Octavio Passos

A week after saying that “nothing else matters” upon winning the Amundi Evian Championship in her home country of France (“I’m really good for the rest of the year”), Celine Boutier proceeded to win yet again, cruising to a two-shot victory at the Women’s Scottish Open after a final-round 70 at Dundonald Links in North Ayrshire. In the process, the 29-year-old became the first Evian champ to win the next week since the event became a major in 2013.

To call it a career year for Boutier, 29, would be an understatement. In addition to her three victories — most of any player on the LPGA Tour in 2023 — Boutier has three other top-10 finishes on the season. The $300,000 first-place prize money payout puts her past the $2 million mark in earnings for the year. She also now leads the CME Group points list.

Celine Boutier. Women’s Scottish Open

World No.4 and 2023 Evian Champion Celine Boutier, who started the day five shots adrift of the lead, showed no sign of fatigue from winning her first major last weekend to move three shots clear in the Women’s Scottish Open with a stunning third round of 66 at Dundonald Links.

Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit, a fellow major winner, also shot 66 to see her climb up the leaderboard on moving day into tied second place alongside Maja Stark, whose par 72 had promised so much more with four birdies over the first 10 holes. The leader at the halfway stage, Japanese star Hinako Shibuno, had a disappointing Saturday that saw her move in the wrong direction dropping to T6 following a 77.

Boutier rolled in birdies on holes two, three, five and seven before dropping a shot on the ninth. She continued to impress with birdies on 12 and 14 followed by a bogey on 15 but she finished in style with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 for her round of six-under.

The major champion sits at the top of the leaderboard on 13-under in search of back-to-back victories.

Boutier rolls in a birdie at the last for a 66 (-6) & to take a three shot lead into the final day ?#RaiseOurGame | #FGWSO pic.twitter.com/r3XHF649wY

“I definitely feel like I’m hitting a lot of good shots, which is nice,” said Boutier, who was runner-up at this tournament in 2022. “Sometimes you envision shots, and it doesn’t always happen. I feel like today a lot happened the way I saw it. It was very positive and I’m very happy with my round.

“I’m just trying to hit as many good shots as possible. I’m trying to stay focused and I feel like this course is pretty challenging with the weather conditions. I’m just trying to hit the best shots possible under the circumstances.

“When you’re playing well, it’s easier to be positive about it. I made a bogey on nine, which also fired me up a little bit. It was nice to get some more energy going. I’m just going to try to hopefully play the same and stick to my game plan and see what happens.

“I’ve definitely been playing well and the fact that I got a good result last week also is giving me a little bit of confidence. I’m just trying to build off of that, and hopefully have a good, solid round tomorrow.”

Tavatanakit and Stark are back on 10-under.

Tavatanakit had quite the scorecard with her only bogey coming at the first followed by eagles on the third and 14th holes as well as birdies on five, nine, and 12 for her own round of 66 .

“It was just a good day, everything was solid. I made a lot of putts,” said the Thai star. “I just took it shot by shot and it just happened to turn out really well this week.

“I’m really having fun learning so far, and it is links so anything could happen. If you play well, you also need a bit of luck and it’s been helping me so far.

“I just want to have fun tomorrow and I’m not really thinking about anything and just go out there and play golf like I did today. It was really light, and it was really fun.”

It was a frustrating day for Stark who had a bogey on the fourth that was sandwiched between birdies on three and five.

The six-time LET winner rolled in back-to-back birdies on nine and 10 but then had bogeys on holes 11, 15 and 18 for an even-par round of 72.

“I just felt like I had a lot of good opportunities, but I just didn’t trust my irons today,” she said. “I did stupid mistakes on my putting where I changed my mind when I was standing over the putt, and then I aimed somewhere else, and then I missed. It felt like such immature golf.

“I want revenge, and it is nice to have someone to chase that is not too far away. So, it’s good to be in the final group. Tomorrow, I think it’s just a “screw it” mentality because it’s the final day and you know where you’re standing. You’ve made the cut, and now it’s all about getting the win.

“I’m just going to maybe not be more aggressive than the other days, but just have a better mindset and knowing that I can shoot a low round is a big thing. It feels like Sundays are always better than Saturdays.”

Sweden’s Madelene Sagström is in outright fourth place on nine-under after a round of 68, and Denmark’s Nicole Broch Estrup is one shot further back in fifth. Three players are in a share of sixth place with Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall, Australia’s Sarah Kemp and Japan’s Shibuno all on seven-under.

Hinako Shibuno. Women’s Scottish Open

Hinako Shibuno fired an opening round of 64 to lead by two strokes after the first day of the Women’s Scottish Open.

The Japanese star, who won the AIG Women’s Open in 2019, was bogey-free at Dundonald Links rolling in eight birdies.

Shibuno, who teed off from the 10th hole, began with a birdie and then made four on the trot on holes 13 through 16. And the major winner finished her round with a flourish making another three birdies in-a-row on holes six, seven and eight to sit at the top of the leaderboard on eight-under-par.

“It was really good overall,” said Shibuno. “I putted well. I like Scotland and I like playing in Scotland and the UK. I surprised myself with the four birdies in a row. I’m just being relaxed and more thinking about the sequence, the swing.”

Sweden’s Madelene Sagström sits in outright second place on six-under-par after firing a 66.

“It started really solid with three birdies right away,” said the LPGA Tour winner. “I made some really good iron shots today. It kept the driver in play and not fantastic, but I think my iron shots kept me in it. I made some easy putts and overall, a pretty easy day.

“I think it’s taken me a few years to figure links golf out. As an amateur, I hated it. I can’t hit it low, but I started working with Shane, my caddie who is Irish, two years ago.

“We’ve really been pushing it since and been able to be much more creative on the golf course and he’s helping me see the different shots now, so it’s really improved over the years. It’s been a journey.”

Three players are in a share of third place with Denmark’s Nicole Broch Estrup, Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall and American Caroline Inglis all on four-under-par.

Four players are one shot further back in a share of sixth place with Wales’ Lydia Hall, Sweden’s Maja Stark, France’s Celine Boutier and Australia’s Sarah Kemp all on three-under-par.

“I always love coming to play links golf. There’s something about it. You have to be creative. You just have to figure it out, especially when the wind blows, you don’t have to strike it. You just have to be very smart.”
“Having a proper cup of tea!”
On her approach in the last year since winning the AIG Women’s Open
“My goal is for it to be not a first and not a one-off. I wanted it to be the start of something to kick off. To be honest I think a lot of people thought, oh, 33, one hit wonder a little bit. Had a pretty consistent career just didn’t really get over line on the LPGA. But that gave me the confidence to believe, and when I got in that situation, it gave me the belief that when I’m under pressure, I can pull it off. So every time I’ve been in that situation, especially in Australia, it came down to the last few holes again. It’s like, okay, just stay calm and keep doing the one thing you’re trying to do that week. Again, it comes to sticking to those things and not veering and not thinking of the outcome. Get the job done and then you can think about them.”

“I like to play links golf. I think it’s a challenge but I think it’s more of like, a challenge on your patience than anything else, which I don’t mind. I think it’s a fun mind game to play. It takes a lot of energy. You can’t hit the ball like you did last week. It’s a different kind of mindset. I like to play links golf.
On the pressure of being the home favourite
“Obviously it is a bit more. You want to do well. It’s an event that you look forward to all year. Kind of got it in my mind that I want to play well at the Scottish. But I think more experience playing it and coming back, you know, I think helps, and having a good week last week, as well, I think helps as well going into the next few weeks. Yeah, hopefully I can just relax and enjoy it.”
On Dundonald Links
“I think it actually really grew on me last year. We played it when I was a rookie on the LET, I think 2016 or 2017. Played it both years and it really grew on me last year, and obviously playing well probably helps, as well. Got some good memories. I think I had a nice eagle putt last year on, I think it was the fifth hole, par 5 over there, and kind of went birdie, eagle, birdie. So I have some good memories from last year.”

On what the Japanese fans thought of her rookie win in Scotland…
“When I went back to Japan, all the Japanese fans, they already know the bunkers and the course is very difficult. So they were very happy that I was able to win in that condition, and everybody said great job, great job.”
On her tactics this week…
“I’m only trying to be a good friend with the wind on this course and enjoy my golf this week.”

On winning her first major in front of her home fans…
“I never really pictured how it was going to happen. Obviously it was such a dream for me. I wouldn’t even call it a goal for me this year. I obviously wanted to perform well in the majors. But in the past I was never really able to play well in Evian, just the pressure of everything was a lot for me to handle and this year, I just decided to really do it for myself and not put so much pressure on myself. The fact that I even had a chance to play for the win in the final round was a big advantage for me and to pull it off on the final day to, have the crowd behind you, which I never imagined that they would be so loud and so energetic, so passionate about it. It felt like a win for me and it felt like a win for them as well. To be able to share it with everyone in my home country is an absolute dream come true.”
On why she is here this week after the biggest victory of her life…
“I had a very good week last year on this course. I feel like I really enjoy playing in links course. And I feel like even though Walton Heath is not going to be like links, traditional links, I feel like it’s still good to be in the UK and Scotland and to be able to get a feel for the wind and weather and stuff like that. I feel like it was going to be a good week to prepare for the British.”

Allisen Corpuz
World No. 7

Won her first major at this year’s US Women’s Open at Pebble Beach

In her rookie year on the LPGA, she made 17 of 21 cuts and finished the year at 41st on the Rolex World Rankings

Member of the victorious 2021 Curtis Cup team in Wales, which was also her first-time playing links golf

Making her second appearance at the Women’s Scottish Open

On returning to Dundonald Links…
“I think it’s definitely a gettable course. There’s a lot of birdie opportunities. There’s just a few holes that play a little tougher, a little longer and especially with the wind it can definitely be tough to gauge just yardages in, how much the ball is going to roll out, even into the wind, how much the wind is going to play a factor there. So really just coming in with a little more knowledge and trying to score a little better this year.”
On what she enjoys most about links golf…
“Yeah, I haven’t quite figured it out yet but I think it’s really fun. I think it’s great to watch drives roll like a hundred yards and be thinking, Oh, it’s going to roll up 50 yards to the green. I think that’s really fun. It definitely just takes some extra time, a little more thought, but I love it.”
On staying onsite this week…
“It’s beautiful and a very spacious room. Very nice shower. It’s just nice to be able to roll out of bed and just walk on to property. It’s nice to be able to see the course from the room. Haven’t had dinner here yet but the food has been really good so far.”

The field is set for this week’s 2023 Women’s Scottish Open with seven of the world’s top 10, 19 major champions, including Open champ Celine Boutier, and 19 Solheim Cup stars unveiled for the Dundonald Links showdown from August 3-6.

Scottish No.1 Gemma Dryburgh enjoying her best major finish to date at the Amundi Evian Championship at the weekend (T-8), will be joined by compatriots Louise Duncan and Heather Macrae. Duncan won the 2021 Women’s Amateur Championship to qualify into the 2021 Women’s Open where she finished tied 10th to win the Smyth Salver award for low amateur. The 23 year old turned professional ahead of last year’s event and has earned three top-15 finishes this season.

“Last year’s Women’s Scottish Open was my first start as a professional and a huge life moment for me,” Duncan said. “Hopefully I can use what I’ve learnt from the first year of being professional to have a great week at my home open.”

Stirling native Macrae has made over 60 starts on the Ladies European Tour including a T-6 finish at the 2013 Women’s Scottish Open. In 2019, Macrae was diagnosed with cervical cancer and just two weeks before a major operation she won the WPGA Championship to book a place on the Women’s PGA Cup team later that year.

Invitations have been awarded to Hong Kong’s Tiffany Chan, Virginie Ding and Wei Wei Zhang who are not otherwise exempt into the field this year. Chan, a two-time Olympian and winner of the 2016 Hong Kong Ladies Open, will be making her second appearance at the Scottish Open. Ding is a junior at Vanderbilt University in Nashville who recently won the Women’s Orlando Amateur Championship. The 21-year-old earned top-10 finishes at both the 2022 and 2023 Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific championship and will be making her debut on Scottish soil. Zhang is playing her second year on the LPGA after winning five-times on the CLPGA, including four times in 2019. Her win at the Trust Golf Thailand LPGA Masters made her the first player to win four times in one season on the CLPGA.

Japan’s Ayaka Furue came into the 2022 LPGA season with some lofty expectations. The 22-year-old had won seven times previously on the pro circuit in her home country and finished seventh in LPGA Q Series to earn qualify for her rookie season in the US. While finishing second at the Bank of Hope LPGA Match Play, and making 13 cuts in 14 stroke-play starts, her best showing to date, however, was only a T-17.

That changed on Sunday when Furue shot a blistering 10-under 62 at the Dundonald Links. It pushed her past Lydia Ko and Celine Boutier to claim the title at the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open. With the victory, Furue won the first-place prize money payout of $300,000 from an overall purse of $2 million. That almost doubled her season/career earnings ($377,285).

Furue joins Atthaya Thitikul as the only other rookie to win on tour in 2022 and the fifth first-time winner, joining Jennifer Kupcho, Nana Koerstz Madsen and Leona Maguire.

By Matt Smith
Japan’s Ayaka Furue stunned the leaders and stormed to a maiden LPGA and Ladies European Tour victory with a course record 62 at the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open.

The 22-year-old began the day in a tie for ninth place, five shots behind the leading duo of Celine Boutier and Lydia Ko, but quickly powered her way through the field.

Furue kicked into top gear rolling in six birdies in-a-row from holes six through to 11 to put herself in contention.

Another birdie on 15 put the seven-time JLPGA winner in front and back-to-back birdies on the last two holes sealed victory on 21-under-par in Furue’s first appearance at the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open.

“My shots and putting and all-around game were very good and when I needed to make big birdie putts, I was able to make them,” said the rookie, who had Glaswegian Michael Scott on her bag.

“With this win, it builds up a lot of confidence for me and I’m looking forward to having more big tournaments and playing at next week’s AIG Women’s Open.

“Mike is always a big help to me, and I am so happy that I was able to win in Scotland and near his hometown of Glasgow.”

France’s Boutier, who was the co-leader after 54 holes, finished in second place after producing a round of 69 on the final day.

The two-time Solheim Cup winner had seven birdies and four bogeys on her scorecard on the fourth day to have a total of 18-under-par at Dundonald Links.

“Starting the round, I knew I had to shoot a low score, even though I was tied for the lead,” said Boutier. “And on this course, you can score pretty low. I was trying to focus on my own game and not pay too much attention on the leaderboard. She just had a really great day, so there was nothing I could have done.

“Obviously, I’m a bit disappointed at the moment but I feel like my game has been very solid all week and I put myself in position. Playing the final round, in the final group, is not always easy to manage. I feel like hopefully I’m going to gain some experience from this and next time I’ll be lifting the trophy.”

With the final major of the year next week at Muirfield, Boutier is going to take the positives and what she has learned here into the AIG Women’s Open.

She added: “I feel pretty good. I feel like my irons, approach shots and short game have been very solid especially, so I’m just hoping to take that into next week and it is great preparation.

“I feel like that it was a little bit windy and there is a little bit of preparation for next week. That’s the main thing, I don’t think I could have expected a better week than how I played.”

Korea’s Hyo-Joo Kim and American Cheyenne Knight ended the tournament in a share of third place on 17-under-par after carding rounds of 66 and 65, respectively.

One shot further back in a tie for fifth place were American Alison Lee and New Zealand’s Ko, while Japan’s Nasa Hataoka finished in seventh place 15-under-par.

It was also announced that Dundonald Links will host the 2023 Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open co-sanctioned by the LPGA and LET in Ayrshire.
