Born in Ireland, but made in Dubai. The Godfather of Dubai Duty Free, Colm McLoughlin, spoke exclusively to Golf Digest Middle East as he celebrates an illustrious 40 years in the emirate of Dubai.

Colm, your career has been one of many tales I’m sure. From growing up in Ballinasloe to here now in Dubai, it’s been quite a journey!
Indeed, it has been quite a voyage. My duty-free journey began in Ireland in 1969, at Shannon Duty Free, the birthplace of the industry. In July 1983, I moved to Dubai as part of the 10-man team from Aer Rianta (the Irish Airport Authority) at the request of the Dubai Government to set up the duty-free operation. I imagined it as a six-month project but here I am still, 40 years on.

The face of Dubai must be a complete contrast from 40 years ago?
Dubai was a very different place back then. There was only a handful of buildings, a big roundabout, and not a great deal else. It was a tight-knit community revolving around boat trips on the Creek, piloting small planes to Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, and playing golf on sand at Dubai Country Club. Look at it all now! Now we have some of the world’s best golf courses here in the UAE.

How has the company evolved against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Dubai?
Dubai Duty Free is a success story that mirrors the trajectory of the emirate itself. From the early days we were tasked by the ruling family and in particular H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make it the biggest and the best in the world. To this day the core objectives have remained the same; to provide world class customer service, provide a wide range of quality products and offer value for money, all within a customer-focused environment.

What in your view have been the key ingredients?
Several factors have been led by the tremendous support and encouragement that we have received from the Government of Dubai and in particular from H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Duty Free. But the biggest ingredients for Dubai Duty Free is the dedication and effort of all our staff who I believe are the best in the world and of course our customers who are made up of travellers from all over the globe.

With your vast contribution into golf here in Dubai, what would some of those highlights be?
Firstly, I would say the privilege I was given to be captain of the Emirates Golf Club (1995/1996) and the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club (2007) I’m the only person to have held both captaincies. We are also extremely proud to be supporting major golf events in Dubai since their inception, the Dubai Desert Classic, the Dubai Moonlight Classic, the Race to Dubai and of course now into it’s 30th year, the Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup.

How special was it previously be to be title sponsor for the Irish Open on the then European Tour?
We are proud that our support as the title sponsor of the tournament for seven years has greatly helped restore the status of this major sporting event. And while it is currently under a new title sponsor, Horizon Irish Open, we are still here, continuing to support the event as an official partner.

There are the many other activities that Dubai Duty Free reach beyond the shops though.
The promotion of ‘Dubai Inc.’ was a core platform of our strategy from the beginning. One of the things we’ve done very well is support so many events at the highest level and all around the globe, Dubai Duty Free is effectively promoting Dubai’s sporting, leisure, and business facilities, which are second to none.

What has your time in Dubai with Dubai Duty Free taught you?
So far, I am most proud of the fact that Dubai Duty Free has developed a reputation for looking after its people. What is important in any work you do is to recognise the people who work for you. Wherever you are in life, do not lose touch with reality.

What will drive the next phase as the company moves into its fifth decade?
I’m very happy that Dubai Duty Free has grown to become the single biggest duty-free operation at an airport anywhere in the world. We are going to do in excess of US$2 billion this year in sales, which surpasses our pre-pandemic sales in 2019. So, if I were to forecast ten years ahead, I would be talking about US$3 billion in sales, with larger retail areas, more shops and boutiques, and around 7–8,000 staff members.

The UAE has long been a favourite staging post for golf events, with the DP World Tour leading the way thanks to its flagship Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Hero Dubai Desert Classic and season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

We also just witnessed the male and female amateurs stake a claim for the future at the World Amateur Team Championships in the UAE capital.

Of course, we know there will be company aplenty in 2024 as the Ras Al Khaimah Championship returns at Al Hamra Golf Club in January alongside the new Dubai Invitational at Dubai Creek Resort.

As if that wasn’t enough to sate the golf-hungry fans in the UAE, we have another new arrival as the embryonic LIV Golf League takes another step on its journey.

Following the drama at the LIV Golf Individual Championship showdown at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club in Jeddah, where Talor Gooch and Brooks Koepka took the plaudits, and then the Team Championship finale at Trump Doral’s Blue Monster in Miami, where Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers stole the show, there is still some unfinished business.

Brooks picked up around $8 million for claiming the title at Royal Greens — and finishing third in the season-long Individual Championship points race behind Gooch ($18 million bonus for his stellar efforts on Sunday) and Aussie superstar Cameron Smith.

However, Koepka Jnr — younger brother and fellow Smash teammate Chase — has a more uncertain future as he was relegated as one of the bottom four in the season-long LIV standings. He finished last in the field in Jeddah and accrued only one point all season. He is now relegated out of the league along with Jed Morgan, James Piot and Sihwan Kim. The younger Koepka posted just one top-25 finish in 13 starts this season.

There is still a way back for that quartet as they will now head to the Promotions event in Abu Dhabi, where they will take on the best from the Asian Tour and beyond, with three spots up for grabs at the National Course.

The International Series winner — which looks like Andy Ogletree as we stand — earns an automatic spot, while a huge field will fight for the three remaining spots. Players from the Asian Tour will be joined by the top 200 eligible in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), and the top 20 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, the amateur champions from the United States, Great Britain, Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. All are expected to line up in Abu Dhabi. In addition, players ranked sixth through 32nd on the International Series Order of Merit will compete for the three-round, winner-takes-all event from December 8-10.

After the first round, there will be a mammoth cut so that only the top 20 and ties will play on Saturday in Abu Dhabi. They will be joined by the four LIV Golf bottom guys — Koepka, Morgan, Piot and Kim.

The final round will be played over 36 holes and cut to the top 16 players. While Ogletree looks like a shoo-in, everything else is up for grabs.

Before all that, of course, we have a lot to be settled elsewhere.

The Ladies European Tour Race to Costa del Sol will be settled in the Spanish sun following the Aramco Team Series finale in Saudi Arabia, the Asian Tour hopefuls will also decide their Order of Merit and the opportunity to join the high-rolling LIV Golf League and, of course, the DP World Tour comes into Dubai for their final event at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

The DP World Tour Championship serves as a bit of a doubleheader as Jon Rahm looks to defend his crown and go for a record fourth individual title, while Rory McIlroy will take aim at a fifth season-long coveted Race to Dubai gong.

With Rahm and Rory meeting up with their winning fellow Team Europe Ryder Cup teammates, including Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Bob MacIntyre, Shane Lowry, Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick following their now-famous victory at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club on the outskirts of Rome, there will certainly be a party feel around the Earth Course throughout the weekend of November 16-19, as the latest band of ‘brothers’ reunite in the UAE.

Following on from his ‘bromance’ with Francesco Molinari in Paris the last time Europe claimed the trophy, Fleetwood was again the hero as it was up to him to nail the crucial putt that ensured Europe got their hands back on the beautiful little gold prize.

The US headed home having been handed a 16.5-11.5 hiding, but they are already plotting revenge when the visitors come to Bethpage Black in New York in 2025.

This month, however, it will be all eyes on the UAE.

With Europe captain Luke Donald sure to be on show proudly hoisting the Ryder Cup at Jumeirah Golf Estates, there will be many more memories to be made over the gruelling 72 holes of the Earth Course, etching another chapter in the UAE’s proud golfing history.

For a few more weeks, this will be Europe’s home from home.

DP World Tour Championship

The new-look DP World Tour schedule for 2023-24 consolidated the UAE’s place at the top table of world golf, with five events slated across the emirates, including a season-ending double-header.

Following the traditional early-campaign events in Australia and South Africa before the Christmas break, the Tour rolls into the UAE in January for three back-to-back tournaments — including a new arrival in the form of the Dubai Invitational at Dubai Creek Resort (January 11-14), before heading to Emirates Golf Club and the 35th Hero Dubai Desert Classic (January 18-21). The Ras Al Khaimah Championship at Al Hamra Golf Club rounds out the triple-header (January 25-28).

Both the Dubai Invitational and RAK event offer prize money of $2.5 million, with the Rolex Series Desert Classic having $9 million up for grabs.

In another revamp to the calendar, Bahrain will be joining the DP World Tour. From February 1-4, the Royal Golf Club will host some of the world’s top players to the resort, south of Manama, with a purse of $2.5 million.

Thomas Pieters thrived at a stormy Yas Links in 2022 to claim the Abu Dhabi Championship.
In one of the most significant changes, the Abu Dhabi Championship has been moved from its traditional January spot to form a season finale play-off along with the DP World Tour Championship.

Running in November, these two two final Rolex Series events of the season with have a pool of $19 million in prize money. The Abu Dhabi Championship will welcome the leading 70 players on the Race to Dubai Rankings to Yas Links, before the top 50 head back to Dubai for the showdown at Jumeirah Golf Estates, where the DP World Tour’s Number One player will be crowned.

At the conclusion of the DP World Tour’s 2024 season, the leading 10 players will share a $6 million bonus pool. The top 10 DP World Tour members on the final 2024 Race to Dubai Rankings (not otherwise exempt) will earn PGA TOUR cards for the 2025 season.

“Our 2024 season will see our members come together to compete across a global schedule, with greater opportunities and rewards than ever before,” said Keith Pelley, the DP World Tour’s chief executive. “The many new and original enhancements we have introduced will guarantee drama and excitement for our fans, our broadcasters and all our stakeholders across the entire season and means, more than ever, that every week counts on the DP World Tour.”

While Rory McIlroy had yet another stand-out season in 2022, it was, in some respects, another year of near misses and what-ifs.

The Northern Irishman became only the second golfer in history after Henrik Stenson to claim the points race on both sides of the Atlantic in one season — taking the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup and the DP World Tour Rankings as he reclaimed top spot in the OWGR standings.

However, the 33-year-old also failed to add to his haul of four majors for an eighth year and was powerless to stop Jon Rahm claiming his third DP World Tour Championship title in November, meaning his own chase for that triple crown has to wait.

Those 2022 near misses began back in January at the Dubai Desert Classic, when a visit to the water on the 72nd hole denied him at least a spot in a playoff with Richard Bland and eventual winner Viktor Hovland.

The majors drought then continued with a late charge only good enough for second behind Scottie Scheffler at the Masters, followed by an eighth place at the PGA Championship and T5 at the US Open before he watched Cameron Smith snatch the 150th Open Championship crown from him, having led the way after 54 holes.

Now McIlroy is returning to Emirates Golf Club as a man on a mission, hoping that a third Dubai Desert Classic title can get his 2023 campaign off to a flying start.

“I always look forward to playing the Dubai Desert Classic, having won twice,” he said. “Lifting the Dallah Trophy for a third time is on my list.”

The Desert Classic takes place on EGC’s Majlis Course from January 26-29, with the DP World Tour Rolex Series event offering a record $9 million in prize money for its 35th edition.

Simon Corkill, Executive Tournament Director of the Dubai Desert Classic, expressed his delight at McIlroy’s return. “Since the first ball teed off more than three decades ago in 1989, the Dubai Desert Classic has gone from strength to strength, attracting a wide array of top golfers from around the world, so to have Rory confirm his participation exemplifies how highly regarded the tournament is,” he said.

“He is one of the greatest names not just in golf but also in sport in general and we are delighted that he will be returning to Emirates Golf Club again. This is a fantastic opportunity for fans to see the world No. 1 in action on the Majlis course, a place he knows very well, in what will be another important year for him.”

As with every year, there will be a world-class field on show, with the likes of 2019 Open Champion Shane Lowry, plus DP World Tour stars Tommy Fleetwood, Ryan Fox and Tyrrell Hatton among those teeing up.

“I’ve had success in the UAE in the past, and it would be great to add my name to the impressive list of players who have lifted this trophy,” Lowry said.

Off the course, there will be plenty for visitors of all ages engaged, including live music, wide-ranging food and drink options, a dedicated kids’ day and all-day entertainment, plus the Junior Dubai Desert Classic gets going on January 21 and 22 to get the festival started.

Hero MotoCorp has been confirmed as the title partner of the Dubai Desert Classic, the second Rolex Series event of the 2023 DP World Tour season.

The Hero Dubai Desert Classic brings together Hero MotoCorp, the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles, and the DP World Tour’s longest-running event in the Middle East. The tournament returns to Emirates Golf Club on January 26-29 for its 34th edition and will once again boast a stellar field headed by world No. 1 and two-time Dubai Desert Classic winner Rory McIlroy.

The tournament was elevated to Rolex Series status in 2022 and will once again form part of the traditional ‘Desert Swing’, which annually attracts golf’s leading players to the region. The four-week series of events begins with the Hero Cup — a new team matchplay contest aimed at giving European players experience in the format ahead of the 2023 Ryder Cup — followed by back-to-back Rolex Series events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and concluding at the Ras al Khaimah Championship.

The new agreement extends Hero MotoCorp’s long-term relationship with the DP World Tour which began in 2015 at the Hero Indian Open. Since then, Hero has also supported the Hero Challenge — a series of fast-paced showpiece events and short form social and digital content, which have taken golf to new audiences — as well as the Hero Open, which featured on the DP World Tour schedule from 2020 to 2022.

Hero MotoCorp will be title partner of three events on the 2023 DP World Tour International Schedule — the Hero Cup, Hero Dubai Desert Classic and Hero Indian Open.

Dr Pawan Munjal, Chairman & CEO, Hero MotoCorp, said: “We continue to have a long-term partnership with the DP World Tour, and the Hero Dubai Desert Classic is an extension of this engagement. We are delighted to be associated with this iconic event and will now be supporting two much-awaited marquee tournaments in the Middle East — the Hero Cup and the Hero Dubai Desert Classic — as part of the traditional Desert Swing. It surely promises to be an exciting start to the season, and we look forward to seeing world-class golf on display.”

Simon Corkill, Executive Tournament Director – Hero Dubai Desert Classic, said: “We are delighted to welcome Hero MotoCorp as the new title partner of the Dubai Desert Classic as we once again prepare to host a global field at Emirates Golf Club.

“Hero have been supportive of golf, and particularly innovation in the game, for a number of years and we look forward to working together to continue the evolution of the tournament as we enter our second year as part of the Rolex Series.”

Keith Pelley, CEO of the DP World Tour, said: “It is my pleasure to welcome Hero MotoCorp as the new title partner of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. We are proud to further develop our long-term relationship with Hero MotoCorp and thank Dr Pawan Munjal for his continued support of golf in general and the DP World Tour in particular.

“January promises to bring yet another memorable edition of this historic event, as we once again welcome some of the best players in the world to Dubai for the second Rolex Series event of 2023, two weeks after an exciting season-opener in the new Hero Cup.”

The Dubai Desert Classic was the DP World Tour’s first event in the Middle East region in 1989, with former champs including major winners Seve Ballesteros, Ernie Els, Fred Couples, Jose Maria Olazábal, Mark O’Meara, Tiger Woods, Henrik Stenson, McIlroy, Danny Willett, Sergio Garcia and Bryson DeChambeau.

It’s the new year and that means one thing — golf on your doorstep, and plenty of it. The UAE Swing gears up for four weeks of relentless action across the country from the DP World Tour, with the added bonus of the Ryder Cup-style Hero Cup kicking things off at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, before the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Dubai Desert Classic and Ras Al Khaimah Championship bring some of the world’s best golfers to town. That is swiftly followed by the male and female versions of the Saudi International, where both sets of players will be competing for an equal $5 million. We catch up with the likes of Harold Varner III, Bronte Law, Charley Hull and Georgia Hall ahead of the big events at Royal Greens and also speak to Suzann Pettersen as she prepares to fine tune her players roster for the September Solheim Cup.

All this and much, much more in the January 2023 edition of Golf Digest Middle East available in both English and Arabic.
