Warren Little/R&A

By Alex Myers
If golf fans heard anything more often than that darn One Republic song during TV coverage of last week’s PGA Championship, it was that St. Louis is a GREAT SPORTS TOWN. And according to Tiger Woods’ caddie, Joe LaCava, this reputation was displayed not only by the huge crowds that flocked to Bellerive for the tournament, but by the classy manner fans handled themselves. Sadly, though, that’s not always the case.

Fresh off looping for Tiger during that memorable final-round charge, LaCava was a guest Wednesday on ESPN’s Golic and Wingo, and he shared a funny story from Firestone the previous week. Apparently, some knucklehead was heckling Woods during the final round of the WGC-Bridgestone before LaCava stepped in. Asking politely didn’t get the guy to stop, so he went to a different strategy.

“He goes, ‘Well, if you give me the $25 I paid for a ticket today, I’ll leave.’ So I go, here’s $25,” LaCava said.

But after whipping out his wallet and handing the guy his money, LaCava said he still refused to leave. The caddie, upset now that he wouldn’t go and that he had taken his money, eventually had the heckler ejected. What did Woods, who was waiting for a yardage, think of the situation?

“He didn’t have a problem,” Lacava said. “And actually, I got a standing ovation for kicking the guy out of there.”

Well done, Joe. Putting your money where your mouth is to help your boss and friend. Anyway, listen to the entire story here:

LaCava also reveals in that clip that he needles Tiger from time to time to lighten the mood and help him play better.

“Sometimes I joke so that Tiger can hear going down certain holes,” LaCava said. “I’ll joke with the other caddies and say, ‘How are the fairways? Are they in good shape today?”

If LaCava pulled that one out during Tiger’s wild front nine on Sunday, he’s worth every penny Woods pays him and more.

Tiger Woods’ back nine struggles at Carnoustie cost him the claret jug, and—for a short window of time—seemed to cost him a chance at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. However, a computing error was discovered, which bumped the 14-time major winner to No. 50 in the world rankings, thus earning an invite to Firestone.

On Thursday, Woods and his team officially committed to the tournament’s final stop in Northeast Ohio, which begins next week.

He’s COMMITTED. ?

See you back in Akron, @TigerWoods! pic.twitter.com/RupXRMtunN

The Firestone confines have been friendly to Woods throughout his career. The 42-year-old has eight wins at the tournament, along with a runner-up finish and a total of 12 top-10 finishes in 15 starts. Alas, next week marks Tiger’s last chance to add to the trophy case from the Akron event, as the championship is moving to Memphis in 2019.

Aside from a potential ninth victory at the Invitational, Woods will be looking to improve his Ryder Cup standing at Firestone’s farewell. The 14-time major winner’s T-6 at Carnoustie vaulted him to 20th in the latest points revision, but with eight automatic bids awarded after the PGA Championship, Woods needs a win in Ohio and a strong performance at Bellerive to earn one of those selections.

The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational begins on August 2. Hideki Matsuyama is the defending champion.

Many golf courses have plaques on their property, commemorating holes-in-one, donations, or the passing of a regular at the club. (And, in some cases, events that never happened.) Saddleback G.C. in Firestone, Colo. took this ritual to another level.

The course, about 30 miles outside of Denver, installed a marker to pay tribute to quite the rarity: a man winning a marital dispute.

According to 9 News, Josh Clay, the facilities manages at Saddleback, said a wife recently joined her husband for his usual game during “Old Turd Tuesday.”

Despite his objections, she decided to hop in the driver’s seat and tried to maneuver past some other golf carts. One issue, according to Clay: “When she went to hit the brake, she accidentally hit the gas and confirmed her husband’s suspicions that she was not a very good driver.”

The woman proceeded to put the golf cart into a pond. “Our marshal at the time came over the radio and all you hear is, ‘We have a woman in the lake,’” Clay told 9 News. “‘Wait, no, we have a golf cart in the lake!’”

Luckily, no one was hurt. And given the nature of the accident, the club decided to have some fun.

“Wouldn’t it be nice to commemorate that time that that husband told his wife something and he was actually right about it?” Clay said. Thus, the marker was born.

So take solace, men. Somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, there’s a sign, nodding to your astute observations that fall on deaf ears.
