By Alex Myers
Tyrrell Hatton didn’t win the Dell Technologies Championship, but on Sunday he was the talk of TPC Boston for his hot putter, his fiery emotions, and his golf ball “defying gravity” on the 18th hole. In short, it was one of the craziest — and most entertaining — rounds you’ll ever see from a tour pro. And the good news is that a lot more golf fans will be introduced to this rising English star later this month.

As one of eight automatic qualifiers for the 2018 European Ryder Cup team, Hatton will play on one of golf’s biggest stages later this month when the biennial event heads to France for the first time. It will be another chance for this top-25 player to showcase his skills, as well as an opportunity to really cut loose with passionate reactions. Let’s just say captain Thomas Bjorn doesn’t need to say much to get this 26-year-old going.

Fresh off his wild performance in the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, Hatton came on the Golf Digest Podcast to discuss his on-course temperament, Bjorn’s Ryder Cup captain’s picks, people mispronouncing his name, and that season-saving putter purchase at Golf Galaxy. Keely Levins and I also discussed Bryson DeChambeau’s dominant postseason, a hole-in-one business idea, and a co-worker’s costly Ryder Cup bet. Please have a listen:

By Christopher Powers
After his second career PGA Tour victory at the Memorial Tournament in June, Bryson DeChambeau appeared poised for a huge summer. Instead, it began to look like we’d remember his 2017-’18 season for some inconsistent play, an epic driving range meltdown at Carnoustie and a handshake controversy.

RELATED: Win Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Omega Dubai Ladies Classic Pro-Am spots

Yet in a matter of 11 days, DeChambeau has turned those awkward situations into distant memories by claiming the first two legs of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. On Monday at the Dell Technologies Championship, DeChambeau closed out the Labor Day weekend event with a final-round 67 to win by two strokes over Justin Rose. DeChambeau has now won three times in his last nine tour starts, bringing his career-win total to four.

The guy many refer to as the scientist tried to explain what’s been the key during this impressive late-season run. “Consistency has been a big thing for me,” said DeChambeau, who has locked up the No. 1 spot in the FedEx Cup standings through to the Tour Championship. “I’ve been trying to get that week in and week out, and I was able to kind of figure something out last week on the putting green and that’s kind of progressed me to move forward in the right way.”

DeChambeau had not been a bad putter this season, just not an elite one, ranking 48th in strokes gained/putting entering the playoffs. But that’s changed these last two weeks, as he ranked fifth in that category last week at Ridgewood and sixth this week at TPC Boston. If he can continue to roll it like that, he might run through the final two legs of the playoffs as well.

“All the little stuff I do in my book, if I keep doing the numbers right and I keep executing the right shots, I can’t do much more than that. If I keep going that route, I’ll be hard to beat.”

With the win, DeChambeau becomes just the second player since the FedEx Cup’s inception to win the first two legs, the other being Vijay Singh in 2008. No player has ever won three events in the same playoffs, something DeChambeau will have two chances at accomplishing at the BMW Championship and Tour Championship.

Rose, who fired a final-round 68, now moves to third in the FedEx Cup standings. His solo second finish was his sixth inside the top eight this season. Cameron Smith finished in third, giving him a second consecutive top-three finish in the playoffs.

NORTON, Mass. — Tiger Woods birdied two of his first four holes to climb within three shots of the lead on Monday at TPC Boston. It was as close as he would get all day.

In a familiar refrain throughout this comeback season, Woods was good but not good enough, failing to put together four complete days at the Dell Technologies Championship. One day it was the driver (he hit just eight of 14 fairways and was -0.299 in strokes gained/off the tee in Sunday’s third round), another his irons (he hit just half his greens in regulation in the opening round and left himself in some tricky spots).

RELATED: Win Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Omega Dubai Ladies Classic Pro-Am spots

On Monday, there was little doubt what the problem was for a second day in a row: Putting. Woods needed 33 putts and didn’t make any over 11 feet. He also missed three from inside 10 feet and overall made just under 64 feet of total putts, his fewest all week.

Afterward, Woods headed to the locker room and declined to speak to the media, the first time he has done so all year. Really, though, his putting, or lack of thereof, did all the talking necessary for the 14-time major champion, who switched to his third putter of the year earlier this week.

That wasn’t the only club to let him down, though.

On the par-5 seventh, Woods pushed his tee shot right and was forced to chip back into the fairway. His third shot came up woefully short of the green before he blasted a chip that ran 10 feet by. He made the putt for par but it was one of several opportunities lost.

Woods bounced back with a birdie on the par-3 11th, draining an 11-footer, but he gave it back three holes later when, after coming up short of the green, he tried to putt it from the short grass and ran the 80-footer nine feet past the flag then missed the comebacker for his first bogey in two days.

The final nail for Woods came at 16 when he took an overly aggressive line over water to a back left pin on the par 3. The shot came up short and bounced back into the hazard. He went on to make double bogey and finished with an even-par 71 to end the week at seven under, nine strokes back of winner Bryson DeChambeau in a tie for 24th.

With the finish dropping him outside the top 20 on the leader board, it leaves Woods at 25th in the FedEx Cup standings, meaning he’ll have a little work to do at next week’s BMW Championship to make sure he qualifies for the season-ending Tour Championship, where only the top 30 are eligible. Woods has never played a full season and not gotten to East Lake.

Next week’s venue for the BMW, Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Penn., should at least be familiar to Woods. The AT&T National, the tournament he once helped host, was played there in 2010 and 2011. Woods tied for 46th in 2010 but missed the following year’s event due to injury.

Icon Sportswire

By Brian Wacker
NORTON, Mass. — Earlier this week, Bryson DeChambeau said he’d welcome a pairing with Tiger Woods at next month’s Ryder Cup, adding that the duo could maybe “intimidate” their opponents.

Playing with Woods for the first time in competition in Sunday’s third round of the Dell Technologies Championship, DeChambeau certainly made a favorable impression on his potential future teammate, shooting a sizzling eight-under 63 that moved the 24-year-old to within a stroke of the lead with one round to play at TPC Boston.

DeChambeau is looking for his second victory in as many weeks and the fourth of his PGA Tour career. If he pulls it off, he would join Vijay Singh as the only other player to have won the first two legs of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs since its inception in 2007.

RELATED: Abraham Ancer an unexpected leader entering Monday’s final round

But first there was something arguably just as special: Getting to play alongside Woods.

“He’s my childhood idol,” DeChambeau said.

He hardly played like he was in awe, though, making an eagle, seven birdies and just one bogey alongside the 14-time major champion, whom he clipped by five strokes.

“To be finally able to play with him under tournament conditions, it was different,” said DeChambeau, who has played numerous practice rounds with Woods this season. “I was a little nervous, for sure. But I was able to get out there and execute shots and worry about my game and focus on hitting the best shots possible.”

It didn’t take long, either. DeChambeau birdied each of the first two holes, then added two more red numbers on the sixth and seventh holes.

“After I made the birdie on seven, that’s really when [the nervousness] went away,” DeChambeau said. “There were some tee shots that I left a little right and just a little nerves. It’s Tiger Woods, guys.”

Tracy Wilcox/PGA Tou

Once DeChambeau settled in, he cranked it up down the stretch.

On the difficult 490-yard par-14th, he piped a 320-yard drive up the right side of the fairway before sticking his approach to just inside 11 feet and making the putt for birdie. Though he bogeyed the next hole, DeChambeau bounced back with two more birdies on 16 and 17 then stiffed a 237-yard approach on the par-5 18th to a foot, setting up a kick-in eagle to match the low score of the week.

It wasn’t just the shots he hit, but the way he acted in the presence of Woods and the enormous gallery following them. Throughout the round and especially early on DeChambeau chatted up his boyhood idol. Both players seemed to enjoy each other’s company, even in the midst of competition.

“He’s fantastic to play with,” Woods said. “He’s great.”

He could also make a great partner for Woods at next month’s Ryder Cup matches outside Paris. Note to U.S. captain Jim Furyk: the duo combined for 11 birdies and a best-ball score of 10 under. Would seem to be two pretty good captain’s picks, no?

What does Woods think of the idea that they could intimidate a few people?

“If he goes around and shoots 8-under par every time,” he said. “that will work.”

NORTON, Mass. — Rory McIlroy shot a five-under 66 in Sunday’s third round of the Dell Technologies Championship. It was few strokes under the field average for the day at TPC Boston, a good-but-not-great score given leader Abraham Ancer’s 65 and Bryson DeChambeau’s 63. Still, it was enough to move McIlroy into contention at the Dell Technologies Championship, a tournament he has won twice before. Another victory in the event would give him two wins in an otherwise mostly forgettable 2018 season.

Afterward, however, the 29-year-old Northern Irishman declined to speak to the media. Not that he really needed to say anything. His putter toss after missing a seven-footer for birdie on the par-5 18th and a someone-just-kicked-my-dog expression on his way to sign his scorecard did all the talking necessary. It spoke for the level of frustration the Northern Irishman had on a day where he finished four strokes off the lead.

RELATED: Abraham Ancer an unexpected leader at TPC Boston

Despite seven birdies, McIlroy’s putter—something that has been an annoyingly familiar topic of conversation for the four-time major champion—let him down yet again. Only twice on Sunday did he make a putt outside of four feet, and he made just 61 feet, 8 inches of putts for the round. Over the first three days, he has taken 87 total putts, which included 32 in the opening round.

Poor putting hasn’t been the only frustration of late for McIlroy, though. He skipped last week’s FedEx Cup Playoffs opener, the Northern Trust, to spend time instead working on his game. He flew in his longtime coach, Michael Bannon, for 10 days of work on his swing in South Florida.

“It’s been a pretty long season,” McIlroy said earlier in the week during a pre-tournament press conference. “I played well for three rounds at Firestone. I didn’t play well when I needed to the fourth round when I was in the final group. And then I didn’t play very well at [the PGA Championship], and that was all to do with swing mechanics and technique.

“I just needed to have a couple of weeks off and sort of assess where I was at and what I needed to do to improve and go forward.”

And after a frustrating day with the putter, he apparently could use another day off from talking about it.

Coming into the week at 92nd in the FedEx Cup standings, Mexico’s Abraham Ancer was in need of a good result in the Dell Technologies Championship just to crack the top 70 and extend his season one more week. Even if he was able to accomplish that, the 27-year-old’s chances of making the Tour Championship in his second full season on the PGA Tour were pretty slim barring a breakthrough victory.

Following a third-round 65 on Sunday at TPC Boston, Ancer is now on the verge of that breakthrough at 13-under 200, good enough for a one-shot edge over Tyrrell Hatton and Bryson DeChambeau, who is coming off a victory at the Northern Trust, where Ancer missed the cut. On Monday, Ancer and DeChambeau will play alongside each other in the final group. Funny game.

“Very fine line, it’s a goofy game,” said Ancer, whose 65 included a front-nine 30. “Last week, I felt like I hit the ball really good, I just really didn’t make anything. I hit a lot of good putts I thought would go in but they didn’t, but it’s a very fine line from being right there fighting for the cut and fighting for winning the tournament.”

This is the second time this season Ancer has snuck up on golf fans and been in the mix through 54 holes. The other came in July at the Quicken Loans National, where Ancer shot an impressive third-round 62 but followed it up with a final-round 72 to finish in a tie for fourth, 10 strokes back of winner Francesco Molinari. Ancer played alongside Molinari that Sunday outside Washington D.C., and hopes to emulate what he did that final round when the eventual Open champion posted a 62 to win by eight.

“Definitely playing with Francesco at Quicken Loans, we were in the last group and he ended up playing an awesome round, flawless, completely,” Ancer said of what experiences he’ll lean on at TPC Boston. “I’m just going to draw back on that, see what I did wrong and what I did good and just focus on that, have a good time and play some good golf tomorrow. It should be fun.”

If he goes on to win Ancer will make by far the biggest leap of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, moving all the way from his 92nd spot to fifth in the standings heading into the BMW Championship. It won’t be easy as he’ll have to hold off DeChambeau, who carded an eight-under 63 that included a birdie-bogey-birdie-birdie-eagle finish.

“It’s never bad to shoot four under your last three holes,” DeChambeau said. “A little frustrated about 15. Hit a really good putt, a fraction too hard, made a 360 lip on me. That’s golf. It’s going to happen. But I was able to respond well. I think that’s the important thing.”

DeChambeau’s career-low 63 is his second 63 in the last eight days, both coming in the third rounds at Ridgewood and TPC Boston.

Ancer will also have to fend off Hatton, who is looking to make a similar jump in the standings after starting the week just outside the top 70 at 71st. The Englishman has shot rounds of 69, 63 and 69 to put himself in a tie for second with DeChambeau at 12-under 201.

Justin Rose was unable to get much going on Sunday, but still lurks just two back at 11-under 202 after a third-round 70. He’s tied for fourth with Australia’s Cameron Smith, who shot a bogey-free 67. Smith, who began the playoffs at 53rd in the standings, is currently projected inside the top 10. Like Ancer, the 25-year-old is looking to make his first tour championship.

Emiliano Grillo and Kyle Stanley are at 10-under 203, while Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau and Beau Hossler are tied for eighth at nine-under 204. Tiger Woods is six back at seven-under 206 after a third-round 68.

By Brian Wacker
NORTON, Mass. — Tiger Woods looked in many ways a lot like his old self on what was one of those immaculate New England late summer afternoons Saturday at TPC Boston. The 14-time major champion was ripping drives, twirling clubs and hitting that stinger.

Along the way were five birdies, no bogeys and big crowds. The fans here are sports crazy to begin with, and Woods hadn’t been in town since 2013, much of those last five years riddled with injuries, surgeries and struggle.

“You should hear the roars going out around the golf course when we’re on the range warming up,” he said. “That’s pretty cool.”

Once Woods was on the golf course he gave them a good bit to cheer about, too, starting with a birdie on the third hole, another on the seventh and three more sprinkled in on the back nine, dropping a 25-foot putt on 14, on his way to a tidy 66 in the second round of the Dell Technologies Championship.

It could have been even better—Woods birdied only one of the three par 5s on the course—and in the really old days it probably would have been but really who cares. Woods is also still seven strokes off the lead after Webb Simpson eagled the last to move to the top of the leader board by himself at 11 under.

RELATED: Webb Simpson’s dramatic final-hole eagle gives him one-stroke lead

Patrick Smith/Getty Images

It is also necessary to remind where Woods was a year ago at this time. One year and one day ago, his doctors had just cleared him to begin chipping after a fourth back surgery earlier in the year to fuse his spine.

“Never would have dreamt that I’d be in this position,” said Woods, adding that he has thought about the 28-second video he posted to his Twitter account just over 12 months ago throughout this season.

In the video, which was 28 seconds long and shot in slow motion, Woods was wearing black Oakland Raiders shorts, a white T-shirt with the sleeves cut off and hit exactly one chip shot.

“I was very nervous because I didn’t want to screw it up,” he said. “This is it. So if it doesn’t fuse, there really is no other option.

“I remember when I was cleared to hit long irons. My first 4-iron probably carried about 90 yards. I was just so apprehensive to start letting it go.”

This week, he hasn’t had any trouble letting it go. In the first round on Friday, he piped one drive on the 14th hole 353 yards. Better yet was his accuracy on Saturday. Woods hit 12 of 14 fairways and 14 greens in regulation. The four he did miss? He got up and down every time.

“Absolutely,” he responded when asked if he was happy with the round. “I played well today. I hit it well. I really rolled it on my lines.”

It’s worth noting, too, that Woods’ third-round scoring average is second-best on tour. And he’s got a favorable pairing on Sunday, teeing it up with his new best bud, Bryson DeChambeau.

“The only bad shot I hit today was my tee shot on 8,” he continued. “I stuck it in the ground. But other than that, it was a good day.”

The kind that 366 days ago didn’t seem possible.

By Christopher Powers
Webb Simpson’s improvement with the putter has been a huge reason for what’s been somewhat of a comeback season for him 2018, one that’s include a Players Championship victory, seven top-10s and a automatic berth on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. He’s been brilliant with club again this week at Dell Technologies Championship, where he ranks second in strokes-gained/putting through two rounds.

His best stroke with the flat stick was his last of the round on Saturday, a 71-foot eagle conversion that not even he expected to make even with how well he was rolling it. The lengthy conversion from off the 18th green gave Simpson a a bogey-free eight-under 63, and a one-stroke lead at 11-under 131 at TPC Boston.

“I was excited, and you just kind of laugh at those,” said Simpson of the eagle putt. “Because you’re not trying to make them, you’re just trying to get them close. Those moments are always fun on the last hole. Honestly, it brings back the 2011, making a couple of putts when I won. Just a great atmosphere out there.”

The eagle capped off a back-nine 31 for Simpson, leaping him over a pair of Englishman he’ll be seeing at the Ryder Cup in France later this month. Justin Rose backed up his first-round 65 with a four-under 67, while Tyrrell Hatton matched Simpson’s 63 with a putter he purchased from Golf Galaxy last week in New Jersey during the Northern Trust. They are just one back at 10-under 132.

Two behind them is fellow countryman Tommy Fleetwood, who fired a six-under 65 to get to eight-under 134. Even though he seems to live at the top of the leader board, Fleetwood is still in search of his first PGA Tour victory.

Cameron Smith and Abraham Ancer are tied for fifth at seven-under 135.

Tiger Woods, who struggled on Friday, bounced back with a bogey-free five-under 66 to get to four-under 138, six off the lead. He’s now posted two rounds without a bogey in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, something he hadn’t done since 2015 on the PGA Tour. Woods is tied for 20th with Rory McIlroy (67), Bryson DeChambeau (68) and Brooks Koepka (69).

NORTON, MA – SEPTEMBER 01: Phil Mickelson of the United States plays his shot from the 11th tee during round two of the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston on September 1, 2018 in Norton, Massachusetts.
By Brian Wacker
NORTON, Mass.—Under the previous U.S. Ryder Cup system, when the top 10 players in the points standings qualified and there were just two captain’s picks, Phil Mickelson would have already been on this year’s team. As it stands, though, only the top eight are on the squad and he’ll need to rely on being picked for the first time in his career.

“It is a little different,” he conceded Saturday afternoon at TPC Boston.

Though it’s unlikely Mickelson would be left off the team no matter how he plays this week, making the cut at the Dell Technologies Championship at least helps strengthen the argument for being in Paris next month and could make things at least a little easier for captain Jim Furyk. Lefty is 10th in the points standings but has just one top 10 since winning in Mexico in the beginning of March.

Early on in the second round at TPC Boston, that hardly looked like a certainty. Mickelson made two bogeys in his first four holes then doubled the par-4 14th after blowing his tee shot left and into a hazard, forcing a drop and leading to a double bogey.

Alas, it wasn’t long before he righted the ship, though, starting with a birdie on the par-5 18th and two more birdies on Nos. 5 and 7 to go with a nervy 5-footer on the last to save par for a one-over 71 to guarantee a couple more rounds and make the projected cut on the number at two over.

Had Mickelson missed the cut, it would have been the third time he has done so in his last six starts and his fifth missed cut in 20 starts this year.

“I’m just not focused on [the Ryder Cup] as much as I am glad I fought to make the cut,” Mickelson said. “If I play well it’ll be easy for [Furyk].”

Furyk will make three of his picks on Tuesday, with the final pick being announced after next week’s BMW Championship.

NORTON, MA – SEPTEMBER 04: Justin Thomas waves to the crowd after making a putt for par on the 18th green to win the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston on September 4, 2017 in Norton, Massachusetts.

The PGA Tour makes the short trek from New Jersey to New England this week for the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the Dell Technologies Championship. For the 16th straight year, TPC Boston will play host to the event, and it will be the last year it hosts its own playoff event. Starting in 2019, the playoffs will be reduced to three events, and the first leg will rotate between a New York Course, a New Jersey course and TPC Boston.

RELATED: Enter the 2018 Golf Digest Middle East Amateur Series today!

Fortunately, the chowdaheads can expect a great tournament this week before the tour leaves them for a couple of years. For the first time since 2013 they’ll see Tiger Woods, who had an underwhelming week at Ridgewood Country Club, struggling with the putter and finishing T-40. If he can fix his problems with the flat stick, Woods should have a good chance to contend this week at a course he’s fared well at in the past, winning in 2006 and posting T-2s in 2004 and 2007.

Boston fans will also get to see Rory McIlroy, who skipped the Northern Trust in the hopes of re-assessing his game and coming back for a strong finish to a season that had so much promise following a victory at Bay Hill for the Northern Irishman. Then, with a chance to win Sunday at Augusta, McIlroy faded away, and has not recaptured that Bay Hill final-round magic since. Like Woods, he too has good memories at TPC Boston, winning here in both 2012 and 2016.

Justin Thomas, the defending champion, is also in the field and will play on Thursday in one of the marquee groupings alongside Dustin Johnson and Northern Trust winner Bryson DeChambeau.
