Golf Digest Middle East Oktoberfest is back

Inspirational art: After 27 years in prison, wrongfully convicted Valentino Dixon realises a dream in Dubai

Valentino Dixon endured a living hell most of us could not even begin to fathom.

The now 54-year-old had spent more than 27 years in jail convicted of murder — locked up inside one of America’s most brutal maximum security prisons for a crime he didn’t commit, before he was allowed to walk away a free man 2018, exonerated of any crime after the real perpetrator confessed.

With a few magazine photos for inspiration — Dixon had written to Golf Digest asking for help, explaining how drawing golf courses had become a needed diversion — he spent his time in Attica prison drawing, perfecting his style over the many, many years with only some pieces of card and a few pencils to create his artwork. Wonderful, unique depictions of famous courses such as Augusta, Pebble Beach and the Country Club in Brookline emerged over the years — as did some of the most famous courses in Dubai, a place that had found a special place in Dixon’s heart.

While Dixon’s wrongful conviction, and Golf Digest’s part in his eventual release is absorbing, emotional and well documented, the man has finally achieved one of his dreams five years after his walk to freedom — visiting the courses in Dubai that he drew in prison to help him cling on to hope of one day seeing the outside world.

On Tuesday, Dixon visited Golf Digest Middle East’s offices in Dubai while on a tour to visit those courses that helped him through his darkest times — from the Address Montgomerie and Dubai Creek to Jebel Ali, Emirates Golf Club to Arabian Ranches — and talk about his journey.

“In prison you live in a dream sometimes, you live in your own world,” he told me, his eyes repeatedly drawn to the windows of our 33rd floor office, admiring the towers and the views of the ocean. “And you look for anything that can give you inspiration. Something that can give you hope, something that can invigorate your spirit. And looking at pictures of Dubai during my time, it had to be one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my life, even though I was seeing it through a magazine.

“While I was drawing these other golf courses, I said to myself: ‘I might as well draw the most beautiful place on the planet,’ which is Dubai, in my opinion. This is why I drew these seven pictures of these golf courses right here. And this is why I am here today.”

eGolf Megastore — the Middle East’s largest golf store — gets even bigger

Despite already dominating the market in the Middle East, eGolf Megastore is set to grow, with its Al Quoz outlet undergoing an extensive makeover, which will see the total size of the largest store in the region double to over 12,000 square feet.

The news of the upgrade to its legacy Al Quoz location follows the company’s expansion into the Dubai Mall last year, along with its newest location at the Dubai Hills Mall, which is set to open its doors this month.

Dean Cheesley, eGolf Megastore Chief Executive Officer, said: “We’re excited to announce the expansion of our first and largest store. Over the past 12 months, we began to modernise our legacy locations and introduce several new apparel and equipment brands to uplift our customers’ shopping experience across all our stores.”

The store expansion will be completed in two phases, the first step seeing an additional 1,500 square feet by the end of 2022, with work on the larger second phase to be completed in the first few months of 2023. Both phases involve little to no disruption to the operations of the store.

“As part of our expansion plan, our original offices, which previously formed part of the Al Quoz store, had to be relocated at the end of 2021. Since then, we have been working closely with our design team on the amalgamation of the neighbouring unit, resulting in a doubling of the retail space of the store”, said Dyootiman Pal, General Manager of eGolf Megastore.

The store is set to showcase newly dedicated apparel and footwear zones. The apparel zone features a modern take on the existing shop in shop sections and builds upon the existing line up of brands in the store. The footwear zone increases the number of options by more than 40 per cent and includes exclusive styles from Nike’s Air Jordan collection, along with the latest offerings from Ecco, FootJoy, Puma, Adidas, Under Armour, Cuater, Mizuno and Cole Haan.

“Our goal has always been to supercede our customer’s expectations through continued innovation. Designed as a modern golf retail experience, the new space is maximised through dedicated product displays and customer interaction zones, including wider aisles, larger fitting rooms and a premium family lounge”, said Cheesley.

On the top floor, luxury brands Honma, XXIO and PXG will each have their own dedicated hardware areas, with the US Kids Golf section relocating to a larger dedicated area for juniors on the ground floor.

“Al Quoz is where we started and is recognised by many as the home of eGolf. This expansion is a testament to our founding CEO’s vision and ongoing commitment to enhance our customer experience and develop the golf retail landscape in the region”, said Pal.

Poland’s greatest player and Dubai resident, giant Adrian Meronk has big dreams to play on the PGA Tour

The setting was low-key. But the ambitions are high. Sitting in a quiet corner of the Links Clubhouse at St Andrews on the eve of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Dubai-based Adrian Meronk is talking about what he wants to do and where he wants to be.

Two things are dominating the 29-year-old Pole’s thinking, albeit he is quick to downplay both from such a distance of time and space. A place aboard the 2023 European Ryder Cup team in Italy is first on the agenda, to be followed quickly by claiming one of the 10 PGA Tour cards that will be available at the end of the 2023 DP World Tour schedule.

“The Ryder Cup is definitely a goal,” Meronk says. “But I don’t want to force it. I know it is possible if I stick to my plan and play consistently good golf. If I do that, it will happen. It is a long way off, but I will do whatever I can to make it. My ultimate goal, though, is to play on the PGA Tour. And it’s not far away, given my World Ranking. I’ll be looking for some invites towards the end of this year and early in 2023. My only pro start over there was the 2021 US Open at Torrey Pines [where he missed the cut]. I like American courses. So I’m looking forward to competing over there.”

Both aims, it must be said, are well within the scope of this 6-foot 6-inch giant. Despite his already considerable size, Meronk is a man on the rise, as seven top-10s in Europe this year testify. Currently eighth on the DP World Tour rankings, the former East Tennessee State student won the Irish Open in early July and, statistically, is the 57th best golfer on the planet, his best ranking to date.

All of which is part of a plan that has been in place since early May 2010, which is when swing coach Matthew Tipper first set eyes on the then 16-year-old Meronk.

“It was on the right-hand side of the range,” says the Welshman, who spent six years in Asia in the employ of David Leadbetter. “Adrian was the last kid I looked at that day. There was a tree at the end of the range, and I watched him smash balls over it with a mid-iron. I knew right away. His shots, which were flighted a little too high for my tastes, had the sort of sound about them that tell you the player is doing something right. It was pure.”

It still is. One of the better ball-strikers on the DP World Tour circuit, Meronk is fast improving in what he calls the “scoring” parts of the game. This season he ranks sixth in stroke average, three places higher than last year. But the most important number in his repertoire is the “two” that now appears in the “wins on tour” category. After a series of podium places this season, Meronk claimed the biggest victory of his career in Ireland.

“It is very tough to win on tour,” he says. “So I was like most people in that I had to experience coming close without winning before I actually did win. So when that happened I knew what to expect. I knew how I was going to feel. I knew I just had to be patient, stick to my routines and keep believing in myself. As a result, I felt quite comfortable all through the final round. Which came from my past experiences.

“Before I had been nervous in contention,” he continues. “I tried too hard to ‘force’ stuff, instead of just letting it happen. Now I know it just about putting yourself in that position as many times as possible. And if you play well, it’s enough. If not, try again next time.”

Tipper contends there’s a lot of luck involved in winning: “But you have to learn from it all. Every great player goes through that stage. Sometimes, too, you can look too hard for problems. Sometimes you have to think you did OK and just got beat. It’s too easy to panic.

“We work on the basics, which are key because Adrian is so tall. We have to get those right so that his body can move properly. The next stage is to up-grade the shots around the greens, the wedges and the scoring clubs. We want to get his proximity to the hole down a bit. He doesn’t have to be world class in everything. Every day, the goal is always to get one per cent better in everything.”

Still, for the moment at least, Meronk is deriving pleasure from being the first Polish player to do, well, just about anything and everything in golf. He is the best-ever golfer from his home nation, one where golf is slowly gaining in popularity. Today there are 30 courses and, by Meronk’s estimation, maybe 20,000 golfers.

“Many juniors are starting,” he says. “Recently I noticed that a junior event I competed in as a kid, one that used to have maybe 40 kids, now has more than 200. There is more interest, but progress is slow. I’m sure my good play on tour helps though. It’s all heading in the right direction. My win in Ireland made the newspapers. I like to hear that I am the first Pole to do all kinds of things. It’s nice. Someone has to be first. I’m glad it’s me. I’m proud of it. And I want to make it as hard as possible for the next guy to say he is the best-ever Polish golfer. I want to make that really difficult.”

Dubai-based Chiara Noja secures Ladies European Tour card

Chiara Noja had a perfect homecoming as she secured her Ladies European Tour card for 2023 with a third-place finish at the Lavaux Ladies Open in Switzerland on the LET Access Series.

The 16-year-old finished five shots behind winner Sara Kouskova but was smiling like a champ knowing her playing rights were secure for next season and she can now relax back at home in Dubai, along with her studies as she prepares for her GCSEs.

“These months away from home, family and friends have been more stressful and exhausting than I could have imagined,” she wrote on social media.

As we head into the cooler months, Golf Digest Middle East is on hand with a tournament on one of Dubai’s premier golf courses.

Following the success of last year’s Oktoberfest event at The Els Club Dubai, we are back for Round 2 — bigger and better.

Join us on October 21 for a unique golfing experience as we celebrate Oktoberfest once more, and we will be on hand with a tasty brew or four to help liven the party mood and keep you going.

For an incredible price of AED 570 + VAT, you will get driving range access from 11am ahead your place in the 18-hole individual stableford event. A pair of German brews plus two refill vouchers will greet each entrant in their golf cart along with an Oktoberfest lunch box.

Following the action, there will be the prize presentation, a MyGolf simulator experience, along with Bavarian shots to keep the party going.

The winners of each division (Div. A 0-14 HCP, Div. B 15-24 HCP and Best Gross) will claim the coveted prizes and accolades, plus additional prizes on offer from our sponsors.

To be eligible for any of the prizes, an official EGF handicap/recognised handicap is required, and players under 21 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Chiara Noja prepares for Dubai homecoming after four-and-a-half months on tour

It has been a lot of holes, a lot of sacrifice and a lot of miles, but it has been worth it for Dubai teen Chiara Noja as she prepares for her final tournament on the LET Access Series tour this season before a well-deserved homecoming to the UAE.

The young German has been away from home — and school — for four-and-a-half months, while working on earning her full Ladies European Tour card for 2023.

“After 4.5 months of being away from Dubai and school, I’ll be playing my last 2022 LET Access Series event at Golf de Lavaux,” the 16-year-old wrote on Twitter. “I have never been more excited for the end of a tournament — I’m going home!”

Noja will tee it up on the LETAS one final time this week at the Lavaux Ladies Open in Switzerland — the 16th event on the 2022 calendar. The 54-hole stroke play tournament will take place in Puidoux, with a total of 40,000 euros available.

Noja is returning to the tournament having played in last year’s edition while still an amateur and will look to take on board what she learned in 2021.

“The golf course is definitely different from what I grew up playing,” she said. “It can be pretty hilly at times and there are lots of doglegs.

“It’s very different to back home in Dubai and last year was the first time I had played a golf course like that. This year I’m coming in with a little bit more experience under my belt, I’m going to try and hit in the right spots and miss in the right places.”

Noja will tee it up alongside Finland’s Karina Kukkonen and Norway’s Renate Grimstad. Though the 16-year-old knows that being comfortable and familiar with the golf course will matter, being able to deal with the changeable weather conditions will also be crucial.

She continued: “The golf course is pretty strategic, but it’s also pretty susceptible to the weather — it heavily depends on how the wind is blowing, how much it is blowing and if it is raining.

“If there’s sunshine and no real wind, then it’s going to be a really scoreable golf course and I can see scores going low, but if there’s a lot of wind blowing and it’s raining cats and dogs then maybe less so. We’re going to see how it goes and try and keep the ball in play and hole some putts.”

As well as leading the Order of Merit and aiming to secure one of the top six spots for a place on the LET in 2023, Noja is also top of the Rookie of the Year standings.

With her maiden professional victory at the Czech Ladies Challenge, the teenager has recorded eight further top-10s and two top-15 finishes in 2022.

However, it has been a long season for Noja and once the LETAS season is finished she will be looking forward to some normality back at home.

She added: “It has been a really rewarding season to some extent, but I also think it’s been tough mentally and physically. It’s been a long few months, I’ve not been home in over four months now, so I think the homesickness is kicking in.

“I’m really grateful for some of the golf I’ve been able to play and the opportunities out there, it’s been a great season and I’m looking forward to getting back into that teenager routine.”

Amelia McKee, the American golfer who was raised in Dubai and has just turned professional, is one step closer to her LPGA dream after making it through Q-School 1.

The 22-year-old graduated from New Mexico State University this summer as part of their fames ‘Aggies’ golf team, and set out on her own journey in the unpredictable world of golf.

Her ambition has been to become an LPGA Tour player — “I just keep going as I know I can reach the top,” she told Golf Digest Middle East — ever since she fell in love with the game as a 10-year-old in Dubai after her family moved to the Middle East.

And now that dream is within touching distance for Amelia as she made it through the first phase of Q-School in California, following seven straight days of hard work that saw the competition whittled down from 330 to 100, who now progress to phase 2 in Florida.

Amelia finished T-80 in the field on even-par, with a blistering 69 in Round 1 setting her up nicely.

“What a week it has been,” she said on social media. “Three days of practice and four competition rounds at Shadow Ridge, Arnold Palmer and Dinah Shores … in 105-115 degree heat! Only 100 advance and I could not be more excited to be one of them. Thank you to everyone who has been so supportive and encouraging leading up to, and through this week. It’s been a very stressful, nerve wracking and exciting process. I genuinely couldn’t have done it without all the love and support. See you in Florida!”

Stage 2 of Q-School takes place in Venice, Florida from October 18-21.
