It was a little tougher than it first looked on Tuesday morning, but Team Europe managed to pull through and retain the Junior Solheim Cup for the first time.

Captain Gwladys Nocera’s side had stormed to a five-point lead on Day 1 at La Zagaleta in Spain after the foursomes and fourballs, and — after a valiant effort from the visitors — eventually prevailed 15-9.

Tuesday saw the singles take place, and Europe managed to pick up six wins and one draw to hoist the trophy once again.

Captain Nocera said: “Being a captain is easy when you have a team like this! We really loved the course but I think it was due to a really good preparation. These girls know how to do it and they work really hard. I have to congratulate them for all the work they have put in during the season and over these two days of completion.”

With 12.5 points the target on day two, USA came out fighting as Jasmine Koo defeated Andrea Revuelta (Spain) 2&1 in the opening match.

In match two, Francesca Fiorellini (Italy) made it three wins from three as she beat Anna Davis 5&3 thanks to some incredible iron play.

Team Europe added another shortly after as Nora Sundberg (Sweden) won 4&2 against Gianna Clemente.

Despite needing just two more points to defend their title, a wave of red soon emerged on the scoreboard — Yana Wilson defeated Yana Beeli (Switzerland) on the final hole, Kathryn Ha came from three down to edge past Anna Canado (Spain) with a birdie on the last, and Leigh Chien beat Josefin Widal (Sweden) 3&2.

But with Savannah De Bock (Belgium) continuing her fine form to win 4&3 against Megan Meng, Cloe Amion (Spain) — 1-up on Elizabeth Rudisill coming down the last — was able to two putt for victory to seal the deal.

“This is a dream come true,” Amion said. “Just being here is great but to win is amazing. I didn’t know Savannah had won her match so didn’t realise it was the winning putt! But just getting it in brought so much satisfaction and happiness.”

In the concluding matches, Meja Örtengren found her best form to beat Irene Kim 4&3. Denisa Vodickova won her third match of the week defeating Anna Song 2&1.

Helen Briem (Germany) was narrowly defeated by Ryleigh Knaub 1-up, while Rocio Tojedo, the star of yesterday’s foursomes, halved her match against Asterisk Talley.

A winner in 2021, Briem said: “The first time was special because it was in America, but this one was way better. To win two times in a row is indescribable.

“I think it’s just so cool because we’re all so different. We’re from different countries but fight together. We have so many personalities which is so cool. We were really focused the last few days and the fun part is still to come. I’m really looking forward to the Solheim Cup. It’s going to be a really cool four days.”

LET

Team Europe followed up their Junior Solheim Cup Monday morning foursomes demolition of the Americans with an assured display in the afternon fourballs to open up a commanding 8.5-3.5 lead going into Tuesday’s singles.

Leading by 5.5 to 0.5 points over USA at La Zagaleta, Spain, an entertaining afternoon saw both sides win three matches each to leave the home side needing just four points to retain the trophy on Tuesday.

Despite an emphatic 8&6 victory in morning foursomes, the Spanish duo of Andrea Revuelta and Rocío Toledo were unable to reach the same heights as they were defeated 3&2 by Elizabeth Rudisill and Kathryn Ha.

Also paired together again were Francesca Fiorellini (Italy) and Denisa Vodičková (Czechia), who continued their excellent record together by dispatching Anna Song and Megan Meng 4&3.

“We did a great job,” Fiorellini said, who also won a point alongside Vodičková at the 2021 Junior Solheim Cup. “We played last time together two years ago so we know each other really well.”

While her Czech partner said: “Our energy on the course matches very well so I think we work really great.”

In match three, USA clawed a point back as Gianna Clemente and Yana Wilson defeated Yana Beeli & Anna Cañado 1-up on the final hole.

Having both clinched a point in morning foursomes, Josefin Widal (Sweden) and Cloe Amion (Spain) earned another point for their side winning 2&1 against Asterick Talley and Leigh Chien.

Coined the “dream team”, Savannah de Bock (Belgium) and Helen Briem (Germany) put on the performance of the afternoon carding eight birdies to beat Irene Kim & Ryleigh Knaub 5&4.

“It was amazing,” De Bock said. “The morning with Cloe already great, we played well, but this afternoon with Helen was also really good. We have such a strong team. Whenever I was doing a little less good she was making birdies!

“It’s so great to be here, the team is so great. The course is amazing and I can’t wait for tomorrow.”

Match six then saw Anna Davis and Jasmine Koo come from behind to defeat the Swedish pairing of Meja Örtengren and Nora Sundberg 3&2 to leave the scores at 8.5-3.5 heading into the final day.

Ladies European Tour

Team Europe got off to a near-perfect start in the 2023 Junior Solheim Cup at La Zagaleta, with one of the most lopsided sessions on Monday morning in Spain.

With six foursomes matches done on Day 1, Team Europe have opened up a massive five-and-a-half point lead over their American rivals — with a near clean sweep to get the ball rolling.

Setting the tempo early on were the Spanish duo of Andrea Revuelta and Rocío Toledo, who birdied three of the first four holes to go 4-up before completing the job with an emphatic 8&6 win over Megan Meng and Irene Kim.

Competing in her second Junior Solheim Cup, Revuelta said: “We’re really good friends and we’ve played together before. We just went out there to have fun and play our best, and we seemed to make all our shots. The Americans had a tougher time than us but we’re really happy.”

Rookie Toledo added: “I think the most important thing in foursomes is being friends. We have a lot of confidence. The Junior Solheim Cup has been amazing so far.”

In a very tight second match, Nora Sundberg (Sweden) and Anna Cañado (Spain) secured a half after tying with Yana Wilson and Jasmine Koo.

Francesca Fiorellini (Italy) and Denisa Vodickova (Czech Republic) earned the second full point after defeating Elizabeth Rudisill and Ryleigh Knaub 2&1 on the 17th hole.

Shortly after, the pair of Helen Briem (Germany) and Yana Beeli added another point thanks to a 3&2 victory over Gianna Clemente and Anna Davis — the winner of the 2022 Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

Within minutes, Savannah de Bock (Belgium) and Cloe Amion (Spain) added more blue to the board, winning 2&1 against Anna Song and Kathryn Ha.

The Swedish duo of Meja Örtengren and Josefin Widal then completed a phenomenal foursomes session by defeating Asterisk Talley and Leigh Chien 2&1 on the 17th hole.
