Those who pay attention to new golf course openings have had Trout National on their radars since March when it was announced baseball legend Mike Trout was backing a new private club outside of Philadelphia — with a layout designed by Tiger Woods and his design team.

The TGR design team released its planned routing for Trout National’s The Reserve on Friday in addition to a social-media hype video that’s building up more excitement for this collaboration.

Trout, who grew up in South Jersey near Vineland, New Jersey, where Trout National is located, is seen on-site in the video with Woods and Woods’ chief design director Beau Welling.

Routed on an old silica sand mine and rambling farmland, Trout National appears to utilise sandy waste areas on most holes, including heroic carries over these hazards, plus water in play on five of the holes. Plans are for the private club to tip out at 7,455 yards as a traditional par 72 with four par 3s and four par 5s.

Officials say construction is slated to be completed in 2025, so we’ll see if we get any preview play in 2024. A short course will also be constructed. As you can see from the below video, it looks like there’s some nice elevation change, which can be a rarity in this flatter part of New Jersey.

One of the biggest names in baseball will partner with the biggest name in golf to help the baseball star make a dream come true of building a championship golf course in his own hometown.

Mike Trout, three-time American League MVP and 10-time All-Star with the Los Angeles Angels, will work with Tiger Woods and his golf course design business to create Trout National —The Reserve, a private 18-hole championship golf course in Vineland, New Jersey.

Construction on the project is slated to start later this year and is expected to open in 2025.

“I’m so excited to finally officially announce that we’re doing this project and doing it in a community that means so much to me,” Trout said in a release. “I was born in Vineland and raised in Millville. I met my wife, Jessica, in Millville, and my parents and siblings and in-laws still live in the area. I could put down roots anywhere in the country, but Jessica and I make South Jersey our off-season home and always cherish the time we get to spend there.”

Trout, 31, graduated from Millville High School in 2009. Millville is six miles south of Vineland, which is 40 miles south of Philadelphia. He has long been an avid golfer and frequently posts videos of himself swinging a golf club on his social media channels. It’s also not unusual for him to carry a pitching wedge with him during warm-up sessions before baseball games.

Also collaborating on the project are John and Lorie Ruga, owners of Northeast Precast of Vineland. They are working with Trout and Woods to develop the club, which will be between Sheridan Avenue and Route 55.

“I’ve always watched Mike on the diamond so when an opportunity arose to work with him on Trout National —The Reserve, I couldn’t pass it up,” Woods said in the press release. “It’s a great site for golf and our team’s looking forward to creating a special course for Mike, Jessica, John and Lorie.”

Said Trout: “I love South Jersey and I love golf, so creating Trout National – The Reserve is a dream come true. And then to add to that we’ll have a golf course designed by Tiger? It’s just incredible to think that this project has grown to where we’re going to be working with someone many consider the greatest and most influential golfer of all-time.”

The release says that the project will also feature a world-class practice range, short-game area, clubhouse, restaurant, lodging and a wedding chapel, among other amenities.

Transatlantic Twitter war: With so many awful things going on in the world, it’s great having Golf Twitter getting up and arms about something an announcer said. Here’s the clip that nearly reignited the Revolutionary War:

Was Azinger’s tone condescending? Yes. Did he (and others involved in NBC’s broadcast) focus too much on the fact that Tommy Fleetwood, a five-time European Tour winner and Ryder Cup star, has yet to win on the PGA Tour? Probably. But like it or not, it is a fact that the PGA Tour is the better tour and that Fleetwood has yet to win on it. And it’s a fact that Fleetwood is well aware of and agrees with:

And as rough as it was seeing Fleetwood find the water on the 72nd hole and blow a chance at the maiden PGA Tour title, European Golf Twitter would have been insufferable. Although I do love seeing British slang like “bollocks,” “wanker,” and “shiite.” I need to start incorporating those words more.

Lee Westwood: For one thing, it’s always nice to see a late-career revival. For another, I loved Westwood’s “Ask your parents” response when he gets asked about what it was like in the 90s. And finally, yes, I had a little money on the man, both to win (sigh) and finish top 10 (cha-ching). Our Christopher Powers dubbed Lee’s 2019 Open Championship run “Westy’s Last Stand,” but he’s still got plenty in the tank.

Rickie Fowler’s schedule: The PGA Tour star said he spends 25 to 30 days per year with sponsors, including shooting commercials. I’m totally buying it because his face is everywhere during a golf broadcast and he looks like a NASCAR driver with all those sponsors on his shirt. He’s also over 30, married, and out of the top 25 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Hey, you’ve got to pay the bills somehow.

Tiger’s new schedule: Tiger Woods skipping the Arnold Palmer Invitational isn’t reason for his fans to panic, but the latest indication that the rest of his career will consist of a very limited schedule is still sad. In an effort to avoid back-to-back starts, Tiger is opting not to play at a place where he’s won eight times and possibly the spot that gives him the best chance for a record-breaking 83rd PGA Tour title. But Woods is far more concerned about increasing his major total, and considering he also skipped this event last year, maybe this isn’t the worst news. . .

Brooks Koepka’s responses: I love Blunt Brooks or Candid Koepka as much as the next guy, but in the span of a few days he claimed he once made a hole-in-one at Augusta National and forgot about it later that day, said $200 million wouldn’t change his life, and insisted he played well two days in a row despite not coming close to making the cut at the Honda Classic. As the guy ventures further and further into too-cool-for-school territory, we’re starting to take some of his remarks with a huge grain of salt.

Being quarantined: Edoardo Molinari and Lorenzo Gagli were initially pulled from the Oman Open and placed in solitary confinement by the European Tour out of fear they had the Coronavirus. Fortunately, they didn’t, but it didn’t sound like a fun experience:
