In recent years there have been several golf-related items that have brought big bucks at auction. But when the item once belonged to Tiger Woods, it takes on an added importance.

That proved to be the case again this month when Golden Age Golf Auctions offered a backup of Woods’ renowned Scotty Cameron putter, this one from the 2002 season (Cameron would habitually make Woods one to three backups per season, most of which were eventually given away). When bidding closed on Saturday night, the club fetched $393,000, which is believed to be the most expensive club ever sold.

A similar auction last fall for a Tiger backup putter from the 2001 season sold for $154,928.

Also sold on Saturday was Gary Player’s 1974 Masters trophy, which according to the listing on the Golden Age Auctions website went for $523,483.

According to the auction listing, Tiger’s 2002 putter “has spent the past 18-plus years in the Far East, the Middle East and Europe.” Two days before the auction opened for bidding, the valuable flat stick cleared customs and was sent to Golden Age Auctions’ warehouse.

Of course, the eventual price tag for this putter—which has “T.W.” stamped on the toe and “Scotty Cameron” stamped vertically near the heel along with a single dot sightline on the topline—is nowhere near what Woods’ “gamer” used in 14 of his 15 major championship wins would fetch. Although that putter almost certainly will never see anything outside of Woods’ bag or home, Golden Age Golf Auction’s co-founder Ryan Carey, a golf memorabilia collector himself, said in a 2019 interview with Golf Channel that it would go for $3 million to $5 million if ever available. Carey inserted a note into the auction listing for the 2002 backup that he believes now that his estimate was too low.

Which makes the current backup putter somewhat of a bargain.

The allure of Tiger Woods’ equipment was on display over the weekend, as a backup putter netted more than $150,000 at an auction on Sunday.

Golden Age Golf Auctions confirmed on Sunday morning the winning bid of $154,928 on this backup Scotty Cameron putter, which was produced for Tiger in 2001 in case his Scotty Cameron Newport 2 became damaged. It’s been reported that Scotty Cameron produced one or two extra putters for Tiger per year, and he would practice with them or keep them handy in case it was needed in competition.

Tiger has used his original Scotty Cameron Newport 2 to win 14 of his 15 major titles.

The world record price paid for a putter was obliterated last night when this Tiger Woods backup putter brought over $154,000 at auction pic.twitter.com/u6sSRhM7uU

It’s believed that this six-figure price is the highest for similar pieces of equipment. It’s not known how this piece was acquired and put up for auction. The rarity of a piece of Tiger’s equipment collection—was evident in this big-time price tag.
