Nicolai Højgaard will return to Dubai just two months on from winning the season-ending DP World Tour Championship for the inaugural staging of the Dubai Invitational from January 11-14, 2024.

The 22-year-old won his maiden Rolex Series title at the Race to Dubai Championship in November, by birdieing five of his last six holes to claim the biggest victory of his career, and he will return to the Emirate for the new four-day event at Dubai Creek Resort.

The Dubai Invitational will see a 72-hole strokeplay DP World Tour tournament played concurrently with a three-day Pro-Am team event, with Sunday featuring professionals only as Nicolai will join reigning Race to Dubai Champion Rory McIlroy in the field for the first event of 2024.

The Dane’s triumph at Jumeirah Golf Estates brought a memorable 2023 season to an end, which included victories as part of Continental Europe in the inaugural Hero Cup and Team Europe in the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone, as well as earning PGA TOUR playing privileges for 2024 via the FedEx Cup.

The 2023 Ryder Cup rookie already has a victory in the United Arab Emirates with the 2022 Ras Al Khaimah Championship at Al Hamra Golf Club in his trophy cabinet.

“I love playing golf in the UAE and it’s the perfect place to start the year after the winter break,” Højgaard said. “The conditions and the setup of the golf courses clearly suit my game and I always feel confident playing in Dubai, and with the pro-am format it adds a different dimension to the event, which I think is really exciting. It should be a great week and I can’t wait to get to Dubai Creek Resort in January.”

Tournament host Abdulla Al Naboodah added: “I’m delighted Nicolai has confirmed to play. He’s had an incredible few weeks during and since the Ryder Cup. He won the RAK Championship which Phoenix Capital supported a couple of years ago, so it’s great have him in the field again in January.”

The UAE’S most prestigious golfing event is back as the 24th edition of the Dubai Golf Trophy takes place at Jumeirah Golf Estates and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club on October 1 and 2.

The Dubai Golf Trophy will see the top 16 UAE professionals go up against the elite amateurs in a two-day Ryder Cup-style format. Originally launched by Dubai Golf, the event is rotated across five Dubai Golf courses — Faldo and Majlis at Emirates Golf Club, Earth and Fire at Jumeirah Golf Estates, and the Championship Course at Dubai Creek, for a fiercely competitive showcase of tournament golf.

Each team consists of 12 automatic qualifiers from the season-long UAE PGA tournaments and qualifying Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) events across the UAE. In addition, the team captains welcome four ‘wildcard’ picks, and two ladies on both sides. Jack Woods will lead the Professional team and David Guinee will captain the Amateur team.

A highlight of the golfing season, the 2023 event will see the Professionals defend their 2022 win against the Amateurs, their first since 2016 after a 16.5-15.5 victory during the final day at Emirates Golf Club. A continued feature within the 2023 Dubai Golf Trophy will also include the Ladies Challenge Match of the same format between two Professionals and two Amateur ladies.

The Pros celebrate winning the Dubai Golf Trophy last year. Supplied

Woods said: “I is a real honour to captain the Professional team in the Dubai Golf Trophy. The event is the pinnacle of our season and with the event moved back to October this year, the build-up has been even better than normal. After finally ending the Amateurs winning streak last year, we know they will be desperate to regain the trophy and we will have to be at our best to retain the win. As always, it will be an amazing couple of days no matter the outcome.”

Amateur skipper Guinee added: “We had a tough year last year, losing out by one point, and we will be aiming to win it back this year. We have a great mix of experience and youth in the team this year and I believe we can give the Pros a great challenge. It is always the best weekend of our tournament season and I anticipate this year will be no different. But, hopefully, with a different outcome to last year.”

Chris May, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Golf, said: “The Dubai Golf Trophy was founded on the principle of raising the profile of golf in the region and bringing both amateur and professional golfers from clubs all over the UAE together in a competitive and enjoyable format. The tournament provides a focus for players to aim for throughout the qualifying events counting towards EGF and UAE PGA Order of Merits during the season and culminating in a season-ending spectacle on two of the finest courses in the region – especially exciting this tournament as we host the event during the 2023 Ryder Cup weekend. Best of luck to both teams!”

The two-day event will be played on Earth Course on October 1 for morning foursomes and afternoon fourball matches and will conclude with the singles matches on Monday October 2 on the Championship Course at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club.

Long-time Dubai Creek golf and Yacht Club member John Fellingham has set a landmark by shooting his age — at 70!

The achieved the remarkable feat of shooting a gross score of 70 (-1) at the fine age of 70, one of the games rarest achievements.

Shooting your age in golf is one of the games toughest tasks, with less than 1 per cent of golfers managing to achieve such a challenge, but the experienced Dubai Creek Scratch Team Captain did so in sensational style, compiling a round of 70 (-1), consisting of 3 birdies on holes 8, 11 and the challenging 18.

At 6,849 yards, from the blue tees, Dubai Creek is well known for its challenging tee shots and tricky course design, so this accomplishment is an impressive score to add to a golfing CV at any age.

“This one of my greatest golfing rounds and something I’ve always wanted to achieve,” said John. “I was nervous with a few holes to go, as it’s so hard thing to achieve this in golf and of course you have to be a certain age to do it. I had a three-foot putt on my final hole to finish off the round, thankfully it went in.

“I’ve had a few rounds in the 60s, but I was a lot younger then.”

John’s handicap was 7.9 when he played this round, which meant his course handicap of 11 added up to an astounding net 59. It’s safe to say John ran away with any of the clubs competitions happening on that day.

John has been a member of the club since 1995, his best round coming in his 2013 Summer Open victory, firing a superb gross score of 67. In spite being three shots better, eight years on this round of 70 certainly takes pole position in John’s most impressive rounds.

Michael Major, Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club Director of Golf said: “John has been knocking on the door of this achievement for some time! As golfers, shooting your age is something we all dream of and so it’s fantastic to see John triumph in this challenge.”
