Callaway Golf is not above trying a good idea more than once. That’s the thought behind the company’s re-launch of its custom-option-only Apex Black irons. The Apex Black made its debut last year as a limited-edition offering that sold out in relatively short order, making their reappearance a logical step.

The black PVD aesthetic includes specially developed all-black shafts (True Temper XP 95 stepless or UST Recoil). A blacked-out Lamkin UTX grip completes the look. In addition to appealing to certain player preferences, the dark finish is designed to reduce glare. The irons feature all the technological horsepower of the Apex, including a cupface design on the 3- through 7-irons where the face wraps around the crown, sole and the entire perimeter and is fused to a separate forged 1025 carbon steel frame and hosel for additional ball speed. The set then shifts to a face insert and a revised, more compact shape for the 8-iron through gap wedge to promote distance control and feel.

The Apex Black irons can be ordered beginning August 18 in the U.S. ($1,300 for steel; $1,500 for graphite, with an extensive list of no upcharge custom shafts).
