LIV Golf’s Hudson Swafford will undergo surgery on his injured hip and will require four-to-six months of rehab, causing him to miss the 2023 LIV Golf League season.

In a post on his Instagram story account, Swafford wrote: “I have been struggling with a hip injury which has caused a decline in my on-course performance. After consulting with a specialist, I was unfortunately advised my best option for an optimal recovery was to undergo surgery which will require 4-6 months of rehab. I remain a LIV Golf player and supporter and will be attending events as soon as my recovery allows me to in a non-playing capacity while I undertake my rehab. I am excited for the year ahead to get healthy again and back to playing the way I know I can and look forward to being back on the course soon.”

The LIV Golf League opens the season this week at LIV Golf Mayakoba in Mexico, with the 14-tournament schedule extending into early November. Due to the injury, Swafford will not be among the 48 active players representing the 12 four-man teams.

Swafford opened his 2023 playing season earlier this month at the PIF Saudi International, where he missed the cut. He then withdrew from the International Series Oman the following week.

Swafford played all eight events of the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series in 2022. He was drafted by Torque to begin the season, then moved to the Niblicks roster for the second event and remained there the rest of the way, eventually playing for the injured Bubba Watson when the two-time Masters champ joined LIV Golf as the Niblicks’ non-playing captain in the middle of the year.

Watson has renamed the team as RangeGoats GC, and will make his LIV Golf playing debut this week at Mayakoba. The RangeGoats roster is expected to be unveiled Monday.

The 35-year-old Swafford has four professional wins since turning pro in 2011, his latest one coming just 13 months ago in California.

Talor Gooch is one of three PGA Tour players whose appeal was rejected. Kevin C. Cox

By Joel Beall
A judge in US District Court has denied a motion to three LIV Golf members seeking to participate in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, giving the PGA Tour the first victory in the legal battle between the tour and the new circuit.

As part of the lawsuit filed by Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau and nine others against the PGA Tour last week, three players — Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones — attempted to get a temporary restraining order to play in this week’s FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis. Gooch, Swafford and Jones had argued that the tour had inflicted “irreparable harm” by keeping the players, who had been suspended by the tour for their participation in LIV Golf events, out of the tour’s post-season.

However, in a San Jose courtroom, Judge Beth Freeman sided with the tour.

“LIV contracts are based upon players calculation of what they were leaving behind,” Freeman said, adding they had not established a likelihood of success by their merits in the overall antitrust case.

In a two-hour hearing, lawyers for both LIV Golf and the PGA Tour at times seem to be making cases for the other side. A LIV Golf legal representative called the FedEx Cup the “Super Bowl of golf,” while PGA Tour representation claimed the LIV Golf event at Trump Bedminster had more “elite” players than the field at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. And Judge Freeman appeared to be poking holes in both sides, taking exception with PGA Tour Comissioner Jay Monahan’s ability to have absolute say in suspending players while questioning if, someday, the tour would be the party filing antitrust action against LIV Golf.

In its response to the original TRO motion, the tour had argued that the LIV players were “fabricating an emergency” and questioned the timing of the filing. Judge Freeman did not agree, feeling the filing was timely. But Freeman also said the LIV players are making double than what they made on tour, thus hurting the case that the tour suspensions were truly causing harm.

Following the defeat LIV Golf issued the following statement: “We’re disappointed that Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones won’t be allowed to play

golf. No one gains by banning golfers from playing.”

Monahan sent a memo stating: “With today’s news, our players, fans and partners can now focus on what really matters over the next three weeks: the best players in the world competing in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, capping off an incredibly compelling season with the crowning of the FedExCup champion at the Tour Championship.”

After the ruling Judge Freeman set the timeline for the remainder of the Mickelson vs. PGA Tour lawsuit. The trial, in which LIV Golf asserts antitrust actions by the PGA Tour, is set to begin in September 2023.

Talor Gooch in action at LIV Golf Bedminster

By Matt Smith
As the Wyndham Championship draws to a close, the traditional top 125 set to play in the final three FEDEx Cup events of the PGA Tour season are set in stone.

However, like much else in a golfing year unlike any other, that is not quite the case this time around.

This has nothing to do with thunderstorms delaying the final standings at Greensboro, North Carolina.

Rather, this concerns LIV Golf, as most things do these days.

With the FedEx St Jude Championship beginning on Thursday at TPC Southwind, Memphis, Tennessee, there is one small matter still to be ironed out ahead of tee off ‚ and it will be settled by the courts.

A hearing is set for Tuesday in California for Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones, who are all seeking a temporary restraining order to play in Memphis.

Last Wednesday, a 105-page complaint was filed by 11 LIV Golf players essentially challenging their respective suspensions by the PGA Tour for competing in the series. Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau are among those behind the lawsuit. Gooch, Swafford and Jones are part of that lawsuit but are the three who are attempting to earn the right to play in the playoffs for as long as they are eligible. All three would have qualified for the postseason had they not been suspended.

Just last week the PGA Tour created a FedEx Cup points list based on “eligibility” which removed players suspended by the tour, including the aforementioned three. The top 125 players from the eligibility list are those who will qualify for the FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis.

By GolfDigestME.com

A hearing is set for August 9 in California for Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones, who are all seeking a temporary restraining order to play next week’s FedEx Cup Playoff event in Memphis, which begins two days later.

On Wednesday, a 105-page complaint was filed by 11 LIV Golf players essentially challenging their respective suspensions by the PGA Tour for competing in the series.

By Dave Shedloski
The rogues have spoken.

Well, that’s not exactly how they want to be looked upon, but players competing in this week’s Memorial Tournament who have committed to next week’s LIV Golf Invitational Series in London don’t want to be seen as anything other than professional golfers pursuing a new business opportunity.

The LIV Golf Invitational Series, the big-money rival to the PGA Tour, released its commitment list on Tuesday, and members Matt Jones and Hudson Swafford appeared on the list. So did amateur James Piot, who earned an invitation to Muirfield Village Golf Club as the US Amateur champion but is not exempt on the tour.

Jones and Swafford spoke to Golf Digest on Wednesday before playing in the tournament pro-am, and they cited myriad reasons why they are playing in the inaugural LIV Series event — and in the process jeopardising their standing on the PGA Tour.

The tour released a statement on Wednesday reiterating its position that players who decided to take Greg Norman, head of the LIV Series, up on his offer to play for $25 million in this first tournament at the Centurion Club.

“As communicated to our entire membership on May 10, PGA Tour members have not been authorised to participate in the Saudi Golf League’s London event, under PGA Tour Tournament Regulations. Members who violate the Tournament Regulations are subject to disciplinary action.”

Matt Jones. David Cannon

“I have no idea in regards to what the PGA Tour is going to do, whether it’s suspending, fining, whatever,” said Jones, 41, who has two tour titles, $17.3 million in tour earnings, and three children under the age of 10. The latter, he will tell you, is a big deal.

“I do care what happens,” he added. “I love the PGA Tour, but I like the opportunity that the LIV Tour affords me and my family, and, look, everyone has their own unique circumstances, and this fits with mine.”

Jones cited several “positives” that swayed him.

“I enjoy the concept of the team competition. The three-day tournament. The shotgun starts, so we’re all playing under the same conditions,” he said. “I play golf for a living. I have been out here for 15 years, and if I can play for more money, provide better for my family but at the same time maybe be home a little bit more, then why not?

“I was raised by two parents who were there for me in all my sporting activities, and I’ve missed a lot of events with my kids. If the schedule affords me a better opportunity to be there for my kids, and probably be a better father and husband, then that to me is a big deal.”

MORE: Analyzing the 42 players who have signed up for LIV Golf

Swafford, a father of two with $9.6 million in earnings, also liked the thought of being home a bit more often. He also was intrigued by the team competition that provides a twist to the proceedings.

“I’m excited about it. Schedule is very enticing to a guy who has two small kids,” said Swafford, 34, who won The American Express earlier this year for his third tour title. “I think the format, the team aspect, is going to be incredible. Look at Zurich [the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, which is a two-man team event]. Putting teams together turned an event that was in a tough part of the schedule into one that gets some incredible fields. I’m really looking forward to seeing how that works.”

Swafford wasn’t sure exactly how the teams would be drafted. Neither did he seem to care. “Just having something different sounds pretty interesting,” he said.

And his future with the tour? “We’ll have to see how that all works out,” he said. “But I think a lot of guys out here understand that we all have to do what’s best for each of us.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Rory McIlroy said that the tour should not “drop the hammer” on tour members who opt to compete next week. Patrick Cantlay, the defending champion at the Memorial, also seemed to have an open mind towards fellow players taking up the offer to play elsewhere. McIlroy is on the PGA Tour Policy Board and Cantlay joins the board in 2023.

“I think everyone’s situation is so unique and different,” said Cantlay, ranked sixth in the world. “The motivators that different guys have I think a lot of times guides their decisions. Obviously, you’ve seen by a lot of the guys that have chosen to go over there, they are in the later parts of their career in general. They don’t feel like they are on the upswing. They probably feel like they are on the downswing. So, they are trying to maximise what years they have left.”

Cantlay admitted that he is interested to see what exactly will happen next week. He probably is not alone.

“I’m as curious as you are to see how the tournaments will go and what the presentation will be like, if it will be similar to golf tournaments that we’re used to seeing on TV, or if it will be something totally different, and only time will tell,” he said. “It should be very interested to see — at least I’m interested to see what that product will be compared to what the product is right now that we are all used to.

“But it does seem to be an interesting time for golf, and I think it’s going to be interesting to see what happens.”

Andy Lyons

By Brian Wacker
Hudson Swafford was on “cruise control” Sunday at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship. After three birdies and an eagle through his first nine holes, and with a four-shot lead with six to go, he had every reason to feel that way.

Then a stubbed chip rolled back to his feet and he double-bogeyed the 13th.

Two holes later, a 9-iron from the middle of the fairway that he “quit on” and another bogey.

Just like that, the lead was gone. Swafford was suddenly tied with Mackenzie Hughes and on the verge of choking away his first title in three years and the second of his PGA Tour career.

Only it turned out that he wasn’t. It only looked that way.

“I still had great self-belief,” Swafford said. “I just kept going just knowing that if I just focused on my rhythm, that my game was going to be good.”

And on the 17th hole, it was better than that.

With the breeze whipping along the Caribbean shores and the outcome in the balance, the 33-year-old Swafford, playing this season on a major medical extension after foot surgery in July 2019, stuffed a 6-iron to 10 feet on the tricky 210-yard par 3 to set up a birdie to grab the lead for good.

“I was just envisioning my shot at 17 on PGA West when I stepped up on the 17th green,” Swafford said, citing his other PGA Tour victory in 2017. “That was an 8-iron versus a 6-iron here, but [my caddie] Kyle [Bradley] said, ‘You know, this is just a three-quarter 6-iron, you’ve been hitting your 6-iron great all day, all week, just hit one more. It’s a 190 [yards], just do it,’ and I hit a beauty, then a solid putt and it went right in.”

One hole later, he made another clutch one, successfully navigating the steep ridge between his ball and the hole on 18 and then knocking in a nervy eight-footer for par and a one-stroke victory over Tyler McCumber.

From major medical extension to exempt on tour through 2023, Swafford also locked up spots in the 2021 Masters, PGA Championship, Players and Sentry Tournament of Champions with the win. It had been a long-time coming.

“It’s tough,” Swafford said of the foot injury, which was preceded by a rib injury in 2018. “Being hurt out here is not fun.”

It was also a long road back.

Swafford missed four months after having a small bone in the bottom of his foot removed in summer 2019. The time off was a blessing of sorts in that it allowed him to spend time at home after his wife gave birth to the couple’s son in December 2018. But he was also eager to get back to playing to try to secure his card.

When Swafford did return to competition, his first start was at the French Open on the European Tour last October, followed by a half dozen starts on the PGA Tour. He felt like he was just starting to find his groove this past spring, then the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the season for three months.

It turned out that break helped, too.

“Came back, felt like every aspect of my game had gotten better,” Swafford said. “It just really wasn’t showing. I was getting in my own way and then some more doubt just kind of crept in and I kept thinking about the medical.”

With just seven starts to gain enough points and time running out on the medical extension, the game became a mental one as much if not more than a physical one. Swafford felt he kept getting in his own way, so he called sport psychologist Dr. Bhrett McCabe.

Andy Lyons
Hudson Swafford celebrates with his caddie Kyle Bradley after putting to win on the 18th green.

The two men have known each other for years and had worked together in the past. From where McCabe sat, there was nothing new. It was just a matter of reminding Swafford about all the little processes that had gotten him to where he was before injuries had derailed him.

That included bringing McCabe in over the weekend in the Dominican Republic.

“He got me back on the straight and narrow, being like a kid and having fun again,” Swafford said. “He’s like, If you keep thinking about a medical, you’re not going to keep your card anyway, so you might as well go out and have fun. You know your game’s good, you know your stuff’s good, it’s going to show up. Just commit to the process and have fun and see what happens.”

Then came the closing stretch on Sunday: A sloppy par on the par-5 12th, the double on 13, the bogey on 15.

The lead had slipped away but Swafford wasn’t choking, at least not in his own head and with reason. Chipping isn’t the strong suit of his game but iron play and putting is. And as McCabe puts it, “sh*t happens.” How his client managed it is what would matter.

Of that, the finish left little doubt.

“I knew I had to just kind of dig deep and hit some solid golf shots with the wind,” Swafford said. “I hit a lot of them through 69 hole. I knew I could continue to do it.”

Andy Lyons

By Christopher Powers
If you turned the TV off when Hudson Swafford took a three-shot lead into the back nine on Sunday at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, then saw that he won by a stroke on the 18th hole, you’d probably think it was a pretty ho-hum finish. Well, the joke’s on you then. (And how dare you turn off a tour event before it’s over, even if this is NFL season. You call yourself a golf fan?!?)

Swafford stumbled down the stretch, but somehow impressively rallied, and there was excitement right until the very last putt fell.

Don’t worry, we’ll help fill you in on what you missed. Without further delay, here are our four takeaways from Sunday’s final round in the Dominican Republic.

Hudson Swafford’s got guts
Unlike his Georgia Bulldogs football team against Arkansas a day earlier, Hudson Swafford got out to a fast start at Corales Golf Club Sunday. He effectively stepped on everyone’s neck, shooting a front-nine 31 to give him a seemingly insurmountable three-shot lead heading into the back nine., one he even stretched to four shots with six holes to go.

But no lead on the PGA Tour is insurmountable, especially when you throw shots away like Swafford did down the stretch. A double-bogey on the 13th and a bogey at the 15th saw his four-shot lead vanish, and he found himself in a three-way tie at 17 under on the par-3 17th tee. Not only did he let the field back in it, he was in danger of losing outright.

RELATED: The clubs that Hudson Swafford used to win the Corales Puntacana Championship

Instead of wilting, Swafford dialled up his favourite shot—a flighted 6-iron that settled eight feet from the hole. He made the birdie putt, his only birdie of the week at the difficult 210-yard par 3, to take back the lead.

“It was kind of like the shot on 17 at PGA West when I won [the 2017 Desert Classic)],” Swafford said. “I actually hit two great shots on 16, hit a great putt. Was kind of bummed out [it didn’t fall for birdie], and I was just like, ‘Man, you’ve got to just step up and hit a good flighted 6-iron.’ I’ve done it a 100,000 times, I love hitting that golf shot. Man, it was a good one, and an even better putt.”

The hard work was just beginning for Swafford, though. First, was something he couldn’t control, sweating out Mackenzie Hughes, who was tied with Tyler McCumber at 17 under, making birdie in the group ahead of him on the 18th hole. Then, he needed to make a par of his own on 18 to close it out. After Hughes bogeyed, Swafford hit his approach well short, leaving him with a testy two-putt. His first was 10 feet short, setting up a much longer par putt to win than he would have wanted. He poured it right in the heart, just like his birdie putt at 17, to capture his second career tour win.

“Just hit it solid,” Swafford told himself before the winning putt. “I’ve been putting beautifully all week, hitting a lot of good putts. Obviously a couple on the back nine that just burned the edges, but I putted great on the front, putted well all week. Kyle [Bradley, Swafford’s caddie] just said ‘just hit one last solid putt,’ and you never know. The first one I thought I hit it pretty hard but it started bouncing like some of my chips on the back nine and it just hit and stopped. But it was a solid putt and went right in.”

This win could not have come at a better time for the 33-year-old Florida native. Swafford had still been playing on a major medical extension and needed all the FedEx Cup points he could accumulate to get off of it. Now, he’s set for the next two seasons on tour, and he’s earned an invitation to the 2021 Masters, which will be just his second appearance in the event. If last year’s fall swing is any indication, Swafford may be a lock for East Lake next August. This past season, eight of the 10 winners of the fall events made it to the Tour Championship.

“Man, it’s amazing,” he said afterwards. “Words can’t really describe it. Last two years have been tough. Not family-wise though. Me and my wife had our first son, so, life’s great. Golf is really hard. To do this, it’s fun, this is why I get up and grind.”

Have a Sunday, Tyler McCumber
As nice as a win would have been, a solo second could be just as valuable for a player like Tyler McCumber. The 29-year-old failed to finish inside the top 125 of the FedEx Cup standings a year ago, but still has status thanks to finishing in the top 50 on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2019. On Sunday in the Dominican Republic, while everyone was faltering down the stretch, McCumber shot up the leader board. A bogey-free 66, which included a long birdie putt at the 72nd hole, put him at 17 under, enough for the runner-up after Hughes’ bogey at the 18th. It jumped him 108 spots in the 2020-’21 FedEx Cup standings, where he now sits at fifth. It’s not a three-year exemption or a spot in the Masters, but McCumber, son of former PGA Tour pro Mark McCumber, relieved himself of some serious pressure for the rest of the year. It will only take one or two more good weeks to lock up a spot in the playoffs.

Andy Lyons

Much respect to Mackenzie Hughes
PGA Tour players don’t pay much attention to their odds, but these days it’s almost impossible to not even hear about them in passing. That’s especially true for tournament favourites, which Mackenzie Hughes was this week prior to Thursday’s opening round.

Well, he was actually a co-favourite along with Will Zalatoris and fellow Canadian Corey Conners, but you could argue he was most primed for a victory out of the three. Hughes was runner-up in this event a year ago and had collected four top-10s finishes since February. Much of his success was due to a hot putter, which isn’t always the most sustainable game plan.

Because of that, and because of the pressure of being the betting favourite (whether Hughes knew about it or not), he seemed primed for a letdown. Instead, he damn near won the thing and didn’t back down coming down the stretch. Hughes made a gutsy par save at the 17th and then gave his birdie putt at the 18th a great roll. A bogey dropped him to solo third, giving him his third third-place or better finish since March 1. If the putter stays hot, the 2016 RSM Classic winner could nab a second trophy soon.

Andy Lyons

Will Zalatoris is COMING
Zalatoris, the other betting favorite based off his U.S. Open performance, did seem to be having a come down from Winged Foot after three days. Then, the 24-year-old threw up a Sunday 65 to tie for eighth. Has the dude shown us enough of his talent over these last 14 days? Just to repeat: Zalatoris, a Korn Ferry Tour player, was favored to win a PGA Tour event this week. That is absolutely unheard of. He may not be a KFT player for long, though. The top 10 at Puntacana secured him a start in next week’s Sanderson Farms Championship. And he’s now earned 185 FedEx Cup points with his finish Sunday and at the U.S. Open, which puts him 103 points away from earning special temporary membership on the big tour. Can we bet on that happening? I’ll take whatever odds you got.

Hudson Swafford hadn’t won since the 2017 CareerBuilder Challenge, but he was attempting to do so at the 2020 Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship with eight of the same clubs he had en route to winning in his first PGA Tour victory.

Chief among them is the Ping S55 6-iron that he stuffed to seven feet on the 174-yard par-3 17th, and he then converted the putt with his TaylorMade Spider X Chalk mallet to regain the lead he had kicked away over the final nine. Swafford had held a commanding lead before double bogeying the 13th hole and bogeying the 15th, putting him in a temporary three-way tie with Tyler McCumber and Mackenzie Hughes.

“It was like the shot at 17 at PGA West when I won,” said Swafford of the tee shot at the 71st hole on Sunday. “I was like man, you gotta step up and I hit a good, flighted 6-iron. I’ve done it 100,000 times. I love hitting that golf shot and man, it was a good one and an even better putt.”

Although that proved to be the deciding birdie for win No. 2, Swafford hit another brilliant long iron into the 565-yard par-5 fourth that led to an eagle. Swafford’s Ping G400 driver also served him well as he averaged 329 yards for the week (ranked T-13) while hitting 78.6 percent of his fairways, ranking 18th in the field.

Still, Swafford, who had not three-putted all week and needed to convert a nervy six-footer for the win, which Swafford managed to make for a one-stroke victory over McCumber.

The clubs Hudson Swafford had in the bag at the 2020 Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship:

Ball: Titleist Pro V1
Driver: Ping G410 LST (Aldila NV 2KXV), 8.5 degrees
3-wood: Ping i25, 14 degrees
5-wood: Ping i25, 18 degrees
Irons (4-9): Ping S55; (PW): Titleist Vokey SM8
Wedges: Titleist Vokey SM7 (52, 55 degrees); TaylorMade Milled Grind Hi Toe (60 degrees)
