Our broad range of Hot List player testers reveal the clubs that worked best for them. Find the player who fits your game

By Mike Stachura and E Michael Johnson
What do real golfers like you think about the latest clubs? That’s why our panel of players is such a key part of our process. Together, they provide input that helps the Hot List judges determine the leading clubs in Performance and Look/Sound/Feel, two of our four Hot List criteria which together account for 65 percent of a club’s score.

But we know you want as much specific advice as you can get about what club is exactly right for you. So why not see which of our players matches best to your game and see what they were thinking. What follows are some of the top choices in each of our full swing categories from each player on our panel, choices that are informed by data from the Rapsodo MLM and GCQuad launch monitors. Certainly, you’ll see a lot of repeats as you go through these lists (that’s why those products tended to do well on the Hot List overall), but consider this another piece of information as you continue the search for the right club for you. Of course, we firmly believe that search needs the wisdom of a good clubfitter to finish the process, too. Each player’s basic data is listed below, along with their individual lists and accompanying swing videos from the Rapsodo MLM app.

By E. Michael Johnson
It wasn’t the Duel in the Sun but it was a duel in the sun as Cameron Smith fended off Jon Rahm birdie for birdie over the final nine to not only win the Sentry Tournament of Champions, but set an all-time 72-hole PGA Tour scoring record in relation to par at 34 under par.

Smith and Rahm each birdied Nos. 13 through 15 at Kapalua’s Plantation Course on Sunday, then parred the next two holes before matching birdies at the par-5 18th to give Smith with a one-shot margin of victory.

Without a bogey over his final 52 holes, Smith had many facets of his game working. The 28-year-old ranked second in strokes gained/off-the-tee, picking up more than 3.5 strokes on the field while also ranking fourth in driving distance at 302.6 yards. Smith’s strokes-gained mark was aided nicely by driving the green on the short par-4 14th hole, using his 10-degree Titleist TSi3 driver with a Fujikura Ventus Blue 60x shaft.

Smith also hit 86.1 percent of his greens in regulation. His irons are Titleist’s T100 in an all-black configuration, including the heads and shafts. When the Aussie did miss a green, he got up and down 80 percent of the time with his Titleist Vokey SM9 wedges—a model just recently introduced to the company’s tour staff.

Smith’s ability to get up and down is not only a testament to his short game and putting (he led the field in strokes gained/putting as well as putts per green in regulation) but also his grit.

“I’m a resilient guy,” the now four-time PGA Tour winner told Golf Digest in 2019. “It all stems from these words my dad told me. ‘Some days are diamonds, some days are duck s—.’ When things are going bad, I sometimes recall those words. It’s such a good terminology for golf, which can be so brittle. You wake up one day and can’t miss a shot and then the next day you feel like you’re playing like a 20-handicapper. Things tend to go up and down all the time and sometimes it’s helpful to just remind yourself of that.”

At Kapalua, there was a lot more up than down.

What Cameron Smith had in the bag at the Sentry Tournament of Champions:

Jim Herman is a 42-year-old on the PGA Tour who took until 2016 to win his first PGA Tour title at the Shell Houston Open. So it should not come as a shock that it took him a while to get going before going on to win the Wyndham Championship. Herman birdied three of his last four holes on Friday just to make the cut, then went on a tear, shooting 61-63 over his final 36 holes to win by one over Billy Horschel.

Although much attention will be paid to his sharp iron play over the final nine holes, resulting in a trio of short birdie putts, what kept Herman in contention was three big putts on the front nine. Herman dropped a 29-footer for birdie on the first and followed that with a 59-footer for an eagle 3 at the par-5 fifth hole. One from 14 feet followed at the eighth hole, too. For the week Herman was third in strokes gained/putting, picking up more than six shots on the field. In all, he made 444 feet of putts over the four rounds.

Herman’s putter is a Bettinardi Inovai 5.0 Tour F.I.T. Face mallet with a circle of open space in the cavity. Herman has used three different models of Bettinardi putters in his three wins on the PGA Tour (he also won the Barbasol Championship last year).

But that’s not to downplay his work tee to green as well. Herman ranked fourth for the week in strokes gained/tee-to-green, picking up nearly another six strokes on the field. With a split set of Mizuno JPX 919 irons.

What Jim Herman had in the bag at the Wyndham Championship:

By E. Michael Johnson
Brooks Koepka has now won back-to-back PGA Championships. That’s to go along with his back-to-back U.S. Opens. Koepka produced that never-before-accomplished double despite some unsteady golf down the stretch Sunday at Bethpage’s Black course, but he had enough to keep Dustin Johnson at bay and to win by two shots.

Although Johnson made a nice run to create some high drama, make no mistake: Koepka won the PGA over the first 54 holes, creating a seven-shot cushion heading into Sunday (one, that as it turned out, he desperately needed). The now four-time major champion did it the way he usually does—with a superior tee-to-green game along with a deadly (and highly underrated) short game combined with making enough putts to win.

How superior was the tee-to-green game? Consider that despite the final-nine hiccups, Koepka ranked second in strokes gained/off-the-tee, first in strokes gained/approach-the-green and first in strokes gained/tee-to-green (at a ridiculous 17.354 strokes). He also led the field in greens in regulation and was 10th in scrambling, meaning that he missed few greens and when he did, saved par most of the time.

Koepka averaged 313.2 yards in driving distance with his 10.5-degree TaylorMade M5 driver with a Mitsubishi Diamana White D+ 70 TX shaft. Koepka, used the M3 460 model earlier in the year, but switched to the company’s M5 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

The driver uses inject-face technology in which the springlike effect of the club is brought beyond the legal limit then brought back to conformance by injecting a resin behind the face to slow it down just enough to be legal. The club also employs the company’s TwistFace technology in which the face is gently curved more open on the high toe and closed on the low heel areas to help mitigate mis-hits. Koepka had the adjustable weights set in a split position with one far forward and one far back in the track that runs from front to back.

Koepka’s irons are Mizuno’s JPX 919 Tour, which boast a design where the topline is selectively thinned and the saved mass relocated in the toe and sole to provide added forgiveness. More toe weight also offers a more centralized sweet spot—a spot Koepka frequently finds.

But perhaps the shot of the tournament was the Titleist Vokey SM7 gap wedge that he hit from 160 yards downwind on the 10th hole, generally considered one of the most difficult on the course, to tap-in range. Moments later, Johnson made bogey at the 11th and the lead was back to six, which proved critical considering how the rest of the round played out.

Which ended in Koepka becoming a back-to-back champion. Again.

New Mizuno driver is most adjustable in company history with multiple weights, three tracks to control flight, spin

By Mike Stachura
The Mizuno GT180 lineup of woods debuted Feb. 1 with an obvious emphasis on precision adjustability over the ST180 lineup. But the goal with the GT180 wasn’t just more options. It was also a fresh commitment to speed.

Hence, the new materials, new construction and even increased forgiveness for a driver and fairway wood lineup focused on better players.

The GT180 driver is the headliner, and like the ST180, its faster ball speeds start with the use of the high-strength titanium alloy SP-700 in the GT180’s face. SP-700 titanium in drivers has been around for some time, especially in high-end drivers. It was used in TaylorMade’s 300 series drivers back in 2000, and also in Titleist’s C16 limited edition C16 driver two years ago. It’s been eschewed in most mainstream drivers as an unnecessary cost because traditional 6-4 titanium can be manufactured to reach the spring-like effect limit set by the rules.

But David Llewellyn, Mizuno’s director of research and development for golf, says the alloy changes design possibilities. With advanced forging and heat treating techniques, Mizuno’s team sees SP-700 creating more opportunities for off-center hit performance, Llewellyn said.

“It’s a property of that material called elongation, but what it’s allowing us to do is get the really complex geometries in the forged face,” he said, noting that the company’s multiple thickness face has greater varieties of thicknesses than they could get with the traditional 6-4 titanium used in the past. “You can get super-plastic behavior, which means you can deform it a lot more. It actually has a slightly higher repulsive force as it returns back to normal.”

That face material provides more heat to a driver that at its base is also about fitting specific ball flights to individual players. The GT180 driver is most notable for its adjustability, the most of any driver in company history. Two 6.5-gram weights move freely in center, heel and/or toe tracks to provide essentially an infinite number of combinations for lower spin, higher launch, draw- or fade-biased flights. But because the weight mechanism and tracks have been refashioned from the company’s previous adjustable driver, the JPX-900, it uses up less total weight that allows the head to reach 460 cubic centimeters for higher stability on off-center hits.

“We were able to make that head larger and more forgiving than it would be otherwise,” Llewellyn said, referencing the company’s past better-player focused drivers which checked in under the USGA size limit.

Only available in right-handed models, the GT180 driver makes use of Mizuno’s four-degree adjustable hosel that allows one head to produce lofts ranging from 7.5 to 11.5 degrees. A sliding chip on the sole allows the face to set up in a player’s preferred position (square, open, closed), regardless of which loft he fits into.

The company will offer a selection of 12 shaft options as part of the standard fitting setup, including Mitsubishi’s Kuro Kage as the stock selection, but the Mitsubishi Tensei (Blue, White, Orange) and Bassara shafts, as well. The standard length is 45 inches.

The GT180 line also includes two fairway wood options, both in a more compact size than the ST180 fairway wood lineup. Like the ST180, each features a high-strength maraging steel face insert to boost ball speeds, enhanced by a wave structure on the sole to provide additional influence on the face flex. That structure also pushes the center of gravity lower and slightly forward for less spin.

Like the driver, it offers an adjustable sole weight. The 17-gram weight moves freely on a center track to adjust spin and launch preferences. As well, the four-degree adjustable hosel gives players a wide range of lofts in the two models. The 14-degree “tour spoon” adjusts from 12-16 degrees, while the 15-degree works for 13-17 degrees.

HARTFORD, WI – JUNE 18: Brooks Koepka of the United States plays his shot from the 16th tee during the final round of the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills on June 18, 2017 in Hartford, Wisconsin. (Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)

By E. Michael Johnson

Brooks Koepka, the 2017 U.S. Open champion, has had an interesting couple of years equipment-wise. A Titleist staff player, Koepka left the company at the start of the 2016 season for a lucrative deal with Nike. However Nike abandoned the equipment business a little more than seven months later, leaving Koepka with a decision: continue playing Nike or look elsewhere?

Enter Mizuno and TaylorMade. Koepka switched to TaylorMade’s M2 driver last fall and also uses the company’s 2017 version of its M2 3-wood. The Mizuno association, however, is far more intriguing. Although not under contract with Mizuno, Koepka plays the company’s JPX 900 Tour irons. The background on the clubs is that Mizuno, knowing that Koepka’s Titleist contract was up (and pre-Nike deal), made the JPX 900 Tour with Koepka in mind. A different club from the company’s MP line, Mizuno felt he fit the mold of the JPX player. Then, after Nike left the club business, they reached out to Koepka again to gauge his interest in playing the irons and the clubs went in the bag earlier this year after an offseason of testing.

According to Jeff Cook, PGA Tour manager for Mizuno, it wasn’t a hard sell. “As soon as the Nike thing was over I contacted his manager and told him we designed the iron around him and was he open to trying them,” said Cook. “He was, and we got his specs [standard length, half-degree upright] and built him a set. Not much more than that.”

RELATED: Brooks Koepka muscles his way into history

Although some players are loathe to change clubs, Koepka is not one of them. Asked at the time of his Nike deal if he had any reservations about making such a complete overhaul of his bag, Koepka told Golf World, “Those of us on tour are being handed new equipment all the time. Someone has a new driver or a new ball or new wedges they want you to try. People say moving from one company to another is a big transition, but it’s really not because we’re trying new clubs all the time, new shafts all the time. When you have access to all this it’s not a big deal, even when switching brands. At least not for me. After a couple hundred balls I don’t even notice it.”

Clearly. Koepka’s Mizuno irons helped him hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation Sunday, including a pair of shots that led to birdies on Nos. 15 and 16, the former one of the best shots hit on the hole all day that led to a birdie that provided a welcomed cushion.
