Twenty-five years ago Cristie Kerr won the Girls Junior PGA Championship at PGA National. This week, she’s back, without her clubs.

The 20-time LPGA Tour winner will be an on-course reporter for Golf Channel during for its coverage of the Honda Classic.

“It’s just kind of a fun thing,” Kerr said Wednesday. “It’s interesting to learn about [TV] and to be able to see if I want to do it after golf, and I know [executive producer] Molly Solomon pretty well from the Golf Channel, and she’s provided me with some opportunities to get some experience.

“I think I’m going to have a blast this week because I know I can’t play. It’ll be a lot more fun for me.”

It’s not a career change for Kerr—the 42-year-old tied for sixth in her last start at the ISPS Handa Australian Women’s Open two weeks ago. Nor is it a first for Kerr. She’s actually had two previous stints on Golf Channel, appearing in studio during the Sony Open in January 2019 and in the booth with Judy Rankin and on the ground with Jerry Foltz at the LPGA Tour’s season-ending CME Group Tour Championship last November.

A break in the LPGA schedule in part made this week possible, with the LPGA off for a month after three events in Asia were cancelled because of the outbreak of the coronavirus (though she hadn’t qualified to play in them).

What’s Kerr most looking forward to?

“The experience of all of it, and seeing the guys play,” she said. “I’m a huge golf fan. I watch as much golf as I can.”

There are things Kerr will have to get used to, like how far the men hit it. That said, she believes she can lean on her experience as a player to help offer insightful commentary.

“I can read a lot of what’s going on between player and caddie to see if they’re comfortable or confident, or they’re uncomfortable,” she said. “I’m going to try to report on what I’m seeing and not talk about what I don’t know.”

As for what type of reporter she’ll be, Kerr isn’t exactly sure, other than to be accurate and let events unfold naturally.

“[I’ll] tell if somebody hit a great shot, brilliant shot, somebody hit a bad shot,” she said. “Try to talk about what I do know and not try to make up for what I don’t know about the players out here.”

She’ll at least have someone to lean on in Paul Azinger, who began his transition into television in 2005 when he worked as lead golf analyst for ESPN and ABC. Azinger is now in the lead analyst spot for NBC regular PGA Tour coverage and for Fox Sports’ broadcasts of USGA championships.

The best piece of advice Azinger ever got? It came in his early days at ABC.

“Just remember, let the picture be descriptive, you be informative,” Azinger recalled. “We can all watch it with the mute button on.”

CARLSBAD, CA – MARCH 24: Eun-Hee Ji of Korea prepares to tees off the 1st hole during Round Three of the LPGA KIA CLASSIC at the Park Hyatt Aviara golf course on March 24, 2018 in Carlsbad, California.
By Keely Levins
Standing on the tee at Aviara Country Club’s par-3 14th on Sunday at the LPGA Kia Classic in Carlsbad, Calif., Eun-Hee Ji of South Korea had a one-shot lead over a late-charging Cristie Kerr. Any hope Kerr had of pulling off the comeback quickly faded away, though, when Ji’s 7-iron tee-shot from 166 yards went in the hole. Suddenly, Ji had has a three-shot lead and Kerr, who was playing three groups ahead of Ji, was out of holes.

Oh, and as a nice bonus, Ji’s ace also secured her a new Kia Sorento.

Eun-Hee Ji wins a beautiful @Kia #Sorento with this ace on the par 3 14th hole during the final round @LPGAKiaClassic! pic.twitter.com/4XGAOAqhMV

— LPGA (@LPGA) March 26, 2018

There was, however, more golf to play, and Ji made it more intriguing when she bogeyed the 15th and 18th holes. Turns out, though, hole-in-one cushion would be enough as Ji finished with a closing 67 for a 16-under 272 total, winning by two shots over Kerr and Lizette Salas.

Given the name of the event, it won’t come as a total surprise that its winner gets a new car along with the winner’s check. Ji then had become the proud owner of a new Kia Stinger, which was waiting off the 18th green.

If you weren’t keeping score, that’s two new cars for Ji in a two-hour span on Sunday afternoon.

Most people who manage to win a car with their golf abilities broadcast the feat to the whole world, repeatedly. But not Ji. She won two and didn’t even know it. In her excitement over her fourth career LPGA victory, she didn’t even realize she’d won both cars until she was told in her post-round interview.

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA – OCTOBER 29: Cristie Kerr of the United States in action during day four of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia at TPC Kuala Lumpur East Course on October 29, 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
By Keely Levins
Cristie Kerr made a 35-footer for birdie on the 18th hole to win the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia tournament at TPC Kuala Lumpur with a four-day 15-under 269. When that putt dropped, a flurry of career milestones were met. The win was her 20th on the LPGA Tour. The $270,000 first-place check pushed her career earnings past the $19 million mark, making her the third woman in LPGA history to do so, joining Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb. And with the win, Kerr also became the first woman in her 40s to win on tour since 2011, when Catriona Matthew won the Lorena Ochoa Invitational.

All of that, thanks to the pressure-filled putt on 18 that helped her avoid a four-way playoff with Danielle Kang, Shanshan Feng and Jacqui Concolino.

“When I hit it, I could just tell it was going in,” Kerr said. “It was the most amazing thing. Like it was perfect speed; if it missed, it was going to be two feet by. It was right in the center never even thought about missing.”

Though the line the putt traveled was free of doubt, the same can’t be said for the rest of the round. Kerr had to work hard for this win.

A birdie on the second hole put Kerr two shots ahead of Feng. The defending champion from China had been in contention throughout the event. She went 62 holes without making a bogey and took the lead back on Sunday when Kerr found some trouble in a hazard on the seventh hole.

Other players, including Kang (who closed with a 66), Nelly Korda (65), In Gee Chun (66) and Concolino (67), continued to make birdies and move up the leader board. Soon, Kerr had a lot more to worry about than just Feng.

Neither Kerr nor Feng were getting many particularly good breaks. Feng found a hazard on the ninth, Kerr three-putted 17 for a bogey, and there was a weather delay that halted play for more than an hour. As they teed it up on the 18th, they were tied at 14 under. Concolino and Kang were already in with 14 under.

Both Kerr and Feng hit the green in regulation, and had long putts for the win. Kerr made hers, and Feng missed, giving her runner-up honors in the event for the third time in the last five years to go with wins in 2014 and 2016.

To make the victory all the more meaningful, Kerr, a two-time winner in 2017, is donating a portion of her winnings to breast-cancer research.

After the points are calculated, Kerr is projected to move up from seventh to fifth in the Race to CME Globe. It’s a significant gain, because if a player who is ranked in the top five at the beginning of the CME Group Tour Championship wins the season finale, she will also win $1 million CME Globe year-long bonus. The Tour Championship will take place Nov. 16-19 in Naples, Fla.

By Alex Myers

Welcome to another edition of The Grind, where we’re going to have to pace ourselves if the opening week of the PGA Tour is any indication of what we’re in store for this season. There were impressive debuts on the course, impressive performances on the stage and there was Phil (still) being Phil after all these years:

TFW you've hit 15 of 54 fairways on the week. ??#QuickHits pic.twitter.com/QU1VqEthvZ

— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) October 8, 2017

It was quite a start — and that’s before we factor in frightening wildfires, record-breaking performances across the pond and updates on two much-talked-about comebacks. Let’s catch our breaths and break it all down.

WE’RE BUYING

Defending champs: Brendan Steele made it back-to-back wins at the PGA Tour’s Safeway Open and Tyrrell Hatton did the same at the European Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Slight edge to Hatton for getting to celebrate on the Swilcan Bridge …

Well done, guys. Now if all of last season’s winners can keep this up, I might actually do well in fantasy golf this season.

Record breakers: Tommy Fleetwood and Ross Fisher didn’t win the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, but what they did at two of golf’s most historic tracks will be talked about a lot more than Hatton’s victory. Fleetwood shot 63 at Carnoustie, and Fisher shot 61 at the Old Course at St. Andrews — with both scores breaking course records. By the way, Carnoustie is hosting next year’s British Open, so based on our new horses-for-courses theory, Fleetwood is basically a lock.

John Daly: Talk about life imitating art. Daly joined Gavin DeGraw on stage to pay tribute to Tom Petty by singing along to “I Won’t Back Down” on Thursday night and then birdied his final hole on Friday to shoot 69 and make his first PGA Tour cut in two-and-a-half years.

The fist pumps. ?
The smile. ?
The crowd. ????? @PGA_JohnDaly makes his first cut on the PGA TOUR since 2015. pic.twitter.com/GsLaT1G3iT

— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) October 7, 2017

Actually, we’re buying Daly’s entire month, from presenting a sport coat to Japan’s Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, to finishing runner-up at a European Senior Tour event in France, to opening a steakhouse in Arkansas. JD seems to be hitting life harder than ever at 51.

Tiger’s comeback: Tiger Woods is back! To hitting irons. “Smooth” irons, at that:

Smooth iron shots pic.twitter.com/v9XLROZnfW

— Tiger Woods (@TigerWoods) October 7, 2017

Yeah, yeah, I’m getting suckered into another Tiger Woods comeback, but I can’t help myself.

Me: I'm done getting my hopes up for nothing
*Sees Tiger hitting full shots again*
Me: pic.twitter.com/Tup8vlrXCJ

— Golf Problems (@GolfProblems_) October 9, 2017

Tiger, if you’re going to break my heart again, just promise me you’ll do it quickly this time. Please?

WE’RE SELLING

O.J.’s comeback: On the first full day of the Juice being loose (again), Simpson was seen putting on a backyard green at the Las Vegas home he’s staying in:

We’re not knocking his effort — and at 70, he still has a few good years on the course — but his return to golf isn’t exactly great PR for the sport. Also, we’re pretty jealous of his backyard setup.

Phil’s fall policy: Remember a couple years ago when Phil Mickelson pushed for fall events in the wrap-around season to not count towards a person’s Ryder Cup point total? Well, that came back to bite him. Mickelson’s T-3 at the Safeway Open was his best finish since a runner-up at the 2016 British Open, but he’ll earn as many Ryder Cup points for his efforts as I did for sitting on the couch watching his efforts.

Unmarked golf balls: I’m not accusing anyone of taking advantage of the Rules of Golf, but every time something like this happens, it raises eyebrows and causes an uproar. At least, in the little world of Golf Twitter:

One of the worst #ProtectTheField examples I've ever seen.

It also probably only seems like it’s happening more now because people are making a point to point it out. Regardless, now that it’s become an issue, you’d think players would be even more careful about marking their golf balls — or telling opponents to do it — just to avoid this sort of controversy.

Silly penalties: This week’s “Hey, tour pros are just like us sometimes!” honor goes to David Howell, who teed off from in front of the marker. On No. 18 at the Old Course at St. Andrews. The gaffe resulted in an embarrassing two-shot penalty on one of the most famous holes in golf.

ON TAP

Winning wire-to-wire to claim her first Ladies European Tour title at the LaCoste Ladies Open de France, Cristie Kerr spoke of the inspiration and frustration that served as motivation at Golf de Chantaco.

The tournament honored the memory of Cassandra Kirkland, an LET winner who died of lung cancer at age 32 earlier this year. Several players donated money for each birdie they made to help fund the event’s cancer charity, with Kerr donating $5,000.

Kerr has raised nearly $4 million through the creation of Birdied For Breast Cancer more than a decade ago after her mother, Linda, was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. Cristie’s efforts have helped the Jersey City Medical Center start the Cristie Kerr Women’s Heath Center.

“I’m sorry, but f— cancer,” Kerr said after a closing-round 69 that gave her a four-stroke victory over Xi Yu Lin of China. “I’m so sorry to say the F wood, but I’m so sick of people losing people to cancer.”

Kerr, who turns 40 on Thursday, also was playing with a heavy heart after learning of the death of Peggy Kuehne, the mother of a trio of USGA champions, Trip, Hank and Kelli Kuehne, who passed from cancer.

“I’ve been having an angel on my shoulder all week,” Kerr said, having opened with a 62-64. “I was on a mission, and I got it done for them.”

Kerr won earlier this year on the LPGA Tour and will play in this week’s LPGA event in South Korea.

By Ryan Herrington
It was going to take a historic effort from the European team to erase a five-point deficit and somehow take back the Solheim Cup on Sunday at Des Moines Golf & Country Club. But the United States team wouldn’t allow it. Earning six of the 12 available singles points on Sunday when it only needed 3½, the American side finished out an impressive three-day triumph, winning 16½-11½, to retain the Cup.

Sunday’s first match out proved an example of the fire that U.S. captain Juli Inkster’s team demonstrated all week. Lexi Thompson struggled early to try and set a tone, falling 4 down through nine holes to Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist.

But then Thompson, after encouraging words from Inkster, regrouped, winning the 10th with a birdie, holing out from the fairway for eagle on the 11th hole for another win and making long putts to win the 13th (with a birdie) and 15th (with eagle) to square the match. Thompson then jumped into the lead with another impressive birdie on the 16th. The pair would halve the match when Nordqvist won the 18th hole, but it showed that a crazy comeback like the one the U.S. pulled off in 2015 (when the Americans wiped out a four-point deficit to win in Germany) wasn’t going to happen for Team Europe.

Shortly after, Paula Creamer and Cristie Kerr finished off their respective matches with Georgia Hall and Mel Reid. Creamer, an alternate who made the team only after Jessica Korda pulled out of the competition with an injury, capped a 3-1 record for the week, while Kerr went 3-0-1 and upped her all-time points total to a record 21.

A combination of guaranteed halve points from Angel Yin (who halved her match with Karine Icher), Lizette Salas (who beat Jodi Ewart-Shadoff) and Gerina Piller (who beat Florentyna Parker) put the American team past the 14½-point threshold to win the Cup.

In the end, it was the proverbial team effort for Team USA in Iowa. All 12 players on the U.S. side won at least one match during the week. And Inkster, the victorious captain as well in 2015, joined Judy Rankin as the only women to captain to back-to-back winning U.S. Solheim Cup teams.

“I’m just proud of my team,” Inkster said. “I really haven’t been nervous all week, but I was a little nervous today. It’s just an honor to captain this team, and I’m really honored to captain these girls.”

“We just got outplayed, no doubt about it,” said European captain Annika Sorenstam. “I’m just so proud with how they fought.”

By Keely Levins
Another dominant afternoon for the American side on Saturday has turned the 2017 Solheim Cup into a potential rout for the U.S. team.

With two days of competition complete at Des Moines Golf & Country Club, the home side has a daunting five-point lead over the Europeans. After a 2-2 split of Saturday morning matches (an improvement on the morning before for the Americans), Captain Juli Inkster’s crew claimed three of the four afternoon four-ball points to grab a 10½-5½ edge heading into the Sunday singles matches. The U.S. needs just 3½ out of 12 points on Sunday to retain the cup.

The first U.S. afternoon duo in was Brittany Lang and Brittany Lincicome. The Brittanys—aka the Killer Bs—made nine birdies and an eagle combined, shooting the stroke-play equivalent of eight under through seven holes. Even so, Europeans Mel Reid and Carlota Ciganda put up a good fight, making plenty of birdies as well and taking the match to the 18th, before the Brittanys ultimately won 2-up.

The second match was the only one the Team Europe won in the afternoon. Jodi Ewart Shadoff and Anna Nordqvist defeated Lizette Salas and Angel Yin, 4 and 2. Nordqvist has been on of the lone bright spots for Europe despite the fact she is one of a couple players on Annika Sorenstam’s tream not at full-health. Nordqvist has been battling mononucleosis for the past few weeks, and Sorenstam didn’t want to play her both sessions on Saturday. But with Suzann Pettersen out with a slipped disc and Solheim Cup stand-out Charley Hull sitting out all of Saturday to rest a wrist injury, plus the Europeans desperately in need of points, there wasn’t much of an option. In turn, Nordqvist played, and impressive won both of her matches Saturday.

The formidable duo of Lexi Thompson and Cristie Kerr put the next point on the board for the Americans after defeating Georgia Hall and Catriona Matthew, 4 and 2. Hall, a rookie, has been impressive in each of her matches the past two days. Matthew showed up to the Solheim Cup as an assistant captain. After Pettersen withdrew, she was put on to the rosters as an alternate. But the duo could never get the lead against Kerr and Thompson. Kerr, playing in her ninth Solheim Cup, won both her morning and her afternoon matches with Thompson on Saturday. That improved career points total in Solheim play to 20, a new American record.

Paula Creamer and Austin Ernst won the anchor match, 2 and 1, over Karine Icher and Madelene Sagstrom. Seven team birdies, an eagle, a chip in, and a near hole-in-one were celebrated with a choreographed hand shake and plenty of improvised celebrations by the American pair. Inkster named Ernst to the team as a captain’s pick and Creamer made the team as an alternate after Jessica Korda withdrew before the competition began due to injury.

A five-shot lead is a comfortable one, but not necessarily insurmountable. All Inkster and Sorenstam have to do is point to the 2015 competition, when the Americans trailed 10-6 entering Sunday singles, only to rally and win in Germany in the biggest comeback in Solheim Cup history. They’ve proven almost anything can happen. And that story will serve as motivation for both sides.

“We’re going to play like we’re behind or tied,” said Lang.

“Gas pedal down,” said Lincicome. “We’re going to try to get as many points as we possibly can. I feel like the hardest part is closing it out.”

Indeed, Inkster was happy to hear from her team—in which all 12 members have won at least one match already—that complacency wouldn’t seem to be an issue come Sunday.

“I just love where my players’ heads are at right now,” Inkster said. “They know – they haven’t said one thing in the locker room. They just were just all putting the team, the lineup together and asking everybody where they would like to fall, where they felt comfortable. And they know that it’s like game seven of any playoff, that’s the hardest game to win, is to advance.”

DES MOINES, Iowa — The pairings for the first matches of the 2017 Solheim Cup have been announced. After being shut out in 2011 and 2013, the Americans won in 2015. Here at Des Moines Golf Club, the number of USA chants that have been echoing through the grandstands during the practice rounds are a constant reminder that the Americans are defending on home soil. Both teams have rookies on their rosters, but the first tee shot, historically a loud, energetic and intense moment, will be handled by Solheim Cup veterans for both teams.

8:10 Cristie Kerr and Lexi Thompson vs Mel Reid and Charley Hull

8:22 Danielle Kang and Lizette Salas vs Carlota Ciganda and Caroline Masson

8:34 Paula Creamer and Austin Ernst vs Anna Nordqvist and Georgia Hall

8:46 Stacy Lewis and Gerina Piller vs Karine Icher and Catriona Matthew

The Kerr-Thompson pairing is very strong. Kerr is playing in her ninth Solheim Cup, and has been having an impressive and consistent season. She has a win along with five other top-five finishes in LPGA events this season. Thompson, who is playing in her third Solheim Cup, has also won this season and is currently ranked No. 2 in the world.

Related: Heavily-favoured U.S. team staying humble, fused at Solheim Cup

Though the 2017 resumes of Hull and Reid don’t match the feats of Thompson and Kerr, the two are good at the Solheim Cup. This is Hull’s third time playing, and her record is 6-2-0. This is also Reid’s third Solheim Cup appearance. She’s gone 4-3-1 in the last two.

If Hull and Reid were to win, it would certainly be considered an upset. But while good results in stroke play are important and can instill confidence, there’s no way to calculate how that’s going to translate into match play.
