“When the PGA of America partnered with KPMG and the LPGA Tour in 2015, we promised to elevate this event by increasing the purse, conducting it at venues with a history of hosting men’s major championships such as Congressional Country Club, and delivering broadcast network coverage,” Jim Richerson, president of the PGA of America, said in a statement. “As part of our shared commitment to support and showcase women’s golf, we have delivered on those promises.”

This isn’t the first major to announce a huge purse increase on the LPGA Tour in 2022. In January, the USGA announced an increase from $5.5 million to $10 million for the US Women’s Open. The Chevron Championship, the first major of the year, also had a sizable increase, growing from $3 million to $5 million. The Amundi Evian Championship, which will be played in July, increased its purse from $4.5 million to $6.5 million.

These increases, along with others on the schedule, have made 2022 a record-breaking year for the LPGA: In 2022, the players on the LPGA Tour are playing for $97.1 million.

The post 2022 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship announces doubling purse to $9 million appeared first on Golf Digest Middle East.

The 2022 PGA Championship, originally scheduled to be held at Trump Bedminster in New Jersey before being pulled from the venue by the PGA of America four days after the Jan. 6 insurrection on the United States Capitol, will instead be held at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. The PGA of America made the announcement on Monday afternoon without further comment.

The move to Southern Hills marks the fifth time the club will play host to the tournament, the most recent being in 2007 when Tiger Woods won by two strokes over Woody Austin.

The decision also comes less than three weeks after supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol during a joint session of Congress to complete President Joe Biden’s election victory. Five people were killed, including Capitol Police officer Brian D. Sicknick. Afterward, there were calls for the PGA of America to move its flagship event from the course that Trump owns.

Less than a week after the attack, the PGA made it official.

“The PGA of America Board of Directors voted tonight to exercise the right to terminate the agreement to play the 2022 PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster,” PGA of America President Jim Richerson said on Jan. 10. “It has become clear that conducting the PGA Championship at Trump Bedminister would be detrimental to the PGA of America brand and would put at risk the PGA’s ability to deliver on many programs and sustain the longevity of our mission.”

In announcing the expected move to Southern Hills, the PGA returns to a familiar home. Seven times the Perry Maxwell-designed course has hosted a major championship, including three U.S. Opens (1958, 1977 and 2001), the last of which was won by Retief Goosen, who beat Mark Brooks in a playoff. It also held the PGA Championship in 1970, 1982 and 1994 and is slated to do so in 2030 as well.
