By GolfDigestME.com
When you think of end-of-the-year exhibitions like the Hero World Challenge, it’s hard not to look at the events as paid vacations for the participants. There were just 20 players competing at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas, all staying in swanky villas, playing in a no-cut event with Viktor Hovland defending his title and taking home a $1 million prize money payout — and no one else walking away with less than $100,000. Given the large sums of money that are starting to be thrown around in the men’s professional golf, the $3.5 million overall purse on offer is modest, but it’s still a handsome reward at the end of a long (and tumultuous) 2022 season.

The best part of the Hero, beyond the money it raises for Tiger Woods’ TGR Foundation, was that the field was swamped with top-ranked players. As disappointing as it was that Tiger had to withdraw with a foot injury, 16 of the top 20 in the world played, with runner-up Scottie Scheffler just missing out on a chance to take back the top spot in the World Ranking. There was money on the line, for sure, but pride as well.

Here’s the prize money payout for everybody in the field.
Win: Viktor Hovland, -16, $1,000,000
2: Scottie Scheffler, -14, $375,000
4: Xander Schauffele, -11, $150,000
5: Justin Thomas, -10, $135,000
6: Collin Morikawa, -9, $120,000
7: Tony Finau, -6, $115,000
T-8: Sungjae Im, -5, $112,500
T-10: Tom Kim, -4, $119,500
T-10: Sepp Straka, -4, $119,500
MORE: America’s worst golf holes

By Luke Kerr-Dineen
Tiger Woods withdrew from the tournament he’s charged with hosting this week, the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

It was a bitter blow for golf fans, ever-excited for a return of their icon, and obviously for Tiger himself.

The cause was plantar fasciitis in his right foot, an inflammatory injury resulting from the lingering damage to his right leg suffered in his February 2021 car crasg that flared up after preparing for this event.

“It was the ramping up process that did it,” Tiger said. “I did a lot of beach walks trying to simulate the sand out here and my foot just did not like that very much.”

With the only solution to “stay off my feet” Tiger’s hand was forced. He withdrew from this tournament on Monday, though said he plans to play in ‘The Match’ next week and the PNC Championship the week after that, because he can take a cart in both of those events.

Tiger was asked point-blank on Tuesday, during his pre tournament press conference at the Hero: Why doesn’t he take advantage of the PGA Tour’s disability clause, as John Daly and Casey Martin have done, and take a cart?

His response was categorical: “On the PGA Tour, no.”

Tiger played college golf at Stanford in the 1990s with Casey Martin, whose landmark 2001 victory over the tour in the US Supreme Court meant that players with a legitimate disability can take a cart in competition. But for Tiger himself, that’s a non-starter.

“My teammate was Casey Martin, and what he did with the ADA, I voted against it. I think [walking] is an integral part of the game at our level, and I will never take a golf cart until it’s sanctioned.”

Tiger says he’s fine taking a cart at The Match and the PNC because every player has the right to take one if they choose. That’s not the case in PGA Tour-sanctioned events, which includes the Hero.

“It’s sanctioned on the Champions Tour and the PNC is part of that [a PGA Tour Champions sanctioned event],” he says. “As far as a regular event, no, I would never do that.”

It’s a self-imposed line Tiger is drawing for himself, but nevertheless, that’s where he draws the line. He’s earned the right to take a cart if he wishes — many golf fans are probably rooting for him to take that option — but for Tiger, it’s simply a matter of principle.

By Joel Beall
Tiger Woods announced on Wednesday he will be playing in the Hero World Challenge in December.

The tournament, slated to begin on December 1, will mark Woods’ first return to competition since his possible goodbye to St Andrews at this year’s Open Championship. Woods, 46, played nine rounds in 2022, highlighted by making the weekend at both the Masters and PGA Championship.

The news means Woods could play up to three different times in a three-week stretch in December. Earlier this week it was confirmed that Woods will pair up with Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth in the latest iteration of the Match, which will be held on December 10, and Woods could again compete in the father/son PNC Championship starting on December 17.

Seventeen of the top 21 players in the world will attend Woods’ charity event in the Bahamas. That group includes defending Hero champion Viktor Hovland, World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Thomas and Spieth. Will Zalatoris, who has been sidelined with injury since the BMW Championship, is listed as a participant. Other notables include Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Max Homa and Presidents Cup standout Tom Kim. Zalatoris, Homa and Kim — along with Cameron Young and Sungjae Im — will be making their Hero debuts.

Woods also announced that Kevin Kisner and Tommy Fleetwood will be in the Hero field.

Though the Hero does not offer FedEx Cup points or official money it does award World Ranking points.

Breezy conditions in The Bahamas yielded some of the higher scores we’ve seen this week at the Hero Wold Challenge, but the wind couldn’t stop 36-hole leaders Jon Rahm and Henrik Stenson from building on their lead at Albany. Playing with one another, the pair carded matching three-under 69s, each hanging on down the stretch to stay tied at the top of the leader board at 13-under 203 heading into Sunday.

But tomorrow they will have company, as Tony Finau carded one of the rounds of the day, a five-under 67 that featured just one bogey, which came at the par-3 second. From there Finau caught fire by making six birdies, but his most important hole of the day was his 18th, where Finau nearly holed out a birdie chip from an impossible spot right of the green, then made the lengthy comeback putt for par to finish strong.

Rahm, who also bogeyed the par-3 second, went on a similar run to Finau’s making three birdies on his next nine holes before dropping his second shot of the day at the par-3 12th. He would recover with birdies as 14 and 15 to post a 69, his second straight round in the 60s. It could take something similar to win this thing on Sunday.

“If you’re asking for a score, I don’t know,” said Rahm. “It really depends on the pin positions and how the wind comes up tomorrow. The wind intensity is the No.1 factor. If we get very little wind, you’re going to have to shoot in the 60s for sure to have a chance.

“With good conditions, if it’s anything worse than 69, I’d be shocked.”

If it’s Stenson that gets it done with a round below 70, that would give him four rounds in the 60s for the week, which would make him the only player in the field to do that this week. If he continues to play like he has been (first in the field in driving accuracy, greens in regulation and birdies), he has to like his chances.

There plenty of intriguing names chasing though, starting with Gary Woodland and Rickie Fowler, who won this event last year with a scintillating final-round 61. He posted a third-round 67 to get to 10-under 206, as did Woodland, who has a one-shot edge on Fowler at 11-under 205.

Xander Schauffele and Dustin Johnson are tied for sixth at nine-under 207, and Patrick Reed, who shot a 77 on Friday, bounced back with a 66 on Saturday to get to eight-under 208.
