Max Homa would likely have described his time in South Africa as a success regardless of his finish at the Nedbank Golf Challenge. The opportunity to compete in a different part of the world was one the 32-year-old Californian couldn’t pass up, turning it into a family trip by arriving early with his wife Lacey and taking in a safari excursion with fellow PGA Tour pro Justin Thomas and his wife, Jill.

But with a 19-under 269 total at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, capped by a closing six-under 66, Homa is taking home a trophy and a €961,124.05 first-place prize money payout from his working vacation. Homa won his first DP World Tour title (to go with six PGA Tour victories) by defeating Nicolai Hojgaard by four shots (and a hard-charging Thomas, who finished fourth but seven shots back).

“It’s just been tremendous to get to travel to a new place, meet so many amazing people,” said Homa, the fifth American to win the tournament (along with Jim Furyk twice, Johnny Miller, Raymond Floyd and Corey Pavin) but the first since it became a DP World Tour event. “The fans have been amazing. Everyone has been so welcoming and kind.”

Never mind that Homa hadn’t played competitively since the final day of the Ryder Cup on Oct. 1, or in a stroke-play event since the Fortinet Championship in mid-September. And forget the fact that Homa still hadn’t found his comfort zone with the 10-hour time change until a few days into the tournament. His game was spot on, playing bogey-free golf through his first 39 holes and making just three all week.

Suffice it to say, Homa’s putter came in handy at clutch moments. Like here at the 16th hole on Sunday. Homa, who opened the day with a one-stroke lead over Matthieu Pavon, was clinging to the two-shot margin, now of Hojgaard and Thorbjorn Olesen, as he faced this 38-foot birdie opportunity on the par-3 16th hole.

“It was one of those weeks, the ball wanted to go in when it needed to,” Homa said.

And it was also one of those weeks where good breaks came at the right time too, like with this drive on the par-5 14th hole.

A very lucky break for @Maxhoma as he hits a buggy and lands back in play…?#NGC2023 pic.twitter.com/NI4ixcTMdh

“To be granted the opportunity to even be here, I was truly grateful for,” Homa said, “but to come out with a trophy is just cherry on top.”

As it turned out, Homa wasn’t the only “big winner” after the end of the Nedbank. So, too, was Rory McIlroy, despite the fact the Northern Irishman wasn’t even in the field.

McIlroy began the penultimate event on the 2023 DP World Tour schedule in first place in the tour’s Race to Dubai points list and was assured to remain No. 1 afterward regardless of the outcome. Yet by virtue of Homa’s victory, coupled with the performance of the rest of the field, McIlroy will arrive at the upcoming DP World Tour Championship having clinched the season-long title for the fifth time in his career no matter the outcome during the coming week in Dubai. McIlroy has 5,164.47 points while Jon Rahm, sitting in second, has 3,081.94. The winner earns 2,000 points.

McIlroy previously had been the winner of the Order of Merit in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2022. Only two golfers have won the title more often: Colin Montgomerie having claimed it eight times and Seve Ballesteros six.

It would be fair to say Tommy Fleetwood is going through a period on the golf course you could describe as ‘unusual’.

However, the Englishman would be the first to concur that ‘unusual’ is no bad thing as his recent victory in the Nedbank Golf Challenge saw him finally get back in the winner’s circle.

Winning had become unusual.

His most recent triumph before the November success in South Africa was in the same competition in Sun City way back in 2019. A slump in form then saw him slip from a high of No. 9 in the world to No. 50 by the time he missed the cut at the Honda Classic this February.

The 31-year-old took time to reset earlier this year, and it has paid dividends, with a T10 at the RBC Heritage in April seemingly kick-starting a return to form. He turned in his best performance at the US PGA Championship with a T5 a few weeks later, and the consistency continued with T4s and both the Scottish Open and Open Championship over the summer.

Still, that winning feeling had become ‘unusual’, and it was not until his trip to South Africa to defend his Nedbank title, following a two-year Covid hiatus, that he was able to end his trophy drought.

“I think the overall feeling was how much I enjoyed being back in contention,” he told Golf Digest Middle East about landing his ninth professional title and following it up with an impressive T5 at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates at the end of November. “I feel like my game’s been on the right track and I’ve been doing a lot of the right things. I’ve been driving it so much better.”

Fleetwood was overcome with emotion on the 18th after his Nedbank triumph — understandable after such a long wait and to cement his name alongside some legends of the game in ‘South Africa’s Major’.

“Some of the greats of the game have held that trophy aloft, to be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Seve [Ballesteros], Nick [Faldo] and Ernie [Els] makes me feel like all of the hard work I put in on a day-to-day basis makes it worth it,” he added.

Fleetwood’s return to form could not have come at a better time as the famous UAE Swing approaches in the New Year — with the addition of the Hero Cup — in a Ryder Cup year.

The Englishman is looking to play his way into Luke Donald’s Team Europe plans for the showdown with the Americans at Marco Simone GC in Rome come September — starting in the UAE capital.

Ahead of the traditional Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and Dubai Desert Classic, Fleetwood will have the honour of captaining Team GB & Ireland against Continental Europe in the matchplay Hero Cup at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, the event aimed at getting the European hopefuls up to speed ahead of the Ryder Cup, a competition that is a favourite of Fleetwood’s.

During the 2018 edition of the biennial tournament, Fleetwood and best buddy Francesco Molinari hit the headlines as duo won four points from four matches together to help down Team USA at Le National in Paris. The ‘bromance’ would become famously known as ‘Moliwood’.

However, with his Italian pal now on the other side of the fence as he will captain Team Europe against him and his nine teammates in Abu Dhabi, it all seems a little, well, unusual.

“Fran [Molinari] and I obviously get on very well so I am sure it will feel a little strange at first being opposing captains,” Fleetwood explained. “But I think the Hero Cup is a fantastic way for players to compete in team matchplay, which is something both of us have always relished.

“Abu Dhabi has been pretty good to me over the years so hopefully that will continue in January and I look forward to working closely with Fran and Luke, as well as all the players.”

Abu Dhabi certainly has been good to Fleetwood, with back-to-back victories in the HSBC Championship in 2017 and 2018 followed by a narrow miss for the hat-trick in 2020, on the very same National Course where he will lead Team GB&I in January.

He will also have another edge this time around as he now calls the UAE his home, having moved to Dubai with his family earlier this year. He plans on using his ‘home’ comforts to his advantage come the UAE Swing.

“They are essentially home tournaments for me, as I’ve been living in the UAE now,” he said. “They [the HSBC Championship and Dubai Desert Classic] are two of the biggest tournaments of the year on the DP World Tour, with some of the best fields and two of the best courses in the region, so I’m very excited.”

Despite having these upcoming events close to home, Fleetwood admits time on the road can be tough, as he balances life on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, with tournaments taking him all over the world — he flew into Dubai for the DPWTC only hours after winning in South Africa, and is jetting off to the Bahamas for Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge before a well-earned rest.

“It’s been a hectic year with a lot of travel and tournaments, but I had an extended break in the summer,” he explained. “I’m fortunate enough to have been invited to Tiger’s event in December, but after that I’ll relax over Christmas until the New Year.”

Not that he will be piling on the pounds with turkey and stuffing. “I’ll still be putting in the work though, trying to refine and improve my game ahead of the 2023 season,” he added.

That relaxation is something Fleetwood takes seriously, and he is relishing a few weeks’ rest and competition in his new home in the UAE.

“I am a resident and my family lives here now. My kids are in school here too,” he added. “So Dubai is where normal life is for us at this time. So that’s been great, and we’ve settled in really well.

“We moved over around three months ago, it’s been great for me, [wife] Clare and the boys. The boys are loving school here which is great, so we’re feeling settled and loving life so far.”

Part of the reason Fleetwood had to rush home from South Africa was for the launch of his Tommy Fleetwood Academy at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

“A big factor in the move to the UAE was launching the Academy, which I’m really passionate about,” he said. “Having the chance to help grow the game of golf in the region is an amazing feeling. The facility is superb, the DP World Golf Performance Centre is state of the art, with fantastic facilities and top-level coaches, so it is the perfect spot to launch the Academy.”

With all the travelling, it was jokingly suggested that Fleetwood spends more time with his caddie Ian Finnis than with his wife, Clare. But Fleetwood was happy set the record straight.

“As golfers, we all absolutely love our jobs and are incredibly fortunate to be in the position we have, but the downside is spending a lot of time away from the family,” he said. “Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love spending time with Fino and he’s one of my best mates, but you do get homesick at points and miss the family when you’re on the road for so long. Luckily, Clare is my manager, which means she comes to a lot of tournaments with me.”

With the winning drought over and the monkey off his back, Fleetwood is eagerly looking ahead to a successful 2023 — as that date in September looms.

“My main goal for 2023 is to make the team — playing in a Ryder Cup is unlike any tournament we have in the sport, it’s totally unique, where some of the best bonds are formed and experiences are had,” he said. “I’ve been lucky enough to play in the past two events, with mixed results, to play in Rome is the dream as it’s the pinnacle of the sport.

“But I have to approach it like any other year. On a day-to-day basis, I’m going to keep working hard, trying to improve and that will give me the best chance of being successful. It’s nice to be in a pretty good spot in the world rankings [he was back up to No. 23 following the DPWTC and second on the Team Europe points list]. I want to contend in some more tournaments over the next year as there is no better feeling than lifting a trophy after a tough 72 holes. I’d missed it over the past three years. If I perform like I know I can, it will hopefully be a good year.”

And can 2023 be the year Tommy also wins a major? “I hope so. I’ve been close, so one day the door will open if I keep knocking!”

Tommy Fleetwood held on to his crown at the Nedbank Golf Challenge after winning a thrilling battle with Ryan Fox down the stretch at the Gary Player Country Club.

The Englishman sealed his sixth DP World Tour victory three years after he last lifted the trophy in Sun City — with the event returning for the first time since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fleetwood shot a five-under-par 67 to finish on 11-under, one ahead of New Zealand’s Fox, who would have leapfrogged Rory Mcllroy at the top of the DP World Tour Rankings with a victory.

Fleetwood and Fox went into the final round three shots behind Rasmus Højgaard and Thomas Detry and the overnight leaders had only managed five holes when play was suspended due to lightning in the area.

Shortly after the restart, Højgaard went bogey-bogey-double bogey from the seventh, and Fleetwood and India’s Shubhankar Sharma took advantage, moving to 10-under with birdies at the par-five ninth. Sharma posted another at the 10th while Fleetwood could only par as Fox joined the party.

Fox had started with six straight pars then birdied four in a row. He left himself around eight feet at the seventh and eighth, was unlucky with a long eagle putt at the ninth before tapping in, and then holed an 11-footer at the tenth.

Fleetwood slipped back after a bogey at the 12th but a moment of magic at the 14th turned things back in his favour. He was in the bunker left of the par-five in two and holed it for eagle it to jump to 11 under, and moments later, his playing partners Sharma and Fox rolled in their birdie putts and the three of them walked to the 15th tee sharing the lead.

Sharma’s challenge ended with bogeys at 16 and 17 and when Fleetwood tapped in for par at the last, after almost sinking a huge birdie attempt, Fox paid for a poor tee shot and posted his only bogey of the day at the worst possible moment.

Sharma finished in solo third at nine under par, with Scotland’s Richie Ramsay a shot further back. Christiaan Bezuidenhout was the highest placed home favourite at seven under par alongside Sweden’s Sebastian Soderberg.

Luke Donald and Ryan Fox were two shots ahead of the chasing pack when round two of the Nedbank Golf Challenge was halted due to inclement weather.

The leading duo had only completed three holes when play was initially halted at 11.49am with thunder and lightning in the immediate vicinity of Gary Player Country Club.

When the lightning threat dissipated, heavy rain continued, leaving areas of the course waterlogged, and the decision was taken to suspend overnight.

European Ryder Cup Captain Donald and overnight leader Fox both started the day brightly, birdieing the second hole, but when the Kiwi bogeyed the third, both players were tied at eight-under when the hooter went.

England’s Ross Fisher played the front nine in three-under par and added an eagle at his last hole of the day — the par five 10th — to get to six-under, alongside Dane Rasmus Højgaard and Guido Migliozzi of Italy, who were through six and three holes respectively.

Tournament Director, David Williams, said: “We came off the course due to lightning, that danger remained for a few hours, and unfortunately the rain then continued.

“We went out to have a good look at the course and it was waterlogged. What it needed was the rain to stop for a couple of hours to allow us to prepare the course.

“When it got to around 3.30pm it meant that at most we would only get a few holes completed and conditions still would not have been good.

“We decided that the sensible move would be to suspend and re-start tomorrow at 7.45am.”

Ryan Fox gave his chances of topping the DP World Tour Rankings a boost as he fired an impressive opening round of 64 to lead the 2022 Nedbank Golf Challenge.

After carding two birdies and a bogey on the front nine, Fox fired an eagle and five birdies after the turn to get to eight-under par and move one stroke ahead of European Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald, who has returned to Gary Player Country Club for the first time since 2014.

New Zealand’s Fox began the week second on the DP World Tour Rankings, having already claimed two victories in a stellar 2022 season. If he can add another win to his tally in Sun City on Sunday, Fox will overtake leader Rory McIlroy ahead of the season finale in Dubai next week.

Former World No. 1 Donald is in second place after notching seven birdies in a bogey-free 65, with Italy’s Guido Migliozzi two shots further back after his 67.

Australian Min Woo Lee continued the form that saw him notch up back to back third place finishes in his last two appearances, getting to four-under with his round of 68, alongside Fabrizio Zanotti of Paraguay and England’s LIV Golf star Richard Bland.

Edoardo Molinari, one of Donald’s vice-captains for next year’s Ryder Cup in Rome, is amongst five players a shot further back at three under par.

“Feels a bit weird to have done that today (shot 64). Had a lot of good numbers, managed to get the yardages right and I putted really nicely. Still feels a bit strange to be honest,” admitted Fox.

“It’s not quite as intimidating off the tee as I used to find it. There are still some tough tee shots around here but I feel like I’ve got a bit more control over the driver and being able to keep it in play. I’ve played at altitude a bit more and sort of have an idea of how everything plays. I felt a bit easier visually hitting the distances than I have in the past.

“You don’t get it very often (everything going well). You very rarely get it for a week but it was very nice to get it for that back nine. I played OK on the front and from 11 on I didn’t miss a shot. Had a lot of really good numbers, which helps. When you’re in that state you just need to get out of your own way and hit shots. I’ve done that well this year, but did it really well today.”

By Matt Smith
The field for the 40th anniversary of the Nedbank Golf Challenge just got a significant boost with world No. 14 Will Zalatoris announcing he will compete in the November 10-13 event.

American Zalatoris, who is second on the DP World Tour Rankings, will tee it up at Gary Player Country Club, Sun City as he seeks to become the first winner of the event from the United States in more than 15 years.

The $6 million event is the penultimate tournament on the 2022 DP World Tour schedule and will also carry an increased number of DP World Tour Ranking Points as the 64-man field vies for a place in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.

Zalatoris announced himself to the professional golfing world in 2020 after finishing in a share of sixth place at the US Open. The following year the 25-year-old finished one stroke behind Hideki Matsuyama at the Masters and was voted PGA Tour Rookie of the Year for the 2020-21 season.

His runner-up finish at the 2021 Masters was the first of three second place results in just ten major starts to date and this year he was runner-up at both the US Open and US PGA Championship, losing to Justin Thomas in a play-off at Southern Hills.

Zalatoris will bid to become the fifth winner of the tournament from the United States, and the first since Jim Furyk defended his title in 2006, when he competes in the historic anniversary edition of the Nedbank Golf Challenge, which has been postponed for two years due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.

“I’m really excited to travel to South Africa,” said Zalatoris. “I’ve had great experiences of playing DP World Tour events in Dubai and Scotland and I’m sure that South Africa will be no different.

“I’ve heard a lot about the Nedbank Golf Challenge and I’m looking forward to experiencing a new country and a new culture later this year. It’s sure to be a special occasion for everyone involved after waiting so long to celebrate a landmark milestone.”

The celebrations for this year’s tournament will seek to capture the history of a tournament that changed world golf’s landscape as it offered the first $1 million first prize in the history of golf, won by Ian Woosnam in 1987.

Some of golf’s most celebrated names, including Woosnam, Bernhard Langer, Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, Nick Price and Ernie Els are among the tournament’s former champions.

Jan Kruger/Getty Images
Tommy Fleetwood celebrates beating Marcus Kinhult in the playoff to win the 2019 Nedbank Golf Challenge.

By Ryan Herrington
Expectations have only grown for Tommy Fleetwood since he began asserting himself as one of the European Tour’s rising stars in 2017, with no one holding the 28-year-old Englishman to a higher standard than the man himself. Which is why there was a crack in Fleetwood’s voice Sunday after he closed out a playoff victory over Marcus Kinhult at the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

“I’m just really proud,” said an emotional Fleetwood, having shot a Sunday 65 at Gary Player Country Club in South Africa to overcome a six-stroke deficit and win his fifth European Tour event, but first since January 2018. “It’s just really, really cool to win a tournament.”

And nerve-wracking, too. Fleetwood’s charge in South Africa was not without its moments of stress…and good fortune. His final round included three eagles and three back-nine bogeys, a lucky kick off a sprinkler head and a deft chip on the first playoff hole to set up a par putt.

Three under on his round after eight holes, Fleetwood became a true threat when he chipped in for eagle on the ninth to get to 10 under for the tournament. He followed it up with another eagle on the 10th hole by rolling in a 12-footer that gave him a share of the lead for the first time.

RELATED: Behold the greatest shank in the history of the European Tour

As Fleetwood moved up the leader board, the only other player sticking with him was Kinhult, a 23-year-old Swede who grabbed his first European Tour win in May at the British Masters. Overnight leader Zander Lombard was on his way to shooting a 77, and his playing partners Louis Oosthuizen and Thomas Detry weren’t doing much better, posting a 75 and 74, respectively.

Kinhult fared well early, making four birdies in his first six holes and didn’t let the pressure of trying to claim the largest first-place check in European Tour history—$2.5 million—affect him, making just one bogey on the day.

RELATED: This is the luckiest break in the history of golf

Fleetwood wouldn’t finish quite as smoothly. After his back-to-back eagles on Nos. 9 and 10, he made bogeys on 11 and 12, only to make another eagle on the par-5 14th. His big break came on 15, when his approach shot looked like it was bounding well over the green:

Off the sprinkler! What a break!@TommyFleetwood1 is on fire ?#NGC2019 #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/VfyM39UZwi

— The European Tour (@EuropeanTour) November 17, 2019

That got Fleetwood to 13 under, giving him the solo lead, but a bogey on the 16th meant he’d have to settle for a seven-under 65 and a 12-under 276 total. Fleetwood then watched as Kinhult parred the final two holes for a 68, good enough to send the event to extra holes.

Both players were a bit ragged in the playoff. Kinhult’s drive on the par-4 18th went way left and forced him to lay up with his second shot. He hit his third long and left, leaving a 50-foot chip to try to save par. Meanwhile, Fleetwood pushed his drive and hit his second against the grandstands short and right of the green.

The Englishman then played a delicate chip shot, bouncing his ball through the rough and stopping it four feet from the hole. When Kinhult failed to chip in for par and settled for a bogey, Fleetwood was able to hole his par effort and clinch his first win in 22 months.

The victory puts Fleetwood in a great spot in the European Tour’s Race to Dubai with the season finale, the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, set for next week. He jumped from 10th in the standings prior to Nedbank to second, just behind Bernd Wiesberger. Fleetwood won the Race to Dubai title in 2017 and is in position to become the 21st player to win the season-long title multiple times.

Like the term “yips,” the word “shank” is one some golfers are too afraid to even say. The thinking being that the less you acknowledge these scourges, the less likely you’ll be plagued with them. But one European Tour pro proved a shank can actually work to your advantage. If you combine it with one of the most fortunate bounces you’ll ever see on a golf course, that is.

RELATED: You have to see this lucky bounce to believe it

During the third round of the Nedbank Golf Challenge, Denmark’s Joachim Hansen hit a truly magical hosel rocket from a greenside bunker on the sixth hole of Gary Player Country Club. Watch this crazy shot and listen to the fantastic call by the announcer:

Bad shot, amazing outcome ?

The luckiest shot you’ll see all season! #NGC2019 #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/kWFB5KaDxY

— The European Tour (@EuropeanTour) November 16, 2019

“Oh, Christopher Columbus.” Classic. Also classic was Hansen’s reaction, a combination of shame and disgust:

Don’t be so hard on yourself, Joachim. It wasn’t that bad of a shot. OK, so it was, but you gotta savor these rare good breaks! Hansen certainly took advantage of the ridiculous ricochet by saving par. He wound up shooting 71 and is in a tie for sixth place through 54 holes, five shots off Zander Lombard’s lead. With $2.5 million going to the winner of the European Tour’s penultimate event, this fortunate turn of events could wind up being very valuable for the 29-year-old in search of his maiden win.

Through three days of this South African event we’ve seen some wild things happen, from mongooses going after golf balls to baboons going after players to Lee Westwood’s miraculous escape from a plugged lie in a bunker. There was also the great bounce Thomas Detry got on Friday when a tee shot headed toward the water hit a pole holding a wind sock and came back into play.

We thought that might be the luckiest break of 2019. Turns out, it might not even be the luckiest break of the tournament.
