On that occasion it was Kieran Vincent who emerged victorious, somewhat following in the footsteps of older brother Scott, who earned a place in the 2023 LIV Golf League by topping The International Series 2022 Order of Merit.

Eugenio Chacarra. LIV Golf

Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra and American Jason Kokrak also make International Series returns after teeing it up in the first event on the Asian Tour’s 2023 schedule in Oman. Meanwhile, England’s Richard Bland, Brendan Steele of the United States and South Africa’s Dean Burmester will make their debuts.

Signalling the halfway point of The International Series 2023 season, the event at Close House will be pivotal for players looking to climb The International Series OOM, currently led by the only two-time International Series winner, Andy Ogletree.

As expected, there is already fierce competition to finish within the top 32 places come the end of the season. At that juncture, the player in the No.1 position will punch his ticket directly to the ultra-lucrative 2024 LIV Golf League, while the remaining 31 players will secure entry into the LIV Golf Promotions Event to vie for three further places up for grabs.

Phachara Khongwatmai. Asian Tour

Among those leading the charge to dethrone the current number one are several of the Asian Tour’s brightest stars, including a quartet of Thai golfers: Gunn Charoenkul, Chonalatit Chuenboonngam, Sadom Kaewkanjan and Phachara Khongwatmai. All currently sit within the top 10 of The International Series OOM and are looking to secure their first International Series wins.

Head of The International Series, Rahul Singh, said: “Having the likes of Lee Westwood, Patrick Reed, Abraham Ancer and other LIV stars confirmed for International Series England is demonstrative of the growing strength of The International Series and the allure of the fabulous Lee Westwood Colt Course at Close House.

“We are returning to England’s north-east after being made to feel so welcome last year, despite restrictions imposed by the pandemic. We are ready to renew the fervour this year and welcome spectators to what stands to be the biggest International Series event yet.”

No sport on earth does worst-kept secrets quite like golf. The NBA gives it a run for its money and God only knows what happens in professional curling, but nothing breeds whispers, rumour and hearsay quite like a sport where you literally have to whisper. Of all of golf’s unspoken certainties, however, none has been more obvious (or hilarious) in recent years than the identity of the infamous @useGolfFACTS Twitter admin.

Our big brothers at Golf Digest have dug deep into the suspiciously pro-Patrick Reed Twitter account in the past, and while no official conclusions were reached (Pat doesn’t need another lawsuit on his hands, let’s be honest), the overwhelming consensus is that the mastermind behind @useGolfFACTS is none other than Reed’s wife Justine.

This has been neither confirmed nor denied by the Reeds, but in the wee hours of Monday morning we got the closest thing to an admission yet when a joke about Justine’s, um, specific taste in sporting-event seating prompted this instantly iconic reply:

These look like nice seats to me! pic.twitter.com/l0hO5GDbrH

— GolfFACTS (@useGolfFACTS) April 17, 2023

This isn’t exactly Paul Bremer saying “Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.” It’s not the FBI finding Whitey Bulger kickin’ it in Santa Monica, but in the weird, wild, insular world of Golf Twitter, it’s pretty darn close.

The tweet by No Laying Up’s Tron Carter specifically references Justine Reed’s outburst following a 2018 Boston Red Sox game, in which she characterized their premium baseline seats as the “line-drive section” and slammed the PGA Tour for providing the tickets (for the record, all 30 MLB teams instituted netting in 2018). With Patrick Reed seen taking in an Australian rules football game ahead of LIV Golf’s Adelaide stop this week, the waters were ripe for fishing and @useGolfFACTS—either unthinkingly or simply because they do not care anymore—gobbled up the bait.

Perhaps this won’t be the end of the saga. Part of us even hopes it’s not, if only for the laughs. But if this is truly the pulling of the curtain—the ‘Wizard of Oz’-ian reveal we have long pined for—then there’s nothing to say but congratulations. In today’s day and age, where everyone knows everything about everybody in three clicks and a swipe, Justine—or whoever—had a hell of a run.

Patrick Reed said he was too busy playing in the first round of the Masters, so he hadn’t had time to look at the decision released earlier that day by a UK arbitration panel that gave the DP World Tour a legal victory over LIV Golf. The April 6 ruling upheld the DP World Tour’s right to enforce its conflicting-release regulations against members who played in LIV events as well as sanction players who violate those policies.

More than a week later, and after finishing an impressive T-4 at Augusta National, Reed appears to have taken a look and, not surprisingly, doesn’t seem happy with the ruling. At least that’s the impression the LIV golfer left after being interviewed by The Times.

“‘Disappointed’ isn’t the word. We strongly feel that the Sports Resolutions ruling is wrong,” Reed is quoted as saying in an April 16 story.

Reed was an honorary lifetime member of the DP World Tour, as well as a member of the PGA Tour, when he moved to LIV Golf last June. While prohibited from competing in PGA Tour events after playing on the new circuit (he eventually resigned his PGA Tour membership), Reed and other LIV golfers were allowed to play in DP World Tour events pending the outcome of the arbitration case.

Reed traveled to London in February and spoke before the independent three-person panel on behalf of LIV as each side made its arguments. According to The Times, Reed felt the timing of the arbitration ruling was “coincidental but planned”, coming two months after the hearing but the same day as the opening round of the Masters.

As DP World Tour officials consider whether to allow those playing in LIV events to keep playing their tour, LIV players and officials are reportedly exploring whether there’s a way to challenge the ruling in English court. Asked by The Times if he was considering participating in such a legal challenge, Reed was quoted as saying: “Yes I am. I will always and have always planned to play as a proud member of the DP World Tour.”

Reed is scheduled to be in the field next week as the LIV Golf League holds its next event at The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia.
