Luke Willett, renowned as the world’s fastest golfer, has achieved a remarkable feat at Jumeirah Golf Estates, setting a new Guinness World Record for the fastest 9-hole round of golf by an individual. The record-breaking performance took place on the Fire Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, just ahead of the DP World Tour Championship that gets underway tomorrow.

Willett, a 39-year-old PGA Professional, hailing from Buckinghamshire in England, demonstrated unparalleled speed and precision, showcasing his smart shot making skills with just the use of a 3 wood, 6 iron and pitching wedge, in an astounding display of athleticism. The official time of his record-breaking achievement was 20 minutes and 12 seconds and is another accolade the speed golfer can add to his list, which includes being the current British no.1.

The challenge was initiated by DP World, a global leader in smart logistics and title partner of the DP World Tour and DP World Tour Championship. Known for their expertise in efficiently getting things from A to B, DP World extended an invitation to Luke Willett to tackle this unique challenge – navigating 9 holes, measuring 2709 yards, on the Fire Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates in the quickest time possible. The Fire Course lived up to its name with the challenge made even harder in the sweltering 34-degree Dubai heat which still saw Luke shoot just +9 over par.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have set this Guinness World Record for the fastest 9-hole round of golf” said an exhausted Luke following the challenge “It’s an incredible feeling to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the sport, and I’m grateful for the opportunity provided by DP World. Their expertise in smart logistics is truly commendable, and I’m honoured to be a part of this record-breaking journey with them. This is only the start.”

DP World’s involvement in this challenge reflects their commitment to excellence and efficiency, mirroring the qualities that have become synonymous with the company’s logistical prowess. By inviting Luke Willett to break the record, DP World has not only showcased their support for sportsmanship and achievement but has also underlined their dedication to achieving goals in the most efficient way possible.

Danny van Otterdijk, DP World’s Group Chief Communications Officer, congratulated Luke on his phenomenal achievement, “Luke’s remarkable speed and skill are truly commendable, and we are delighted to have been a part of this historic moment. At DP World, we thrive on efficiency and excellence, and Luke’s record-breaking performance perfectly aligns with our values. We congratulate him on this extraordinary feat, especially considering the course and the temperature, and look forward to witnessing more milestones in his impressive speed golf career.”

Willett’s achievement not only establishes him as a trailblazer in the world of golf but also adds another remarkable chapter to the legacy of Guinness World Records.

The DP World Tour Championship takes place at Jumeirah Golf Estates from 16-19 November and represents the climax of the Race to Dubai on the DP World Tour, where the likes of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm will tee it up in front of thousands of fans.

Following the success of last year’s event, the Aviv Clinics brought to you by DP World OG Classic Golf Day returns on October 28 to Trump International Golf Club, Dubai, with celebrity captains and a whole lot of fun for all involved.

Tickets are selling fast for this year’s event so get yours now before they sell out. Tickets cost AED 650 for which you will get access to the driving range and practice facilities from noon ahead of the 1.30pm shotgun-start, 18-hole pairs shambles event.

Celebrity captains — including returning skipper, former Wales and British & Irish Lions rugby union star Tom Shanklin — will once again be one of the big draws.

“I really enjoyed the OG Golf Day last year,” Shanklin said. “I thought it was fantastic. Really well organised and everyone knew where to go, where they were teeing off and where the buggies were. Loads of free OG kit, you didn’t want for anything. It was very sociable and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“The format and scoring was all taken care of, and those are the best days. No one was asking questions and everyone knew what they were doing.

“Golf in the Middle East is completely different to what I am used to in the UK as, obviously, it is warmer, the greens are a lot faster. The greens are tough but good. You want to play on these greens as that is what the pros play on — like ‘glass’. They were so fast! The fairways are beautiful, not muddy like in the UK. It was like hitting off a green they were that well looked after. It was one of the best golf days I have ever been on.”

There was a time when the name of “Andrew Waterman” appeared in the draw for this week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns. But only a time. At 2.41pm locally on the eve of the event, “Waterman” disappeared and was replaced by Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and chairman of the LIV Golf League.

Al-Rumayyan, 53, will tee-up alongside Peter Uihlein, one of the four LIV Golf players competing at the DP World Tour’s AT&T National Pro-Am-style event. Notable in the same group, R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers will tee-up with his professional partner, England’s Jordan Smith.

Al-Rumayyan’s participation, originally under the pseudonym, was first reported by The Scotsman. Johann Rupert, chairman of Richemont, Dunhill’s parent company was quoted in the article as saying: “Sport is supposed to unite people, not divide. We need to get peace.”

In that respect at least, Rupert and Al-Rumayyan have much in common. The Saudi was involved in brokering the initial framework agreement announced in June between the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour and the PIF to create a for-profit entity that would allow the groups to share assets. And he is currently a key player in the negotiations to come to a final agreement before the end of the year.

“It was suggested to me a while ago that I should extend an invitation to His Excellency, but I only got confirmation last week to say he would be playing,” Rupert told The Scotsman. “And, if I am asked by anyone what we will discuss, I will be saying it will be support for amateur golf worldwide. What is happening in golf just now is not growing the golf. It’s only making the top 100 players a lot wealthier. We have just launched the African Amateur Championship, for example, and we need support to expand the credibility of that.”

The on-course meeting between Al-Rumayyan and Slumbers is likely not their first encounter. The pair were reported to have chatted during the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool in July. Significantly perhaps, Slumbers did not rule out the possibility of accepting money in R&A events.

“If I’m very open, we are and do and continue to do, talk to various potential sponsors,” said Slumbers two months ago. “We have a number of large corporate partners that help us make this thing happen. I think the world has changed in the last year. It’s not just golf. You’re seeing it in football. You’re seeing it in F1. You’re seeing it in cricket. I’m sure tennis won’t be that far behind. The world of sport has changed dramatically in the last 12 months, and it is not feasible for the R&A or golf to just ignore what is a societal change on a global basis. We will be considering within all the parameters that we look at all the options that we have.”

For those wondering how Uihlein, Louis Oosthuizen, Talor Gooch and Laurie Canter made their way into a field that does not include the likes of fellow LIV players (and former DP World Tour winners) Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson, Graeme McDowell and Sergio Garcia, a DP World Tour spokesman told The Scotsman: “The players are non-members [apart from Canter] and playing on sponsor’s invites. They also have no outstanding sanctions.”

ISPS Handa World Invitational. LET

With the final major of the year complete, the Ladies European Tour returns to Northern Ireland for the next stop on the schedule.

The ISPS Handa World Invitational, which is co-sanctioned with the DP World Tour and LPGA Tour, is next up on the calendar.

It will be the third edition of the tournament and Galgorm once again will be one of the venues, while this year Castlerock is the second course that the players will play.

There are two separate 72-hole stroke play tournaments for men and women with two separate prize funds of $1,500,000.

For the first two rounds, all players will play one round at Galgorm and one round at Castlerock Golf Club. The men and women will play in separate alternating groups on both courses.

In rounds three and four, the men and women will again play in separate alternating groups in score order (within the separate tournaments) at Galgorm only.

There will be a cut to the top 60 professionals and ties after 36 holes, and another cut to the top 35 players and ties after 54 holes.

Ireland’s Leona Maguire is the top-ranked player in the field this week as she is No. 14 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings with England’s Georgia Hall the next best at No. 16.

Hall finished in third place at the 2022 edition of the tournament while Maguire ended the week in 10th place with both hoping to improve that this week.

Five LET players head into this week off the back of best-ever finishes in a major at last week’s AIG Women’s Open with Olivia Cowan (T9), Alice Hewson (T16), Diksha Dagar (T21), Kylie Henry (T44) and Cara Gainer (T61).

There are three Northern Irish players teeing it up this week on home soil with Olivia Mehaffey, Stephanie Meadow and Jessica Ross.

Supplied

Ryder Cup Europe and the PGA of America has announced an agreement with DP World that will see the global supply chain leader become a Worldwide Partner of the Ryder Cup.

Established in 1927, the biennial competition pits 12 of the top professional golfers from the US and Europe against each other in a head-to-head match-play competition and has become one of the world’s greatest sporting events, captivating an audience of millions around the globe. The Ryder Cup is a complex logistical operation involving hundreds of different partners and contractors. DP World will be bringing its industry leading capabilities to help deliver the event by connecting smart logistics with the passion and precision of golf.

There are just over two months to go until Team USA get their title defence under way at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club just outside Rome, Italy, and DP World is busy working with Ryder Cup Europe and PGA of America to create the smartest, most efficient and innovative supply chain solutions to ensure the smooth running of the 2023 Ryder Cup.

This partnership agreement with golf’s biggest event strengthens DP World’s strong ties with the game of golf, and the wider sports sector, where it is on a mission to support the growth of sports worldwide through its smart logistics solutions. It has been Title Partner of the European Tour group’s main Tour, the DP World Tour, since the start of the 2022 season and the tournament Title Partner of the season ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai since 2009.

Daniel van Otterdijk, Chief Communications Officer at DP World, said: “At DP World, we are committed to supporting the growth of sports globally in reaching new audiences and markets through our smart logistic solutions. The Ryder Cup has become one of the world’s greatest sporting events, so we are delighted that DP World can play an integral part in delivering that for the millions of sports fans around the world. Whilst the partnership supports both our commercial and brand objectives it also allows us to showcase our global logistics network that is uniquely positioned to support the events partners and contractors with faster, smarter, and more sustainable ways of delivery.”

Guy Kinnings, Ryder Cup Director, added: “The Ryder Cup is a truly global sporting event which connects people around the world and we are delighted that DP World, which connects people through its smart trade and logistics expertise, have joined our commercial family. We of course know each other very well through our highly successful DP World Tour partnership and the Ryder Cup provides a wonderful additional platform to grow their booming business and in turn, we can utilise their logistical expertise to help deliver a truly world class event. We look forward to working together at what promises to be a truly historic match in Rome this September.”

As part of the partnership agreement, DP World will use the Ryder Cup as a global platform to engage with customers, prospects, and stakeholders, forming an essential part of its business growth in key sectors. Fans can expect to see a series of digital and experiential initiatives run in conjunction with the partnership including the presence of DP World’s ‘second life’ golf ball container in the Ryder Cup fan village, where fans will be encouraged to donate unwanted to golf balls to be given back to grassroots golf projects around the world.

The inaugural Korea Championship, co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the KPGA, will have a $2million prize fund on offer. The event will feature some of the most talented Korean golfers including three-time DP World Tour winner and Seoul-native Wang Jeunghun as well as DP World Tour stars and Ryder Cup hopefuls Robert MacIntyre, Rasmus Hojgaard and Adrian Meronk.

As a global logistics expert, DP World is leveraging its logistics and supply chain network to transport the container to key events around the world on the DP World Tour and has already collected more than 130,000 golf balls over the course of the DP World Tour.

The initiative supports DP World’s partnership and grassroots goals which aims to grow golf globally, drive positive community impact and make the sport more accessible.

This is the first time the container has visited Asia as the DP World Tour returns to South Korea for the first time in a decade.

To mark this special event on the golfing calendar, DP World has confirmed the attendance of local children’s golf academy, ViseN Academy, as special guests at the Korea Championship. The juniors will be given a guided tour of the event to learn about the container, donate some golf balls and enjoy the DP World ‘Long Putt Challenge’ in the fanzone.

Attendees of this week’s Korea Championship are being encouraged to donate any used and unwanted golf balls to the collection as part of the week, where prizes such as golf clubs and trips to other DP World Tour events will be on offer.

The balls collected this season will be donated to worthy grassroots golf projects around the world to grow the game further. DP World is focusing on three key areas of growth for the sport – golf for the disabled, junior golf and women’s golf – hoping to inspire and encourage more people to take up the sport.

Daniel van Otterdijk, Chief Communications Officer at DP World, said: “As one of our key business markets, we are thrilled that the DP World Tour is visiting South Korea for the first time in 10 years. When we became title partner of the Tour in 2022, one of DP World’s objectives was to help grow the game of golf globally and we are pleased to have had an impact in bringing the DP World Tour back to South Korea, together with our partners at the Tour and the KPGA. With our second life container initiative it will be fantastic to make an impact in another part of the world, having already supported grassroots golf projects in India, Kenya, South Africa and across Europe.”

Ben Cowen, Chief Tournament Business Officer at DP World Tour, said: “The DP World Tour is delighted to be coming back to South Korea for the inaugural Korea Championship Presented by Genesis and working with DP World as part of our smart partnership to help grow the game. The DP World Tour has stops all over the world, and it is great to see the second life container arriving in Asia with us for the first time.

DP World Chief Communications Officer Danny van Otterdijk has called for a truce between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV Golf, as the former European Tour seeks a resolution to its drawn-out feud and seeks to block players who have signed up for the new series from competing in its events.

The PGA Tour has already banned the likes of Phil Mickelson and Brookes Koepka from teeing up in its competitions, but a UK arbitration hearing is ongoing, with LIV Golfers such as Patrick Reed and Ian Poulter continuing to contend in events such as the recent Hero Dubai Desert Classic in the UAE.

Daniel van Otterdijk. DP World

Van Otterdijk insists communication is ongoing between DP World and LIV Golf, and he is optimistic of a peaceful resolution.

“Our friends at LIV Golf, we have great contact with them as the game grows in the region,” Van Otterdijk told Golf Digest Middle East at the recent Desert Classic, where world No. 1 Rory McIlroy edged out rival Reed for the crown during a stormy competition.

“All that needs to get sorted out in the coming months and we will leave that to the governing bodies to sort it out.

“But we have a great relationship with our friends at LIV Golf and we are continually talking with them. We do think it will be sorted out.

“I personally think that what LIV Golf has done is bring the game of golf back to the conversation. More people are now asking: ‘What is golf all about?’ ‘What is this new different tour platform going to do?’

“Some like it, some do not, and that is fine, but at least it has people talking about golf again.

“I did worry that after Tiger [Woods], he is obviously not playing as much as he used to and eventually he will stop, so what is next? Rory is doing a great job in carrying the baton, but who comes next? What LIV Golf has done is bring the conversation back to golf again, and people are interested.

“We think that, like the game of cricket [incorporating the IPL and world leagues]and what other sporting bodies have done, sensibility will prevail and people will talk, and integrating the schedules will prevail. That is only good for the game of golf.”

After a successful 2022, DP World’s Second Life Container is making its return to the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

To celebrate the relaunch of the golf ball initiative in 2023, Dubai Golf has donated 3,000 golf balls to support DP World’s grassroots initiative which aims to grow golf globally, drive positive community impact and make the sport more accessible.

In 2022, DP World’s container collected 130,024 golf balls at over 30 tournaments for reuse around the world. DP World is now on a mission to collect even more in 2023.

The balls get a new lease of life at grassroots projects around the world, with DP World focusing on three key areas of growth for the sport — golf for the disabled, junior golf and women’s golf — hoping to inspire and encourage more people to take up the sport.

“I’m pleased our Second Life Container initiative is back for the 2023 DP World Tour season,” said

Daniel van Otterdijk, Chief Communications Officer at DP World, said. “Last year was a huge success, with over 130,000 golf balls collected, it’s great for DP World to play a part in growing the game of golf globally and making the sport more accessible. Thanks to Chris May and the whole Dubai Golf team for their generous donation, the balls are going to an extremely worthy cause.”

Chris May, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Golf, added: “The DP World Second Life Container was a remarkable success in 2022. So, we wanted to help DP World with its collection in 2023, by donating 3,000 used golf balls to the initiative to get this season’s collection off to a great start.

Growing up, Victor ‘Manucho’ Marçal would never have believed that he’d be playing alongside the European Ryder Cup captain at a DP World Tour event. His story is an inspiring one of defying the odds to become Angola’s best and most-loved golfer.

DP World, the leading provider of smart supply chain solutions and title partner of the DP World Tour, heard about his incredible golfing story and his ambition to grow the game in his home country — breaking down stereotypes, regardless of social class — and wanted to help.

DP World

Born in Luanda, Victor started playing golf at a young age in his hometown in 1993, however, but didn’t have any golfing equipment, using a cork as a ball and a twisted iron stick as a club. A local woman helped him on his journey, giving him some golf lessons and an old club, making him practise every day, working on his game.

His dedication and perseverance paid off, having now won more than 60 national titles in Angola with dreams of playing in international amateur tournaments in 2023. It’s a story of smart possibilities, showing what can be done through hard work and commitment, against all odds.

Victor ‘Manucho’ Marcal played with Luke Donald at the Nedbank Challenge. DP World

Victor was invited to the Nedbank Golf Challenge — the penultimate event on last season’s DP World Tour — to play in the Pro-Am alongside Team Europe Ryder Cup captain and former world No. 1 Luke Donald, a day which he will never forget.

“It was exciting to be part of Luke Donald’s team, who is an excellent person and player,” Victor said. “I was very happy to be given the opportunity. It was a great feeling. I didn’t expect to play with players who were the best in the world. I hope DP World continue to support golf, and I thank them a lot for that.”

Donald added: “It’s a really inspiring story. I mean I think there is only one grass course in Angola, but Victor is self-taught, and he grew up as a caddie, and the players thought he was too good, and they said: ‘You’d better come and play.’ Now he’s +1 (handicap). He made an eagle on 2, he made a birdie at 12. A very homemade swing, he’s a great driver of the ball and a great player.”

Daniel van Otterdijk, Chief Communications Officer at DP World, also reflected on Victor’s journey. “Victor inspired us to get him to the Nedbank and give him that chance with Luke Donald,” he said. “He typifies what we’re trying to do, he is the kind of guy that will benefit from the DP World Tour, spreading its wings and giving many more people the chance to play golf who otherwise couldn’t. For us, he’s a classic case study on what we’re trying to do and it’s a wonderful story at the same time.”

Patrick Reed has confirmed he will not be relaxing just yet as he will compete at the Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland next week.

The 2018 Masters champion, who said he joined LIV Golf to spend more time at home with his family, is still getting around as be has competed in Boston and Chicago on the LIV Golf, England and France on the DP World Tour before heading to Scotland and then on to Bangkok and Jeddah for two more LIV Golf events.

The Dunhill Links is held across three of Scotland’s most famous courses at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns, where Reed will join 11 other LIV-ers for the $5 million event including Abraham Ancer, Louis Oosthuizen, Talor Gooch, Jediah Morgan, Shaun Norris, Richard Bland, Branden Grace, Peter Uihlein, Laurie Canter, Charl Schwartzel and Adrian Otaegui.

Players who compete on the LIV tour are banned from playing on the PGA Tour, but are still eligible for DP World events as an attempted suspension was temporarily blocked by a UK arbiter.
