The Allegria team celebrate with the Egypt Troon Cup

By Matt Smith
The second edition of the Egypt Troon Cup saw The Allegria and Madinaty Golf Club, two flagship properties managed and operated by Troon, once again go head to head in Cairo.

The matchplay clash took place at Madinaty GC with 20 members representing each club in a Ryder Cup format.

The fixture was a close-run spectacle with Allegria just managing to hold off their rivals in a friendly atmosphere, with the winning team receiving medals and allowing them bragging rights for the second year in a row as they retained the trophy.

Madinaty will not have to wait long to get revenge however as the rematch is already scheduled for September at Allegria’s Greg Norman Signature Course.

This tournament is beginning to foster a friendly social aspect between the clubs, where members benefit from Troon Advantage rates at a second course. The Allegria is located close to the Great Pyramids of Giza, while Madinaty lies to the east of Cairo, close to Cairo International Airport.

Josh North, General Manager of Madinaty, said: “Despite the result, all of us at Madinaty Golf Club have really enjoyed working so closely with team at The Allegria. Once again, two Troon-managed golf clubs have come together to create a unique experience for our local golfers to enjoy. Thanks must go to our agronomy team for ensuring the golf course was in peak condition for this fixture. However, next time we’ll really mean business to prevent a dreaded Allegria hat trick.”

Madinaty Golf Club, which opened in late 2020, is already playing a very active role in the Egyptian golf scene, having hosted the prestigious Egyptian Amateur Championship and implemented a fantastic grow the game programme of ‘Girls Go Golf’ bringing over 50 ladies together to introduce them to the game of golf.

If you look closely you might notice the members at Allegria Golf Club, a Greg Norman Signature-design attached to one of Cairo’s most exclusive residential communities, walking about with a little extra verve in their steps.

That’s because they overcame visiting Madinaty Golf Club in the inaugural Egypt Troon Cup, a special match held on the opening day of the recent Ryder Cup.

In what Troon International are promising to be the first of many planned events between the two Troon-managed clubs, hosts Allegria triumphed with a tight 1.5 point advantage after 20 players represented each club.

A rematch has already been scheduled but Madinaty Golf Club will still have to wait until March for their shot at revenge.

“All of us at Madinaty Golf Club are extremely excited about our collaboration with The Allegria,” said Josh North, General Manager of Madinaty Golf Club.

“It is great to see two Troon managed golf clubs come together and put on unique events like this for our memberships. It was fantastic to see friendly rivalry on and off the golf course and we look forward to bringing the cup home to Madinaty in March!”.

Troon International Executive Vice-President Mark Chapleski was on hand to present the silverware.

“We have been involved with The Allegria since the start, 13 years ago and it was fantastic to see this event come to fruition with our wonderful new addition Madinaty Golf Club,” Chapleski said. “Egypt is a superb golf destination and Troon look forward to continuing to deliver superior playing surfaces and service at these two premier golf facilities”.

By Kent Gray
Dream debuts are clearly in vogue on the MENA Tour by Arena.

While a second successive 64 saw Englishman Harry Ellis extend his overnight lead from one stroke to two over Swede Jesper Alm, it is the performance of Issa Abou El Ela that has caught much of the attention at the Al Ain Open by Arena.

The 24-year-old Egyptian marked his opening round 66 with a hole-in-one on Al Ain Equestrian Shooting and Golf Club’s par-3 15th on Monday and went a shot lower on Tuesday to move to -9, just three strokes adrift of Ellis heading into today’s final round.

Abou El Ela found himself amid a four-way tie for the third-place alongside Sweden’s Gustav Kocken (65) and amateurs Josh Hill (66) and Curtis Knipes (64) and in with a chance of emulating Robin ‘Tiger’ Williams who captured the autumn swing’s opening event, the Journey to Jordan #2 Championship, in his maiden MENA Tour start earlier this month.

His debut on the regional Pro-Am circuit perhaps shouldn’t come as such a great surprise given Abou El Ela’s pedigree mind you. The Madinaty Golf Club member from Cairo is the son of Amr Abou El Ela, winner of seven Pan Arab Championships and one of the most respected names in Middle East & North African golf.

With his father watching, Abou El Ela played steady golf with six birdies and a solitary bogey.

“I played just one bad hole and I made a bogey there (on the 9th). Otherwise, it was a slightly boring round with lots of fairways and greens. I am really enjoying my first start on the MENA Tour and I am excited I have a chance tomorrow. I just want to stay positive,” he said.

After two 64s, Englishman Harry Ellis has the chance to become the MENA Tour’s 21st wire-to-wire winner on Wednesday. (Photo: Joy Chakravarty/MENA Tour)

Kicking on from his T-2 placing in Abu Dhabi a fortnight ago, Ellis again went bogey-free to move to 12-under par 128 with his two 64s. Unlike the first round where he managed a solitary birdie on the back nine, the Southampton 24-year-old made three on either half of the pa 70 layout on Tuesday.

“It was important for me to get off to a good start and carry on that momentum from yesterday, and I managed to get an early birdie on the 10th, which was playing very long and into the wind,” said Ellis, who received a message from former world No1 Justin Rose on Twitter after the round.
