Lucas Herbert. Jed Jacobsohn

It was Lucas Herbert’s first competitive start in two months and an impressive one at that, making 144 feet of putts en route to an opening 63 at the Fortinet Championship. But after his round Herbert’s score became secondary when the Aussie described what spurred the mini-sabbatical.

Herbert, speaking to the media at Silverado Resort in Napa, California, explained his absence from the tour — he had not played since the Open Championship in mid-July — was not injury related. Instead, Herbert had to walk away from the sport, fed up with his game and what the game had made him become.

“From the outside it doesn’t look like the greatest decision to make,” Herbert said, “but I really needed the reset.”

Herbert, 27, has four professional wins around the world, including the 2020 Dubai Desert Classic and earlier this year at the DP World Tour’s ISPS Handa Championship. He’s reached as high as No. 40 in the Official World Golf Ranking. But following the ISPS Handa victory Herbert went into a slump, missing the cut in four of his next six starts. Entering the Scottish Open, Herbert told himself if he wasn’t inside the top 100 of the FedEx Cup standings after the Scottish and Open Championship, it was time to take a break.

Herbert finished T-60 at the Scottish, and a Friday 76 at Royal Liverpool ended his Open weekend early. He left England 146th in the standings and in desperate need of a respite.

“Golf’s been getting me down pretty hard this year. It was just a tough stretch there where I had a lot going on both in my life and on the golf course as well,” Herbert said. “Yeah, it sucked, I’d love to be here or up on the FedEx Cup standings as we speak, but hopefully taking that good break, refreshing, have a little reset gives me a better chance to play well in the fall season and get some better results and get into the bigger events again next year.”

Herbert later added: “I’ve had to deal with a lot off the golf course and it felt like I was kind of idling at 80 per cent when I did get on the course.” Herbert did not specify the nature of the off-the-course matters, only saying, “Just didn’t have any space for things to go wrong, I didn’t have any space to deal with that.”

Herbert said he used the downtime to meet his girlfriend’s family in Maine, and messed around with a guitar that he admittedly is “not really good” at. He had bought a house earlier this year that he never had the time to get organised. But for most of that stretch Herbert didn’t touch a club, only beginning to practise after the Tour Championship had ended.

The issue, Herbert explained, had to deal with expectations. Both externally and internally that only compounded when things weren’t going right inside the ropes. The weight became so intense that Herbert said it was changing him and for the worse.

“I think I’d become probably a bitter and spiteful person,” Herbert said. “Not over the top, but I didn’t like the version of myself I look back on and see at the Open Championship. I think I was wound up pretty tight and kind of lashed out at people around me too quickly, too easy.”

Herbert has a bit of latitude, his tour card secured for next season thanks to his win in the autumn of 2021 at the Bermuda Championship. Besides, even though he entered Napa with low expectations, he’s confident enough in his game that it will return. That’s why his attention this fall is elsewhere.

“I was speaking to one of the rules officials earlier in the week, I felt like if I could just come out here and be like a better person, the golf game’s kind of the next thing, but like just being a better person I think to the people around me, my relationships, you know, family, friends, that only benefits,” Herbert said. “And yeah, that was sort of maybe all I cared about coming here this week. And it’s really nice to shoot 63, but I’m going to do my best to go out there with the same attitude tomorrow and that is the main focus of the week.”

It’s been a wild month for Lucas Herbert. First, he missed the Masters. That was on him for being one spot outside the top 50 on the Official World Golf Ranking for the final cut-off.

Then, the Australian missed a connecting flight from New York to Japan for the DP World Tour’s ISPS Handa Championship. That one was on the weather gods in Florida, who provided some chaos for Herbert when trying to make the 7,000-mile journey from the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage in South Carolina to Japan. On top of it all, Herbert missed the Wednesday pro-am and was not able to see the Ishioka Golf Club course before the tournament.

Still, somehow, Herbert found himself in a playoff at the end of the week after shooting a final-round 67. He missed the fairway, by a lot, in the second playoff hole against Canada’s Aaron Cockerill, who shot a final-round 68. The pair was tied after regulation at 15-under.

But in those trees right of Ishioka’s 18th, Herbert found some luck. His ball had landed on the cart path, allowing him to take a free drop with a clear shot to the green.

A superb birdie on the second play-off hole to secure victory ?

Congratulations @lhgolf5 ?#ISPSHandaChampionship pic.twitter.com/56WThJKtw8

— DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) April 23, 2023

After a crafty recovery, Herbert had a birdie putt from close range, which he drained to secure his third career DP World Tour title.

“It feels pretty good,” Herbert said of his miraculous birdie to defeat Cockerill. “I hit that tee shot and thought that might be the end for us. To get it in close, it just felt like if I didn’t take that chance, it was going to fall away and potentially hurt me later. I knew I had to take advantage when I had it.”

Herbert began the final round on Sunday by making birdie from a fairway bunker on the first, before bagging an eagle on the par-5 fifth. He fell back into a share of the lead with bogeys on Nos. 8 and 11 but rebounded each time with birdies. Herbert negotiated a series of testing two-putts from long-range coming home, before leaving a birdie putt short on the 72nd hole that was for victory, relegating him into the playoff.

Having not seen the course before the tournament, Herbert credited his caddie, Nick Pugh, for scouting Ishioka, since he was able to arrive in Japan before Herbert.

“He’s one of the best caddies out here. He works so hard and this week is proof of that,” Herbert said. “He knew exactly what line to take off every tee and where to aim my approaches. I didn’t play a practice round at all. He deserves that [18th hole] flag he’s got over there.”

That winning feeling ?#ISPSHandaChampionship pic.twitter.com/AUZR3uAll4

— DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) April 23, 2023

Herbert’s third DP World Tour win follows victories at the 2020 Dubai Desert Classic and 2021 Irish Open. Later that year, he transitioned to the PGA Tour and won its Bermuda Championship. With the win in Japan, Herbert will rise to No. 42 on the OWGR and fourth in the Race to Dubai standings.

“It’s a real honour just to be back in Japan and win as well,” said Herbert, who is an ambassador for ISPS Handa, the tournament’s title sponsor. “I’ve come here so many times and loved it so to get back here and win, it means a lot. I think it’s cool to be able to win everywhere and have a lot of good memories from all the spots in the world where you have played.”

It was perhaps ironic that Herbert was awarded a green robe for his victory. While it may not completely make up for missing a chance to play for a green jacket earlier in the month, it did bring his hectic April to a nice close.

If you don’t count a pro-am that Lucas Herbert won in his hometown in Australia in early January, the 27-year-old’s 2023 debut will come at the DP World Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic later this month, an event he won in 2020. After that, the 2021 Bermuda Championship winner will make his first PGA Tour start of the year at the WM Phoenix Open in early February. In between, though, Herbert will be one of three PGA Tour members who are allowed to tee it up in the Saudi International, a $5 million event on the Asian Tour that is sponsored by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which also is the financial backer of LIV Golf.

Recently, the PGA Tour granted Herbert, PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Cameron Young and multiple tour winner Cameron Champ conflicting-event releases to play in the Saudi International. It’s held at Royal Greens Golf Club in King Abdullah Economic City and runs at the same time as the PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am. Herbert, Champ and Young are entered in the field according to the Asian Tour’s website, thanks to a provision in the PGA Tour Player Handbook and Tournament Regulations that allows players who hit the minimum 15 starts to apply for three conflicting-event releases per season. They are required to give the PGA Tour 45 days’ notice, while those pros who tee it up at the Saudi International will be required to play the Pebble Beach Pro-Am twice in the next three years.

Herbert has played each edition of the Saudi International since it debuted as a DP World Tour event in 2019, with a best finish of 21st last year. This year, his reasons for playing are no different: he has permission from the tour, it’s lucrative, and it’s complementary to his schedule. Saudi International tournament organisers have also been known to roll out the red carpet for top players, including appearance fees and travel costs, such as flying them on to their next tournament.

“Some of the reasons were financial, and some of them not financial … it’s going to be a strong field, so there’ll be good World Ranking points,” Herbert told Golf Digest. “The tournament is a short flight from Dubai, which is where I’m starting my season. The event takes good care of us. A lot of things added up to make sense to play it. After that, I’m looking forward to playing the WM Phoenix Open and then [the Genesis Invitational] at Riviera. It’s going to be an exciting season on the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.”

What is different for the 2023 Saudi International is that LIV Golf is now up and running. It is understood some players signed event contracts with the Saudi International to play a certain number of editions. For those who joined LIV Golf, it was a separate contract to their LIV agreement. All 48 players who competed in LIV Golf’s season-closing Team Championship in Miami in October will be among the 126-man field in Dubai, including LIV big-name signings such as Cameron Smith, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau.

World No. 64 Herbert, whose lone PGA Tour win came in the 2021 Bermuda Championship, has now played several events with LIV Golf members in the field, including the DP World Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA at Wentworth in September, and the Australian PGA and Open late in 2022. LIV golfers have been temporarily able to play on the DP World Tour due to a UK sports arbitration court ruling. Despite some tension at Wentworth, Herbert said his experience at those tournaments had been business as usual.

“Once we’re out there playing it doesn’t feel any different,” Herbert said. “It’s a 72-hole event and I’ll be trying to win. You might read about some added tension in some media reports, but I don’t think there will be any. It will just feel like you’re seeing players you haven’t seen in a while, and that happens all the time. The nature of pro golf is you don’t see a lot of players all that much anyway. It’s not like a team sport. You can play on the same tour as someone, but play an opposite schedule to them and hardly ever see them. At Wentworth and at the Aussie events, I don’t think anything had changed.”

Some players who competed in last year’s Saudi International left for LIV Golf, such as Johnson, Smith, DeChambeau and six-time major winner Phil Mickelson. The 2022 Saudi International winner, Harold Varner, also joined LIV. But several players who teed up in Saudi Arabia last year didn’t join LIV, such as Tony Finau, Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood.

By Evin Priest
Lucas Herbert’s hopes of using the Australian summer of golf to climb back inside the top 50 on the World Rankings in time for a Masters invitation have taken a blow after he withdrew due to injury midway through Australian PGA Championship.

Herbert “twinged” his back on the range before the second round at Royal Queensland on Friday and had taken anti-inflammatory tablets. The 26-year-old was playing with 2006 US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy and overnight co-leader Jason Scrivener but managed just 10 holes before withdrawing.

The 26-year-old Australian was struggling with back pain earlier in the week and had opened tournament with a one-over 72 on Thursday. After his WD, Herbert had immediate treatment on his lower back from his physiotherapist

Herbert said his decision to pull out of the tournament was aimed at preventing long-term damage and to be prepared for next week’s Australian Open.

MORE: Cam Smith’s emotional triumph on Return to Oz

“I twinged my back this morning on the range,” Herbert said. “I lost a lot of power in my swing. I tried everything I could to get going, I really wanted to keep playing and try and finish and make the cut and work my way up on the weekend. But I was getting told by people much smarter than me that I should give it some rest and allow it to recover for next week, that potentially I could do some damage longer term. It’s annoying, because I don’t think I’ve pulled out of a tournament mid-round. I’ll do everything I can to get right for next week.”

Herbert made his debut at Augusta National last April after winning the 2021 Butterfield Bermuda Championship on the PGA Tour, his first after notching two wins on the DP World Tour in 2020 and 2021. The PGA Tour win moved Herbert to a career high of World No. 40.

But Herbert had dropped to No. 55 in the OWGR before the Australian PGA this week and needs to be inside the top 50 at the end of the year to earn a likely invitation to the 2023 Masters. Top 50 at the end of the year ranking would also get him into the US Open and Open Championship.

Herbert will have next week’s Australian Open, being held at Kingston Heath and Victoria GC, to have another crack at World Ranking points before shutting it down for 2022. The next World Ranking window to receive a Masters invite is at the end of March.

By Evin Priest
Lucas Herbert thought he had a strong case to be a captain’s pick for Trevor Immelman’s International team in the lead up to last September’s Presidents Cup. Herbert had won the PGA Tour’s Bermuda Championship late in 2021, which came after two wins on the DP World Tour in the two years before that. The 26-year-old finished the 2021-22 PGA Tour season ranked No. 1 for strokes gained/putting, and he registered top-15 finishes at the PGA Championship at Southern Hills and Open Championship at St Andrews this year.

It’s safe to say he was not happy when he missed out on one of six captain’s picks for the biennial team event at Quail Hollow (six players had already automatically qualified for the Internationals).

“Yeah, I was really [annoyed] I didn’t make that team,” Herbert said ahead of this week’s Australian PGA Championship, where he opened the tournament with a one-over-par 72. “I thought I had a lot to offer, and I felt like my form was decent leading up to it. I didn’t think I was out of form, so I was pretty disappointed when I got the call to say that I wasn’t in the team.”

What hurt Herbert’s chances were his tee-to-green stats — he finished the season ranked 159th off the tee and 192nd for approach play — given lengthy Quail Hollow is considered a ball-striker’s paradise. The Internationals fought hard but ultimately lost 17.5-12.5 to a star-studded US side. Herbert was under no pretences that the result would have been any different had he played, but he wanted a chance.

“It’s easy to sit here now and say that I could have offered more than what those guys did, but they obviously think they made the best picks they could leading into that week with the information they had,” Herbert said. “The boys did really well to make it the contest they did, because a week out, the way the press was, they were talking about it being a bit of a whitewash. It was good to see it be a contest. I’d like to think that I’ll play one of these eventually, but yeah, it was pretty disappointing to miss out on that one.”

Herbert has moved on, though. He finished the DP World Tour season at the Nedbank Challenge in South Africa before a few weeks rest in his native Australia. He’s now channeling his energy into using the Australian PGA and next week’s Australian Open in Melbourne, to shoot up the World Ranking in time to receive a Masters invitation for Augusta.

Herbert, who has slipped to world No. 55 down from a career high of No. 40, earned a Masters debut at Augusta this year courtesy of his PGA Tour win at Bermuda. He has yet to qualify for Augusta in 2023, but if he is inside the top 50 in the World Ranking at the end of 2022, he is expected to earn an invite. If that doesn’t come to pass, there is likely to be another World Ranking opportunity to earn an Augusta start at the end of March right before the Masters.

Both Australian events are co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and are fielding top players such as Cameron Smith, Adam Scott, Min Woo Lee, Rasmus and Nicolai Hojgaard, Ryan Fox and others.

“Yeah, absolutely. I’m not really even sure what the points will be worth this week,” he said. “I haven’t really looked at the field enough to know what it would be worth, but I know if I win, I’ll probably move up in the World Ranking, so that’s definitely the focus. Obviously top 50 at the end of the year will get to Augusta, so I’d love to get inside that and go back there again.

“I feel like my game’s trending in the right direction at the moment, so whether it’s at Christmas or one of the next cut-offs (March) for the World Ranking, I will be playing at Augusta in April, I’d like to think that. Obviously I can’t control everything but I do feel like there’s not as much pressure as probably what it looks like.”

By Evin Priest
There are two simple reasons why Lucas Herbert will not defend his title at the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship this week: He’s a member of the wedding party for a close friend who is getting married in his native Australia, and he’s also taking some rest before a last-minute bid to make the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

Herbert won last year’s Bermuda event at Port Royal Golf Club, holding off a late-charging Patrick Reed. It was Herbert’s maiden tour PGA Tour win after two career wins on the DP World Tour.

“I had my friend’s wedding, and I was in the groom’s party, and that was it for me in the US this year. I’m not going to head back to the States until the new year,” Herbert told Golf Digest over the phone from his hometown of Bendigo. “I would have loved to have defended. Hopefully I get back there in years to come.”

Herbert won the Irish Open on the DP World Tour in 2021 before transitioning to the PGA Tour, where he earned his card through Korn Ferry Finals before winning quickly in Bermuda in the autumn. But Herbert has only played five DP World Tour events this year, including the Open Championship in which he finished tied for 15th, and so his Race to Dubai ranking has dropped to 60th. As such, Herbert will head to South Africa next month to compete in the Nedbank Golf Challenge in a bid to climb inside the top 50 who qualify for the DP World Tour finale in Dubai a week later. Herbert has a good record in Dubai, having won the Dubai Desert Classic in 2020, albeit on a different course.

“Those two tournaments are really special. I love playing the Nedbank, and Dubai is a great place to play,” he said. “It means a lot to be among the best 50 DP World Tour players who make that final. I’ll probably need a really good result at the Nedbank to jump inside the top 50, but I’m confident I can do it.”

Should Herbert qualify for the DP World Tour finale, the 26-year-old will head straight back to Australia to contest the Australian PGA Championship the next week, at Royal Queensland in Brisbane. Then he’ll tee up in the Australian Open, which will be held across two iconic Melbourne Sandbelt courses, Victoria Golf Club and Kingston Heath in early December.

By Dave Shedloski
Lucas Herbert, four strokes behind Taylor Pendrith after 54 holes of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, figured that foul weather on Sunday at Port Royal Golf Course might give him a fair chance at his first PGA Tour title.

Even though he missed the cut in his only two previous starts to the season.

Even though he had been struggling with his swing and needed a fix-me-up from his longtime coach, Dom Azzopardi, to correct a takeaway problem that resulted in “leaks” and “double-crosses, which he said, “is not a really good way to play golf.”

Um, leaks and double-crosses do not sound like good ways to do anything.

You either have to be supremely confident or slightly masochistic to want to take a recently retooled swing into the kind of weather that greeted players in Bermuda. The conditions prompted the tour to schedule an early start off two tees, but sideways rain still forced one brief suspension of play and winds gusting to 30 mph made the tour’s second shortest course (just 6,828 yards, par 71) added a layer of sensory stimulation to a final round in which 12 of the top 16 players on the leader board had yet to win on the PGA Tour.

For Herbert, 25, we’ll go with Door No. 1. He’s a confident dude, exhibiting the kind of swagger that rises up commensurate to the pressure. His final-round two-under 69 was good enough for a one-stroke victory over Danny Lee and Patrick Reed, and while this was his breakthrough win on the PGA Tour, it was his third in the last two years after European Tour victories in the Dubai Desert Classic and Irish Open.

“I felt like I grinded really well early and I had the right attitude going into the day that it wasn’t going to be easy,” said the native of Bendigo, Australia, who is the fourth straight tour winner of international heritage. “Obviously on the range it was … I don’t think we even hit drivers on the range because just couldn’t hit it, it was just pointless, so you just knew it was going to be one of those days where you had to battle really, really hard.”

And so Herbert did in posting 15-under 269 to earn $1.17 million, a berth in the Masters, the Players and PGA Championship, and a spot in the top 50 in the world, moving to a career-best 43rd.

A three-hole stretch starting at the par-4 12th proved pivotal in the outcome.

Leading by a stroke over Pendrith, Lee played quickly and sloppily on the way to a double-bogey while Herbert drilled home a 20-footer for birdie to leapfrog into the lead at 15 under. Herbert bogeyed the par-3 13th—“and I don’t think I hit a bad shot,” he said—but he bounced back by catching an edge on a 35-footer at the 14th to restore his lead. Lee, meanwhile followed with bogeys at 13 and 14, a costly stretch for the veteran playing on a minor medical extension. He managed to respond by rattling off three straight birdies, but had to settle for a share of second place with Reed at 14-under 270, when a solo second would have sewn up his card.

“A lot of good and a lot of bad. I fought really hard for it, just 12 through 14 was a very, very tough stretch for me,” Lee said. “After that I just bite my tongue, and I just try to grind it out. There’s so many times when that time comes or whenever that disappointment happened, I just kind of half-assed it all the way in, so this time I didn’t want to do that. I gave 120 percent all the way in.”

Cliff Hawkins
Patrick Reed charged on Sunday with a 65.

Reed, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 24, birdied his final two holes for a 65. Only Scott Stallings, who somehow found 10 birdies in the wind and rain for an insane 62, scored lower on the blustery day. Stallings tied for fifth with Pendrith, who somehow found no birdies in a 76 after tying the 54-hole tournament record of 196.

While on the subject of medical extensions, we pause to update the status of Jim Knous, who was playing in his final event on his extension and had to finish at least solo 67th for conditional status. Ranked 695 in the world, Knous, 31, made a gut-check eagle on his penultimate hole on Friday to make the cut, and on Sunday gave his gut another check. After playing his opening nine holes in four over, Knous rallied for an inward 33 amid the breezy conditions to shoot a one-over 72 and ended up T-57 with a 283 total.

“The emotions were going crazy today,” Knous said. “Yeah, greatest top-60 of all time. [But] job’s not done. Obviously conditional status, the ones I get in I have to be ready, and I plan to be ready and go low and have chances.”

After missing the cut at the Fortinet Championship and the Sanderson Farms Championship, Herbert wasn’t quite sure what kind of game he was bringing to the British island territory, close to where, legend has it, ships and planes mysteriously disappear. So do 54-hole leads, by the way; no Saturday leader has become a Sunday champion in the tournament’s three years.

With two early bogeys to his opening round on Thursday, Herbert already was thinking about just how soon he might disappear from the British island territory. “I think,” Herbert recalled, “I was sitting under a little palm tree on the side of the 12th green at two-over through three thinking, I’ll tell you what, if this wind doesn’t die down or this weather improves, then we might be packing the bags early because this is tough.

“Yeah, it turned around pretty quick, but golf’s one of those sports,” he continued. “There’s endless of stories of guys that have started off with three straight bogeys, that have been four-over through nine and then come back to win. So I tried not to get too caught up in that early and just make sure that I just keep fighting. Maybe 30th place is a good result, maybe just making the cut’s a good result. I tried to really focus on that, and it just got better and better as the week went on.”

Herbert earned his card by finishing fourth in the Albertson’s Boise Open, the opening event of the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, which ensured his participation on the tour—if he could just get into the field. Fortunately, Bermuda had some openings. Even surplus spots. The Aussie native once again showed his knack for timing. And game management.

He didn’t realize that his victory, in just his 19th tour start, got him into the Masters. Needless to say, the man with wins on three different continents in the last two years has a lot to look forward to on the U.S. mainland.

“Definitely gets me into the Masters? OK. I mean, the next 12 months are going to be really cool,” he said. “I’ve never played Augusta, so being able to play the Masters is going to be pretty cool. Getting to play … in a few of these events that I’ve watched growing up on TV, it’s just going to be a cool experience. No matter how I play, it’s just going to be phenomenal to play in those tournaments. It’s going to be lots of fun.”

He probably won’t even mind if the wind blows at a few of them.

“Wind brings out the best players,” Herbert claimed, and he could point to himself as the latest example.

Lucas Herbert was flying high Sunday night after clinching his PGA Tour card for the first time. By Monday night, he was just flying in the wrong direction.

The 25-year-old Australian made the ultimate travel mistake by showing up in the wrong city for this week’s Korn Ferry Tour event. Make that the wrong state. Actually, make that the completely wrong part of the country.

So how did this happen? Apparently, there’s a Columbus in Georgia as well as the more well-known capital of Ohio, which is the site of this week’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship. And apparently, Herbert mixed them up when he booked his flight. Whoops.

Here’s the two-time European Tour winner talking about his colossal fail on Wednesday:

Kudos to him for owning up to it, because he’s going to be hearing about that for a long time. And kudos to PGA Tour/Korn Ferry Tour digital content guy Kevin Prise for absolutely hammering Herbert with questions about his blunder.

And if this scenario sounds familiar, that’s because it’s basically a scene from “Tommy Boy”:

Amazing. The worst part for Herbert is that he took the late flight so he was stuck in Columbus, Ga., overnight. Not that there’s anything in Columbus, Ga. I’m sure it’s quite lovely there this time of year. Well, minus the oppressive heat and humidity.

In any event, at least Herbert won’t miss his Thursday tee time at the second event of the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, and he even got a nice chuckle out of the experience. As he acknowledges in the video, it’s easy to laugh when you’ve already locked up your PGA Tour card for next season. But before he makes that leap to the big leagues, he just might want to consider enlisting a travel agent.
