Ross Kinnaird

By Christopher Powers
Earlier this month, two-time European Tour winner and Twitter All-Star Eddie Pepperell seemingly joked that Bryson DeChambeau better “watch out,” because, as Eddie put it, “this little whippersnapper will be within 75 [pounds] of you in no time.” Accompanying the tweet was a picture of Serious Mass protein powder.

Turns out, the tweet was no laughing matter. Though judging by the way Pepperell currently looks, it’s not “gainz” he has been working on over the last few months, but “subtractionz.” The noticeably slimmer Englishman conducted a mid-round interview with the European Tour on Wednesday at the British Masters, where he’s making his first professional start since March. Since then, Pepperell has been sticking to a strict, carnivore-style diet.

“There’s been practically zero carbohydrates for five months,” he said. “Lots of meat and liver and broth and bone broth and all sorts. So, I’ve felt good for it, whether I carry on to the degree I’ve been doing it I’ll see, but, I had a great opportunity to spend three months improving my health. I think I’ve used that time pretty wisely, and I think that will stand me in good stead moving forward. So, I’ve just got to sort my brain out now.”

Going carb-less is difficult enough, but doing it in the midst of a pandemic is flat-out impossible. How many times did you open up Instagram to see 15 of your friends making bread for the first time during quarantine? Roughly a billion times.

But Eddie P. stayed strong, and not only does he look good, but it appears to be helping his game. He opened with a four-under 67 on Wednesday at Close House GC in England, which has him in contention early on. Here’s a glimpse at some of the stuff he’s been chowing down on these last few months:

Got the Egg seriously warm just now! Chucking in some veg too for the first time in 3 months… had some nice mushrooms last night also which was weird and wonderful. pic.twitter.com/crcBLnohDR

I know you’re all probably thinking, “Eddie hasn’t posted anything about his amazing diet recently.” Well, here you go. Chicken feet in the bone broth and Ox liver on the side. As Alan Hansen would say, “I’ll tell you what, there aren’t many golfers eating that shit.” pic.twitter.com/GeFvXwVg45

Not bad. The question is, does he stick to this and stay slim, or is he really going all-in on the Bryson diet? If so, he can’t stay away from carbs forever.

Any golfer who has ever struck a putt too hard has the same, immediate reaction: “hit a house!” Translation? Please, just hit the hole so the ball doesn’t roll 15 feet past.

RELATED: Tommy Fleetwood’s quarantine was a piece of golf heaven

Tour pros are no different, though their chances of hitting the hole are much higher. South Africa’s Brandon Stone found himself in this exact situation on Wednesday during the opening round of the British Masters at Close House GC in England.

Stone, who was working on a one under round on the back nine, blasted a birdie putt that was tracking toward the cup. The problem was it was going far too fast, but fortunately for him the hole got in the way, as his ball hit the back of the cup and popped out. Stone’s reaction was absolutely priceless:

Come for the pacey putt, stay for @BrandonMStone's reaction ?#BetfredBritishMasters #GolfForGood pic.twitter.com/RN32crcuD9

— DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) July 22, 2020

Is there a pool noodle in that cup? Little pandemic golf joke for ya.

All kidding aside, Stone’s facial expression could not sum up that situation any better. Sure, it would have been nice if it miraculously dropped, but he knows he got away with one. If the hole didn’t get in the way, that ball rolls almost 10 feet by. Instead, he cleaned up the tap-in and sprinted to the next tee, we assume.
