Tour pro loses share of lead on DP World Tour with most bizarre birdie putt you’ll ever see

We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again and we’ll never stop saying it: winning isn’t easy in pro golf.

For this week’s example, we point to the Cazoo French Open on the DP World Tour. Ewen Ferguson held a share of the lead with Jordan Smith entering the final round at Le Golf National, site of the 2018 Ryder Cup outside Paris. The Scot won twice on tour in 2022, but came into this week’s event ranked 51st in the Race to Dubai, with a top-50 finish on the points list getting you into the field at the DP World Tour Championship in November. A victory in France would obviously make certain he was playing in the lurcrative season-ender, but a solid showing would make things a lot less tense on the 27-year-old with five regular-season events remaining this autumn.

But Ferguson’s chances at winning took a massive hit on the opening hole … and in the most bizarre fashion.

Ouch. Ferguson took a drop and eventually posted a double-bogey 6. It didn’t get much better on the par-3 second hole when he hit his tee shot into the water and made another double-bogey. A bogey on the par-4 fourth saw him tumble further down the leaderboard.

Ferguson continued to grind, making a birdie on the ninth hole to hit the back nine still just three shots back of Smith. But it’s safe to say this wasn’t the way we’re guessing Ferguson thought the day would play out.

By day’s end, Ferguson posted a four-over 76 that left him tied for 10th, six shots back of eventual winner Ryo Hisatsune, who outpaced Smith with a closing 66 to grab his first career DP World Tour title. The good news? Ferguson did sneak inside the top 50 on the Race to Dubai points list (up to 46th). The bad news? The autumn isn’t going to be any less tense.

Scottish Open golf fans keep confusing this DP World Tour winner for Rickie Fowler

Rickie Fowler is always one of the most popular golfers wherever he plays, but he’s in particularly high demand at this week’s Genesis Scottish Open. Not only is the PGA Tour star a former winner of this event, but he’s in the midst of a resurgence and coming off his first win in more than four years at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. So not surprisingly, many of the fans in attendance at The Renaissance Club have been screaming his name—they just haven’t all been screaming his name at the right player.

Here’s where Ewen Ferguson enters the story. The 27-year-old is a native of Scotland and a two-time DP World Tour winner. So you would think he would be pretty recognizable in his own right in these parts. But apparently, he keeps getting confused for the 34-year-old American. Even after playing his way into contention with an opening 66 on Thursday.

“It’s so funny the things I was hearing today walking around the course, ‘Rickie! Rickie!’” Ferguson told reporters following Thursday’s round. “I’m like, I need to break that guy’s heart; I’m not him.”

We can kinda see the resemblance. Although, if you look at the photo above, a lot of that probably has to do with the fact Ferguson is also sponsored by Cobra and Puma. And he likes to wear sunglasses on the course. Take those away, and, well, see for yourself:

Ewen looks more like Adam Scott there. Or Jon Snow. Regardless, he’s a good-looking dude, he’s just not as similar-looking to Rickie Fowler as people think. And yet, the confusion continues.

“Even when I pulled up on the last here to the recording, they were shouting Rickie. I’m like, not Rickie, mate,” Ferguson added. “I’m just a wee guy from Glasgow. I don’t think it’s that bad. He’s some golfer, isn’t he.”

The good news for Ferguson? (Well, other than the fact that there are much, much worse people to be mistaken for.) For at least one day, he bested Rickie, who shot 67. And three more rounds like Thursday’s, and Ewen will have people shouting his actual name at him.

One of us: DP World Tour pro putts from bunker at Porsche European Open

At some point, we’ve all thought about it, ‘it’ being putting out of a bunker. It’s a last-resort type shot, the one you attempt when you’ve given up on trying to get it out of the trap on the first try. Maybe just whack it with this flat thing and hope it gets out, you tell yourself.

Of course, there are only rare occasions where attempting it is even in the cards. If the bunker has a significant lip (most do) it’s a complete no-go. But every now and then you’re in greenside trap that has no real lip and some nicely shaved fringe between you and the green and it hits you — this is puttable.

Apparently, that’s a thought that even crossed tour pros’ minds, as Scotland’s Ewen Ferguson showed us on Thursday at the Porsche European Open. At the par-3 eighth, Ferguson was presented with the exact situation outlined in the paragraph above this one, and he had no issue swallowing his pride and rolling the rock out of the sand and on to the green, setting up a look at par:

Unfortunately, Ferguson was unable to save par, but the ultimate goal was accomplished — take disaster out of play. Yes, even the world’s best see water behind the green and think: “Man, if I catch too much ball I could be in big trouble here.” Don’t believe us? DP World Tour: Oliver Wilson holds off Ewen Ferguson for Made in Himmerland glory

Oliver Wilson holed two enormous birdie putts on the back nine on Sunday to win the 2022 Made in Himmerland by one shot and claim his second DP World Tour title almost eight years after winning his first.

Ewen Ferguson had looked on course to secure his third victory of the season after shooting a closing 66 to set the clubhouse target at 20-under par.

But Wilson, playing in the final group, finished with a flourish in Farso, holing from 66 feet at the 13th, 14 feet on the 16th and 64 feet at the 17th to leapfrog the Scot and take a one-shot lead to the 18th tee.

He safely parred the last to sign for a 67, finish the tournament on 21-under and return to the winner’s circle for the first time at this level since the 2014 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Wilson came into the week searching for his first top-10 finish on the DP World Tour since the 2019 edition of this event, when he came joint-fourth.

An emotional Wilson expressed pride in himself after getting the job done.

Fighting back tears in his post-round interview, he said: “I was so confident. I knew I could get the job done. Everything I’ve done to this point to rebuild my game, I knew I could do it.

“And I was so in control, and I said I wasn’t going to cry. I was so calm there. I almost enjoyed the last hole.

“It’s pretty special. I’m so proud of myself. I feel like there’s a lot ahead of me and I’m so pleased to get win number two.

“I love this place. I’ve done well here before.

“My game has been trending in the right direction. There’s been a lot of good stuff this year, I just haven’t been able to put it all together.

“I guess 18 years’ experience gets you to hang in there. And to get over the line, it feels good. It feels so good.”

Ferguson finished alone in second on 20 under, two shots ahead of Norway’s Kristian Krogh Johannessen in solo third.

Maja Stark scorches course record to win LET/LPGA ISPS Handa World Invitational as Ferguson claims DP World Tour title

Sweden’s Maja Stark finished top of the pile in the Ladies European Tour/LPGA ISPS Handa World Invitational at Galgorm Castle Golf Club, while Ewen Ferguson shot a final-round 69 to complete a wire-to-wire victory in the DP World Tour event.

There was a four-way tie for the lead among the ladies and a bunched-up chasing pack early in the final round but it was Stark who took the tournament by the scruff of the neck with six birdies on the front nine. She turned with a three-shot lead and added four more birdies for a course-record 63, 20-under total and five-stroke triumph.

Scotsman Ferguson started the week by firing a course-record 61 and although things got tight at the business end on Sunday, he held in his nerve to win the event — tri-sanctioned by the DP World Tour, Ladies European Tour and LPGA Tour ∏ with a 12-under total and three-shot margin.

The separate tournaments on the same two courses — Galgorm and Massareene — held equal prize funds of $1.5million each with $250,000 for each winner.

Ferguson, the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters winner earlier this year, said: “It feels unbelievable. I just can’t believe how calm I was out there. It couldn’t have worked out any better playing with Connor. I felt although I played with him the first two days and he was playing so, so good, and I felt he was my main rival for the day, so managing to play with him and hold each other off and keep up with each other was so good. Just can’t believe I’m a winner again.”

Stark added: “I don’t think it’s landed yet. I’m just feeling so nervous. All day, I was just kind of reminding myself to be calm and take it one shot at a time. But it’s been easier said than done.”

Doherty and Ferguson close in on victory at DP World/LET ISPS Handa World Invitational

Ewen Ferguson will take a three-stroke lead into the final round of the ISPS Handa World Invitational as he seeks a second DP World Tour title.

The Scotsman, who secured his maiden success at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in March, started the day one stroke ahead of Spain’s Borja Virto at Galgorm Castle Golf Club but quickly moved clear after birdies on the second and fourth holes.

His third birdie of the day came on the 10th and he recovered from back-to-back bogeys on the 14th and 15th with his fourth gain of the day on the 18th as he moved to 11-under par after signing for a two under 68.

The 26-year-old sits three strokes ahead of American John Catlin, who won the Irish Open at this venue in 2020.

Last year’s Challenge Tour Number One Marcus Helligkilde, of Denmark, carded the lowest round of the day, a six-under 64, which included two eagles and four birdies, to move into a share of third place on seven-under. Joining him in third place are England’s Jack Senior, Scotsman Connor Syme and Virto.

A further cut has been made after the third round of the the innovative event, which sees a DP World Tour and a co-sanctioned LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour tournament taking place on the same golf course. The top 35 players and ties from each tournament after 54-holes will contest the final day, with 38 men and 39 women set to tee it up in alternating groups.

In the women’s competition, Amanda Doherty will go in search of her first LPGA Tour title as she takes a one-stroke lead into the final day. The American, who has led since the first round, is one shot clear from 2018 Women’s Open champion Georgia Hall and Peiyun Chien from Chinese Taipei.

“I feel like overall it was a good day. I got off to a little bit of a rough start and I hit a few crazy shots today, so I managed to kind of come back from those and try and stay patient to have a decent round,” said Doherty.

“Going into the second round and going into today I was in pretty much the same spot, so I feel like I’ve had a little bit of experience with that this week. Obviously, the final round is a little bit different, but I’m excited.

“I was glad to get a birdie on 18. I had a few close calls, and nothing was going in, so it was nice to get that one. I was in contention quite a few times last year on the Epson Tour. I didn’t pull any of them off, but I feel like I had good final rounds. That’s all you can ask for. You can’t control what anybody else does. As long as I can have a solid final round, I’ll be happy with that.”

Ferguson added: “For 36 holes I played really, really good. Today was such a grind. I knew that I didn’t feel great on the range and it was going to be a grind, so battled away and chipped and putted my way to shooting a really good 68 around a tough golf course and extended my lead. Can’t ask for much more, to be honest.

“It’s just way too early to start feeling pressure. I’ll feel pressure tomorrow on the back nine, but like I just was just — you’re just jockeying for position at this moment it seems like, so just kind of going with it. Try to enjoy it, even though it is — it was tough because I wasn’t at all on my game, but grinded it out really well.”

Ferguson and Doherty remain ahead in Northern Ireland at DP World Tour/LET ISPS Handa World Invitational

Ewen Ferguson will go into the weekend at the ISPS HANDA World Invitational presented by AVIV Clinics with a one-stroke lead in the men’s event after carding a level par 70 at Massereene Golf Club.

The 26-year-old, who started the second round of the innovative event four strokes clear after setting a new course record at Galgorm Castle Golf Club yesterday with a nine under par 61, made a slower start to the day as he parred the first seven holes.

Starting from the 10th hole, his first birdie of the day came on the 17th hole, his eighth, and he played the front nine in one over with three bogeys and two birdies to sign for a level par round.

The Scotsman is one stroke clear of Virto, of Spain, who followed his five-under 65 at Massereene with a three-under par 67 at Galgorm to reach eight-under. The 31-year-old is in a rich vein of form with four finishes of tied eighth or better in his last seven starts on the Challenge Tour, on which he won twice in 2015.

Filippo Celli, who won the Silver Medal at The 150th Open at St Andrews last month after finishing as low amateur, shares third on seven-under par with Sweden’s Felix Palson, while Scotsman Connor Syme is fifth on six-under.

The ISPS Handa Invitational is tri-sanctioned between the DP World Tour, Ladies European Tour and LPGA, with the men’s and women’s tournaments being played simultaneously.

The final two rounds will be played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club, with the top 60 and ties from the men’s and women’s competition playing on Saturday. There will be a further cut to the leading 30 players and ties from both tournaments for the final round on Sunday. Tee times will alternate between male and female groups on both days.

In the women’s event, American Amanda Doherty remains one stroke ahead with her second consecutive round of 67. She is one stroke ahead of compatriot Lauren Coughlin and five-time Ladies European Tour winner and Solheim Cup player Emily Kristine Pedersen.

“Still playing nicely, but, a few more bad breaks today and missed a couple of the putts that I’ve kind of been making yesterday to keep my round going,” said Ferguson. “Good putts, but just kind of lipping out, and yesterday they were kind of lipping in. You walk onto the next tee when they lip in, you feel amazing. When you walk on the next tee and they lip out you feel a bit flatter. It was still a good day overall.”

Doherty added: “The putts were going in today. I was hitting the ball well to get it close enough for them to go in, but they were just falling in.

“That was definitely the best part of my game on the front nine. I then tried to hang on on the back nine, but I was putting really well today.

“Leading is not a position I have really been in before on the LPGA, so it’s always fun. It’s nice to know that I have some good, low rounds in me for sure. The last two years on the Epson Tour was a really good learning experience for me, and I think to have put myself in contention so many times last year makes me feel a little bit more comfortable with the position that I’m in now.”

Scotland’s Ewen Ferguson set up home from home across the Irish Sea as he carded a course-record nine-under 61 at Galgorm Castle Golf Club to storm into the lead after the first round of the ISPS Handa World Invitational presented by AVIV Clinics.

The Qatar Masters champion is in fine form once again after also setting a course record at the Hero Open at Fairmont St Andrews a fortnight ago, carded five birdies and two eagles as he moved four strokes clear in Northern Ireland.

The 26-year-old held a healthy two-stroke lead as he stood on the 18th tee after holing out from a bunker on the par five 10th and making two further gains on the 13th and 14th holes, adding to his three under par front nine. He hit his second shot on the 18th just short of the green and then chipped in from 14 yards for his second eagle of the day, moving to nine-under.

He sits clear of Spain’s Borja Virto, Felix Palson of Sweden and Englishman Richard Bland, who each carded five-under 65s at Massereene, the second host venue of the innovative event. Eleven players share fourth place on four-under, including Filippo Celli, who won the Silver Medal at The 150th Open at St Andrews after finishing as low amateur, and Thomas Aiken, who is making his first start since the South African Open last December.

The ISPS Handa is tri-sanctioned by the DP World Tour, Ladies European Tour and LPGA Tour, with men’s and women’s tournaments played on the same courses at the same time for two equal prize funds of US$1.5million. Competitors play one round at Galgorm Castle and Massereene Golf Clubs on Thursday and Friday, with the final two rounds of action taking place at Galgorm.

In the women’s competition, American Amanda Doherty carded a six-under 67 at Galgorm Castle to take a one stroke lead into the second round. She sits ahead of compatriot Lauren Coughlin and Solheim Cup players Georgia Hall, Leona Maguire and Emily Kristine Pedersen who share second on five-under.

“I played the pro-am with Niall (Horan) and Robbie Keane yesterday and I kept hitting a lot of bunkers,” said Ferguson. “They were saying, you love the bunkers. See you tomorrow. Just try and stay out of them. Today was just nice to avoid them, which was good. Obviously a 61, so course record is pretty nice.

“It is hard to follow a low round, because I had that kind of situation a couple weeks ago on St Andrews when I shot 11-under and the next day the feel was quite different. I was thinking: ‘Jeez, I was seven-under at this point yesterday and I’m one-under or level. So it is hard, but at the end of the day your golf ball doesn’t know what score you’re on, so just keep that in mind and try and just keep doing what I’m doing.”

Doherty equalled her career-best round on the LPGA Tour of 67 to lead by one.

“I was really just trying to stay in the moment today, and I feel like I was just kind of in that mindset starting the day,” said the LPGA Tour rookie. “I stayed patient. I know it’s kind of cliche, but it works. I was hitting the ball well. I made a couple good putts and there were some reachable par-fives, so it just kind of came together.

“I thought it was awesome out there. This is like perfect weather for me, and the course is in great shape. You don’t often get to play two courses, so it’s definitely interesting. A totally new game plan tomorrow. I’m just trying to stick to the same thing and stay patient and hopefully have a good round.”

Scot Ewen Ferguson overcomes three shot deficit to claim maiden DP World Tour title in Doha

Scotland’s Ewen Ferguson claimed his first DP World Tour title, producing a fine finish in windy conditions to win the 2022 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters by one shot.

Ferguson went into Sunday’s final round three shots adrift of overnight co-leaders Adrian Meronk of Poland and England’s Matthew Jordan but as the duo slipped on the back nine, the European Challenge Tour graduate was able to take full advantage, firing an eagle and a birdie in his last three holes to lift the trophy.

“It’s unbelievable. I can’t believe it. Really just speechless that I’ve won and I’ve just seen that I might move up to 11th in the Rankings, which is just unbelievable,” said Ferguson.

“I can’t believe it. It’s years and years of hard work. My mum, dad, brother and sister and my whole family have given everything for me to have this moment and it’s just an absolute dream come true.

After shrugging off the disappointment of a double-bogey at the second hole, Ferguson birdied the sixth before carding nine straight pars at Doha Golf Club.

A tremendous chip-in eagle from over the back of the 16th green propelled the 25-year-old into a share of the lead, and he calmly holed a 16-foot birdie putt at the last to sign for a closing 70 and set the clubhouse target on seven under par.

“As for the chip in, I called it before I hit it to my caddie as I said it was a hole-able one. I’d been practising my chipping this morning and as soon as I hit it I thought that looks good and sure it was,” said Ferguson.

“It was one of those days when you just kept fighting to the end. I’d been in contention a bit over the last couple of years and not managed to win, to the point where I thought I don’t know if I’ll ever manage to win. Just to get over the line is an absolute dream come true. I cannot believe it.

“It feels amazing. Actually Bob MacIntyre just sent me a text with a video of when I was 18 or 19 acting like an idiot and he said, ‘I can’t believe this guy has just won’.

“Everyone is so happy for me. Connor Syme, my best pal out here, is so happy for me as are his family and all my family and hopefully I can inspire a lot more people to play golf and get out here and get over the line as well.

“Connor has text me and called me a stud. He just loves that I won and said that he knew it was coming. He’s just the nicest guy and has helped me with my game.

Ferguson faced an anxious wait as Meronk and Jordan still had a handful of holes to complete, but no-one could catch the Scot and he was able to celebrate his first professional win, joining Andrew Coltart (1998) and Paul Lawrie (1999 and 2012) as Scottish winners of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.

Ferguson’s playing partner Chase Hanna of the United States finished alone in second place on six under after he rounded off his Sunday 71 with a birdie at the 18th. Meronk and Swede Marcus Kinhult were another shot further back in a tie for third, with Jordan amongst a group of seven players at four under par.
