LOOK: LIV Golf’s riches propel Phil Mickelson to top of Forbes list — overtakes Lionel Messi as highest-paid athlete

In his three starts on the LIV Golf Invitational Series, Phil Mickelson has struggled to conjure up the game that earned him his spot in the World Golf Hall of Fame.

He’s a collective 26-over par following his final round at Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey on Sunday.

Yet the 52-year-old is still a big winner according to a report from Forbes.

The magazine has published its latest list of the highest-paid golfers in the world. Perhaps not surprisingly seven of the top 10 were players who moved to the money-spinning LIV Golf series, with signing-on fees and record-breaking prize money.

Forbes estimated that in total LIV Golf has increased the earnings of the 10 highest-paid golfers by an estimated $370 million since May, bringing their combined haul to a record $650 million.

Mickelson reportedly signed a LIV Golf contract estimated at more than $200 million. Forbes calculates that half of that Mickelson “likely got upfront”, thus it has put his 2022 on-course earnings at $102 million.

Add $36 million in off-course revenue and Lefty’s total comes to $138 million, which Forbes says puts him past footballer Lionel Messi as the world’s highest paid athlete in 2022.

Tiger Woods’ net worth is $800 million, $50 million more than a year ago, according to Forbes

The accuracy of net worth lists ought to be viewed, at a minimum, with a modicum of skepticism, but they are interesting nonetheless, notably when Diddy is shown to be worth more than Tiger and a 21-year-old woman is worth more than either of them.

The list is Forbes’ annual ranking of America’s wealthiest celebrities.

Tiger Woods ranked in a tie with author James Patterson for ninth at $800 million, which positions himself in the years ahead to have a go at adding “billionaire” to descriptions of him.

Lest he get too cocky, Michael Jordan is worth more than twice as much, at $1.7 billion, fourth on the list.

Just ahead of Tiger is Diddy at $825 million, while Kylie Jenner, the wunderkind who is the sole owner of Kylie Cosmetics, is No. 5 at $900 million.

George Lucas is a runaway No. 1 at $5.4 billion.

Last year, Woods was ranked eighth at $750 million. Woods’ improbable comeback from injuries, capped by a victory in the Tour Championship, already has paid dividends to his bottom line in 2018 and is likely to continue doing so into the future. Last month, it was announced that Woods has signed a multi-year deal with Discovery Inc. to provide content on its streaming video platform, GOLFTV.

He also has endorsement contracts with Nike, TaylorMade, Bridgestone, Hero MotorCorp, Monster Energy and Kowa, the latter a Japanese pharmaceutical company.

Tiger Woods leads list of five golfers on Forbes’ 100 highest-paid athletes ranking

Tiger Woods hasn’t finished on top of a scoreboard since 2013. But Woods is still coming in first when it comes to the bank account.

Forbes released its annual World’s 100 Highest Paid Athletes ranking this week, with the 42-year-old ranking 16th on the list at $43.3 million. While that’s a far cry from his heyday—for over a decade, Woods was No.1 overall, hauling in over $100 million on multiple occasions—he’s still the top golfer on the list. $42 million come from endorsements, including sponsorship deals with Upper Deck, TaylorMade, Monster Energy, Bridgestone, Hero Motocorp, Nike, and Rolex.

According to Forbes, only Woods, boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. (who earned the crown with $285 million, $275 million from his fight with Conor McGregor) and soccer star Ronaldo have topped the list in the last 18 years.

Aside from Tiger, four other golfers made the ranking: Phil Mickelson at No.22 ($41.3 million), No.23 Jordan Spieth ($41.2 million), No.26 Rory McIlroy ($37.7 million) and No.66 Justin Thomas ($26 million). The reigning Player of the Year is unique in that the majority of his cash came from earnings ($21 million) compared to endorsement ($5 million).

The list only includes active athletes. After Mayweather, the top-earning American was LeBron James (No.6 overall) at $85.5 million, with Steph Curry (No.8) not far behind at $76.9 million.
