By Keely Levins
The 2017 LPGA season saw 22 different winners, showcasing the depth of talent on the tour. Two events into 2018, the new season looks like it could play out in similar fashion. At the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open, South Korean rookie Jin Young Ko won wire to wire, shooting 14 under to win by three strokes. The win came with a bit of history as Ko became only the second player to win in her first start as a member of the LPGA Tour, joining Beverly Hanson who did it in 1951 while winning the Eastern Open.

There is a caveat to Ko’s feat; the 22-year-old won the LPGA’s KEB Hana Bank Championship last October when she wasn’t an official member of the LPGA. That victory guaranteed her LPGA membership for the 2018 season.

Suffice it to say, Ko didn’t play like an anxious rookie when she teed it up at Kooyonga Golf Club in Adelaide, opening with a 65 to take an early lead. Even heading into the final round, Ko said that she didn’t feel overly nervous. She had the cushion of a four-shot lead, so that helped. The only anxious moment came when she was made aware of the fact that her win would be historic.

“I tried not to think about it,” Ko admitted.

Ko handled the added pressure with ease, shooting a final-round 69 to win by three over Hyejin Choi. Choi, who is 18 years old, made her name known on the LPGA Tour when she finished second in the 2017 U.S. Women’s Open as an amateur. Choi has since turned professional.

Both Ko and Choi found success on the Korean LPGA Tour before competing in LPGA events. Ko won 10 times on the KLPGA before getting status on the LPGA.

After her win, Ko was asked what her goals are for the season. She said she wanted to earn Rookie of the Year honors. When asked if she’d considered aiming for Player of the Year, she remained modest but certainly not dismissive of the idea.

“No,” she said. “Not yet.”

Winning isn’t anything new for Jin Young Ko. Just winning on the LPGA Tour. The 22-year-old South Korean native who has nine career victories on the KLPGA claimed her first LPGA title on Sunday at the KEB Hana Bank Championship in Incheon. And she did it in dramatic fashion, holding off Sung Hyun Park, the reigning U.S. Women’s Open champ and World No. 2.

Ko never shot worse than a 68 at the Ocean Course at Sky72 Golf & Resort, with rounds of 68-67-66-68 for a 19 under total that edged Park by two strokes, In Gee Chun by three and earned her $300,000.

This was Ko’s third LPGA start, and her lack of experience showed a bit during the first few holes of the final round. She bogeyed the second and third holes, while Park, who had started the day two strokes back, birdied three of her first five holes. It looked like Park, a shoo-in for LPGA rookie-of-the-year honors, was in control of the tournament, where a victory meant she could potentially take of the No. 1 spot in the Rolex Rankings.

But then Ko steadied herself and birdied four of the last five holes. She added two more birdies on the back. Bogeys on 14 and 16 for Park kept her from passing Ko again on the leader board.

“After I made the two bogeys, I had a really long chat with my caddie, Dean, about why I was so nervous,” said Ko, through a translator, after her round. “I realized I had no reason to be nervous, and I was actually putting a lot of pressure on myself. So after that, Dean was there, he kept reminding me that being nervous was quite natural, that I needed to accept those nerves. I think I kept reminding myself of that. I also tried to focus on the fact that even if there are bumps along the way, I can make opportunities to make up for the bumps.”

With the win, Ko has the option to join the LPGA Tour for the rest of this season and also for 2018. She may remain as a non-member for the remainder of 2017, and still obtain membership status next season.

In 2017 on the KLPGA, Ko has won twice and had nine additional top-10s in 18 starts.

Americans Lizette Salas and Marina Alex finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Salas, a member of the winning U.S. Solheim Cup Team, shot 14 under for the week and Alex finished at 13 under.

The LPGA Tour continues their swing in Asia this coming week, as they play the Swinging Skirts LPGA Taiwan Championship in Taipei, Taiwan.

The LPGA closes out its 2017 season with a stretch of six straight tournaments in five countries concluding with the CME Group Tour Championship in Naples, Fla. And Michelle Wie hopes to be a fixture on leader boards for all of them.

The 27-year-old, who has sat out the last six weeks recovering from surgery for an appendectomy, is set to return at this week’s KEB Hana Bank Championship in South Korea, the first of five events in Asia.

The emergency procedure in August caused Wie to withdraw from the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open (she had the operation in Ottawa). She was forced to miss the year’s final major, the Evian Championship, last month and says she only began hitting full shots a few days before flying from the U.S. to Asia for this week’s stop.

It appears from her latest social media post that she’s still working her way back into game shape:

For much of the time she spent recuperating from the procedure, Wie said she wasn’t allowed to pick up anything heavier than 10 pounds. Even so, Wie contends she’ll be ready to go when play begins on Ocean Course at SKY72 Golf & Resort in Incheon.

“I’m just going to try and be patient with myself and take it easy out there and just try to manage how I feel and what not,” Wie said.

She’ll be facing some stiff competition as 15 of the top 16 ranked players in the world will be playing (only Inbee Park will be missing due to injury). The strong field comes despite the heightened political tensions between the U.S. and North Korea.

Wie hasn’t won since her 2014 U.S. Women’s Open triumph, but her 2017 season has been impressive. Wie had six top-five finishes in 18 starts, and moved from No. 186 on the Rolex Rankings in February to No. 31 entering the South Korea event.
