Not only do you get everything from funky bajillionaire castles to crazy starter homes, you also stumble across the occasional golf paradise. Take this Cedar Lake, Indiana, abode for example. From the outside, it looks more like a glorified garage than anything. There’s a sprawling driveway out front and a massive three-car garage taking up much the home’s first level. The second level provides the actual living quarters … or so we thought.

Even in our most golf-addled dreams, we did not see that coming. This is truly unhinged, with the open loft-style living area converted almost entirely into a practice putting green. But don’t worry, there’s a desk with a TV and a kitchen area for heating up your Pop-Tarts before another 36. When it comes time to turn in for the night, just throw down a sleeping bag on the turf. Boom. Problem solved.

The only deal breaker is the price. $619,900 for 1,600 square feet, an artificial putting surface and a roomy garage in Nowheresville, highlights just how out of hand the real estate market has become. We know it’s hard to resist, but you might want to wait until the bubble bursts before putting in an offer on this bad boy.

Very rarely does a chance like this come along. All you need is a passport, a love of golf and a boatload of cash.

Spofforth Golf Course and Manor Farm in North Yorkshire are up for sale for over $2.5 million (around £2 million), which doesn’t just feature a four-bedroom bungalow but also a 6,176-yard, par-72 course, six-bay driving range and clubhouse, all located on an “undulating and part-wooded property” on 130 northern England acres.

“While Spofforth Golf Course’s potential for commercialisation is obvious, this attractive property will undoubtedly also appeal to buyers seeking a rural, ring-fenced property for residential, amenity or other uses,” said Ben Allen of HMH Golf & Leisure. “HMH currently has 11 golf courses under offer at various locations around the country and, as always, expect strong interest in Spofforth Golf Course.”

The course will have its 30th birthday next year, so this is a great time to buy in right before the big ceremony. Originally a family farm, Spofforth Golf Club features a greenkeeping complex and car park with a four-bedroom abode that includes tremendous views, a garden and an additional private driveway. There’s a one-bedroom cottage on the property as well. It seemingly never ends.

“Spofforth Golf Course/Manor Farm offers an incredible opportunity to purchase land and property of a scale that is rarely seen in a location this close to Harrogate,” added John Haigh of Lister Haigh.

While the world’s workers and businesses brace for recession, the golf mega-mansion market continues to boom. In February, actor Mark Wahlberg sold his Beverly Hills home with a backyard pitch-and-putt for $55 million. A few months later we saw a Calgary compound with its own nine-hole track and clubhouse hit the market for $14 million and marvelled at a Scottish estate steps from two of the most famous links greens on earth. Recently we even got a peek at Patrick Mahomes’ new backyard golf haven. Now we have another entry to the golf real-estate portfolio with this $8-million Columbus-area estate featuring its own immaculately manicured par-3 hole and putting green.

If you didn’t know any better, you might mistake that for Augusta National’s iconic 16th hole and the similarities don’t end there. In addition to the six bedrooms, seven-and-a-half bathrooms and four fireplaces, the Delaware County home features a study modelled after Augusta National’s wood-paneled clubhouse.

The 12,000-square-foot spread offers plenty of perks beyond just ANGC worship, including 10-12 foot ceilings on every floor, an elevator, an outdoor infinity pool and a fully renovated party barn that sits on top of a 10-car garage. Needless to say, if you’re looking for a luxurious taste of the Masters in southern Ohio (and have the cash for it), you could do a lot worse than this gem.

The PGA Tour event in New Orleans is different for more than just the unique two-player team format the Zurich Classic uses. Nola might be pound-for-pound the best food stop on the PGA Tour schedule, and there’s never a shortage of things to do at any hour.

If that sounds good to you — and you have an architect’s eye (and budget) for a renovation — this property might be right something to take a look at. Metairie Country Club is right with New Orleans Country Club at the top of the pecking order of area private clubs, and its course is the undisputed leader. The Seth Raynor design was completed in 1925 and just went through a down-to-the-studs renovation that has it playing in ways Raynor would have immediately recognised.

Down-to-the-studs is a good way to describe this 5,084-square-foot 1950s-era mansion that overlooks Metairie’s 18th hole. The $2.7 million fixer-upper has a busted, 1980s-panelled vibe and a grim in-ground pool and pool house, but you wouldn’t be keeping any of that, anyway. The taxes are “only” $14,400 per year, and you can toast players finishing up from the exotic outdoor bar.

With the right improvements, it isn’t hard to imagine the property comparing favourably to some of the $3 million and $4 million new builds in the neighborhood. Of course, getting into Metairie is another matter. You’re on your own there.
