Max Homa doesn’t pull many punches. He’s sniped, roasted, trolled and dragged countless golfers on his climb from Twitter jokester to PGA Tour superstar. As of October, however, he’d still yet to bag golf’s biggest scalp, Tiger Woods.

That all changed at the Tiger Woods Invitational earlier this fall when Homa and Woods were tasked with rattling off as many of Woods’ record 82 wins as they could. In the recently surfaced video, which went viral on Monday, you can see Homa’s life flash before his eyes as he begins the quiz with a simple, almost involuntary dagger:

“Not Riviera.”

We would’ve accepted the #HeroWorldChallenge pic.twitter.com/jbFVRwB5qf

Only Homa (and maybe JT) would be brave/dumb enough to begin a recitation of Woods’ greatest golf triumphs with one of the most notable gaps on his resume. That takes some giant titanium cojones. Just ask Stephen Ames what happens to guys talk trash to Tiger Woods. It ain’t pretty.

Does a similarly bloody fate await Homa at the Hero World Challenge? With both set to tee it up in the Bahamas, has the bill finally come due? We’ll just have to wait and see. Woods seemed to take the jab in stride, but if this look doesn’t say “keep laughing, I’m reloading,” we don’t know what does.

Max Homa would likely have described his time in South Africa as a success regardless of his finish at the Nedbank Golf Challenge. The opportunity to compete in a different part of the world was one the 32-year-old Californian couldn’t pass up, turning it into a family trip by arriving early with his wife Lacey and taking in a safari excursion with fellow PGA Tour pro Justin Thomas and his wife, Jill.

But with a 19-under 269 total at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, capped by a closing six-under 66, Homa is taking home a trophy and a €961,124.05 first-place prize money payout from his working vacation. Homa won his first DP World Tour title (to go with six PGA Tour victories) by defeating Nicolai Hojgaard by four shots (and a hard-charging Thomas, who finished fourth but seven shots back).

“It’s just been tremendous to get to travel to a new place, meet so many amazing people,” said Homa, the fifth American to win the tournament (along with Jim Furyk twice, Johnny Miller, Raymond Floyd and Corey Pavin) but the first since it became a DP World Tour event. “The fans have been amazing. Everyone has been so welcoming and kind.”

Never mind that Homa hadn’t played competitively since the final day of the Ryder Cup on Oct. 1, or in a stroke-play event since the Fortinet Championship in mid-September. And forget the fact that Homa still hadn’t found his comfort zone with the 10-hour time change until a few days into the tournament. His game was spot on, playing bogey-free golf through his first 39 holes and making just three all week.

Suffice it to say, Homa’s putter came in handy at clutch moments. Like here at the 16th hole on Sunday. Homa, who opened the day with a one-stroke lead over Matthieu Pavon, was clinging to the two-shot margin, now of Hojgaard and Thorbjorn Olesen, as he faced this 38-foot birdie opportunity on the par-3 16th hole.

.@Maxhoma hammers home a 38-foot putt to go 3 shots clear…?#NGC2023 pic.twitter.com/RSUuGTgzgJ

“It was one of those weeks, the ball wanted to go in when it needed to,” Homa said.

And it was also one of those weeks where good breaks came at the right time too, like with this drive on the par-5 14th hole.

A very lucky break for @Maxhoma as he hits a buggy and lands back in play…?#NGC2023 pic.twitter.com/NI4ixcTMdh

“To be granted the opportunity to even be here, I was truly grateful for,” Homa said, “but to come out with a trophy is just cherry on top.”

As it turned out, Homa wasn’t the only “big winner” after the end of the Nedbank. So, too, was Rory McIlroy, despite the fact the Northern Irishman wasn’t even in the field.

McIlroy began the penultimate event on the 2023 DP World Tour schedule in first place in the tour’s Race to Dubai points list and was assured to remain No. 1 afterward regardless of the outcome. Yet by virtue of Homa’s victory, coupled with the performance of the rest of the field, McIlroy will arrive at the upcoming DP World Tour Championship having clinched the season-long title for the fifth time in his career no matter the outcome during the coming week in Dubai. McIlroy has 5,164.47 points while Jon Rahm, sitting in second, has 3,081.94. The winner earns 2,000 points.

McIlroy previously had been the winner of the Order of Merit in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2022. Only two golfers have won the title more often: Colin Montgomerie having claimed it eight times and Seve Ballesteros six.

Netflix will air a live golf exhibition match on its platforms featuring Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa later this autumn.

The streaming service is copying the success of “The Match” celebrity series by fusing two of its programmes — the golf-centric “Full Swing” and F1 series “Drive to Survive” — for a made-for-TV (or second-screen) spectacle. “The Netflix Cup” will be the streamer’s first live sporting event, pitting the aforementioned golfers with four drivers in a match play tournament at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas.

The Wynn — a Tom Fazio design in Nevada — has previously hosted three of the last four iterations of“The Match.”

“The PGA Tour is proud to participate in this significant milestone for Netflix and we look forward to showcasing our sport’s professional athletes to a live global audience,” said Norb Gambuzza, PGA Tour senior vice president of media and gaming. “New and diverse audiences have come to know more about both our sports and their athletes through ‘Full Swing’ and ‘Drive to Survive’, and we are excited to team up with Netflix, Formula 1 and the Las Vegas Grand Prix on this exciting concept.”

Netflix released the first season of “Full Swing” — a docudrama that takes viewers behind the scenes of professional golfers’ lives on and off the course — this past February. According to the tour, data indicates the show had a significant impact on TV ratings this past season. “Full Swing” was available in 190 countries and 32 languages and it reached Netflix Top 10 worldwide, including No. 2 in the US and UK, and No. 1 in Ireland.

The event will air on Tuesday, November 14.

There are two types of boys trips: ones in which everyone comes back home ruined and depleted … and unsuccessful ones. One would expect that big-name golfers like Max Homa and Joel Dahmen have been on their fair share of the former, but Homa is ready for a break of sorts from the raucous activity. Once you hit your 30s, it’s all about catching up on sleep. Maybe getting a good book in. At least for Homa.

“Just one time I’d like to go on a boys trip where we catch up on sleep and relax as much as possible instead of pushing our bodies to the absolute limit,” Homa tweeted to a mixed response from the social media mob.

“That’s just not how this works,” responded Reddit co-founder (and Serena Williams’ husband) Alexis Ohanian. Kevin Kisnerm was intrigued by the idea, stating: “Second.” Former NFL broadcaster Mike Golic Jr may have put it best when he posted: “That will be hell’s coldest day on record.”

The crowd was truly mixed, including bucket-hat extraordinaire and Netflix star Joel Dahmen, who had a bone to pick with his fellow funny man.

If there were ever a time to go full Kobe Bryant, it would be right now for every member of the losing United States Ryder Cup team. Get right back in the gym, or on the range. Use the latest loss on European soil as motivation. Rise and grind. No days off. Mamba mentality.

It’s a nice idea, one Max Homa, an LA native who grew up on Kobe and the Lakers, could totally get behind. It’s one of the many traits Homa admired about Bryant, a five-time NBA champion who built his reputation on being a tireless worker who hated losing more than he loved winning.

There’s clearly a bit of that in Homa, who was the top player on the American team in Italy and made a clutch putt on the 18th hole to keep US hopes alive late on Sunday afternoon. But Homa realised he didn’t quite have that Kobe-esque “dawg” in him on Tuesday morning, when he woke up at 4am and thought about how Bryant would be up at that hour getting after it after a crushing loss. As for Homa, well, he just kept on scrolling:

First day of the off-season at home and I woke up at 4am. I’ve read so many stories like this about Kobe and his dedication when no one was watching and he had every excuse to take a break. It’s one of many things I admired about him. I scrolled on my phone for 2 hours

— max homa (@Maxhoma) October 3, 2023

In fairness, PGA Tour pros don’t really get a proper off-season, so you’ve got to rest during the “mini” off-seasons when you can. Then again, if you believe all the Kobe stories, he didn’t give himself an “off-season” either. Built different.

In the 43 Ryder Cups played before the latest edition this week at Marco Simone Country Club, only two have concluded in a tie. The first came in 1969, when the US were regularly thumping, at the time, Great Britain, while the only draw in the 28-point era against Europe occurred at The Belfry in 1989.

So, by nature of the infrequency of such an outcome, the potential for a tie is rarely talked about. That changed somewhat in Italy this week because of what transpired last weekend in Spain, where the American and European Solheim Cup squads found themselves deadlocked at 14 points each after Sunday singles.

As the Europeans celebrated heartily on the 17th green, a casual observer might have wondered, “Why so happy when you didn’t win?” The answer, of course, is that in these international competitions, the team that won the previous meeting gets to retain possession of the Cup.

You want the trophy back? Rip it away.

From the point of view of this edition’s Ryder Cup players, ahead of what many project to be a very competitive three days, there is certainly debate about whether accepting a tie for such enormous events makes sense in a seemingly win-at-all-costs sporting landscape. Interestingly, the opinions somewhat were divided by European and American views — and maybe that’s because Europe are the only team in the modern era to retain the Cup with a tie in ’89, after they beat the US in 1987 at Muirfield Village in Ohio.

“Fourteen-all? I love them whenever we won the last one,” Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy said to laughter during his formal pre-match interview.

“I think it’s part of history and tradition. I was watching the Solheim Cup last week, and obviously there was huge celebrations when Europe got to 14 and retained the cup. And I thought to myself: ‘Geez, they are celebrating a lot for a draw,’ and then I go back to Medinah in 2012, and we went ballistic when we got to 14 as well.”

That was no tie, though. Europe pulled off an incredible turnaround that Sunday outside of Chicago to defeat the US 14.5-13.5.

In no surprise, the Europeans seem to value the history and tradition of the cup retention idea.

“I do like traditions of the game, and this competition has been around since 1927, and that’s the way they have always done it,” McIlroy said. “Does that mean that’s the way they always have to do it? Probably not. But it’s nice to keep some of the tradition around the event.”

Englishman Justin Rose, who will play in his sixth Ryder Cup, said: “History is history. History is so important, I think. It’s quite nice to wrest it back fair and square. You have to win it to get the cup back.”

Rose then brought up an example in cricket that would be indecipherable to most American fans. In The Ashes series played between England and Australia, draws are acceptable.

“Retaining The Ashes is a big thing,” Rose said. “You can have rain that can interrupt and cause draws and things. But retaining it, not letting the other team have the trophy I think can be a win. So, therefore, sometimes the tie is still relevant in my mind.”

American Max Homa, a Ryder Cup rookie, likely knows little or nothing about cricket, but is a sports fanatic, and you can probably guess where he comes down on the subject.

“I’ve never liked ties. They don’t make sense to me,” he said. “The whole point of any competition is to see who wins. So, I do not like ties. I do not like the retaining thing.

“I understand it,” he added. “I understand why they do it, but I’m not a fan of it. You have a completely new team, for instance, at the Solheim Cup, and they tied. Someone should play a playoff.”

The Solheim result produced a number of ideas about how to settle a tie, from pitting two pre-selected players against each other in a playoff, or having multiple golfers play sudden-death, or requiring any singles matches that tied to keep playing.

Tiger Woods and Ernie Els faced each other on the final day of the 2003 Presidents Cup. Stuart Franklin

Homa, who has been watching a lot of film lately of past team competitions, recalled the 2003 Presidents Cup, played in South Africa, when Tiger Woods and Ernie Els set out on extra holes to decide the winning team after they tied in regulation, a unique trait of the US versus Internationals competition. But after they halved the three straight holes, they shook hands and called it a draw.

“I thought it was one of the most exciting things we’ve had, although it still ended in a tie,” Homa said. “That was one of the coolest memories you could have of a team event. You would, I guess, crave more of that if possible, plus we don’t tie very often in this thing.”

Homa shrugged and concluded, “People much smarter than me would have an answer for that, but I don’t know, just ties leave a bad taste in my mouth.”

One European who is on board with a possible playoff was Englishman Tyrrell Hatton. His exchange with a reporter got off to a hilarious start when a reference was made to “kissing your sister”.

“I don’t want to know what that’s like, what you referred to in the question,” Hatton quipped.

More seriously, he offered, “I would say tying is probably not ideal. I think it would be quite interesting if there was a way of putting in like a playoff, if that was to happen. I think it would be pretty exciting for fans, and it would certainly create a pretty epic atmosphere.

“Maybe just having the tee times starting a bit earlier on Sunday would allow for, I don’t know, a nine-hole better-ball, two players best-ball sort of playoff format.

“So, I think that would be a lot more exciting than just that’s a tie like: ‘Oh, such-and-such retain the Cup.’ I don’t think that’s the best thing.”

The debate will go on, even in the European team room.

The Ryder Cup is two weeks away and Team USA’s players couldn’t be more excited. A: They’ll soon be playing in the Ryder Cup. And B: They won’t have to answer questions about Justin Thomas anymore.

The two-time major champ has gotten by far the most scrutiny of either team’s six captain’s picks. And for good reason following a PGA Tour season in which he failed to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs for the first time in his career.

But this was also the first time that post-season cut-off came at No. 70 instead of 125. And when it was Max Homa’s turn to talk about JT during his press conference at this week’s Fortinet Championship he pointed that out. But first, he pointed something else out in typical Max Homa fashion.

Q: If I had told you at last year’s Fortinet, your defending champ media day, that Justin Thomas a year from now would be 71st in the FedExCup, what would you have said?
MAX HOMA: I think it would be weird if you just came up and told me that, I guess, would be the first thing.

Great point. Max Homa is a funny guy! But also in typical Homa fashion, he then gave a very smart, thoughtful answer. Watch the entire exchange here:

“Golf’s really hard, and I think 71st isn’t awful I don’t think,” Homa continued. “I think it’s a testament to how great of a golfer he is. Like 71st we can all be oohing and aahing like it’s the worst thing ever, like how could you possibly be 71st? That’s a testament to how great he is.

“I know Justin wants to play better obviously, and he obviously is very capable of it, but I don’t think 71st is this awful season that we can raise our nose up to and say how could you ever play so poorly,” Homa added. “I thought he played just fine.”

Well said, Max, and good luck in your attempt to three-peat in Napa. Although, the better you play, the more (JT) questions you’ll probably have to answer.

Mike Mulholland

It was only two weeks ago that Viktor Hovland won the Tour Championship/FedEx Cup title in a runaway by five strokes over Xander Schauffele. Well, now we’re back, the PGA Tour starting anew with the FedEx Cup Fall at the Fortinet Championship. Players status in the 2024 FedEx Cup points race isn’t at stake this week in Napa, California, but there is plenty on the line as Joel Beall spelled out in this primer about the next seven tour events. For the first time the autumn events serve as their own stand-alone series, with FedEx Cup points from earlier in the year carrying over. Tour pros who finished outside the top 70 on the FedEx Cup points list will use these events to make sure they stay inside the top 125 at autumn’s end and keep their PGA Tour cards for 2024. And if those pros who finish the autumn between 61st and 70th in the points earn spots into the first two “signature” events of the 2024 tour season.

He may not be playing for a card, but Max Homa is playing for something pretty rare at Silverado this week. The 32-year-old will have the chance to win his third straight Fortinet title. This would make Homa the first golfer since Steve Stricker at the John Deere Classic (in 2009-11) to win the same PGA Tour event three years in a row after down-to-the-wire victories over both Maverick McNealy in 2021 and Danny Willett in 2022. It’s also his chance to warm up before the Ryder Cup. He’ll be joined by fellow Americans Justin Thomas, captain Zach Johnson and vice-captain Stewart Cink.

Zach Johnson and Max Homa. PGA Tour

There wasn’t any pressure for Max Homa during Zach Johnson’s Team USA Ryder Cup announcements. At the No. 5 spot in the US rankings, the 32-year-old had an automatic bid to Marco Simone and seemingly didn’t even watch the captain’s picks livestream. He did miss something crucial, however, as Zach Johnson referred to Homa as the team’s “prom king”.

Why exactly? Great question.

The confounding “prom king” label comes in around the two-minute mark as Zach Johnson breaks down the squad. It arrives with a smirk and then we move on just like that.

This is somehow both a compliment (?) and deeply confusing as no one, most notably Homa, knew what Johnson meant. In a back-and-forth exchange with Golf’s Claire Rogers, Homa seems enthusiastic about the new moniker despite having no clue about what it’s referring to.

“Haha what does that even mean??,” Homa asks. “Brb going to tell everyone who turned me down for a date in high school that they were wrong after all.”

It could be much worse for Homa — making Team USA and being referred to as a “prom king” — but we’re sure that Homa will ask Johnson what the heck he meant sooner or later.

Dylan Buell

The greens on the North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club are tricky. Or so we hear. In fact, they are so diabolical that Max Homa said that they remind him of the greens at Augusta National, which we all know is the place where three putts hold a convention.

We ain’t buying it. Because what Homa did on Friday in the second round of the BMW Championship just couldn’t be done if the greens are as difficult as he and his PGA Tour brethren claim. Homa collected 10 birdies and posted a course-record 62 to seize the lead in the second FedEx Cup playoff event.

You have to be unconscious to make 10 birdies at Olympia Fields. You also have to be very good. Homa was both. It might not have been the best putting day of his life, but it ranked up there as the best he’s ever had on greens that induce vertigo.

“I don’t know. I’d like to think I’ve been better before,” he said, pondering, “but probably not. I can’t think of where that might be.”

At 10-under 130, Homa holds a two-stroke lead over Chris Kirk and is three ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick and Open champion Brian Harman. He built that lead by making 135 feet of putts on 26 whacks. He gained 4.314 strokes on the greens, which, of course, was tops in the field.

Have a day @MaxHoma23 ? pic.twitter.com/o9jx93x4eT

— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 18, 2023

Impressive stuff. But to understand how he did it, you have to pull back the camera lens to take in the full picture. Homa hit 10 fairways, which was a huge key, he said. That set up hitting 16 greens in regulation, and it mattered more where he put the ball in relation to the hole as opposed to simply how close. (To wit: he ranked 34th out of 49 players in proximity.)

What Homa did was execute in a way his opponents attempted but failed. He gave himself manageable looks. And then he managed to make a bunch of them.

As World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler said after a one-under 69: “It’s just hard to put the ball in the right spots to get the uphill putts.”

Homa had no such issues. Even when he left himself 10-20 feet, he was seeing good lines. He converted six putts outside 10 feet. Not that he could entirely avoid the “odd” and “awkward” little ones, but the California native ranks ninth on tour this season in strokes gained/putting, so he cleaned those up, too.

“I’ve been putting great all year, but it was helpful, like I said, I was in the fairway a lot, so I was able to be a bit more particular of where I was leaving it,” he said. “When you’re in the rough, you’re just trying to hack it on to the green or somewhere near it, so I think that helped a lot because I made a couple sidewinders, of course, but for the most part I did feel like I had a lot easier putts than I had yesterday.”

Homa was aware that he was on the way to breaking the course record, but he had a pretty good idea from another source just how well he was rolling it.

“Yeah, sometimes you’re just zoning, but I knew I was making a lot,” Homa said. “I heard the standard bearer say something about how he’s getting tired because he had to change the numbers on our thing so much because Pat [Cantlay] was making a lot, too. It was just a crazy day.”

Crazy good, in fact.
