Dubai-based youngster Josh Hill claimed the Dubai Hills Golf Club Men’s Open with a six-under total of 138.

Hill took a three-stroke lead into the second round and a 71 saw him home one stroke ahead of Sam Mullane in the 76-strong field.

Dubai’s Josh Hill goes down fighting at US Amateur Championship

Dubai born-and-bred Josh Hill went down fighting at the US Amateur Championship on Wednesday, suffering a 2&1 loss to Campbell Kremer in the round of 64.

Hill had qualified for the match play section of the tournament by progressing placed T30 after two rounds of stroke play at Ridgewood Country Club and Arcola Country Club in New Jersey.

It was similar bad news for pre-tournament favourite Michael Thorbjornsen in the race to claim the Havemeyer Trophy.

Playing against No. 63-seeded Andrew Von Lossow, Thorbjornsen failed to reach the 17th hole, falling 3&2 to the 34-year-old from Spokane, Washington.

“That was awesome playing Michael,” Von Lossow said. “First time meeting him, had heard about him, and I know he’s a great player. Then seeing how he hits the ball and everything, it was awesome.”

Von Lossow created a bit of a buzz with the colourful shirt he was rocking Wednesday morning during the 15-for-11 playoff to reach the match-play bracket. After making par and advancing, he created far more buzz with his stunning upset of the sixth-ranked amateur in the world.

“Just apply pressure,” Von Lossow said of his strategy. “I didn’t hit every fairway but I could muscle a few out of the rough. Then my caddie, my buddy Brian, he caddies here, Brian Roth, and he got me in the right spots around the greens. Just around here you have to be below the hole or just know if you have more room left or right of the holes. Had a few good numbers on the back nine where I could kind of hit some flighted shots and some full shots.”

Emirates Golf Club hosted the Emirates US Open Championship with 76 golfers competing on the Faldo Course. The overall winners were George Clarke and Lyndon Smith with 46 points. Runner’s up were Anders Kron and Russell Yeomans with 44 points. In third place were Tauseef Khan and Shiba Wahid with 44 points.

72 new National Team graduates at Emirates Golf Federation

Emirates Golf Federation was celebrating its latest National Team graduates, who passed their tests at Abu Dhabi Golf Club this week. There are 72 new additions who will now go on to the next part of their training on their journey in the world of golf.

Dubai’s Josh Hill has once again been chosen to represent England at the European Team Championships taking place at St Leon Rot Golf Club in Germany from July 5 to 9. The English boys team will be up against the finest youngsters from across the continent as 18 teams do battle for the Jean-Louis DuPont Trophy. Trump International’s Hill is 50th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and will join Josh Berry (Doncaster), Frank Kennedy (Trump Jupiter), Dylan Shaw-Radford (Huddersfield), Harley Smith (Rayleigh) and Tyler Weaver (Bury St Edmunds) on the England team.

Dubai-based 16-year-old Chiara Noja showed once again why she is one of the hottest prospects for the future of women’s golf as she bounced back from a rib injury that forced her to miss the Aramco Team Series — London to finish T2 in Belgium and stretch her lead in the Ladies European Tour Access Series Order of Merit. Australia’s Kristalle Blum recorded her first victory on the series at the Golf Vlaanderen LETAS Trophy, one ahead of Noja, local star Sophie Bert and France’s Yvie Chaucheprat and Momoka Kobori from New Zealand. With her runner-up finish, Germany’s Noja continues to dominate the LETAS Order of Merit standings with 1,171.25 points while New Zealand’s Kobori moves to the second spot with 813.75 points.

New look in Muscat

Muscat Hills, the first all-grass 18-hole golf course in Oman, is to reopen next year as Muscat Resorts under the management of Troon Golf. Muscat Hills previously opened in 2009 and closed in 2020, and is set for a new lease of life under the ownership of Ominvest, the largest investment company in Oman.

The conveyor belt of young UAE-based talent continues to roll as Abu Dhabi’s Maya Palanza Gaudin took the title at the US Kids European Championship (Girls, 12-years-old Category) at The Glen Golf Club, North Berwick, outside Edinburgh, Scotland. Born in Ethiopia, the 12-year-old, who has lived in the UAE capital with her parents and younger sister for 10 years, plays off a 2.7 handicap and was the 2021 Ladies champion at Yas Links Golf Club, Abu Dhabi.

Pairs bear fruit at JGE

Jumeirah Golf Estates hosted their Pairs tournament over the Fire Course with 80 golfers competing in a pairs scramble format. Drew Foxcroft and Paul McMahon won on a card playoff with a net 63 (9-under). Runner-ups were Jack Wanliss and Gary Williams. Third place went to Steve Drake and Sheila McIlroy.

In a busy June month, Arabian Ranches also hosted the latest qualifying Round for the UAE Emirates NBD Race to Malaysia ahead of the Emirates Golf Federation-sanctioned national final at Al Hamra Golf Club, Ras Al Khaimah on October 1. The next qualifier is at Al Zorah Golf Club in Ajman on September 18, before the final qualifier at Al Hamra Golf Club on September 25. At the final at Al Hamra, the winners of each of the five divisions will qualify to represent the UAE in the World Final in November in Malaysia.

Dubai’s Josh Hill to represent England at European Team Championships in Germany

Dubai’s Josh Hill has once again been chosen to represent England at the European Team Championships taking place at St Leon Rot Golf Club in Germany from July 5 to 9.

The English boys team will be up against the finest youngsters from across the continent as 18 teams do battle for the Jean-Louis DuPont Trophy.

Trump International’s Hill is 50th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and will join Josh Berry (Doncaster), Frank Kennedy (Trump Jupiter), Dylan Shaw-Radford (Huddersfield), Harley Smith (Rayleigh) and Tyler Weaver (Bury St Edmunds) on the England team.

Hill made quite a stir in the UAE in January when he made the cut in both the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic while playing against some of the world’s finest golfers on the DP World Tour.

“As a club with a focus on competitive golf sport, we have an extensive junior and performance programme. Giving our juniors the chance to watch the creme de la creme from close up at our club and to learn from them is fantastic. It’ll be a wonderful experience and one that’ll instill us with pride,” says Dietmar Hopp, the President and patron of Golf Club St Leon-Rot.

“Particularly pleasing is that we can host the top European teams in the year marking our 25th anniversary as a club. For me, it’ll be a highlight as it’s awe-inspiring watching what the young elite golfers can do on the golf course.

Dubai golfer Toby Bishop swaps clubs for books as exams loom ahead of move to US on scholarship

Toby Bishop is taking a break from golf — but only until his final-year exams are out of the way, as bigger things beckon in the United States. Dubai-bred Welshman Bishop, 18, is studying hard as the dreaded exams loom, but it will be worth the grind as a golf scholarship at the university of Florida awaits after the summer.

“The clubs will be put away for a while now and it is time to hit the books,” Bishop told Golf Digest Middle East on the sidelines of the recent Dubai Golf Trophy at Emirates Golf Club.

“There will probably be more stress than when playing golf actually with all my exams, but once they are done it will be worth it as there are some exciting times ahead.”

Bishop has already been out on a trip to the US to see the set-up at the university he will call home for the next four years.

“I am really excited at the opportunities they have there in Florida,” he said. “They give you every opportunity to make it as a pro on the PGA tour. I went out there on my visit and had a week to see the place and meet the guys. It will be bit difficult to visualise properly until I get there but they are all really good guys to learn from and I need to make the most of the chances I have been offered.”

Fellow Dubai amateur Josh Hill is also heading to the States this summer, and Toby is sure they will stay in touch.

“For sure. We are in the same comp zone so I am sure we will play in a few comps together and compare notes,” he joked.

Bishop also reflected on the landmark moment as two of Dubai’s own step out on the next part of their journey in golf.

“It really highlights the facilities and chances we have here in Dubai,” he said. “I always reflect on how small this country is and to see so many players coming through, firstly with Khalid Yousuf and Ahmad Skaik, and now me and Josh. Hopefully it brings more attention and development to the region and obviously we are proud of what we have done and proud to represent, having grown up here, and fly the UAE flag.

“Hopefully in a couple of years I could get an invite to play in one of the big DP World Tour events and come back here to contend if I play well.

“My parents always joke that I am their mortgage so it will be good to come back and pay them back. But they always support me and I am pretty grateful to have that support as it means I know I have their full backing.”

Golf Digest Middle East enters new era

It is with great excitement and honour that I take over the helm of such a prodigious title as Golf Digest Middle East, and hope to continue
the journey we have all enjoyed under my editorial predecessors Kent Gray and Robbie Greenfield.

These are no small shoes to fill as we have charted the growth of the game over 13 years and 154 editions of the Middle East’s No. 1 golf publication. We will be part of plenty more to come as golf continues to break new ground in the UAE, Middle East and further afield.

More about the ‘new’ soon, but let’s begin with the ‘old’ and familiar, as timely as it is to my own journey thus far.

It is somewhat appropriate that my arrival at Golf Digest Middle East sees the spotlight in the sport dominated by one man — and it isn’t the one that won the Masters title and the famous green at Augusta National in April. Instead it is the man that already has five golf’s most sought-after garments hanging up at home.

The guy who had fans clamouring for a glimpse of his practice-round swing as part of a record-breaking Masters Monday crowd was one of the reasons I got into the sport. He has been hitting fairways, greens and — sometimes shocking — headlines ever since, and well before I first saw him play at the Open Championship at Royal Troon way back in 1997, when I was a beginning to find my way as a young(ish) hack.

Of course, I am referring to Tiger Woods as he once again proved why he is simply in a world of his own on and off the course, just by managing to tee it up at the 86th edition of the Masters last month. Tiger — a man who has made a career out of defying the odds — staged arguably his most astounding chapter yet when he carded a one-under-par 71 on Masters Thursday, only 408 days after he almost lost his legs and his life in a horrendous car crash in Los Angeles.

When Tiger claimed his fifth Masters title and 15th major in staggering style in 2019 following a series of near-career-ending operations on his spine and creaking legs, the question was who, if anyone, could ever top such a comeback.

Well, there simply was only one man who could, and that was Tiger himself.

Even lining up over that first tee shot on the first hole last month on legs that now seem to be more metal than flesh and bone is an astounding achievement in itself, let alone making the cut while honed athletes half his age and less were packing their bags after round two.

Following his 12-over weekend and a 47th-place finish, the six-deep crowds around the 18th were something we usually only witnessed for the outright winner. That says something about Woods’ longevity with the dedicated fans as well as his own body.

Following the Augusta frenzy, Tiger will go back to his more secluded lifestyle, work on strengthening his legs further and await the next circus, perhaps at the US Open or Open Championship. With a quiet schedule and cherry-picked events ahead of the remaining majors this year — including at a happy hunting ground on the Old Course at St Andrews — who is to say the old cat is done just yet?

And on to the ‘new’. We are also witnessing an exciting time closer to home with the next generation. Dubai-based youngsters Josh Hill and Toby Bishop are about to embark on their own journey, breaking new ground for the region, thanks to golf scholarships at the University of Tennessee and University of Florida respectively. We are also watching the emergence of a host of promising Saudi youngsters including Faisal Salhab and Saud Al Shariff, who are making great strides.

As Josh showed at the recent UAE Swing, it seems we are getting ever closer to crowning our own locally created champions.

So as Golf Digest enters a new era, it seems our next generation of hopes from the UAE and beyond are striking out on their own, too.

Dubai amateur Josh Hill is taking his dream Desert Classic debut in stride

You wouldn’t begrudge Josh Hill even a momentary leak of emotion given the amateur’s giddy Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic debut thus far. Instead, the 17-year-old is impressively flat-lining his way through the biggest week of his young career.

A three-under 69 on Saturday made the Dubai-born world record holder one of the more noteworthy climbers on moving day at the $8 million Rolex Series event, up to a share of 23rd place. You may be familiar with a few names surrounding the Trump Dubai club member on the leaderboard: Open champion Shane Lowry and 2020 Dubai victor Lucas Herbert are also on three-under. Former Masters champion Adam Scott and Collin Morikawa, the current world No.2? They’re only a single shot to the good.

Excited? Hill surely must be but it’s hard to tell with that veteran game face masking his actual adolescent one. Like he did at Yas Links last week, when Hill made three birdies in his final four holes to make a first DP World Tour cut on the number, he’s taking it all in his stride. When you’ve been on the fast-track to a professional career since childhood, it’s nothing out of the ordinary. You’ve pounded thousands of balls to get here after all.

Making the weekend in Abu Dhabi gave Hill the confidence that he truly belongs and he’s making the most of it in this week’s comfy surroundings on the Majlis.

“I hit it a lot better today than I did yesterday. I think a quick range session last night was important and it showed today. I had the same amount of control on the ball as I did in the first round,” Hill said in an answer encompassing his scores of 70-74-69 heading into Sunday.

Even the way Hill dead-batted his post-round media huddle was striking, like a player who’s been around the block a bit rather than someone who still needs parental approval to leave the house.

He could easily have been sucked into a teenage gaff when a reporter jokingly asked if he’d like a “blow up” the notoriously difficult 9th ala Tyrrell Hatton after his repeated run-ins with the 18th at Yas Links.

After dropping four shots in three visits to the par-4 so far, including a three-putt bogey in the third round, the England international has every right to feel a bit miffed with the outward nine’s final, water-guarded hole. Bernd Wiesberger, Paul Casey and Richard Bland all found H2O later to highlight the difficulty. But Hill is clearly as level-headed as he is hard-working, giving a thoughtful answer with zero chance of causing offence.

“I think it’s the hardest hole on the course but I think it’s a fair hole and If you hit a good shot, you’re going to get rewarded as well, if you hit a bad shot… so I wouldn’t say I’d want to bomb it. Of course I’d like to take it off my scorecard but you can’t do that, so…”

“Pretty annoyed” by the three-putt, Hill regathered himself to birdie his next three holes – with an 8 iron into the par-5 10th, a 9-iron to a foot on the par-3 11th and then a chip-in three on 14. There was a sloppy bogey on 16 but Hill rallied again to finish with a flourish.

“I wanted a birdie down 18. I mean I hit a bad two-iron but it ended up in a perfect spot and I made a nice up and down so it was a good finish and a good way to get into tomorrow.”

Hill faded to a share of 58th in Abu Dhabi so will be hoping to comfortably better than in Dubai. Surely though, with all the big names around you, you must be feeling the blow torch of expectation?

“I feel like I normally do in a normal tournament to be honest,” the youngest winner of an OWGR event, the MENA Tour’s Al Ain Open in 2019, said with another of his matter-of-fact responses.

Sure, but how are you going to approach Sunday? “Play good golf. There’s not much to think about, it’s just another round of golf, isn’t it. Just go and play golf and see what happens.

“There’s just a few bigger names around me but I haven’t let that affect me. I’m just playing like it’s another amateur championship.”

“Like it’s the Abu Dhabi Amateur championship [which Hill won to qualify for last week’s Role Series event at Yas Links],” a reporter posed. “Yeah, just like it’s the club champs,” Hill said, breaking into a rare laugh.

There it was. The kid does have a pulse after all. And, after this week, a new legion of admirers as well.

Dubai amateur Josh Hill set to be a Majlis pied piper

Drawcards Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa will have their opening rounds in the books by the time Dubai amateur Josh Hill tees it up from the Majlis’ 10th tee at 12.40pm on Thursday. But even if they were lining up in the same half of the draw, you suspect the 17-year-old might have stolen a few fans away from the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic’s marquee three-ball – eight time DP World Tour winner Bernd Wiesberger included – anyway.

Hill is the toast of the region after brilliantly making three birdies in his final four holes to make the cut on the number at last week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. The shy teen went on to make six birdies and an eagle in an eye-catching third round 69 and while slipping to a share of 58th with a closing 75, is in a confident mood heading into his Dubai debut. And why not. In addition to making his first DP World Tour cut, Hill beat world No.2 and reigning Open champion Morikawa by two shots at Yas Links.

As such, you can bet the England international will take a few followers away from defending champion Paul Casey, world No.5 Viktor Hovland and freshly-minted Abu Dhabi champion Thomas Pieters who are off the 1st tee at 12.20pm in the flagship afternoon group.

“I’ve proven to myself that I can compete with all of them even though I made some really silly mistakes that I feel like I can improve on,” Hill said after Abu Dhabi.

“Having made the cut once, I want more of the same. This was huge for my confidence…in terms of showing that my game is good enough to compete at this level. It really was a case of moving up to another level.”

With ‘Seve’-Esque par from ‘dead’ lie, Josh Hill is the epitome of clutch and on his way back to the DP World Tour

Josh Hill needed a final-hole birdie to win the 2019 Abu Dhabi Amateur Championship by a stroke from his pal Arjun Gupta and subsequently become the youngest player to tee it up in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

It was a fittingly dramatic finish to the second edition of the WAGR-sanctioned event but not half as clutch as the wild par the 17-year-old conjured up on Thursday to capture the 54-hole title for a second time in three years and book his return to the $8 million DP World Tour event next month.

It was all tied up at -9 with Denmark’s Frederick Birkelund heading down the last at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club when Hill’s title hopes seemed lost courtesy of a tugged drive left that his father Russell described as “…so wide and dead”.

And then the Trump International Golf Club, Dubai member produced this miraculous recovery shot from the desert. Check. It. Out. (we suggest going to full-screen mode and urge you to wait for the ball to emerge, seemingly from thin air) :

Anyone who has ever played golf in the UAE knows how difficult shots are from wasteland, much less from the particularly gnarly lie that confronted Hill. And don’t forget all that wetness beyond that demanded absolute pin-point accuracy. Russell Hill provided a proud father commentary on his Instagram feed.

“Josh hit one of the most incredible golf shots I have ever seen today, SEVE Would have been proud of it himself,” Hill Snr wrote.

“Was tied for the lead going up the last hole, from the tee he left himself so wide and dead, he was in the desert behind a grass lump had about 25 yards to clear, of desert, cart path and rough and he had to land it in the fringe on a knuckle. If it landed left side it would have gone 15 yards away from the hole, to far right it would have kicked into the water and if to long it could have been wet… he landed it in a foot window and it rolled past the hole to eight foot, absolutely friggin stunning! It was so clutch it won him the title!”

Indeed, while Birkelund bogeyed, Hill two-putted for par to sign for a closing 72 to go with earlier rounds of 66-69 and a championship-winning 207 aggregate. His -9 total edged the Dane by a stroke with India’s Yash Majmudar third on 210 while Dubai-based Welsh international Toby Bishop and Victor Svendsen (DEN) finished T-4 a shot further back.

The victory sets up a third DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) start for Hill who will rub shoulders with the likes of Collin Morikawa and Rory McIlroy at the 17th Abu Dhabi Championship, a Rolex Series event to be hosted by Yas Links Abu Dhabi for the first time from Jan.20-23.

Hill has coincidently finished T-117 in both his previous DP World Tour starts, carding rounds of 74-76 around Abu Dhabi Golf Club’s National layout in 2020, a week before a pair of 77s also saw him miss the cut at the Dubai Desert Classic. Hill became the youngest winner of an Official World Golf Ranking event that season when he captured the MENA Tour’s Al Ain Open and has since gone on to gain selection to the senior England amateur team for the coveted Home Internationals.
